Saving Idaho From The FCS: NCAA ‘14 Dynasty

Disclaimer: All real life names and images are used in a purely fictional manner and for entertainment purposes only. All portrayal by non-fictional characters in this thread are not intended in any way to reflect what they would do or say in reality.

The University of Idaho has hired C. Scott Green as their 19th president. In one of his first actions of duty, President Green has fired Athletic Director Rob Spear amid various allegations not related to the story at hand. Green, fed up with the age-old song and dance of college scandal, decides to dip into the high school ranks and hires Hansel Hammerschmidt, president of the Idaho High School Sports Association as their new AD.

Hammerschmidt was never a proponent of Spear’s toying with the idea of dropping Idaho into the FCS. He felt that Spear hadn’t been trying hard enough to allocate the money in wise ways. In Hansel’s mind, there was always an angle to make the program viable and profitable in the FBS.

Hansel’s first order of business was to revamp the school’s football program. Paul Petrino, the current head football coach, was formidable but still couldn’t generate a buzz within this current climate. So Paul was let go. And Hansel knew just the guy who could fulfill his plan: Idaho high school football coaching legend Pat Fitzkennedy.

Fitzkennedy, 43, has enjoyed success in the high school ranks for well over a decade. He grew up in Boise, raised on football by his parents, more notably his father who was his own legend as a player for Idaho in the late 60’s. But Pat grew up rooting for Notre Dame due to his defiant nature and Irish roots. He was a big dreamer who was certain he would play for the Fighting Irish one day. But he never made it that far and was recruited as an offensive lineman for the Vandals in 1994. Upon graduation in 1998, Pat became a GA for the Vandals, and he got his first coaching gig at Boise High School. There he eventually won several state championships.

But Hammerschmidt wasn’t interested in what Pat could bring in terms of wins or innovation (heck, he still ran the Wing T, stubbornly) as much as he liked the entertainment value that Fitzkennedy would bring. Pat had been kicked out of so many games that you’d think he would’ve had his coaching license revoked. But Hansel always came to his defense because he saw the spectacle for the money it generated and not for what was wrong with sports.

So when Hansel met with Pat and offered him the job as head coach of the Vandals football team, it came with one condition.

“We need to be picked up by a conference by the end of your second season or else we will have no choice but to drop to the FCS and you will have failed in your job. So you know what that means.”

Fitzkennedy understood, agreed, and wondered if he could fulfill that request. But Hansel wasn’t worried. With Pat Fitzkennedy at the helm, Idaho was about to become the talk of college football for better or for worse.

Vandals Hire Fitzkennedy
Idaho native brings a wealth of high school experience
by Rich Sansky March 2, 2019 3:45pm

Moscow, ID — The new head coach of the Vandals was announced today in a press conference open to the media. Pat Fitzkennedy becomes the new guy to try and dig this program out of the ever growing hole in which it has been falling. In the presser, he tried to make things short and sweet. But he was met with more questions than he hoped, it seemed.

Fitzkennedy: Good morning! First off, I’d like to thank President Green and Director Hammerschmidt for this opportunity. Idaho football runs deep in my family’s blood, and it will be my mission to bring it to prominence. I won’t let any of you down.

Now I recognize some of you and I’m sure most if not all of you know me, so I’m going to cut to brass tacks. I want to bring hard-nosed football to the Palouse and to the college football world! Everybody wants to run this wide open offense, but what happens when you’re outmatched? You still lose. It’s still football no matter what you run. That’s why my focus is going to be on.... wait for it.... defense!! We will put pressure on our opponents and take them out of their element. We will employ a triple option attack from the spread on the other side and keep their opportunities to score rare and precious, forcing even more pressure on them! I envision the second coming of the ‘85 Bears terrorizing opponents in the Kibbie Dome in a few years!! But we have to build. Build aggressive yet disciplined players who believe we can shock the world!!

I’ve pretty much stated all that there can be said at this point in time. The work hasn’t even been started yet so there’s not much left to say. But I’m open to questions in case I’ve missed something.

Press: What makes you think defense can win in today’s climate where even Alabama knows they need offense to win now?

Fitz: Do you think I won all of those state titles because I ran the Wing T? Of course not. It was our defense and ball control and nobody could beat us! It’s still possible to win in this game by simply beating the guy across from you. That’s what football still is.

Press: (smiling) Will we be seeing any Wing T from the Vandals? (room erupts in laughter)

Fitz: (mocking laugh) Yeah, that’s funny. It’ll be even funnier when we are hoisting the National Championship trophy while we are riding down Main Street with confetti everywhere and...... ok, yes you might see some Wing T. Next question.

Press: What makes you think you can do any better than Paul Petrino given what he had to work with in terms of resources and whatnot?

Fitz: With all due respect to coach Petrino and his obvious coaching experience, he hasn’t built anything here. And I can understand that in some regards. The pressure is on so much to win now that you barely have time to build a true foundation. I’ll give it to you straight up. We’ll be obsessed with building this year and it probably won’t translate to wins. But would you rather be playing in bowl games regularly within a matter of years or would you rather be stuck in the Big Sky Conference struggling against Montana in the same amount of time anyway?

Press: Ok, you say you’re going to do all of these things, having these grand visions and plans, but haven’t given any indication of how you’re actually going to do that. Do you even have a plan?

Fitz: Let me leave you with this - a quote from the Drill Instructor’s Creed: “These recruits are entrusted to my care. I will train them to the best of my ability. I will develop them into smartly disciplined, physically fit, basically trained Marines, thoroughly indoctrinated in love of the Corps and country.”

And with that, he exited the room full of puzzled press members.

Mason Petrino Will Stay A Vandal
Son of canned coach decides to stick around
by Rich Sansky March 11, 2019 1:30pm

Moscow, ID — Starting quarterback Mason Petrino, son of former Idaho Vandals football coach Paul Petrino, has announced that he will finish out his senior season with the team.

“One thing my father always taught me was to finish what I started”, said Mason, amid speculation that he would bolt due to his father not being the coach as well as the playing style changing drastically.

“It’s not my ideal offense”, Mason added, “but my teammates and I are ready to see if we can shock the world like Coach Fitz says.”

Re: Saving Idaho From The FCS: NCAA ‘14 Dynasty

The Narrative

Pat gathered his newly assembled recruiting and scouting department into the War Room of Idaho’s football complex. The new coach laid out his plan for everyone.

“Ok, you’ll notice that we have a healthy amount of scouts on this staff now”, said Pat. That’s because the most important part of this process will be recruiting. I forfeited some of my salary to make sure we staffed the finest scouts in the Northwest region.

“We are going to build this team from the trenches out. So even though our top needs to refill are DT, FB, and OLB, I want two scouts scouring the area for offensive linemen. Strong run blockers. I want us to move down the field like a tank until we reach the end zone EVERY TIME. That’s first priority.

“Next priority is obviously D tackle. I want two scouts looking for strong, run stuffing behemoths that can collapse the pocket from the middle!

”Next, I need a guy looking for our next fullback and outside linebacker. Our fullback needs to be able to run AND block well because he will have multiple roles in the triple option system. And we need an outside linebacker who is smart, fast, and can shed blocks. He will be blitzing a LOT.

“Two of you will be finding pass rushing defensive ends. We are switching to a 4-3 defense and this will be the the key to our system. We need edge rushers with speed and acceleration to get sacks and force bad throws. And the linebackers behind them will clean up for the run.

“Whoever else is left will scout any other interested prospects and see if they’ve got what it takes to be a member of the new Vandals!”
