Re: Before I Buy, What are some of YOUR issues with the game?
In my opinion (I make this clear because I think a lot of people here disagree with me):
Pros
- Pitching/Batting can be fun and realistic.
- The graphics are good enough.
- Some of the "little things" are really well done (probably too well done).
- The atmosphere works really well sometimes.
- Players do (at the plate) occasionally give you feeling that they are who they are (i.e. bases loaded and "Oh shoot, here comes Chipper".) I don't know if this is entirely appearance based or what, but it does feel like they occasionally perform like their real-life counterparts at the plate and on the mound.
Cons
- The franchise is in embryonic form.
- There are many problems with stats (compiling, accurately tracking, viewing).
- The franchise interface is terrible.
- Attributes are minimal and wrongheaded.
- Players perform similarly in the field.
- Progression is predictable and poorly done.
- There is rubber-band logic present (thus assuring the closure of this thread).
- Rather than canned animations, sometimes the game feels canned.
- Sliders have little (if any) effect.
- Yes, commentary is horrible
- Franchise-generated players are bland and incorrectly announced.
- The rendering of the ball traveling from P to C is probably the worst in any baseball game ever (i.e. Curves travel in a slightly nonlinear motion, hit a plate of glass and fall straight down at the plate).
- Baseball strategy is poorly done.
There is more good and bad.
NBA 2k9 is a better game, but MLB 09 is probably worth checking out. Especially, if you are not bothered too much by the above.
Stand by for alternate viewpoints. This is just one opinion of a longtime baseball nerd and once (and now again) video game geek. I did not play a single next-gen game until MLB The Show. Maybe my expectations were too high.
If you have the stomach for a straight-up text simulation of baseball, there is also a much better option: Out of the Park Baseball X, which was released today.
