Two things which have worked for me

On defense I stopped controlling a defender, I simply control a forward and leave him at midfield. I press the button to have a second player attack the opponent. Far more successful than controlling a defender for me.

On offense I slowly work the ball upfield and get the ball eventually to a forward at the corner of the penalty box. From there I use a skill move to get the ball to the baseline, and then use L2 button to hold the ball which freezes the defender. Once the defender freezes, I sprint diagonally into the penalty box, resulting in a shot on goal.

i have got a hold of TD already, u just need to play enough games to know when to tackle when to contain, i keep about 50% clean sheets on legendary, well i do get cheesed along the way

the only thing not realistic is that, opponent ai does perfect standing tackles.

So basically you do a gimp version of the goalie exploit because you aren't smart enough to figure that one out yet.
