A New Pirate Generation | Pittsburgh Pirates (MLB The Show)

A New Pirate Generation:

A Pittsburgh Pirates Dynasty

Rosters: Ridin
Sliders: TNK

House Rules:

Trades:
  • I will only offer trades between the end of the Postseason and the beginning of the regular season, and during the last two weeks of July. All other trades will need to be offered by the other team; I can modify those trades but may not remove the "core" offered by either side.
  • Between the beginning of Spring Training season 1 and the trade deadline, all trades must be approved by the Baseball Trade Values Trade Simulator.

Free Agency:
  • No signing of established veteran free agents at the beginning of season 1; no more than five prospect free agents during season 1.
  • I cannot sign free agents that would feel "unreal" — that is, no star free agents — unless the team has a winning season the year prior.

Re: A New Pirate Generation | Pittsburgh Pirates (MLB The Show)

Young Bucs look to make a difference

BRADENTON, Fla.— The Pirates have played "A New Pirate Generation" following home wins for two decades, since the opening of PNC Park.

It's embarrassing. At least four "generations" of Pirate players have been the "new generation."

Now, though, there is a new generation of Pirate players. Well, at least in part.

On Opening Day, three Pirates will be making their MLB debut. Infielder Diego Castillo and outfielders Canaan Smith Njigba and Travis Swaggerty impressed Bucco manager Derek Shelton enough to not only make the Pirate roster but to make the lineup on the first day of the season.

While not making their debuts, young Buc shortstop Oneil Cruz and third baseman Ke'Bryan Hayes will also feature prominently on the Opening Day roster.

A handful of young Pirate players didn't make the roster but are on general manager Ben Cherington's radar. Pitchers Roansy Contreras, Quinn Priester and Miguel Yajure will likely make the roster this year if they perform well in AAA. Same with outfielder Jack Suwinski.

Of course, with these younger players making the roster, the Pirates had to make some roster moves to leave room on the team. Cherington dealt pitchers Jerad Eickhoff and Jose Quintana to Tampa Bay for 22-year-old righty Cole Wilcox and 22-year-old outfielder Dru Baker. Outfielder Jake Marisnick and utility man Josh VanMeter went to the Chicago White Sox in exchange for 22-year-old righty Sean Burke and 21-year-old righty Matthew Thompson.

The Bucs took a flier on first baseman Dan Vogelbach. It didn't work out in Spring Training, however, and the Pirates dealt him to Miami for 19-year-old shortstop Yiddi Cappe.

Powerful Pirates pummel opponents in Opening Weekend

Over a three-game set, the Pirates took two wins from the Cardinals, both in exciting fashion.

On Thursday, the Bucs came behind from a 0-1 deficit, hitting two home runs in the bottom of the ninth to walk off the Cards, 2-1. Canaan Smith Njigba's first major-league hit — and his first major-league home run — was instrumental, tying the game up in the bottom of the inning.

Sadly, the Pirates' luck didn't continue that Saturday. The Bucs, carrying a slim, 5-4 lead into the eighth, let their slim margin slip away on the back of reliever Chris Stratton. In the ninth, the Cardinals added insult to injury, scoring three insurance runs. While the Pirates regained one run in the bottom of the ninth, there was no walk-off magic waiting for Pittsburgh fans, as the Cards sank the Pirates 9-6.

With the series split, the Pirates and Cards battled through nine innings on Sunday. The Pirates took an early 2-0 lead, but the Cardinals answered and, in the fourth, took a 3-2 lead over the Bucs. Pittsburgh, not to be outdone, took a lead of their own in the sixth inning, before surrendering the lead to the Cardinals on a Harrison Bader solo shot in the seventh. Then, in the eighth, Michael Chavis hit a two-run single, the last runs of the game for either team.

Re: A New Pirate Generation | Pittsburgh Pirates (MLB The Show)

Pirates take two straight series from division rivals

From a 1-0 pitcher's duel to a 6-3 no-doubter, the Pirates' second series of the year, in Cincinnati against the Reds, featured all types of baseball.

In game one, the Bucs got out to an early three-run lead, but Bryse Wilson, coming in during the top of the fourth as a follower, immediately surrendered the lead to the Reds on a single and a three-run blast. The Pirates didn't retake the lead the rest of the game, and couldn't even get their offense moving, striking 0 extra base hits.

Game two was much, much different. Over the first three innings, the Pirates and Reds twice swapped leads, going into the fourth inning tied at 4-4. For the next three innings, neither side could get their side of the seesaw higher. In the seventh, though, Ke'Bryan Hayes came through clutch, driving in Travis Swaggerty on a single down the left field line to give the Bucs a 5-4 lead, which Pittsburgh held on to until the end.

Box score:

Spoiler

The rubber match of the three-game series on Sunday was a true pitcher's duel. Bryan Reynolds hit his third home run of the season, a 384-foot wall-scraper to right, in the first inning. That was it. The Bucs and Reds combined for eight additional hits, but neither side could string together enough knocks to score another run.

Re: A New Pirate Generation | Pittsburgh Pirates (MLB The Show)

Bucs sign 2, claim 2

ST. LOUIS — As the Pirates' charter plane was about to depart from Cincinnati, general manager Ben Cherington hung up his cell phone and sighed, having completed four transactions shortly before takeoff.

The Pirates claimed from waivers Wandy Peralta, a 30-year-old southpaw reliever, from the New York Yankees, and enigmatic 29-year-old first baseman/catcher Yermin Mercedes from the Chicago White Sox. Both Peralta and Mercedes are expected to join the Pirates in St. Louis, although Mercedes will likely not be in the starting lineup.

Peralta, who was sent from San Francisco to New York as part of the Michael Tauchman trade last July, threw two sub-4.00 ERA seasons in San Francisco and New York in the pandemic-afflicted seasons, including a 8.23 K/9 in San Francisco in 2020. He features a changeup, a slider and two fastballs in his repertoire. Mercedes is a right-handed batter who started the 2021 season with eight hits in eight at-bats before being demoted by the White Sox in July. Although he announced his retirement on July 21, he returned the very next day. He will likely take some platoon starts at first base and fill in at catcher on occasion.

The Bucs also signed two players, again a reliever and a first baseman. Luis Escobar, a 23-year-old reliever whom the Pirates released in 2020, will return to Pittsburgh on a one-year, league minimum contract. First baseman Bobby Bradley, whom the Cleveland Baseball Team released following a disappointing Spring Training, will join the Indianapolis Indians on a minor-league contract.

To make room on the MLB roster, the Pirates outrighted pitcher Aaron Fletcher to AAA and optioned outfielder Greg Allen to the Indians. Shortstop Cole Tucker was designated for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster.

Re: A New Pirate Generation | Pittsburgh Pirates (MLB The Show)

Cubs trade Suzuki for Detroit's Torkelson

In a strange trade, the Chicago Cubs dealt outfielder Seiya Suzuki to the Detroit Tigers for the fourth best prospect in MLB, infielder Spencer Torkelson.

Suzuki, 27, signed a five-year, $85 million contract with the Cubs in March, but evidently did not impress Chicago's front office enough to remain with the club longer than a month. Torkelson, 22, was the Tigers' top prospect and was ranked #4 by MLB Pipeline ahead of the season.

Re: A New Pirate Generation | Pittsburgh Pirates (MLB The Show)

Sleepless in St. Louis

Bryan Reynolds absolutely torched the St. Louis Cardinals over a four-game set as the Pirates took three from their division rivals, extending their series-winning streak to three.

Reynolds went 10-for-18 (.556) during the series, hitting two doubles, one triple and a homer, as the Bucs scored 21 runs to the Cardinals' 12.

In the first game, Reynolds went 2-for-4 with a double, but was ultimately not responsible for driving in either of the Pirates' two runs. Yoshi Tsutsugo got his first RBI of the year on an infield single that drove Reynolds in; Tsutsugo was later driven in on a Michael Chavis single. Those two runs were all she wrote, as the Bucs defeated their St. Louis rivals, 2-0.

Box score:

Spoiler

The Pirates' center fielder was kept relatively quiet in the second game of the series, going 1-for-4 and scoring on an Oneil Cruz single in the first inning. That one run was all the Pirates could muster until the ninth, while the Cards put a three spot on the scoreboard in the fifth and seventh innings.

Box score:

Spoiler

Bryan came back with a vengeance in the third game of the set, however, batting 3-for-5 and going just a homer shy of the cycle. Reynolds' sole RBI was not responsible for the Bucs' win, with that run belonging to Travis Swaggerty, who grounded into a fielder's choice which allowed Diego Castillo to score in the fifth. While the Cards tried mounting a comeback, with a two-run double in the eighth to bring the score from 5-2 to 5-4, David Bednar shut it down for his fifth save of the year.

Box score:
Spoiler

Reynolds — and the rest of the Bucs' offense — pushed Jordan Hicks from the game in the fifth inning after scoring three earned runs in the first four innings. The rest of the Cardinals' pitching staff didn't fare any better, allowing nine more runs as the Bucs routed the Cardinals, 12-2.
