Montreal Screwjob

I was just browsing around youtube and saw a video about this. This was the stupidest thing to ever happen in the WWE. Everybody loved Brett Hart. I hate how Mcmahon buys out all the competition. No competition is ruining everything in the world.

Re: Montreal Screwjob

So it would have been better for Vince to have let Bret Hart leave for WCW as the WWF World Champion?

Bret was more then willing to do the job except he wanted to do it in the US and not in Canada. I think he had told Vince he would drop the strap the next night on Raw.

Would you stick around after getting screwed in front of millions of people?

I believe that he wanted to come out and "forfit" the belt and just leave which would've looked almost as bad. I think the issue on top of not wanting to drop the belt in Canada was he didn't want to drop it to hbk. I'm sure he would've done it for Taker, Austin, or just about anyone else.

Re: Montreal Screwjob

I think it took a couple weeks before Bret showed up on WCW TV which was just in time for Starrcade 97.

The next night Raw was in Ottawa I believe, where if my memory serves correct Bret just wanted to forfeit the belt. He didn't want to lose in Canada. In the Hitman Hart documentary it was said that Bret had creative control in the last 30 days of his contract. That would probably explain why he didn't want to do the job in Canada.

As big of a Bret Hart fan that I am, I believe he should have just dropped the belt at Survivor Series. I know he had a lot of momentum at the time with the fans in Canada but nobody should be above the show.

Hitman Hart Wrestling with Shadows does a great job of chronicling the whole incident (highly recommended). Bret even wears a wire during his discussions with Vince on the night of the Survivor Series .
