Aaron Rodgers: Escaping Favre's shadow.
Posted on January 24, 2011 at 09:32 PM.
Favre. The face of the Packers a couple years ago is now retiring (for real?). His replacement, Aaron Rodgers is one win away from a superbowl win. Rodgers has more road playoff wins this year (3) then Favre had his whole career. Noone saw this coming. Especially the 49ers, who took Alex Smith with the 1st pick over Rodgers, who almost fell into the second round. With a superbowl win, Rodgers will jump over Favre's legacy in Greenbay. Easily the best Qb in the NFC, Rodgers has a chance to prove why the Packers let Favre go in favor of him in 2 weeks.

You know what, Aaron Rodgers is a great QB. However, even from when Favre was in his prime, the game has changed. Offenses have evolved, and I think the team around Aaron Rodgers makes it a lot easier for him to succeed. Yes, he has no running game on a consistent basis. However, the way they run their offense and built their offense, passing should be easy for Rodgers. Even though Aaron is great, he has a lot more help than Brett. Also, as far as legacy goes, when Aaron and Brett are retired (long from now), Favre's going to be remembered as a much bigger legend than Rodgers.

ktownage nice post, i think that you and legend ryder both make valid points but the reason that legendryder feels that farve will be a bigger legend is because of the fact that he was labeled a "drunk" from missisippi who was supposed to be a nobody and flipped that to become arguably statistaclly speaking the greatest qb ever.

"With a superbowl win, Rodgers will jump over Favre's legacy in Greenbay."

I don't know if that's the case. I'm a Packer fan who was in the Ted Thompson camp with the Favre/Rodgers decision, but I feel that Rodgers will likely never surpass certain elements of Favre's legacy. Favre helped to usher in a new era of success from a two decade long drought of failure. Rodgers is in a sense inheriting that extended wave of success and hoping to keep it going. Favre never exceeded Bart Starr's legacy of winning, and Rodgers will probably not even approach Favre's legacy of toughness or statistical accomplishments.

However what a win on February 6th will mean is that he will join the ranks of Favre and Starr.

When the whole thing with Favre wanting to return and Green Bay not wanting him thing was happening, I was confused, and very angry. Why would you reject a HOF QB just so you can let this guy who's yet to start a game play. However, a few years have passed by, and as much as it hurts to say it, Thompson probably made the right decision. I'll forever hate the guy, simply because I'm too much of a Favre fan. Also, I do think the team could have given Brett one more year. The way they handled the situation was also one thing that could have been different. Ex. Telling Brett he was going to re join Gruden in TB, but then trading him to the Jets. However, what's done is done. I was wrong at the time to think that Aaron Rodgers was going to be nothing. He's good, real good. But like I said, he'll never be Brett Favre.
