Madden NFL 15 News Post

I have spent quite a bit of time over the last couple of days playing the retail release of Madden NFL 15, which is set to release in a limited format to EA Access customers later today. To put it simply, this is probably the best Madden ever from a technical perspective and may be some of the most fun I’ve had with the franchise in years.

Here are my pros and cons after about ten full games:

Pros

Defense is fun again — There are multiple mini games you can now effectively partake in on each play on defense. Beating the OL is a timing mini-game of sorts which requires you to jump the snap and then make an effectively timed and directionally smart move to get to the QB. You can tell when you are facing an elite OT, because he will feel like a brick wall on many/most plays.
• Quarterbacks feel different — I don’t have enough info to safely say the pass accuracy is fixed, but playing Peyton Manning feels like you are playing a more elite level QB versus, say a Matt Cassel. Defensively, I found that it was even more of a rush to get to the QB when he was better, because you knew he was going to make decisions faster.
• Good news, the tackle cone doesn’t suck — From my initial play-sessions with Madden, it appears the tackle cone is not a major in your face type of addition many feared. The new tackling system adds a risk/reward setup to what used to be a very boring aspect of the game.
• Defenders are smarter — Zone defenders are much smarter this year, with players reacting to the ball much faster resulting in much narrower throwing lanes. This is going to make a lot of people used to soft zones very angry initially.
• The New Connected Franchise Options Are Great — Setting up a weekly gameplan or repairing your team’s busted up confidence is such a great series of decisions to have to make each week. Alex Smith had a horrible game against the Broncos and his confidence sank, so I had to spend valuable preparation points to raise his confidence back up. These are the things you don’t see in the NFL, but things coaches have to do to ensure players are at the top of their game.
• Community Playcalling is surprisingly good — The playcalling feature which I thought was nothing more than a gimmick actually seems to be pretty good at both conveying information that you would find relevant in both how users and how you use it. It makes the whole experience feel more connected.
• Thank goodness for the new cameras — Seriously, the new cameras and how they've been implemented (fast switching) is something which should be universal in sports games. It's that good -- it doesn't hurt the camera angles themselves are quite good, including the new over the shoulder defensive angle you can switch to on defense. Major kudos EA.
• The graphics, audio, and in-game broadcast presentation have arrived — It has long been a dream to have Madden look and feel like the rest of the major sports games in our genre, it always lagged behind. This year, at least to me, I feel like the presentation and graphics are both up there with anything you can find on store shelves today. It’s not perfect, but it’s definitely gotten to a point where it’s clearly quite good.

Cons

• The playcalling menus really need to quit defaulting to the community playcall screen — I swear the amount of manpower and hours I’m going to spend backing up one menu layer to get to my preferred playcalling screen is going to make me sad. Bonus points for the playcalling menus not having that weird lag where I literally miss my option a lot.
• QBs may still be too accurate out of the box — I need to run more tests, but I’m pretty sure QBs may be more accurate out of the box than realism would suggest is possible. The good news is, slider combinations are going to fix this largely.
• The game’s first boot takes too long to get to action you care about — We can do without this nonsense.
• The new kick meter is hit or miss — At first, I actually missed a couple of field goals, but now I seem to be automatic again. I need to test this out more.

Initial Thoughts

Thus far, Madden NFL 15 is really shaping up great. I still have a lot to check out within the game before I end up posting my final review. However, my initial thoughts are pretty strongly in favor of this year’s Madden. This is still Madden football, just a better and more true to life version of it. It’s too early whether to say Madden belongs amongst the discussion with the traditional great games in our genre, but I would be lying if I said it wasn’t tempting to suggest its possible at this point.

Look for my full review in a day or two here on OS. Madden NFL 15 releases later today (noon) for EA Access users in a limited six-hour demo, and will be out next Tuesday in stores.

It would be quite something if all the people who never have anything positive to say about Madden held these other sports games to the same critical standard they hold Madden to. I mean seriously, it's a video game. Some of the criticisms I see on the net are just laughable. Nitpicking over the most trivial stuff. I'll bet there are a ton of people who often go right to instant replay so they can meticulously scan the field looking for things to nitpick about on their favorite message board. But when it coms to other sports games they'll overlook a ton of of the same type of imperfection.

The constant delay waiting to get synched up is a problem, the menu structure changed again. First look and feel is this makes no sense. Why not allocate efforts in fixing the broken parts. Online was a mess with madden 25, any change there, or are we left with another broken element of the game. Bottom line an unbiased review is helpful, anything is worthless. I don't post much but i do expect a better effort,. You lost me after thinking this is one of the best games ever , after an hour of playing.
What qualifies as a fair assessment to you? Only pointing out the things you don't agree with? His review was very fair he didn't say it was the best game he ever played, he pointed out both pros and cons. It also helps if you read the first paragraph of his review where he says he is playing a retail release. He is not reviewing the EA Access version.

The Super Bowl is the most watched event in the US every year. Treat it as such. I appreciate the effort, but I don't understand why Madden is so far behind sports games, and don't even mention how far they are, techologically speaking, behind other genres.
The Show? The Show gets way too much cred for presentation. The team celebration cutscenes for The Show have been a complete joke for years. 162 game season plus playoffs and you're rewarded with the most underwhelming, short championship cutscene of any sports game on the market. Madden has had it beat since at least Madden 10, and it's not even close. The commentary on The Show is every bit as repetitive as it is on Madden, especially on RTTS. The pre-game/post-game presentation is pretty much exactly the same in the regular season as it is in the postseason and all it really amounts to are various camera shots of the guys tossing the ball back and forth, stretching, and showing each team's lineup with the same stale commentary during these segments. And it's been the same for years. Madden does it the way it's done on prime time telecasts. The Show has gotten every bit as stale as Madden gets flak for but it doesn't get held to the same standard Madden does.

I've played 2 games so far, and love it. Feels like watching a CBS game IMO.

I had 1 penalty occur without touching sliders and that was a Unnecessary Roughness that actually was on the CPU, I was surprised.

From just the little time I've had with the game, since I'm rushing through things due to that 6 hour limit, I'd rate the game 8.5/10 and say it's the best Madden IMO since 2005 (which was my favorite)

But please understand that the game can be better analyzed with a non-biased opinion (someone who calls it like it IS). Coming from that perspective, this impression doesn't hold much weight. And regardless if you like or cant stand Madden, we all hope for the best and want solid impressions we can gauge the game with (especially without a demo). Im going to redbox it. I could have found out everything i needed from the demo, but we all know that isn't possible. I think that inadvertently amplifies the "need" for unbiased impressions. Thanks for sharing anyways thou.
So who decides what opinion is an unbiased one? You? So if you agree then that makes it unbiased? I think you're missing what an opinion is? Also there is no such thing as an unbiased opinion.

If anyone here is truly a fan of madden and its presentation, then go and check out the ps1 versions. Their presentation with a real life JB was off the chains, and it actually showed replays and highlights from other games.

Never seen it get better than that though.

They use real player clips in a PiP window when talking about a key player and it looks sweet. Also, the 2K aspect is there. I was playing against Philly and they had Foles on the screen in digital form palming a football as if he were in a studio while discussing his stats. This happened between quarters.

This is the best presented Madden I have ever seen. It feels like an NFL broadcast.

My impressions through about 3 hours of Madden 15 on XBOX One:

-Post Play animations are absolutely awesome, look great, seamless, and really change the game for me. It's amazing how that small change makes the game so much more realistic and closer to what you see on Sundays

-Coaches (one's who actually allow their likenesses) look very much alike their real-life counterparts. Chuck Pagano looks scary real and Tom Coughlin is pretty close too.

-Graphics overall are way better than last year's Madden 25 on XBoxOne. The cuts in the biceps, the sweat on the arms, and the wrinkles in the jerseys are very impressive

-Fields look good, very close to real life

-Halftime and Post game shows are OK. At least we are headed in the right direction, close to what 2k5 offered

-Gameplay is smooth, the early jump on defense when timed correctly is very satisfying, running with the ballcarrier seems more realistic than last year

Overall I think EA has done a pretty good job through my early impressions.Curious if you guys agree with my impressions above?

No matter what EA does, or "tries" to prevent gamers from exploiting something in the game it's bound to happen, too many cats spend countless hours looking for an advantage. Doesn't surprise me that they found one already there were nanos in M25 there will be nanos I'm M26

Yes please don't let that fool do anymore damage, but the footage speaks for itself, he doesn't have to even talk.

LOL! That is one of the funniest things I've seen here. People used to accuse us of being a NFL2k5 fansite but now we are Madden biased?

After 2 hours of play I have to say I like what I see. So far coverage on all pro is hard but fair. The running game is harder but when you read it right there have been some good holes to run in. Big plays do occur but they so far seem fair. I saw a face mask that was actual verified in game play. Not perfect as the hand really lever hit the face mask but the players head turned af it it was yanked.

Bears vs lions played down to the wire both times as it should they are closely matched. That I like much.
Let's see if the feeling holds up

Gotta say, very happy with first 2 games played. While I know some will still complain about particular animations, I have to say they are much smoother than they've ever been - meaning the transition of animations. I've already seen in 2 games better WR animations. The game def 'feels' different, too. The movement feels less herky jerky than I thought I saw on vids (maybe, the compression arg was legit? Idk, but game plays smoother than I noticed on videos, so def happy about that). Replays ARE better, also. Once again, the vids had me thinking, 'oh. They're not better. Wtf?' But, now playing the game, they make sense and transition well. Maybe, a little too zoomed in and short in duration, but adequate and nothing to truly bitc$ about. Zoom camera is nice and really digging the d cam. Brees and cam newton both threw for 70%, AND took too many sacks in my 2 games, but this might be slidered out. Overall, gameplay is fun, realistic enough, tough enough d. Gauntlet mode is def a nice addition. I'm really enjoying it. I hate to say it, because I've been disappointed by madden for so long, I almost WANT to complain more about it. Lol. But, I can't. It's really a solid game right now. Can't wait to start a franchise and maybe even play online some. For those that are complaining, I really think we've all just been so disappointed and used to being disappointed, that it's hard to see the good. I say, play the game more. This is the best I've seen it, that's for sure. Another thing I haven't seen anyone posting. The field size vs player size feels much more correct now. And, I'm happy about that, too. Throwing deep really feels like throwing deep and u feel that separation between WR, CB, and SS/FS. Instead of everyone being in the same general area. Anyways, I'm happy and can't believe I'm saying this, but, 'Good job, ea madden team.' Lol.

Right. Cause MLB The Show and NBA2K both have legacy issues. 2k's commentary is very repetitive but you never hear a complaint about that. The Show is just straight out boring. Just like real baseball so I guess they did get "Sim" right.
