FOFC Baseball Auction dynasty
BACKSTORY: From all around the world and throughout time the most talented baseball players and managers in the world are summoned to play in a special league made up entirely of the best of the best. The teams were selected by FOFC members at auction and will be placed on the field head-to-head to settle the argument of who has the best team.
OK, so it's not going to really do that, but at least one team is going to get bragging rights. NUTS & BOLTS: I will be running this league in Diamond Mind Baseball. Most of the players will be based on the ratings given in the All-Time Greatest Players disk, which are based on consecutive peak seasons. The other players are based on my estimates of how good they are, based on the data I could find. The parameters for the league will be as follows: 1. The number of teams in the league is still in flux, since a few teams may be dropped for not completing their roster. Don't worry; unlike SOME baseball games, Diamond Mind can do a reasonable schedule for any number of teams for 162 games or so. I'll announce the teams and the schedule when it gets finalized. 2. There is no DH in this league. 3. All teams play at neutral parks. 4. Games will be simmed using the modern era, which is an average of National League teams from 1955 to 2002. 5. Injuries are turned on. =============================================== LINEUPS Now I need your help. Instead of representing the manager in the game, I will allow you, the team owner, to direct the managerial strategy of your team. This is the lineup for my team, and this is the form I would like you to use (clip and save): =============================================== Lineup vs. RHP 1. Ashburn, cf 2. G. Davis, ss 3. If you choose not to set a lineup, I'll let the computer auto-select one for you. It does a decent job, but I'm sure it's not as smart as you . I'm not going to set a deadline yet, since the auction is still going on, but sooner is better. You can always make changes at any time until the deadline, which I will let you know about when I figure it out. Thanks for your interest and cooperation. Hi guys. I just wanted to let you know I made a few minor changes to my lineup by editing the message above.
Also, no deadlines yet, since (1) I'm not quite sure which teams are in or out yet, and (2) a few teams have some holes to fill. But start thinking about those lineups, OK? Thanks. |

Exhibition series vs. Texas
While we're waiting for the auction to finish up, I sent the team out to face some quality opposition. They came up with the Texas All-Time Single Season Greats team. Let me try to explain who these guys are. They're the best single player-seasons in Texas (and New Washington Senator) history based on Keith Hemmelman's roster set. Most of the usual suspects are there - Pudge, A. Rod, Palmeiro, etc., along with some other familiar names and some that aren't so familiar. A very quick scouting evaluation: formidable hitting, but mediocre pitching. They're a good match for us, and we expect some high scoring ballgames.
I ran this series with a 24 man roster (no Montgomery); they had close to 40 players, all active. Let's see who's the boss... |

I should have my team finalized when the next round is put up. I only needed one player.
BTW, why are youbeating up on the Little Sisters of the Poor? AT least choose the all-time greats of a real team like Cleveland or Detroit . |

Quote:
For the same reasons that the Harlem Globetrotters like to play the Generals or the Nationals - morale boost, get into shape, and scare the real opposition (you guys). Cleveland and Detroit are tough, but the Yanks and A's are the real terrors of the AL. Anyway, Texas gets another chance to show how tough they are. Let's see how they did... Top of 1st - Aaron Sele pitching for the Rangers. George Davis draws a one out walk. Joe Morgan bounces out to second, moving Davis to 2nd base. Mike Schmidt singled home the run. HB 1, TEX 0. Top of 3rd - Lefty Grove and Ashburn hit singles. George Davis drives them both home with a double to left. Joe Morgan triples to right center, driving home Davis. Sele is replaced by Steve Foucault. Schmidt bounces to short, who makes the play to first while Morgan scores. HB 5, TEX 0. Bottom of 5th - Grove on the mound. He grooves a fastball and Frank Howard kills is, his one mistake of the day. HB 5, TEX 1. Top of 6th - This one is going to take awhile... Bobby Witt on the mound. With one out, Richie Ashburn gets an infield hit, but suffers a minor injury and has to leave the game. Bobby Bonds is selected to pinch run. G. Davis' single moves Bonds to third. Morgan draws a walk. Schmidt clears the bases with a double. Charlie Keller bounces out to second, with Schmidt moving to third. Frank Robinson gets a free pass. No more Witt; Paul comes in to try to put out the fire. Keith Hernandez hits a ball right at A. Rod, but he bobbles it and everyone is safe, with Schmidt scoring. Ted Simmons blasts a double, driving in Robinson and Hernandez. Lefty Grove draws a walk. Bonds' single loads the bases. Davis draws a walk and Simmons scores. HB 12, TEX 1. Top of 7th - Schmidt hits a single. Eric Davis slashes a triple, driving in Schmidt. Robinson bounces out to second; the throw goes to first and E. Davis scores easily. HB 14, TEX 1. Top of 8th - Edwin Correa takes the ball. With one out, Bobby Bonds is safe on Correa's fielding error. G. Davis hits into a forceout. With Morgan up, Correa uncorks a wild pitch. Morgan eventually gets a walk to fill the empty base. Correa throws another wild pitch with Schmidt up. And Schmidt also gets a free pass. E. Davis hits another bouncer to A. Rod that he boots with Bonds scoring. HB 15, TEX 1. Code:

BTW, HB, you can find a conversion formula for Japanese baseball on the web. The modern one is part of the Baseball Archives. You can get it here:
http://www.baseballprospectus.com/ne...davenport.html To compare during Oh, Harimoto, Nomura, and Nagashima's time you can use this formula: Runs:* 0.884**** Hits:* 0.904***** 2B:* 0.829******* 3B* 2.149******** HR:* 0.524****** RBI* 0.778 SO:* 1.017 ***** BB:* 1.148 http://baseballguru.com/jalbright/an...lbright13.html Here are stat conversions for a typical sesaon from there primes (this article is from a few years ago; so it's before Ichiro came to the majors-- check out the accuracy): Code:

Meanwhile, back to the action at The Ballpark... Bottom of 1st - Gaylord Perry working for the good guys. Julio Franco singles and takes second on a wild pitch. Rusty Greer singles him over to third. Rod moves to third, but the ball was cut off and Pudge was thrown out trying to head to second. Mickey Rivers hit a hot smash to Schmidt and he couldn't come up with the handle. A. Rod scored on the error. TEX 4, HB 0. Bottom of 3rd - Pudge hits a single and scores on Rivers' triple. TEX 5, HB 0. Top of 4th - Ortega on the mound. Mike Schmidt hits a triple. Charlie Keller grounds out to first and Schmidt scores. TEX 5, HB 1. Bottom of 4th - With one out Franco singles and moves to second on a balk. Greer slaps a homer that carried into the stands. TEX 7, HB 1. Top of 6th - Grab some popcorn... Schmidt and Keller hit singles. With one out Keith Hernandez lofts one into the stands into left, driving in three. Ted Simmons walks. With two outs Bob Lemon singles him to third. G. Davis was safe on catchers' interference, loading the bases. Joe Morgan hits a legitimate homer to right, a grand slam! HB 8, TEX 7. Bottom of 6th - Lemon on the mound. Franco singles and steals second. Greer walks. Palmeiro singles, driving in Franco. HB 8, TEX 8. Top of 8th - Knowles pitching. With one out Morgan singles and steals second. Schmidt walks and Keller singles to load the bases. Pinch hitter Wes Ferrell hit a clean single to right. Morgan scored, but Schmidt was gunned down at the plate. HB 9, TEX 8. Top of 9th - Jim Kern workin' it. Simmons hits a leadoff homer. HB 10, TEX 8. Bottom of 9th - John Hiller trying to lock down the game. Sierra gets a leadoff single. A. Rod moves him to second with a single of his own. No more Hiller; Tekulve comes in. Frank Howard grounds into a double play with A. Rod taking third. Rivers singles, driving in a run. Bell gets another single. Retzer gets a single, driving in Rivers. HB 10, TEX 10. Bottom of 10th - Jimmy Key is the last available pitcher, so he's gotta go. With one out Sierra singles, A. Rod draws a walk, and Chuck Hinton puts us out of our misery with a single. TEX 11, HB 10 (10). Code:

Top of 2nd - Bert Blyleven tries to redeem himself for a less-than-stellar performance in game 3. Ivan Rodriguez singles with one out. Mickey Rivers follows it up with a two-bit home run that barely clears the wall. Unfortunately it counts the same as any other... HB 2, TEX 2. With one out, Ashburn draws a walk. G. Davis clears the bases with a triple. Knowles comes in to face Morgan. Little Joe gets the better of it, getting a single and driving home Davis. More nuts & bolts
Now that my team has warmed up against Texas, and Bishop has announced the latest auction results, I can figure out a schedule and give you the rest of the rules. It looks like there are going to be 16 teams, and I've divided them into four divisions:
East Division: BishopMVP, Ramzavail, vtbub, Isiddiqui Midwest Division: Bearcat729, Coffee Warlord, Honolulu Blue, TheLionKing West Division: Chief Rum, Oykib, Sooner333, Vince International Division: Booj, Maple Leafs, ntndeacon, Suicane75 SCHEDULE: Teams will play 14 games against each team within their division, and 10 games against the other teams, for a total of 162 games. PLAYOFFS: Eight teams will make the playoffs - the four division winners and the four teams with the best records that didn't win their division. The division winners will get the top four seeds based on their records (I'll cover the tie breakers later). The first round will go like this: #8 team vs. #1 team #7 team vs. #2 team #6 team vs. #3 team #5 team vs. #4 team All series in the first round will be best-of-five, with the higher seed playing Games 3, 4, and 5 at home (as necessary). The second round will go like this: #4 team vs. #1 team #3 team vs. #2 team Both series in this round will be best-of-seven, with the higher seed playing Games 1, 2, 6, and 7 at home (as necessary). The championship round pits the #2 team against the #1 team. It will be best-of-seven, with the higher seed playing Games 1, 2, 6, and 7 at home (as necessary). TIE BREAKERS: Regular season - A tie for a division title will be broken by a one game playoff. The home team will be determined by a coin flip. Seedings - The following tie breakers will be used in this order until the tie is broken: 1. Head-to-head record (regular season) 2. Best run differential (regular season) 3. Fewest runs allowed (regular season) 4. Most runs scored (regular season) 5. Fewest errors (regular season) 6. Coin flip DEADLINE: I need the lineups in by Friday, February 13, 2004, at 11:59 PM Eastern Time. See the first post above for the desired structure. You can send them to me by e-mail ([email protected]), PM, or post here. You can make as many changes as you like until the deadline. Oh yes, if you have a nickname for your team, send that to me too. After I get the lineups, I'm not going to do much with them as I am taking a much-deserved vacation and won't have Internet access for about a week. The polling will be well in progress by then, but I've always preferred settling things on the field - even if it is just a cyber-field. Thanks everyone for your participation. Dola--
HB, do you have all the all-time ballparks? Can we choose our home parks? That would be great. |

I have most of them, but not quite all. And sorry, all teams are assigned to the neutral ballpark. I wanted a "pure" reading of how good these players and teams are and the neutral park comes closest to that. Maybe another time. P.S. Thanks for the lineup. |

I also set my lineup based on rest/rust factors and injuries. How are they handled in the game? Are we using minor injuries, or are players constrained to the number of games they consistently played IRL?

Catchers will definitely need to be rested every 10 games or so, pitchers need their rest, and other positions less so. Since these are (almost) all great players, there are no limits on the number of games each can play. There will be injuries, most minor, but a few can last 40 games or more. Bench strength figures to be important. |

Also, I dont have DMB, but I'm figuring that the number after spot starter is the percentage of games that the player will play (i.e. a player set to 10% will start every tenth game). Is the same true for pitchers?

That's not quite right. By default, Diamond Mind sets up spot play so that if a player is spotted 10% of the time, in each game there is a 10% chance that he will start, and not that he will start each 10th game. The same goes for pitchers - a set chance to replace the person in the rotation each time out. I'll have to dig deep into the rule book, but I think it can be set up the way you mention. I will have to get back to you on that. |

Actually, HB, that's close enough for me. I don't want to be that regular. I just wanted to make sure that the percentages were overall chances to start rather than something relating to the usage patterns of the league or something.
Don't trounble yourself about it. I just wanted to make sure that I had the general idea. Thanks. |

Got a question for ya HB. If 1 of our players go down will we be allowed to adjust our strategies or are you just gonna let it run?

Good question. I've thought of three ways it could go: 1) Sim a week per day, slowing things down during the playoffs. This will take about a month to run, and it allows things to unfold (relatively) slowly, but it doesn't leave much margin for error, as there will probably be about an 18 hour window for changes. 2) Sim a month every 3-4 days. This would take about 3-4 weeks to run and would allow plenty of time for discussion on what's happened before the present becomes the past, but a month is a pretty long time and a lot can happen. 3) Sim two weeks every two days. A compromise between (1) and (2). More time for changes, but less time to reflect. It doesn't matter to me which option is chosen. I'll set up a poll in the oft-ignored Dynasty Forum Polls section and abide by the wishes of the majority. What I'm not going to allow is people to pick up players to replaces ones that are hurt (or plain sucking wind). Sorry, but ya gotta dance with the guys you brung. EDIT: The poll is ready; please vote. Last edited by Honolulu Blue : 02-12-2004 at 05:55 PM. |

Looks good except for two things: 1) You can't pinch hit with someone who's already in the starting lineup (see Scott Rolen, depth chart vs. LHP) 2) You probably want to use Righetti to set up against lefties and Beck vs. righties rather than the other way around. And I'm looking forward to this too. |

I don't want you to think I've abndoned this, but I just don't think I can do a better managing job than the computer, especially without seeing the converted stats for my Negro Leaguers. Just make sure Ted Williams is batting in the 3 spot and Mathewson, Pedro Martinez and Satchel Paige are starting.

I'm psyched as well, while I don't think my team will hold up to a vote I think that it may turn out better on the simulation side of things. Add in the chance to see actual boxscores and break balls and whatnot and this is gonna be a real fun thing. Much thanks to HB for running it.

OK, I'm back. Thanks to everyone who turned their lineups in. I really appreciate it. I think you'll enjoy the results - well, at least some of you will...
Bishop: The computer manager insisted on putting Ted in the #4 spot. Per your orders, I moved him up to #3 with Hack in the cleanup spot vs. lefties and Larry Walker vs. righties. Chief Rum: The default manager tendencies should be fine. The guys who can run will run, the guys who can bunt will do so, etc. No need to adjust your lineup. If you guys should happen to do some trading while I'm gone, just post your adjusted lineup here and I'll make sure to get those changes in. I plan to run the first set of games on Sunday, Feb. 22, but I might have to delay them until Monday. To amuse you until then, I have a set of analysis and predictions that will be covered in the next post. |

Predictions
DISCLAIMERS: Don't take any of this seriously and don't take any of it personally.
East Division: Ramzavail 88-74 Isiddiqui 87-75 BishopMVP 84-78 vtbub 66-96 A superficially impressive division that has three decent-to-good clubs and one also-ran. Ramzavail has good overall team hitting (bolstered by a high batting average) and one of the best staffs in the league. Their good balance should power them to the top of the division. Isiddiqui's bold choice of having only 6 pitchers might pay off, since all six are solid or better. However, should one of them be felled by injury or ineffectiveness... the results could be gruesome. Bishop figures to have the best staff in the league, but the offense is subpar for this group. Vtbub can't compete in such fast company, as neither their hitting nor pitching measures up. Midwestern Division: Honolulu Blue 84-78 Bearcat729 83-79 TheLionKing 83-79 Coffee Warlord 72-90 HB and his manager seem to believe that power and walks are the best way to fuel an offense. They may be right, but the team average is likely to be disappointing. The pitching and defense should be average or above. Bearcat's team doesn't stand out in any category, but they also have no major weaknesses. In this division, that might be enough. TLK's hitters are good enough to lead them to glory, but the pitchers are a little vulnerable to the long ball, and that might be their downfall. The Warlordians' staff doesn't match up to the others around the league, and that's likely to cause them to have a long season. West Division: Oykib 84-78 Chief Rum 83-79 Sooner333 82-80 Vince 82-80 This figures to be the most competitive division with any of the four teams able to take the division. Oykib's eclectic mix of players from around the world has just enough oomph to lead them to glory. A high OBP looks to be the team highlight. The Rum Runners have the most power in the league and they'll score more than their share of runs. However, the staff is a little wild and might cause them to be just short here. Sooner and Vince are rated equally here and both have similar offenses that will get on base some but are a little short on power. Sooner's staff figures to give up more hits, fewer walks, and fewer home runs than average. Vince's staff is unexceptional in the major categories. International Division: Maple Leafs 92-70 ntndeacon 76-86 Suicane75 76-86 Booj 74-88 This rates as the most UNbalanced division with one great team and the rest unimpressive at best. Maple Leafs should lead the league in scoring as they have it all - a good average, great OBP, lots of power, and even some speed. Their pitching staff figures to be in the top half of the league. Overall they look best. As for the rest of the division, ntndeacon's offense and defense look to be equally substandard, Suicane will have a little trouble scoring runs and preventing the same, and though Booj has a pretty good pitching staff, the offense looks to be a little wanting. ======================================== Playoffs 1st round: (8) TheLionKing vs. (1) Maple Leafs This isn't a great matchup for TLK as Maple Leafs does the same things they do, only better. Maple Leafs in 4. (7) Chief Rum vs. (2) Ramzavail Ramzavail should keep CR's power in check and prevail here. Ramzavail in 4. (6) BishopMVP vs. (3) Oykib Bishop's pitching and defense should save the day, so I'm picking a mild upset. BishopMVP in 5. (5) Isiddiqui vs. (4) Honolulu Blue It should be a close series between evenly matched teams, but Isiddiqui should take it. Isiddiqui in 5. Playoffs 2nd round: (6) BishopMVP vs. (1) Maple Leafs If any team can keep Maple Leaf's offense in check it's Bishop. I don't think they can do it. Maple Leafs in 6. (5) Isiddiqui vs. (2) Ramzavail This is a coin flip, but I'm going with the home team here. Ramzavail in 7. Championship: (2) Ramzavail vs. (1) Maple Leafs The two best offenses in the league square off. This should be another tight series, Maple Leafs' first real test. They will fail as Ramzavail comes home with the crown! Ramzavail in 7. ================================== Try not to laugh too hard when I'm wrong, OK? |

It's good to be in a tough division though...whichever of us gets out of it, we'll know we have a strong team.

Damn my squad stumbled coming out of the gate...
But I've got a patient man at the helm. He'll turn things around. |

![]() A couple observations - What the heck happened to my pitching? Also, you have Paige listed as leading the league in shutouts, but on my roster he has none. Tom Seaver is the one with 2. Interesting that Buck Ewing has 30 K's already. Most he had in a season was 32. Overall, looks great, if only my team can start winning some more. |

A bunch of close loses really hurts but Im confident Helton & Strawberry will pick it up, and Carlton and Eckersley, they have to get better, right? Right? Please god let them get better.

Yeah I was interested in this sim to see how guys fare across time, too. We can't really go on a two week sample size for anything. But I am suprised that I am last in the league in turning the double play. I figured that I had the best up the middle defense in the league. It could be the flyball slant of my staff is more extreme than I thought. But even Rod Carew has more DPs than J.H. Lloyd.-- and four times as many to boot. I'm also interested because I've been thinking of picking up DMB. |

Still looking for a lefty or switch hitting outfielder or 1st baseman. Have plenty of spare parts to offer. Make me an offer.
