Wink Reindeer Games III

Reindeer Games III

This is a team participation game, more specifically a 12-stage distance race amongst 12 reindeer. Any member of FOFC can play. Your deer is based on the month of your FOFC Join Date, as noted below:

January = Dasher
February = Dancer
March = Prancer
April = Vixen
May = Comet
June = Cupid
July = Donner
August = Blitzen
September = Egg Nog
October = Mistletoe
November = Jingle Bells
December = Rudolph

The race is split into 12 stages. Each stage has a 8-hour deadline from when I first post it, OR whenever commands have been posted for 11 of the 12 deer (the 12th deer gets the last available command by default).

You may only post a command for your team’s deer. You may edit or delete your post, but precedence is given to the sequence of commands, so be careful with regard to timing. Unless later deleted, the first command posted for a team invalidates any later commands posted by that team for that stage.

The object of the race is to go the farthest distance. Each deer will always get at least one four-sided die roll (d4) worth of distance each stage. What else happens depends on the commands given each deer for the stage.

There are 12 commands, and you can only use each one once for your deer. There are only 12 commands per stage as well, and they are used up in order of posting for that stage!

> d6: A six-sided die is rolled for your deer’s distance instead of a d4 [this command is available twice]
> d8: An eight-sided die is rolled for your deer’s distance instead of a d4.
> d10: A 10-sided die is rolled for your deer’s distance instead of a d4.
> Slipstream: Gives a boost based on the performance of an adjacent* deer; one-half of the target deer’s distance for the turn is added to yours; must specify target deer
> Hoof kick: slows down an adjacent* deer by –d4; must specify target deer
> Antler slash: slows down an adjacent* deer by –d6; must specify target deer
> Evade: Blocks any other command against or utilizing your deer
> Steady pace: You mirror the stage distance of a deer immediately ahead of you or tied; must specify target deer
> Feint: By posting this command you may steal a command for a deer that is posted after yours in that stage. Each deer may only be the target of a feint once for the race. Must specify target deer by deadline.
> Magic burst: you steal one distance point for that stage from all adjacent* deer
> Wind gusts: the targeted deer’s distance for the stage is halved after all other modifications; must specify target deer

Other possible commands:
> Santa’s favorite: This is a one-time-only command for the entire race, so only one deer will be able to use it. Your deer advances 50% of its total distance for that stage.
> Ho ho ho! You’ve been feinted. This counts as your command for the stage.

*An adjacent deer is defined as one with a total distance at the beginning of the stage that is tied or plus/minus one away from yours

1st Stage about to begin...the deer are at the post...AND THEY'RE OFF!

The Stage 1 deadline is exactly 8 hours from this post. Note that I have reduced the deadline from 24 to 8 hours to try and keep things flowing.

Remember to post targets for your commands, as necessary.

Hey, WSU, a semantic suggestion. Don't allow editing of posts- if you want to redo your change, you have to delete your previous post and make a new one at the bottom of the stack, otherwise the top one stands. As it is now, since they're done in the order received, what's to say I don't steal JAG's command?

I think the editing is supposed to do one main thing: Encourage quick posting, since you'll get first command dibs, might have a chance to change based on someone posting afterwards, and if you want to use feint, you can choose to feint anyone's commands (since everyone will be posting after you).

EDIT: Aside from the chaos that commands could be changed by additional teammates posting new and/or different commands.

Yup, this is correct. Of course the strategy of when to pull the trigger on the key commands (since your deer can only use them once) is the kicker.

By the way...nice move, Radii!

Jingle Bells' opening magic burst left several deer stunned at the start line, but Donner's wind gusts cut JB's advantage and Mistletoe, Vixen, and Egg Nog kept close.

Results after 1st stage:
8 Jingle Bells (Nov) d4 + magic burst – wind gusts
7 Mistletoe (Oct) d4 + slipstream (Jingle Bells)
7 Vixen (Apr) paces (Jingle Bells)
5 Egg Nog (Sep) d10
3 Blitzen (Aug) d4
3 Cupid (Jun) d4
2 Dasher (Jan) d4
2 Prancer (Mar) d4
1 Comet (May) d4
1 Donner (Jul) d4
0 Rudolph (Dec) d4
0 Dancer (Feb) d4

The second stage will start tonight.

Um... you can't do that. Donner is way behind you, not an adjacent reindeer. Plus, you've already used your slipstream for the game.

How does Santa's Favorite work? And is Donner's move truly invalid as I suggested?

Santa's Favorite will provide 1/2 of the deer's total distance as the result for that stage. I was intending it as a tough strategy choice on when to pull the trigger on it, since early it isn't as valuable, but the longer you wait someone else could score big with it. I'm assuming Mistletoe's move is largely defensive, since it's only worth 4 to him (50% of 7, rounded up).

And yeah, you were correct. Mistletoe has already Slipstreamed so that command is no longer available, and Donner was not adjacent in any case (although I think he was probably intending Jingle Bells as the target again).
