Just got this in my email. First of all, I've never heard of WAMU Bank. Second of all, the page is hosted on an aol member site. WTF? Couldn't they try to hide it just a little better than that?

WAMU is short for Washington Mutual Bank.

Very poorly designed scam, but then again, I would think most people that get sucked in by these things aren't smart enough to look at the link at wonder about the address.

Of course, anyone with a brain knows that a bank wouldn't ask to give personal info like this over e-mail in the first place.

Kids. Kids are downloading these kits and playing with them. If just a few people fall for it, they get to play with those profiles (or sell/trade them).

EDIT...It will be down shortly. I just showed the URL to someone that is a syadmin for AOL...although it is a funny try.

WaMu just started getting into the Chicago market, and they have ads EVERYWHERE. If you get WGN and watch that for a while, you're bound to see a few of their commercials.

Hey, give the WAMU guys a break. They ran it by their Bankers Pen and they thought it was a bad idea to ask for ATM and pin numbers so they had to do it.

Yeah, when I was out there last summer I opened a WAMU account, knowing it'd be easy to transfer stuff once I was back in Seattle.

What's funny about WAMU's expansion is that their ad campaigns in the late '80's/early '90's was all about how, unlike almost every other bank in the state, they weren't some "outsiders" from California moving into town but were the last Washington-based major bank in the state.

Like I said, if you get WGN, you'll see it. The commercials also star one of the Walters from Seinfeld. "Get well, get well soon, we wish you to get well!"

Along the lines of phishing, I get about 5-10 of these a day. Most of them from "jewelers" or "aritsts" or something like that. Apparently, in the UK, they can't write very well...

HELLO,
My name is Paul Baker and I am an artist.I live in United Kingdom, with
the love of my life that my wife, two kids, four cats, one dog and the love
of my life.
It is definitely a full house. I have been doing artwork since I was a
small child. That gives me about 23 years of experience.
I majored in art in high school and took a few college art courses.
Most of my work
is done in either pencil or airbrush mixed with color pencils. I have
recently
added designing and creating artwork on the computer. I have
been selling my art for the last 3 years and have had my work featured
on trading cards, prints and in magazines.I have sold in galleries and
to private collectors from all around the world. I am always facing
serious difficulties when it comes to selling my art works to
Americans, they are always offering to pay with a US POSTAL MONEY ORDER,
which is difficult for me to cash here in United Kingdom.
I am looking for a representative in the states who will be working for me
as a partime orker and i will be willing to pay %10 for every
transaction, which wouldnt affect ur present state of work, someone who
would help me recieve payments from my customers in the states.i mean
someone that is responsible and reliable, cause the cost of coming to
the state and getting payments is very expensive,i am working on
setting up a branch in the states,so for now i need a representative
in the united states who will be handling the payment aspect. These
payments are in money order and they would come to you in your name,
so all you need do is cash the money order deduct your percentage and
wire the rest back. But the problem i have is trust,But i have my way
of getting anyone that gets away with our money,i mean the FBI branch
in Washington gets involved. It wouldnt cost u any amount,u are to
receive payments which will be sent to u by fedex or usps from my
business patners, which would come in form of a money order then to
cash it and send the cash to me via western union money transfer or
moneygram money ransfer, all transfer fees should be deducted from the
money. If you are interested, please get back to me as soon as
possible.

Regards
Paul Baker

What came first the chicken or the egg?

Anyone here asking themselves if these posts about WaMu have resulted in the WaMu banner ads that are now appearing on this very site?

Curious?

very rarely, financial institutions and other businesses don't have the resources to spend on special investigation units and law enforcement will generally not touch stuff like this unless someone hands a slam dunk case to them.

Losses incurred by financial institutions are passed on to consumers in the form of higer fees (invisible). It is all just the cost of doing business. The real visible damage is the effect to a person who has their identity stolen and the 80 plus hours they spend trying to correct it. Not to mention the money paid restoring their identity.
