Bad Casting in Movies

I just saw a commercial for "Sahara" with Matthew McConaughey and Penelope Cruz. "Sahara" is a book that was written by Clive Cussler. Cussler has a hero named Dirk Pitt that is like an American James Bond, and Pitt has a sidekick called Al Giordino. Giordino is supposed to be a stocky, muscular, Italian-American man in his early 40s.

So, who do they get to play the part of Giordino? Steve Zahn. Now, I like Zahn and think he is a pretty funny actor, but this casting is way off. The Dirk Pitt series has the potential to produce a number of sequels, so I am really surprised that they chose Zahn here.

Any other Cussler fans put off by this a little bit?

Any other good examples of horrendous miscastings in movies adapted from books?

Not a huge disaster but I still don't think of Tom Hanks when I think "Robert Langdon."

Swaggs,

I read a review of Saharra and they are changing the Giordino character into a lazy, slacker - who will be used for comic relief. Not sure why, but they felt the story needed it.

From a Cussler website:

"Cussler recently optioned all 14 of his novels featuring Dirk Pitt® to Crusader Entertainment with script and casting approval."

So he must have been okay with the change.

There's an ad for this movie on ESPN's college basketball scores page, and Cruz and Zahn's names are under the wrong pictures. Kinda funny.

The one where they had two of the Wayans brothers playing white females. I mean, come on, are you telling me they couldn't find some white females to play those parts?

I got it. The untimate bad casting.....The great White Hype.

This movie is about Boxing's Heavyweight Championship of the World and its quest for a white contender.

Tha champ: Damon Wayans as James 'The Grim Reaper' Roper
The Challenger: Peter Berg as Terry Conklin

I don't think both these guys put together could tip the scales enough to qualify as a Heavyweight.

Comming soon.....

Could some please explain to me the Part Adam Sandler is going to play in the remake of the longest Yard?

BTW----The script for RoadHouse was originally written for Sylvester Stallone. That is how come they kept saying "I thought you would be bigger". Swayze got the part at the last minute when they could not meat Stallones asking price.

I'm looking forward to the Longest Yard, actually.

I guess rather than thinking of it as a remake, I'll be thinking of it as a SNL production movie about (one of my favorite subjects) football.

I'd be more put off by Matthew McConaughey as the lead character. I haven't read the books, but a wanna be texas stoner doesn't really seem to me like the American James Bond.

BTW - I always thought an old Harrison Ford was a bad casting job for the Jack Ryan roles as well.

As opposed to say Ben Affleck?

What about Eddie Murphy playing not only Dr. Sherman Klump, but also playing his alter ego: Buddy Love?!? One role would be challenging enough, but the fact that they had him play two characters kind of ruined it for me. They cast the rest of the Klump family well, though.

Val Kilmer was a very good Batman, very moody and dark (like the character was written to be.) George Clooney always reminds me of the handyman on Facts of Life, no matter what role he plays.

I think Kilmer was the best Batman, too.

Speaking of Clooney. He would probably be the perfect choice to play Dirk Pitt. He or Travolta both have the "cool" factor, but Clooney's age makes him a better fit.

I'm not sure who best fits the profile of Giordino, but I know it isn't Steve Zahn.
