Screenname changes...

Am I the only one at FOFC wondering where these long time 2,000+ posters come from? Who's Chris? Who's Karlifornia? At least Omnivore put his old name in his signature. These three I figured out by now, but did I miss any of them? And when did this name change trend start?

I suggest a list of name changes in this thread.

I knew about Chris and Omnivore, but this Karlifornia dude had me wondering. Took quite a lucky shot to figure it out... From this thread:

Allthough I listen to all types of music, I find that most of my collection has a lot of R&B (lot more old school than the new stuff).

Actually, they can't do it at will. They ask. I have no idea why. Quite often, I get the rather cryptic explanation of something along the lines of "this screen name has tired itself out."

If I'd realize the ire these sorts of things caused, I'd probably have been less likely to do it. I just did it on a whim and it was something I'd thought about for ages, but never knew was possible. So when I knew it was, I just wrote SkyDog a 5,000 treatise and he changed on the condition that I never write a PM that long to anyone, ever again.

Ok, so I didn't.

But like I said, had I know my changing it would've been part of this whole "Who the f is this person? or Why the heck would you wanna do that?" furor, well..I'd have just stayed DC and been done with it. What can I say? peer pressure is a bitch.

Please me more specific. Is the dumbest trend the name changes, or people buying skydog's CDs?

The word "trend" implies more than one person doing it.

It's a good thing I reserved MIJB19 already.

Also, I think I forgot to list MacroGuy in the initial post.

Perhaps posting in an official name change announcement thread, linked in the reference thread, would be a useful prerequisite when taking a new handle...?

I've wanted to have a new name for the longest time, but I didn't know it was possible until I saw SkyDog had altered ApatheticLurker's name. After Dark Cloud's name changed, I realized that I could change mine. I guess I just got tired of RadioFriendlyUnitShifter..it was long and clumsy.

S'ok. It's like the movies. The sequel is always under appreciated. I mean, who saw Pet Semetary II?

When I created a new name for Subby, I created another user account as a placeholder for his old name so nobody else could use it.

The problem with the namechanges for me is that the handle is pretty much how I "recognize" people. I can eventually glen who is typing a post by their style...sometimes, but it's not easy. Hence the confusion.

Maybe we can get a list of who is who, or was who, in this thread? For easy reference?

I have the same problem, you see the username and associate facts you know about the person, maybe even a picture or something visual to help you.

There's this guy at my karate school who also changed his name in real life. Just had it done. Darn it's tough to address him by his new name, but at least I see his face when I talk to him, that's not the case here...

another forum I'm on allows name changes until the person has 1,000 posts, thinking that you have created an identity for yourself by that time.
