It's a good way of picking teams. After throwing sticks into the pile, you separate them into 2 piles. You then have your 2 teams.

Having done it numerous times while playing at the park, since it is random you always have those moments where after everyone grabs their stick you look around and go... "Ugh, this is not going to be pretty."
