College Football: Coach "Hot Seat" Ratings

Saw this on the WVU board and thought it was worthy of passing along, since we are, sadly, so far from football season right now.

Kentucky is the must win? They know they're Kentucky, right?

Kind of lame to consider that only one head coach is legitimately on the hot seat.

I have to think NC State's Chuck Amato (2.5) is far more likely to be fired with a sub-.500 record than, say, Maryland's Ralph Friedgen (2.5) or UNC's John Bunting (3.0).

I also think that Miami's Larry Coker (3.0) and Tennessee's Phil Fulmer (2.5), and probably Michigan's Lloyd Carr (2.5), could not survive a season with 7 or fewer wins next year.

Hmm. I'm going to have to disagree with Bellotti getting a "0" at Oregon - he was taking an awful lot of heat going into last year, having come off his first losing season. He's been by far the most successful Head Coach at Oregon, but with success comes raised expectations. There have been whispers for a few years now that Bellotti's greatest success was due to the presence of Jeff Tedford on his staff. Finding (and keeping) good assistants like Gary Crowton would appear to be key to Bellotti maintaining his history of success.

I'm not saying he's on the hot seat by any means, but I think he's more like a 1.0 on their scale than a 0.0 - he's quite safe, but he's not completely untouchable either. I'd also say that Bill Doba at WSU is probably closer to a 3.0 than a 2.5 - there is growing disappointment around Pullman about the decline of the team since Mike Price left. I think he got Ty Willingham at the UW correct.

On the whole, I think the ratings were a bit too conservative.

But with me moving into town, expectations will rise suddenly.

Uhhhh...Mike Price is "on the bubble"? Who the fuck is the moron who made this list? CMP has become an icon in El Paso and it would take some sort of extremely serious meltdown before he was ever fired...

Oops...the formatting got me. The 3 is number of years on the job, not his rating. That 0 looks much, MUCH better. :o

Completely agree. I think one of those big jobs will open up this year, and Carr might be in a lot of trouble with Notre Dame, Michigan St, and Ohio St all looking like they will have very good teams. There's a good chance they'll lose all three of those games, and they might get smoked in a couple of them. Some people need to really step up or Carr is going to have problems.

Many wanted Brooks removed at Kentucky last year. It was kind of expected, thus the very hot seat this year.

I don't think their fans expect SEC titles, but they expect some competitiveness. The shift of football power in KY to Louisville kind of irks them. For all their troubles, they actually have a decent passionate football fanbase in KY.

And Franchione is definitely in the 4 to 4.5 range at A&M. If he doesn't go at least 9-3 this season, and not get blown out by Texas or Oklahoma, he's probably gone.

Chuck's probably more at 3.0, maybe 3.5. However, even if he went sub-.500, I don't think he'll be fired this year (unless it was a collapse of 3-8 or worse proportions). It'd be too close on the heels of the Sendek departure and the beating the school took nationally from that.

The Fridge had a superb start to his time at Maryland, so I don't think he should be in any trouble for a little bit yet. His main concern is winning with his own recruits. He proved he could win a lot with his predecessor's recruits, but not since the team largely was built with his kids.

Bunting ought to be higher, maybe 3.5-4, because he's come rather close to getting booted, but managed to have a decent year when he needed it to save his bacon.

Bunting has the beginnings of a nice recruiting class going. It's amazing what kind of time that can buy a coach.

John L. Smith is a 5. No question. The AD talks in circles when asked about Smith's future.

If MSU doesn't show marked improvement this season and go to a decent bowl game, Smith is gone.

I think that, outside of scandel or health problems, there is absolutely no way that Bunting is fired this season. He has the makings of an amazing recruiting class in place, he is an alum, and is only in his third year. I think both Bunting and the Fridge are free and clear this season, but if their teams are terrible this season, they will be in danger next year.

Amato, just from the local news and board I read, seems like he is in a make-or-break type situation right now. He could secure himself nicely with a 9+ win season (which is in the realm of possibility) or get himself fired with a 3 or 4 win season (which is also possible).

Third? Try sixth year upcoming. He took over in 2001. Combined record over five years? 24-36.

Oh, and Carolina's classes are always, always overrated. Two words: "Ronald Curry".

Can anyone count the number of people rated 4 or higher? Reminds me of an episode of "The Critic"...

Duke Phillips: "Your job is to rate movies on a scale of good to excellent."

Jay Sherman: "What if a movie's bad?"

Duke Phillips: "That's what good's for."
