San Diego: Mentors, we don't need no stinken Mentors!

I agreed with San Diego's decision to give the starting job to Rivers, but I didn't think they would also fire every otherQB on their roster with any NFL experience. Kind of like playing russian roulette with a loaded semi-automatic handgun......Bang your dead, Bang your dead, Bang your dead.

What idiot out there would even think of beginning a season with a starting QB that has never started an NFL game, a backup QB that has never thrown an NFL pass, and a 3rd string QB that has never played in an NFL game?

No experience required?

And people were laughing when the Raiders snagged Jeff George.

If Rivers goes down, what is the upside of AJ Feeley? None. The season is over. So why not try a different barrell?

I don't know that there are serviceable veteran quarterbacks available that really make sense -- hence Oakland Jeff George. And I think NFL teams are finally learning that an unproven youngster with upside makes more sense than a retread with no upside. Think Tom Brady, Jake Delhomme and Mark Bulger, not A.J. Feeley, Gus Frerotte and any Huard.

I agree. Nobody has a backup QB worth a damn anymore. It's better to just throw the youngster in the mix.

Nobody? Untrue. Take a look at backup QBs like David Garrard, backup QB for the Jags for years now.

I agree, Garrard is good, and I should have mentioned him, but who else is a good backup? Jeff Garcia? Trent Dilfer?

Well, that's the thing. If they were good enough to start, they would be starting. You have to have a different standard for a backup QB- someone who is good enough that if the rest of your team is firing on all cylinders, he won't lose you the game.

So, by that token, there are a few decent backups around the league. Whoever isn't starting in Chicago isn't a bad backup- Grossman with potential, Griese as a starter for quite a few years. Garcia and Dilfer who you mentioned join others like Collins and Ferotte who were starters for quite a few years elsewhere. Boller was crap as a starter but not bad as a backup with the lower standards.

A better completion percentage than Reggie Ball.

That he's extremely injury prone.

You know that 8 games is a tiny sample size. He will be fine this year.

Someone's team should sign Tommy Maddox. He's still out there.

I think Joey Harrington makes a decent backup QB now that he's out of Detroit.

(To be fair, I've never really bought into Grossman out of college but others seem to think differently. That said, 8 games is too small of a sample size)

It appears they also need another OLB with Foley being shot. Why would this get major Breaking News status?
