December 5, 2006 - In a shocking display of parenting prowess, a Rock Hill, S.C. woman reportedly called police and had them arrest her son after he was caught opening a Christmas present early. After receiving the call, police arrested the boy and charged him with petty larceny.

The Rock Hill Herald reported that the child's great-grandmother had warned him repeatedly about opening his present early, protestations that he apparently ignored. The present in question was a Game Boy Advance.

"He took it without permission. He wanted it. He just took it," the 63-year-old great-grandmother told the Herald.

When the boy's mother found the package lying unwrapped and empty under the tree, she immediately approached the child, who proceeded to lie to her. After threatening him with calling the police, the boy apparently returned the toy to his begrudging mother, who then called the police anyway. Although he was not jailed, the two officers responding to the call did charge him with petty larceny.

The boy's mother told the Herald that she had reached the end of her rope with the child, and no longer knew what else to do with him. She claimed that she has been struggling with his constant behavior problems for a while now, and could no longer handle his misconduct.

"I'm trying to get him some kind of help," the 27-year-old mother told the paper. "He's the type of kid who doesn't believe anything until it happens."

According to the boy's mother, he had already been caught shoplifting, stealing money from her, and punching a police officer. She told the Rock Hill Herald that she hopes this arrest will put a stop to his errant ways, because she is worried about his safety. The newspaper reported that the mother plans on having her son placed in the custody of the state Department of Juvenile Justice in Colombia at his court appearance.

Holy cow....63 year old great grandmother, 27 year old Mother, probably, what, a 10 year old kid? Hitting GG Grandmother before 75 is a pretty impressive feat.

I think I went back and posted some more impressions (if not I meant to

). There were some bugs with the game that was somewhat annoying and I wasn't a big fan of the way combat was implemented, but overall I enjoyed the game.

I get Rock Hill and Fort Mill mixed up. Isn't Rock Hill the poor, shabby town that seems crime-ridden every time I visit my parents in Charlotte and watch the news there? If so, then this sort of story should hardly come as a shock then.

I was thinking the same thing when I read the thread.

It seems that all she did here was teach the kid not to trust anyone, because they'd rat him out anyway. I'm sure this is going to make this already stable kid much better by handling it this way.

Looks like this was a convienient opportunity for the family to get the kid, as we used to say back home, "sent off". Not to say that's a bad idea, I'm just saying that I think if it wasn't the present, it would have just been whatever opportunity presented itself next.

It's been quite a number of years (17 or so) since I was there, but I remember it being a pretty nice little town. And knowing my aunt and uncle, I don't think they would live there if it were a cesspool...

Not sure what your thinking of. Neither Rick Hill nor Fort Mill really fit that description. Both have really high mean avg income (though low desire for new team and even lower competition for entertainment, come to think of it not real high on the trend setting city meter either)

Chester or Gastonia really seems like where you may be thinking?

Damn making it worse my wife swears we discussed this for 20 minutes the other night....I really have been working too much

Oh, yeah, Gastonia really fits that description, but I felt like there were a lot of negative stories coming out of Rock Hill when I visited one time. (I believe it is Rock Hill because Fort Mill is near where my sister lives which is in that really upscale, near-snobbish "town" of Baxter just off I-77.) Maybe it was just a bad sample.

Yeah, I know. That's why I put town in quotes. It has all the amenities like a town center and so forth, but it's still just a neighborhood. It's a nice enough area, but I thought it tacky that my sister's family got one of those "BAX" stickers to put on their SUV.
