Who is your National Champion?

I'm deliberately leaving the criteria vague. If you want to do it who is most deserving, who you'd vote #1, who you think would win a playoff go for it.

I want to say USC, but it is impossible for me to argue USC with a straight face due to their loss against Stanford. Now, if we were debating who I think would win a tourney right now, I'd go with USC. However, under the current rule set, I voted for LSU.

I think Trout was most deserving this year, for sure

Georgia steamrolled the unbeaten juggernaught that was Hawaii. It's obvious they should be #1.

Its tough, but I really think SC could take LSU down right now. So I voted SC.

I voted WV, because I think they are the best team.

But, LSU is rightfully the national champion.

Has to be LSU. Georgia didn't win their conference, that's not anyones fault but their own.

Voted LSU...works for me. I can't really say anyone else deserved it more, and they won it within the system that every team was aware of before the season started.

This type of argument just doesn't do it for me this year. You can say that about everyone this year. Miles and his "LSU didn't lose in regulation" crap is great spin but, really, the Tigers lost at home to an Arkansas team that was bludgeoned by Missouri. Speaking of the other Tigers, they didn't even win their conference. Kansas didn't even play for their title. Same with Georgia. USC was hurt, but still had no excuse losing to 41 point underdog Stanford. We can play this game with everyone this year. I think if you want to discount someone, you can't just pick one wart- gotta look at the whole body of work.

I somewhat agree SI but it was the way they lost the game, not so much the fact that they lost it.

I did like this season a lot, tho. Only this year could we have KU and Mizzou in such rarified air and then have them play. It was such a great season and I just don't think we'll ever have such a great feeling as we do now as Kansas fans so it's time to just sit back and enjoy it. So unexpected, so fan exceeding expectations, and so fun.

By that same token of this being such a fluke season, I really dislike that LSU got gifted the chance to win a home game for the national title. Not much that could be done about it, but still, that just bugs me.

*Well Missouri lost to Oklahoma twice so I dont see how it is possible to give it to them
*Kansas lost to Missouri once and didnt get the chance to play the sooners, they have a case
*LSU lost two games in overtime, won their conference tournament(arguably the strongest conference) and the title game convincingly, easily the best resume
*Ohio State lost to LSU and an overated Illinois team, no case
*Georgia probably the strongest team at the end of the season but the two SEC losses didnt allow them to play in the SEC championship, a case could be made because they were playing the best ball at the end of the season
*USC Its just too hard to explain the Stanford loss, they were likely the 2nd strongest team at the end of the season however
*West Virginia played in an underated conference beating some very quality teams, they choked in the game that would get them into the Nat'l Championship, they have a small case as well because of the convincing Oklahoma win but that Pitt loss was a mystery

My arguement for Mizzou is thus: Of all the teams with 2 losses, they have the 2 best losses. No one, no one, can claim to have lost to better teams(or 1 team twice). Mizzou didnt blow it against Stanford, Kentucky, or any of the other average at best teams the other contenders fell to. On top of that, they beat Kansas, arkansas who beat LSU, Illinois who beat OSU.

They beat two BCS teams in the regular season, could any of the others claim that? If so, im sorry, but i believe Mizzou has the best wins and the best losses during the season. Post-season is hard to factor in, but they beat the crap out of who they were given.

I would agree that they had to two best losses out of any of the teams but then we would get into the case that Georgia could also have. How can the Nat'l champion not even win their conference? This would also leave Oklahoma back in the debate along with WVirginia as the Sooners pounded on Mizzou twice and WVir had its way with the Sooners. It was basically just a wierd year all around, no team really deserved it but a lot of teams could be mentioned.

I think what it boils down to is that you could throw 8 teams in a hat and any of the 8 could win a tournament this year as there wasnt that normally dominating team.

Mizzou Named National Champs By One BCS Computer Ranking
Anderson-Hester Computer Rankings Lists Tigers On Top Jan. 17, 2008

Columbia, Mo. - Based on the strength of its 12-2 season, the 2007 Missouri Football team was named national champions according to the Anderson & Hester College Football Computer Rankings. The poll, which is one of six computer rankings to officially be used by the Bowl Championship Series (BCS) rankings, made its updates following bowl season, and when the smoke cleared, Mizzou stood atop the rankings, .005 points ahead of conference rival Kansas.

The deciding factor between the Tigers and Jayhawks likely came down to strength of schedule, as MU's schedule was rated as the nation's 25th-toughest by Anderson & Hester, while KU's rated 61st. Mizzou's schedule strength was highest among the top eight teams in the rankings, as well.

Mizzou finished ranked fourth in the final Associated Press top-25, marking the highest-ever finish for MU in the final AP poll. The Tigers were sixth in the final BCS poll, which were not updated after bowl season.

Head Coach Gary Pinkel's team will begin winter conditioning next week, as school starts back up on Jan. 22nd. Spring practice begins March 11th, and will conclude with the annual Black & Gold Spring Game on April 19th.

Mizzou returns 16 players (including 10 on defense) who started in the Tigers' 38-7 dismantling of 25th-ranked Arkansas on Jan. 1st in the AT&T Cotton Bowl Classic. Many early top-25 polls for the 2008 season have the Tigers ranked among the top-five for next year.

The Pitt loss was not a mystery. Their head coach was angling for a new job at the time instead of focusing on getting his team ready for the game.

So if 1 of the 6 Computer ratings picked Missouri to end the season, who did the other 5 systems pick? Anyone know?

My fundamental problem with Kansas, Mizzou, and Georgia is that I don't think you should be the national champion if you can't win your conference. That should be rule #1 for entry.

Agreed. Of course if there was a playoff system, I would not be against including teams that did not win their conference. But on the current "throw a dart at a page and proclaim a team national champs" system, I think that has to be a disqualifier.
