The Super Bowl XLIII Thread
So, now that we know the teams involved, who do you think will win Super Bowl XLIII?

It's already decided. I voted Pitt meaning Arizona will win. Bet and bet big on this game, it's in the bag.

And I didn't even have to send you a bribe this time Danny! The Cards will be the underdog again and use that to their benefit.

With the way the teams played today, I could see this game going either way. Even though most of the players have never been there, having Warner as the leader of the team will continue to help them immensely. Last edited by Danny : 01-18-2009 at 10:12 PM. |

I'll be cheering for Arizona, but I think the Steelers will win.

Arizona.
Somebody's got to believe in them at some point. They'll have the best QB and best WR in the game, if nothing else, and a giant chip on their shoulder. |

I just don't think Pittsburgh can be beaten by a team as one dimensional as the Cards. I'm also very interested in how the blow up between the OC and Boldin plays out over the coming two weeks.

I think the week off will help the Steelers. Ward should be healthy and the Cards may lose a little of their momentum.

Yeah, I really don't think we can say the Cards are one-dimensional any more after they rushed very well over three pretty good defenses. If anything, I wonder if focusing on the pass and not rushing James or Hightower that much during the regular season helped keep both running backs (and their offensive line) relatively fresh for this Super Bowl run. |

Seriously, was that Arizona/Philly game awesome or what? That was the most enjoyable NFL game I've watched this year. I knew I'd be cheering for the NFC team over the AFC team, as I'd like to see someone new win it all. Therefore, go Cardinals!

I can't believe the opening line is only Pittsburgh (-5).
I thought it would be much bigger. I was thinking more around 10pts.

Let's look at the Cardinals rushing.
Against the Eagles they managed 102 yds at a 3.5 avg Against the Panthers they managed 145 yds at a 3.4 avg Against the Falcons they managed 86 yds at a 3.1 avg They're maybe sticking to the rush better than in the regular season, but their average per rush throughout the playoffs is poor.

Yards per carry is a relatively poor statistic for measuring rushing effectiveness over the entire game. This is something that FOF mirrors pretty well. Just b/c a team has a lower rushing average does not mean that the running game was in-effective because the offense goes into a clock-killing mode. For example, look at that Panthers game. Because the Cards were up by such a wide margin early in the game, its common sense that the offense would go into a conservative clock-killing mode which the defense would read and stuff the run. If you watched the Eagles game, Arizona ran very effectively in the first half and went into that conservative mode in the second. Last edited by RedKingGold : 01-19-2009 at 11:28 AM. |

I'm not surprised. I picked Pittsburgh to win, although I hope Arizona wins. However, I expect this to be a close game as Arizona has shown they can score on anyone as long as Fitzgerald remains healthy. |

I guess it depends on your definition of very effective. They had three big runs(16, 12, 22), two 4 or five yard runs and 7 runs of three yards or less in the first half. They averaged a bit over five yds. per carry, but I don't think they can break the long run as easily against the Steelers. I'm no Steelers fan, and I'm pulling for the Cards, but I don't think their offense has enough balance to beat the Steelers. When the Steelers can play one-dimensional they're damn near immovable.

I'm not sure the Steelers exactly can pull off the big run either. Pittsburgh has had only one 45+ yard rush in the last two seasons (thank you Najeh Davenport). |

Most recent info I found is that in 07, each Colt received $73k for winning the Super Bowl. Sure would be nice if each Steeler chipped in a tiny portion of that bonus to cover the $45k cleanup and any extra security/other costs so the fans could have a parade.
edit: Should also add that I think a team should foot the bill for a victory parade anyway. Last edited by Logan : 01-29-2009 at 12:09 PM. |

Well I'm now calling for Obama ro be removed from office. He's pulling for the Steelers to win.
He's long been a Steelers fan, second to the Bears of course, and the Pittsburgh owner and Mike Tomlin were big supporters during his campaign. And Bill Bidwell being a McCain supporter probably didn't help either. So I'm really pulling for the Cards to win so I can hear Obama's reaction when they come to visit the White House |
