View Full Version : OT - What do we learn from the "hot chicks" threads?

Okay, it's not why I come to this site. But in my mind, it's not the worst stuff here. I'm not complaining.

I wonder if there's anything that we might pick up from the "rate the hot chicks" threads and polls (and related stuff) that has become something of an institution around here recently.

I know, I'm analytical to a fault. Still... I'm betting that this thread turns into a better source of amusement than analysis.

I'll offer one thought - a lot of this "hot chick" stuff seems to be a function of photography (or perhaps more appropriately stated, "presentation").

I'm basically convinced that men will drool over practically any woman who:

-is not dramatically overweight
-is not covered with festering boils
-has reasonably normal features
-and is captured with a fairly alluring pose

I don't really excuse myself from this phenomenon... I just am aware that it seems to take place.

Some of the women in the "hot chicks" threads, I'm guessing, aren't really all that spectacular in "real life." But, get them with proper makup and lighting, and dress them so they have the proper "come hither" look and/or the obligatory "clothes barely covering the essentials" pose, and you have the FOFC crowd trying to type with one hand. Fascinating.

To give you a serious answer, I think I learn that most guys only accept the cookie-cutter type of good-looking "hot chick."

To me it means that the images our media and culture throw at us are either exactly what we want, or they have successfully convinced us that these girls are exactly what we want.

To me, most of them are so generic they aren't anything to get really excited about.

I have not participated in these polls, but of course, I always took a peek at the pictures posted.

Could it be said that the ladies who were showing skin in the photos made it further into the game?

QuikSand

Another thing seems to be that the more revealing the photo, the more liekly that a "real" woman would show some sort of real life folds and wrinkles... the sort of thing that doesn't sell in the "hot chick" analysis. So, youy inevitably end up skewing away from, say, Valerie Bertinell (deliberate jab) and toward the sort of super-thin types that seem to be doing well in the contests.

Super thin with one (well, two) exceptions. We are Americans after all... in large part.

I think you hit the nail on the head Marmel.

It's like the age-old wet t-shirt contest chant, "Skin to win. Skin to win."

I've also been surpised about how relatively poorly blondes have done. If you take Barbie as a guide for what the prototypical ideal woman would be, I'm not sure many of the finalists fit.

Hmm, I think you're probably right, though it has been interesting to see the differing opinions on many of the "hot chicks". One who someone thought was incredibly hot would be the complete opposite for someone else.

I've always had a theory about attractiveness; that you can't see things just in terms of "hot", but need to "rate" (not a pc term, I know) attractiveness on three levels: "hotness", which is sheer animal attraction, "cuteness", which harder to describe but has to do with youth, energy, etc., and "beauty", which really more deals with facial features, grace, etc. There are many hot chicks which really aren't cute or beautiful, many beautiful women who aren't necessarily the hottest, etc.

Back a decade or so ago I thought one of the most "well rounded" in these categories was Meg Ryan, cute, beautiful and hot all at the same time (IMO, anyway).

I do not agree with one of your assessments about what makes a "hot chick":

"is not dramatically overweight"

I think that the demand here is still for rail-thin women. I've seen comments in the hot chick threads like--"she seems a little chubby" used to describe women who, at worst, do not look malnourished.

I also remember someone comment that he did not like the new girl intern in the Dell commercials because "she looks like she could become a porker."--The potential to become fat makes one ugly.

There was also that thread about the guy who was deciding whether to sleep with one cheerleader sister or another (or something like that), where he made the comment that "you should not sleep with ugly chicks. You wouldn't sleep with fat chicks, so why is ugly any different?"--as if fat transcends ugly to become its own brand of repulsion.

And of course, the description of a generic bad looking woman: "some fat ugly chick"--again, as if fat transcends ugly to become its own brand of repulsion.

I am not picking on this board--these sentiments are expressed anytime I talk to guys.

I just find it interesting that weight is, from what I have observed, by FAR the #1 factor in deciding whether a woman is hot or not.

Considering that most Americans are overweight, I find it very interesting. Or maybe it is because so many of us are overweight that we decide that it has to be a beauty thing.

Or--as one person has mused--the people who design fashion are gay men. These are people who do not like women's bodies. Therefore, they are pushing their ideal of the male body down our throats by projecting the super-skinny woman as the perfect woman. And we all eat it up because we are sheep. I don't agree with this theory, but I don't dismiss it out of hand, either.

The only people of whom you can make fun in this PC world are fat people and rednecks.

Ok, ok, now hold on a second. My comment about the new Dell girl....I was posting that because I liked the other intern better that they had gotten rid of. I think the current one is cute enough, but she reminds me of girls in college who were cute, but not quite as cute some 40 pounds later. I just made the same comment about Genevieve from Trading Places; attractive, but a few years down the road, someone I could easily see being a LOT bigger than she is now.

I personally like women who are NOT rail thin; I like women who have a nice hourglass figure (if anyone knows who they are, some of my favorite all-time playboy playmates are Donna Edmondson, Petra Verkaik, Sharry Konopski, Kerry Kendall and Marina Baker - back before they all had fake boobs and were blonde. Edit: Forgot Tanya Beyer...beautiful woman....).

I was pulling quotes from memory. I should have noted that in my post. I am sorry if I have misquoted or misstated anyone's statement.

I was trying to make a more generic point by using a diversity of specific examples. I meant no offense to anyone's specific statements and I am sorry if that came across.

Actually I think it's specifically related to cleavage. the chicks with their boobs popping out of whatever they are wearing do better they do in the hot chick survivor thing.

I've often found that disappointing as the women I find the most stunningly beautiful are often fully clothed.

In general, I think everyone has a different taste in the type of women they prefer, as evident in the Hot Chick Survivor polls...how some of them went out before others in beyond me.

That said, I do agree with the assessment that society's ideal of a beautiful women does hold sway with most men. There are obviously the exceptions, but overall, I think there is a cookie-cutter mentality. Maybe it has something to do with always wanting more and never being satisfied...you always want the perfect woman (and by that I mean society's ideal of a perfect woman) but she really doesn't exist.

I think that most men just dream about that, but are based in reality...otherwise the Human Race would have been extinct a while ago.

It is interesting that this all seems to be perpetrated by the Media. You can look at tribes who have no media and find very different ideals in what they look for in women.

This would be a good poll, but I will spare everyone. Out of the three descriptions above (cute, beautiful, and hot), I tend to favor cute. Cute girls have an inner light that beautiful or hot women don't. Cute girls have a lot more personality.

I remember watching a show where an anthropologist was espousing his theory regarding instinctive traits of human sexuality.

According to him, men were subconciously attracted to women with "clear whites of the eyes" and "unblemished skin", both apparently indications of good health. Rounded hips as an indication of fertility was also mentioned.

Women were subconciously attracted to men with "broad shoulders tapering down like a V to the waist" (an indication of the ability to protect) as well as a "strong butt" (apparently an indication of the ability to penetrate/procreate).

Cleavage was attractive to men because the shape is analogous to a woman's posterior. Moist succulent lips on the face were attractive because it made men instinctively think of, well...

It was an interesting theory...

I can't admit to looking at the whites of eyes but unblemished skin, cleavage and moist red lips are all attractive IMO.

I think Quiksand, as usual, hit the nail on the head. Virtually all women can be made to look attractive with the right lighting, makeup, and pose and don't forget the airbrushing technique.

I learned that a fair amount of the fellows on this board have poor taste. Well... if you consider being unable to rate a group of amzingly to unbelievably attractice women acurately, they do.

Seriously, I do see the trend of cookie cutter girls making the finals. We seem to have a parade of mid-to-late twenties brunette caucasians that have name recognition, but not enough to name recognition to cause a backlash.

I think this points to the lemming-like nature of mankind. I guess I can't complain. I've bought every Final Fantasy because I love FFVII. But they've all pretty much sucked after #7.

No offense taken :) I may make comments about weight now and then, maybe sometimes I'm a little too harsh. But, I'm harsh on my own weight too :P

As for the voting in the hot chick polls, if they were a "beauty" poll or a "cuteness" poll, I might have personally voted differently. Is that Vergara (sp?) chick hot? Heck yeah. Is she beautiful? Not as much. Not as cute either. But she has a *great* body. Jolene Blalock is also hot but not as cute or beautiful (of course, they both got bounced relatively early). Now Faith Hill, she's beautiful (again, IMO). And Katie Holmes is darned cute...and has a pretty good body too. And I think Kodos' personality element of cuteness is right on, and the important part of my definition that I was missing.

I think the current one is cute enough, but she reminds me of girls in college who were cute, but not quite as cute some 40 pounds later. I just made the same comment about Genevieve from Trading Places; attractive, but a few years down the road, someone I could easily see being a LOT bigger than she is now. Not to name drop -- OK, I'm pretty much name dropping -- but since Genevieve has been in my car, I can offer a personal analysis. She's a "big" woman in the sense that she is very tall and muscular (which I think is more fair to say than "big boned.") She had heels on most of the time I saw her, but I would say she is at least 5-10. She wasn't particularly "flabby." She hugged me at one point and I don't recall thinking she was soft. But what I'm sure everyone here will like, here breasts were huge.

On a personal level, I think that is what makes her attractive to most guys. If it weren't for the shape of her body, she wouldn't make a lot of "hot" lists. So in her case, if she added 40 pounds, it would be devestating to her rankings, where as someone else who has other pluses might be able to pull it off.

Considering that most Americans are overweight, I find it very interesting. Or maybe it is because so many of us are overweight that we decide that it has to be a beauty thing. This somewhat ties into what I find so ironic about the hot lists and more specificially the "I'd hit it" lists -- guys tend to overlook their own significant flaws when judging others and tend to become much more choosy in judging celebrities than judging women in their own life.

Based on the "What the hell do you look like?" threads, there is no one here who could date Reese Whitherspoon, although a couple might pull it off if they had a lot more money. Yet guys who are significantly overweight and not the best looking knife in the drawer turn their nose up at women who if they were sitting at the next table in a bar they would be drooling over.

There is nothing more ironic than an overweight guy rejecting a woman because she is perceived to be overweight. I say that because my observation has shown me that guys who are overweight will think a woman is overweight and therefore unattractive even if she is less overweight than he is.

Kate Winslett is someone I find very attractive and she is an actress who the media makes out to be always battling here weight. If she is overweight -- and that's a judgement call -- she is certainly a lot less overweight than I am. How can I reject her for a flaw when my own flaw is much worse?

On he FHM list above, I have no doubt that most guys at FOFC would rate a large percentage of these women as not being their cup of tea, yet if presented the opportunity they would go at it like a dog to a bone. Not to inspire a famous line, but I think most guys -- some marriage vows notwithstanding -- would have sex with Bea Arthur is she came onto them.

Oh, I figured Genevieve was pretty tall. And I'm not saying she isn't just fine as she is, I think she's very attractive - you just wonder if someday she's going to pull a Kirstie Alley ;) And yeah, her breasts do usually look pretty huge on TV. :)

Now...this brings me to something that I've been noticing watching HGTV. Is it me, or are some of these women Amazon-tall? Candice Olson (Devine Design), ok, she's an ex-volleyball player. But Debbie Travis (DT Facelift, DT Painted House) and Vicki Norris (sometimes on Mission Organization) also seem to be near that 6' range. Nothing groundbreaking, just an idle observation...

I strongly prefer women with a little more meat (the Genevieve & Kate Winslet references are good).

seeing a chick 10-20 lbs underweight is much, much more of a turnoff than a woman 10-20 over
