With our fourth pick we select:

Casper The Friendly Ghost
2'0"
0lbs
.01 40(hes a ghost for gods sakes!)
NFL comparison: Dwight Freeny

Positives:Another guy with great notoriety over multiple generations. Was VERY popular a generation to a generation and a half ago. Still going strong. Inspired a fairly successful move(or two?) not too long ago.
Negatives:A bit undersized. Perhaps a good thing though, as its impossible to block a guy that weighs nothing, unless you have the cartoon ghostbusters on your OLine.
Summary:Would be a terror as a speed rushing DE meant to bring fear in the QB's eyes. May have to work on the "friendly" part.

For those of you keeping track, this gives us four characters with the article "The" in their full cartoon names.

Every team needs, a villian. Especially one of the most inept villians of all time! Not only did he control an army, but he got his ass kicked every week by basically 5 guys.

Cobra Commander

The bule hooded CC was way better than the helmet one IMO. He may be the worst army leader of all time, but man was he cool :)

AE selects one of the most underrated cartoon characters of all time!
and hey, if he doesnt like it. he can pick for me.

Top Cat

Inspired by hit '50s TV comedy series The Phil Silvers Show (1955-1959) and the exploits of Ernest Bilko and his workshy motor-pool platoon, Hanna Barbera's Top Cat premiered in 1961 and ran for 30 episodes.

It remains one of the studios most enduring creations...

Top Cat - TC to his close friends - is the sharp talking leader of a merry bunch of Manhattan alley cats: Fancy Fancy, Spook, Benny, Brain and Choo Choo.

After drafting a hardcore 80's toon icon, and 2 Japanese Toon Legends, I think that it's about time I drafted some money-makers.

For the final pick of the 4th round, I select Genie from Disney's Aladdin... one of the Top-5 highest grossing animated films ever ($217.3 million)....and voiced by none other than Robin Williams.

For the first pick of the 5th round, I select Simba from Disney's The Lion King... the highest grossing animated film ever ($312.8 million).

With a combined taking of over $500 mil and millions more due to merchandising, and subsequent series', these two are lucky to have fallen this late in the draft.

It's my favorite comic (tho Jim Davis should have hung it up a while ago): Garfield! Sure, the largest body of Garfield work is in comics, but he had a long lived cartoon on CBS (7 seasons I believe) as well as 7 cartoon specials like the classic Christmas and Halloween specials. Not only that but he was voiced by the man with the awesome name and the even more awesome voice, Lorenzo Music (c'mon, you can't tell me that name doesn't just roll off the tongue: Lorenzooooo Muuuuusiiiic!). Garfield got quite a few endorsements in the early-mid 90s and those are the direct result of his voice work. Lots of great reoccuring gags like the Klotzman diamond, Binky the clown, and there's even an episode with the official title of "The Creature That Lived in the Refrigerator Behind the Mayonaisse, Next to the Ketchup, and to the Left of the Coleslaw." Plus, the show was better at metahumor than, I even hesitate to say, the Simpsons.

I know who my next two are, but it looks like I have quite a bit of time to wait and likely they will leave the board :( But, even as a little of a reach, I had to have the lethargic cat on my team.

With our fifth pick we select:

The Shredder (from teenage mutant ninja turtles)
6'2"
220lbs
4.5 40
NFL Comparison: Ray Lewis

Positives: How has all characters from TMNT lasted this long? Its insane! I could argue, that perhaps outside of say spongebob squarpants today, TMNT enjoyed the most popular and successfull run of any cartoon since the 70s. Think about the toys, think about the three movies, think about the network battles over the cartoon rights! All of it was unprecedented. Sure it began as a comic book, but it got ALL of its popularity through the cartoon. Shredder is a key part of the cartoon. There are four turtles, so you can't really pick one of them as most important. Splinter is great, but he isn't involved enough to pick. While Shredder, is just the main badass bad guy. Oh yea, and I believe there is a new TMNT cartoon today.
Negatives: Like popeye, substance abuse could be a problem. Although Super Shredder would make one hell of a lineman.
Conclusion: Gives us a very good bad guy to add to our lineup. Hard hitting no nonsense safety perhaps?

Thats his 40 without his shredder pads on. Besides, the mans in better shape than some NFL guys that supposedly run 4.5s, so I think its a pretty good estimate. Now his foot soldiers, those guys would be lucky to hit 5.0. They are the slowest most unathletic cast of teamates. All the most reason to vote Shredder, hes a one man team!

I dont know... Anyone who gets screwed over by four fat turtles and an old stoned rat can't be that good

You have something on the Rat, although think of Jerry Rice, hes not that muscular or fast, but Jerry Rice can still beat lots of teams.

As far as the turtles, I wouldn't call them fat, if i recall from the cartoons and toys, they had some pretty serious muscle development on 'em. And if I recall Shredder was always able to run away from them. Although Shredders toughness maybe should be brought into question, as should his wonderlic scores, if he can't outsmart a rodent and 4 turtles. If I recall he even had to team up with an extra brain in a jar to create evil plans. Bleh, maybe we won't leave him in coverage, maybe he will just be a blitzing SS.

Danny
02-15-2004, 05:45 PM
My first every action figure as a kid was actually a ninja turtle when they first came out. I ended up with the whole set and watched the tv show every saturday morning. One of my favorites although its hard to pick one specific character from the show.

Space Ghost

> The number one Hanna-Barberra action character
> Was revived in the 90's with his own late night talk show
> Has more star power than every character with the possible exception of Scooby-Doo
> Has shown equal facility with drama and comedy
> Can kick some serious ass
> Only character in cartoon history who turns invisible that's worth a damn
> Power bands can do anything but polish your shoes

Tigercat
02-15-2004, 09:44 PM
Mel Kiper: "I just don't understand that draft strategy. First they pick someone who was already selected, and then they go from a man whos can fly into space to a woman who can't eat an apple without fainting. Thats like going from Warren Sapp to Bill Gramatica. But I thought Ryan Leaf was the next Dan Marino, what do I know?"

The Shredder (from teenage mutant ninja turtles)
6'2"

NFL Comparison: Ray Lewis

Positives: How has all characters from TMNT lasted this long? Its insane! I could argue, that perhaps outside of say spongebob squarpants today, TMNT enjoyed the most popular and successfull run of any cartoon since the 70s. I think Spongebob has a long way to go to overtake the Ninja Turtles. Spongebob has only had 4 seasons whereas many other shows have gone much longer (for instance, TMNT went 10 seasons, DBZ and Pokemon are over 200 episodes, and the Looney Tunes have been on for decades). I have been reticent to take any turtles because, well, there's basically 6 main characters, and unless there's a turtle run, one or more of them will still be sitting on the board and none are really more popular than any others. I love the comparison to Ray Lewis :)

With our sixth pick we select:

Gumby
Height:??
Weight:??
40:??
NFL Comparison:John Gruden(what cartoon character's facial expressions can't be compared to Gruden?)

Positives:Had production in four different decades. Very popular during his time. Groundbreaking in style. Great athletic ability and control over his body.
Negatives:Not as widely known today. He seems to stop and go alot. Questionable acceleration.
Summary:Underdog type that could be a steal at this point in the draft. Starting WR who could adjust to the ball on the fly.

Just my opinion, but Gumby should be disqualified as he is not a cartoon character. He is claymation. Two different things.

Tigercat
02-17-2004, 08:00 PM
But then is computer animation a cartoon?

oykib
02-17-2004, 08:02 PM
Just my opinion, but Gumby should be disqualified as he is not a cartoon character. He is claymation. Two different things.

I disagree. He is still animation. We've already approved Computer Graphics cartoons.

I considered Gumby myself.

I think I'd draw the line at puppets.

Danny
02-17-2004, 08:02 PM
Hmmm, those are still animation though right?

Danny
02-17-2004, 08:03 PM
I dont know, perhaps an expert can shine light on this terribly difficult situation :).

Tigercat
02-17-2004, 08:04 PM
My thinking is this, Gumby was clearly produced as a cartoon type operation. As was Toy Story, Finding Nemo, Ect. Computer animation is used in live action movies as well, that does not make Toy Story any less of a cartoon.

Edit:And it is ClayMATION a form of animation using clay.

Danny
02-17-2004, 08:08 PM
car·toon ( P ) Pronunciation Key (kär-tn)
n.

3. An animated cartoon.

Clay·ma·tion ( P ) Pronunciation Key (kl-mshn)

A service mark used for an animation process in which clay figurines are manipulated and filmed to produce an image of lifelike movement.

oykib
02-17-2004, 08:12 PM
Since we've got drafters on either side, why don't we go with the side that's seconded and thirded by the other drafters first. Right now accepting or declining have both been nominated. We can consider Eagle Eye, Tigercat, and myself to already have voted.

Tigercat
02-17-2004, 08:14 PM
Notice the very definition of claymation says an animation process. Computer animation is an offshoot of animation just as much as claymation is. If we wanted to stick to handdrawn cartoons that would be understandable, but we crossed that bridge a long, long time ago in this draft!

Danny
02-17-2004, 08:15 PM
Lets just give it to him :)

sterlingice
02-17-2004, 08:24 PM
Lets just give it to him :)
I've been tossing this around, too, on my draft list, but if someone put a gun to my head, I'd lean towards "cartoon character". If we're using the strictest definition, then, no, he isn't a cartoon in the sense that he's not drawn with ink and paint. But, as pointed out, he is animated, and if you stopped 100 non-stupid people (ie who actually thought about the question for a second) on the street, I bet slightly more than half would answer "yes" to the question "Would you consider Gumby a cartoon character?"

SI

kingfc22
02-17-2004, 09:05 PM
I'd say give it to him.

Tigercat
02-17-2004, 09:08 PM
Our team is just happy to have THE controversal pick in the draft. We are hopeing that it will translate to higher Gumby jersey sales. Pokey jerseys sold seperately.

Suicane75
02-17-2004, 11:01 PM
Just my opinion, but i don't consider Gumby a cartoon character either. But for the purposes of the draft I say let it go.

You will all be sorry you didnt pick Gumby when hes catching TDs on your pathetic 2 dimensional characters! And to think, passed up because of Marij... i mean cause hes made out of clay. Yea, thats the problem.

OK, screw it, im not gonna go old just to get wins in a poll, im building my team with who I REALLY want from here on in. With that said, my pick, the oldest character in the draft and an Excellllllllllent choice, Mr. Burns.

sterlingice
02-21-2004, 01:44 AM
I've been wanting a villain for a couple of rounds now. At the beginning of the draft, I knew I wanted one of four. Well, one was picked a few rounds ago (Cobra Commander), one just left the board less than an hour ago (Mr Burns), so rather than risk losing one of my others, I'll go with one now. From my favorite cartoon growing up, no, he's not quite the larger than life hero that his opponent was but Megatron certainly was a worthy adversary for Optimus Prime and now he joins my team.

SI

PsychoCop
02-21-2004, 05:34 AM
My Picks:

Megatron was ruthless, unmerciful and soulless... but the perfect foil to Megatron's evil lordship was STARSCREAM, voiced by none other than Chris Latta... Starscream was just as cut-throat and maybe even more kniving than Megatron was... too bad he had to die in the Movie. hahaha.

My next pick... BraveStarr... nothing say cool like an entire galaxy turned into a huge western, whose protagonist has a shotgun-wielding, talking horse as a sidekick. Eyes of the Hawk, Ears of the Wolf, Strength of the Bear, Speed of the Puma!!!!

sterlingice
02-21-2004, 12:28 PM
As much as I'd love to go back to the 80s and keep picking guys from there, I can't deny TMNT and their tremedous popularity any longer. It was an ensemble cast, but I was always partial to Leonardo, their leader. That leaves 1 drafted and 3 to go, get 'em while their hot ;)

Dumbo
Height: 6'6" (on two legs, ears extended, with plenty of room to grow)
Weight: a lot
40 time: a lot
NFL comparison: Glibert Brown + Ted Washington + Grady Jackson

Positives: Like Gumby, I find this is another VERY VERY underrated character at this stage in the game. Over 60 years old, and still known UNIVERSALLY. If someone says another person has dumbo ears, everyone knows what they mean. Hes a big boy with room to grow. Earspan will help him clog running lanes on D.
Negatives:Athletic ability may be in question. Still a bit young.
Overall: Basic notoriety is near universal. Run clogging DT that will make a near immoveable object.

Not only do you get the famous comic character-- there's also the Magoo classics series. Jim Bachus has probably done the best voice acting in American history for this character.

There was someone else that I was going to take here. But I decided that I couldn't keep holding off on Magoo. I think the rumors of his bad eyesight are what made him fall down the draft board. But he's a steal here in the seventh round.

I was strongly considering him for one of my two picks but decided to go with who I got. When I snuck out and watched that show when it was on originally, I didn't get a lot of the jokes, but now I realize that clearly the censors had long fallen asleep before it was on and they could get away with murder. The episode musical number "Carpet Party" in the women's prison (yes, it is implying what you were thinking) in the episode "Aged Heat 2: Women in Heat" was just the most flagrant example of this. I died laughing when I saw that for the first time in syndication on Comedy Central. For all the low brow sex and toilet humor, there was a ton of high minded jokes and satire hidden in a show you just didn't expect it in.

I'll the character who was responsible for the "Real" Robot Revolution in Japan. This was the change that gave us real Science Fiction and solid character construction as opposed to the "Super" Robots (Mazinger Z, Tetsujin 28/Gigantor, Combattler V) and Charicaturish heroes of earlier anime.

The revolution began with Gundam. Gundam was based on the the current astrophysical and metaphysical theroies and was a departure in that the war depicted was not a battle between good and evil-- rather it was the conflict between different cultures and ideologies.

The defining character of the series was

Char Aznable.

He was the villian whom everyone identified with. He secretly joined the corrupt Zabi familiy's army in order to et revenge for the murder of his father, the social revolutionary that built the state that the Zabis usurped.

This put him at odds with the heroes from the Earth Federation. But he was the character that everyone liked. Every mecha war story has a Char Aznable character.

The masked anti-hero is ever present-- an homage to the great Aznable. His popularity directly lead to the biggest cartoon franchise in Japan-- Gundam.

For our last pick we select:
The Bill on Capitol Hill (School House Rock)

So we decided to go with somewhat of a one trick pony here. School house rock, however, was quite a popular program, and its catchy little songs such as bill on capitol hill and conjuction junction infested the minds of a couple of generations of children. So we have decided to draft argueably the most popular character, the bill on capitol hill.

So now, if we want to protect our teams substance abuse users(coughPOPEYEcough) we have an advocate in DC.

Hey there was that obviously gay smurf too.(the artist one?) Although, I suppose the smurf with the mirror might have been too. Come to think of it, none of the smurfs really seemed to notice smurfette was female. Holy smurf, I think they might have all be smurfin gay.
