Disclaimer: This idea is not original, but I got it from every other draft thread, and I might as well try to end this thing And I pay homage to Maple Leafs for the ground rules, which have been modified slightly to account for the difference between cartoons and video games.

The draft: I'm looking for ten FOFCers to take part in a ten-round draft. Your drafting cartoon characters (with certain rules, see below). At the end of the draft, a winner will be determined by a vote. The criteria for choosing that winner will be up to the voters, but essentially you want to put together the best possible group of famous characters.

The rules:
1. This only includes Movie cartoons (Mickey Mouse, Nemo, Buzz....) and TV cartoons. Comic strips are not included.
2. Once a character is taken, he's off the board regardless of how many cartoons he's appeared in. If you take Scooby Doo, the next guy can't take Scooby Doo from the Hanna Barbara Laugh-a-lympics.
3. The character can exist in other mediums prior. However, only what they do in cartoons matter when taking into account the relevance of the character if they existed prior to a cartoon. For example, if you take Wolverine, his significance only relates to the X-men cartoon, not the comic, since it came first. Nor does the movie count, because it came from the Comic book. However, everything Bart Simpson spawned (music, phrases, shirts...) counts. This may seem unfair, but its the rules I'm laying down.
4. You can take any type of character (human, creature, male, female, good, bad, etc) as long as you can describe him/her/it in some way that we understand who you mean.
5. You're drafting specific characters, not general types. Bart Simpson from the Simpsons is OK. "the Simpsons" in general are not.
6. If you make an invalid pick based on these rules and someone points it out, you lose your pick. If necessary, be prepared to show some sort of evidence that your pick is valid.
7. Draft will go in serpentine order based off a random order. If needed, we'll put time limits on picks during the week.

I intend to sit on the sidelines and comment, do a mock draft, give my sleepers, surprises and stretches at the end/prior to each round. If you can't handle some good natured ribbing, then this isn't for you. If people want to shout out characters, thats cool. If needed, I will participate.

01-30-2004, 11:29 PM
Note: Once I get some people offering to be in it, I'll start mocking it up and stuff, do some random numbering, and then starting for real on Monday when I wake up. Hopefully this thing can start running smoothly while I am at school during the day, then I can make snide remarks when I get out of class.

If you can't be around the computer a lot during the draft, feel free to send me list ( you top 10 or 20), and I'll put those as your pick as they come up on the list. Hopefully it will move quickly , at least a pick an hour if possible, though I don't expect it to go all night.

Well, I'm going to bump it up to 12, since I'm trying to include as many people as possible. Edit: Now 15

The 12 in it, the I will use a random number to determine the order:
Note: THis is not the draft order, but the signup order
1. Suicane75
2. ardent enthusiast
3. Chubby
4. WSUCougar
5. TredWel
6. kingfc22
7. SirFozzie
8. k0ruptr
9. Ragone
10. Tigercat
11. BigJohn&TheLions
12. PsychoCop
13. oykib
14. EagleEye11

I'll start thinking of mock draft stuff and enter a Random Number generator. I'll post the results tomorrow, and we will start promptly at 8 AM on Monday. That being said, it will really be up to the first person to actually start with the picks. As I said ,hopefully an average of about a pick an hour during the daytime, then whatever through late night.

And yes, if you're wondering, all TV or Movie cartoon characters are eligible... so if you want to say some obscure cartoon from Botswana, so be it.

But to note: You can't say Botswana Scooby Doo if someone has already said Scooby Doo.

6. If you make an invalid pick based on these rules and someone points it out, you lose your pick. If necessary, be prepared to show some sort of evidence that your pick is valid. A couple of rules suggestions to float (and obviously if you think they're a bad idea, since it's your draft, just pass them up).

On #6- With only 10 picks in the draft, why not just say they lose the pick but get a chance to get a new pick (but it likely will be after a few others have already picked unless people jump on your pick immediately after you make it). Also, have a little of a statue of limitations on this so that someone in the 10th round can't say the person's pick in the 1st round is invalid.

On #3, I'm curious for a clarification since I'm kindof unclear. Let me think... trying to come up with an example, ok, let's say, the Powerpuff Girls, they were in cartoon form first and then had a movie. So does all of that count since they were cartoon first?

Again, just a couple of suggestions. Do with them as you will.

oooh! i get the first pick... hmmm... I'm pretty much a hardcore 80's toons fans, so you probably all know who I'm going to pick. :D

BUT I'm pretty much guessing that everyone's clamoring for either the head of the Disney Empire OR the head of the Warner Bros. Empire to be selected first... right?

So... I will still have to THINK! Yes, people. THINK! But heck, I'd probably go with my heart rather than my mind...

In my opinion, its more of a criteria to use when you think of significance. So if a cartoon was first in print (comic) form, its harder to say that all cultural significance that came after it was due to the animated cartoon series (So like the X-men were a comic, then a pretty good cartoon, then a movie). Its more of a vote criteria at the end in determining the "top" team. If you want to argue that an X-men movie only came about because of the awesome cartoon, feel free, you may convince people.

And Movie cartoons count as well. This is for things like Mickey Mouse, Nemo, the Antz or whatever.

(Disclaimer: This is my opinion only, so if you think other characters are better, thats cool)
Mock Top 10: (Part 1, 1-5)
1. Mickey Mouse - The Mouse is responsible for everything. Steamboat Mickey was the beginning of the celluloid cartoon. Some may put Bugs Bunny at the top, but the Mouse has lasted longer, has a theme park, and has spawned an empire that will seemingly never die. While he himself hasn't done the movie thing lately, his pioneering ways make him the top in my opinion.

2. Bugs Bunny - I wouldn't be surprised to see the "wascally wabbit" to go #1. He has done more than Mickey in the past 20 years and is on TV all the time. He too has spawned an empire as well, and is the face of the Loony Toons. He is more visible than Mickey these days, but he is the Larry Doby of the draft... he's just as good as the mouse and may be a little better, but the Mouse was the first.

3. Daffy Duck - Once you get out of the top 2, it becomes a much more wide open draft. I could see pick 3 going in a number of directions depending on personal preference. I prefer the duck myself. He's a big name at number 3, but has been stuck in 2nd fiddle mode for a long time. He's not the breakout star of the draft, but he is just as important as Bugs Bunny. "Duck Season, Rabbit Season" is one of the most famous exchanges in cartoon history, and it takes two to tango.

4. Fred Flinstone - He's not the biggest name, and I cold easily see him slip out of the first round for more contemporary characters. However, he is the basis for a lot of the oafish characters you see in cartoons today. His work can easily be seen in the characters of Homer Simpson or Peter Griffin. Plus, he had a hot wife, and Pebbles was hot when she grew up. He also spawned the Jetsons or anti-Flinstones. Of course, there was the two Flinstones movies... so...

5. Scooby-Doo - The dog is by far my favorite cartoon character ever, but he could go anywhere from 3rd to just at the end of the first round. I've seen top 10 lists where he wasn't even listed, but I don't know how he can fall that far. It really doesn't get any better than a scared dog eating a lot and solving crime capers. He also lent his considerable talents to the Laugh-a-lympics, and spawned a movie with the lovely Sarah Michelle Gellar (and the horrible Freddie Prinze).

Man, this is tougher than I thought trying to rank these fairly. The next top 10 later today.

And with the first pick of the FOFC Cartoon Character Draft...

Despite the severe popularity of the other cartoon characters, and the sheer financial success that they have spawned for their companies... I cannot deny the fact that I was born and raised in the 1980's. Screw picking the popular choices. No cartoon character has affected me in a greater way than this one... he made me jump for joy when he kicked ass... he made me cry when he died... no other character has had the same emotional pull as this one...

#1 - Optimus Prime - Leader of the Autobots, defender of the weak, protector of justice. From the cartoon "The Transformers". :) So there, I open this one with a SHOCKER!

sterlingice
02-02-2004, 06:47 AM
As much as I love Op (I have a poster in my room), I gotta go with one of the two empire giants with the #2 pick. Got a need for a franchise QB so I can't pass one up just because there's a nice flashy wideout in the draft. I've waffled back and forth as to which I want, but I think I'm going to go with the rabbit over the mouse. Can't go wrong with this pick either way.

1.2 Bugs Bunny

SI

Easy Mac
02-02-2004, 07:34 AM
Got to love the way these drafts start. While Optimus Prime is no doubt a great cartoon character, I just don't see him as top 5 material. Still a good pick, seeing as how PC's next pick won't be until the end of the 2nd round (remember, Snake Draft). This may be a bit more interesting than it could have been.

Nothing much to say on Bugs, he went around where he should, and a very solid first pick in the draft... you could see the elation on SI's face that he still had two franchise players available to him.

Come one Suicane, pick Peter Griffin so we can really have some fun.

PsychoCop

Round 1 Pick 4

Ardent Enthusiast picks - Mickey Mouse

chubby is up

Easy Mac
02-02-2004, 12:51 PM
Well, I'm a little surprised that Mickey dropped down to 4, I guess not being in a cartoon of note for the past 50 some odd year (Fantasia 2000 doesn't count) really hurts.

I'm a bit shocked Homer went as high as he did. I think Bart is more of the breakout star of the Simpsons, and the Homer era of the cartoon is among the weakest years of the series. But I guess getting a word in the dictionary is important.... just don't have a cow if I say this is too soon.

WSUCougar
02-02-2004, 12:53 PM
In truth, I was hoping to nab Homer with my first rounder. I think he's passed son Bart in the cartoon lexicon.

Easy Mac
02-02-2004, 12:55 PM
I dunno, Homer really became popular around the 6th or 7th season, and the show was on the tail-end of its "high-period." I think the last few seasons have really soured my feeling on Homer's value to the show.

WSUCougar
02-02-2004, 01:03 PM
Perhaps in terms of the show itself, but his societal impact continues to grow (like his beer gut). The fact that he was the cartoon star of a Visa ad for the Super Bowl is proof in itself, but everywhere you go, there is Homer.

Suicane75
02-02-2004, 01:14 PM
As soon as this draft was concieved I had Homer in mind as my first pick if he was still available. I understand the cultural impact of other characters but Homer to me defines the Simpsons.

#5 Goku (Dragonball, Dragonball Z, Dragonball GT)

All those Japanese and American zealots CAN'T be wrong. The star of 3 cartoon series (and magna). When the creator of the series, Akira Toriyama, tried to make Goku's son the new star of the story the fans revolted and Goku was brought back (and back and back and...). Regarded as one of the best action cartoons of all time, Goku was the star in a series that has over 500 episodes combined and over $3 billion in reltaed merchandise sales.

Unfortunately, you only get the cartoon. Dragonball was a manga first.

But that's still 500 episodes, 17 movies, and two TV specials.

#6 - Donald Duck

Aside from Mickey, easily the most recognizable Disney character. Brought a girlfriend, nephews, nieces, a rich uncle, whatever the hell Ludwig was, and countless other sidekicks and villians into the Disney mainstream. He and his cadre of mallards appeared in many cartoons and created many spinoffs over the last 70 years.

Well, it only took 5 picks before there was a mystery guest. I was actually thinking a Dragonball z guy might go pretty high, but seeing as how I don't know a damn thing about the show, I'll take this at face value.

Donny Duck is a playa, and is always a good pickup. He spawned a million cartoons (Ducktales, Darkwing Duck... ummm some other things).

WSUCougar is on the clock.

I would say Goku's a reach only because of who is picking. If you asked any kid under 10, they would know who he is. But, by that same token, why not Pikachu- he's as well known by kids and *also* well known by others. There are still legends on the board so I think it's a reach.

Then again, I looked up cartoon lists and ran across TVGuide.com's list and they were clearly on crack when they made it. Here's their top 10:

1. Bugs Bunny
2. Homer Simpson
3. Rocky and Bullwinkle
4. Beavis and Butt-head
5. The Grinch
6. Fred and Barney
7. Angelica Pickles<o =""></o>
8. Charlie Brown and Snoopy
9. SpongeBob SquarePants<o =""></o>
10. Cartman<o =""></o>

I think #4, 7, 9, and 10 show that this list was made by someone under 15 or at least with that mentality as these are not in my top 50. On top of that, I wouldn't have 3 or 5 in the top 10, but they would be in the top 30 (maybe- I haven't done the math). Mickey is a dismal 19th while Tom and Jerry are in the high 40s. Again, people on crack.

We select:

Popeye the Sailorman
5'9 190 pounds
NFL comparison: Bill Romanowski, David Boston

Positives: Been around for DECADES.(70 something years) Spawned years and years of cartoons, a popular eatery, a few morning variety type shows, and a bad movie. Don't let his age fool ya though, he can always be ready to fight thanks to his strong juice. Wait, are we sure that it isn't Romo?
Negatives: Spinich may contain banned substances. His 40 time is probably in the 6.0 range.
Conclusion: Projected as a franchise player and a bruiser of a RB

Or maybe I am thinking WAYYYY too much about cartoon characters.

Easy Mac
02-03-2004, 09:13 PM
Oh, and some analyis... Fat Albert is a large African American male. I think he's influential b/c of his skin color, but unfortunately it hasn't translated into more cartoon roles for blacks. (Besides Wendel and Carl Carlson in the Simpsons and Cleveland in Family Guy)

Popeye is a good pick. A guy who you can easily forget until you remember that he got some fine ass pussy. Plus he's buff

oykib
02-03-2004, 09:13 PM
Well I wanted Tom and Jerry...

But I'll settle for the main aprt of the duo, Tom. The true artistic force of the pair. There are many cartoons where Jerry is replaced by his nephew or the stupid duck or some such. But Tom is the constant.

They were the biggest cartoon act of the movie era. Their fame built the Hanna-Barberra studios which in turn gave us the majority of the famous American cartoon characters that we know today.

9-time Academy Award winner... Tom is known, literally... all over the world. In an indirect way He's even responsible for Cartoon Network, as it was Turner communications acquisition of the Hanna-Barberra studio that allowed CN to be established.

Tom was so big in the movie era that MGM used to replace the roaring lion in the logo witha hissing Tom before their cartoons.

Chubby

NEW RULE!

You now have 12 hours from the last pick to make a pick if you are on the clock. After 12 hours, the next person gets to go. You do not lose your pick, its just like the NFL draft, but you will have to pick from who is left.

This will only be done one at a time, however. So say 2 people in a row need to pick, someone else cannot jump them. Otherwise it gets too confusing.

Boop-oop-a-doop!

I select the first lady of cartoons. She's the most popular female lead character around the world and has a seventy-year history.

Betty Boop

She was the character through which Max Fleischer revolutionized cartoons. Her reels featured the likes of, then contemporary greats, Jazz and Swing luminaries like Cab Calloway, Louis Armstrong, and Don Redman. She was the last bastion of counter-cultural content in cartoons or comics for nearly thirty years (after the passing of the Hayes Act).

Even after the Hayes act, Fleischer kept trying to slip one past the goalie. Most Famously, There is a cartoon where betty sings to a Japanese audience. the english version is totally innocent, But she sings the "same" words in Japanese and basically entreats her Japanese audience to come to bed with her and boop-oop-a-doop!

I'll go with name recognition and artistic merit with this one...

Yogi Bear
6'8 500 pounds
4.8 40(wind aided with the rangers on his tail)
NFL comparison: Orlando Pace

Strengths: Been around for a long time. Popular with multiple generations. Has shown good footwork while defending his stolen baskets from the forrest rangers. His Wonderlic tests reveal him to be "Smarter than the average bear."
Negatives: Has already maxed out his potential. Is aged a bit, and has had a few too many of the previously mentioned baskets.

With our 2nd round pick, we select

SPEED RACER

The guy's a cartoon behemoth, a forerunner of Japanese animation. Countless afternoons were devoted to the adventures of Speed & the Mach 5, Trixie, Spridle & Chim Chim, Pops, and the mysterious Racer X. Sometimes I still pretend to eat Spridle and Chim-Chim style, and anyone who watched Speed Racer knows what that means.

A Look Back at Round 1:

1. PsychoCop - Optimus Prime
A little bit of a shock here in with the first pick. Definitely one of the most popular cartoon characters in the 80's and beyond, but is he really more important that even the Looney Toons?
Notoriety - 10 among men, 6 among women... so about an 8.3.
Cartoons - 9.5. He was only in one (Transformers) and it kicked ass, but the many attempts at updating it (Beast Wars...) knock it from a 10.
Misc. - 9.9. Some pimp ass toys and a pimp ass movie.
Longevity - 7.3. He may be forgotten after a while unless they start doing good Transformers stuff.
avg. Score - 8.75

2. sterlingice - Bugs Bunny
The rabbit went #2, and I think this is the exact right pick for him.

Notoriety - 10. Everyone knows him.
Cartoons - 9.8. They are always a classic, but they need to stop making shitty movies.
Misc. - 10. Even the shitty movies couldn't ruin his cultural impact.
Longevity - 10. He's lasted this long, and kids still watch the Looney Toons.
avg. Score - 9.95

3. Suicane75 - Homer Simpson
I wouldn't have thought Homer would go anywhere near the top 10, yet here we are. He has been funny, but I don't think the character that is generally cited as the reason for the near collapse of a series can be in the top 3.
Notoriety - 9. Practically everyone knows Homer, but I'm sure a few don't.
Cartoons - 7.1. The Simpsons is one of my top 2, but his part in it is overrated.
Misc. - 9.2. D'oh... its in the dictionary. His phrases and beer are popular.
Longevity - 7.1. He may last a long while (Hell, 14 years so far?), but who knows after that.
avg. Score - 8.1

4. ardent enthusiast - Mickey Mouse
Where would we be without Walt Disney. Yes, we would be spared Ted William's frozen head, there would be no gay day at some theme partk, and we would lose valuable phallic symbols. But Mickey really started the cartoon revolution, and its a shame to see him out of the top 3.
Notoriety - 10. Everyone knows Mickey... or at least Britney Spears.
Cartoons - 9.3. Fantasia is considered a classic (I hate it, hence the lower score), and he was the "first" cartoon.
Misc. - 10. He has a frickin' empire.
Longevity - 10. Its been what, a million years now? He does need a cartoon though.
avg. Score - 9.825

5. Chubby - Goku (Dragonball, Dragonball Z, Dragonball GT)
This is the first pick that made me say What the Fuck... not too much to comment on, except that Chubby wants obscurity.
Notoriety - 6. I say who, but I'm sure a lot of nerds and 'lil wanged Japanese boys can tell me.
Cartoons - 6. There's a few Dragonball tv shows I guess... These are just random scores here.
Misc. - 9. Ummm... there's a bunch of crappy video games and a Kool-Aid cult or something.
Longevity - 4. it may last in Japan, but this is America bitch.
Score - 6.25

6. TredWel - Donald Duck
The Winnie to my Pooh, or something like that. He'll always be 2nd fiddle in the Magic Kingdom, but the Duck still kicks ass... even without pants. And his bitch is hot... mmmmm Daisy.
Notoriety - 9.5. Practically everyone knows who he is.
Cartoons - 8.2. He is very famous, but I couldn't name one cartoon where he is the star. However,...
Misc. - 9.3. He did spawn Darkwing Duck, Duck Tales, and the career of Launch Pad McQuack.
Longevity - 9.7. People will remember the duck for a while.
Score - 9.175

7. WSUCougar - Scooby Doo
This is my favorite cartoon character... its a DOG ON DRUGS FOLKS!!!!!!! It doesn't get any better... plus, if it wasn't for his show, I never would have begun masturbating to hot red heads.
Notoriety - 9.4. Again practically everyone knows who Scooby Doo is.
Cartoons - A Biased 9.9. Scooby-Doo was great, and not even the crapiness of Scrappy could kill this score.
Misc. - 9.1. He made smoking pot even more mainstream, scooby snacks, and saved the career of Freddie Prinze jr.
Longevity - 9. Hopefully the dog will last forever... even Casey Casum won't die.
Score - 9.35

8. BigJohn&TheLions - Fat Albert
Hey...Hey...Hey. The country's favorite fat black cartoon character... its when Cosby was at his creative best IMHO.
Notoriety - 8.0 Unfortunately, not everyone knows who he is... and its a shame... stupid rich white kids.
Cartoons - 9. I loved the cartoon, period... though Mush Mouth was my favorite.
Misc. - 8.3. His phrase is pretty damn famous, and there's been numerous references to the cartoon in any number of movies.
Longevity - 7.6. Its been about 20 years or so, but it may only last as long as Cosby.
Score - 8.225

I think this one's an easy pick for me: Pikachu (as in Ash's Pikachu from the cartoon)
And reading over this, I forgot to mention why it's so easy: it's one of my favorite modern franchises. Not so much Pikachu, but I love the whole Pokemon franchise which is like dork-dom with a kid's wrapper: it's an RPG engine dressed up as a kids game, an 80s cartoon made 20 years late (very formulaic: reoccuring bad guys, cheesy comic relief in an "action" cartoon, a moral each episode, etc), and they even had a trading card game made by WotC which was basically Magic:Light.

We did this over on the Video Game Character Draft thread, too. The video game did come first. However, the cartoon is as popular, if not moreso, than the video game so much of the popularity can be attributed to it.

I'd love to give more commentary, but I'm heading out to play in the snow. I was torn between two recent characters and decided to go with the one from the 80s: He-Man. I think He-Man was the second to the Transformers in the 80s and it doesn't hurt that there's a remake currently on Cartoon Network (one of the few remakes that are actually good).

Suicane75
02-08-2004, 04:29 PM
With the third pick in round #3, Suicane selects, from Family Guy, Stewie.

(Stewie takes the stage.)

I do say, It's nice to be away from the fat man and the insufferable bitch, i, i can say bitch now right? This is on cable, yes? FX? Oh, I suppose that's a step above the Oxygen Network. Well, a statement then, hmmmm. Yes, I would like to thank Suicane for picking me, I choose not to kill him......at the moment. I would also like to say to the rest of you, WHAT THE DEUCE MAN!!! Bart Simpson? He hasn't been relevant since Vanilla Ice, and by god man, he's got a vagina, I think we all know where your pleasures lay.....(Stewie is whisked off the stage)

Chris Berman: Well that was something, Dinty Moore Beef Stewie Griffin picked with the 3rd pick in the 3rd round. Mel, youre surprised he went so high arn't you?

Mel Kiper: Chris, Im surprised you arnt kicked in the nuts for that lame nickname, but yes, this is a bit of a stretch, Stewie isn't even the main character on a show that didn't last 5 seasons.

Chris Berman: But is being revived.

Mel Kiper: When I look out in this crowd and I see the Disney and the Warner Brothers contigent still to go undrafted, I shake my head at this pick, Suicanes picks have become more and more of a stretch as the draft has progressed. With that last pick, Suicane75 has put his team back in the stone age.

Chris Berman: Hold on Mel, apparently Stewie is being led back on stage, apparently he's had a change of heart and wants to say goodbye to Peter and Lois.

(Stewie is carried on stage where he takes the podium)

Yes, yes, I would like in all honesty to say one more thing from the bottom of my heart. (He hoks a giant loogie on the Griffin family and scampers away).

(Crowd Silence)

Chris Berman: Well, ummm, that is something we don't see every day, (laughing) Stewie pulls a Bill Romanowski.....we have Chris Mortensen with team Suicane75 in the war room.

Chris Mortensen: Thanks Chris, I'm here with team Suicane75 owner Suicane75 along with Homer, Beavis and Stewie. Suicane, Mel Kiper has blasted all your picks so far, how do you defend yourself?

Suicane75: Defend myself? My team is young, strong and poised for future greatness, Mel Kiper is an idiot.

Mel Kiper: Say what you will but you had Sylvester, Wile E Coyote, Jerry, Barney, a plethora of viable 3rd round picks out there and you passed them up for someone who wasn't even on the radar.

Stewie: If I could just interject for a moment, what is up with your hair man, I mean really, do you comb that thing or have it paved?

Chris Mortensen: Homer, it's been argued that you have been your shows main weakness and didn't deserve to go ahead of your son.

Homer: Hey pal, I just read the lines they give me, I've been doing this thing for 15 years, personaly I would have gone out after Mr Burns got shot, but does anyone listen to what I have to say? Nooooooo, it's always "say your lines and cash your check fat man" well now I've got a new gig and.........

Beavis: Heh heh heh, You are pretty fat, like, can you even see your wiener?

Homer: Why you little!!!!!!!!! (Homer proceeds to start choking Beavis then turns and looks at the camera) D'OH!!!!

Stewie: You know, I wouldn't mind at all if you were to kill him, he has quite a foul odor about him.

Chris Mortensen: Well, thats all from Suicane75's war room, back to you Chris.

Chris Berman: Alrighty, thanks Chris, Ardent Enthusiast is on the clock.

Both of my picks have been classic characters, so I think I need to nominate a modern character. So, with my third round pick, I select:

Eric Cartman

It's hard to pick one of the South Park boys as being more culturally relevant than others, but I think Cartman's a bit more recognizeable than the other three, save maybe Kenny. But when Kenny can just be written out of half a season, he can't be that important of a character.

Psycho Cop selects at the end of Round 2:
Mazinger Z

Psycho Cop selects at the beginning of Round 3:
Astro Boy

sterlingice is on the clock.

On a note why I chose both...

Mazinger Z was one of the very first big-robot anime that was ever shown in Japan. First airing in the early 1970's... he began the entire robot thing in Japan. The legacy of Mazinger Z still continues in the land of the rising sun, with several movies, and sequels to the original series (Great Mazinger, Mazinkaiser) AND the inclusion of Mazinger Z as one of the chief characters in the Super Robot Wars series... not to forget the tons of merchandise that this big fellow sold.

AstroBoy, on the other hand, WAS the first anime tv series in Japan, EVER. Yep, he started the entire anime revolution that we have come to experience. He was animated by Osamu Tezuka, considered by many as the Walt Disney of Japan. With over 193 black-and-white episodes, 50 color episodes, product endorsement, merchandising, etc. etc... Astroboy remains a strong part of Japanese culture, as he is still being shown on all kinds of merchandise. Astroboy returned to the air waves via a new series.

There you go. I follow Optimus Prime up with two Japanese animation heavyweights.

Positives:Another guy thats been around for a while. Hes shifty and angile, able to elude defenders. And how many cartoon characters have their own instrumental piece that they can INSTANTLY be recognized by?
Negatives:These days he doesn't have many vehicles for his notriety. Gets more face time from insolation than anything else.
Conclusion:Hes got fame, a well used product sponsorship, and his own instrumental piece, what more could you want?

oykib

I figured that I could go with a later round pick to take this next character. But with so many anime characters dropping off the board, I guess that I have to do it now.

With my third round selection I take, from Macross/Robotech:

Lynn Minmei

She was the character with the biggest following at her zenith in Japan. She made Mari Ijima (the voice actress) a star all over Asia. Minmei led to the tie-ins of voice actors and pop stars that we have today in Japan.

In America, though the level of the voice actress was much lower, it is still Minmei's pivotal role as the mercurial sometime girlfriend that drives Rick to join the RDF in order to try and impress her. She also is the single most important character to the final destruction plan of the vast Zentraedi armada.

With this pick I feel that I've cornered the market on females with the two most popular original cartoon female characters worldwide.

That was the other one I was going back and forth on. Batman kept action cartoons alive during the dark years of the early to mid 90s before we got this recent cartoon renaissance. Basically, after the Ninja Turtles in the late 80s/early 90s, and Power Rangers, a little after, had died down, everyone was pulling animation from their programming. NBC pulled the plug on their block that had been anchored by Smurfs for about a billion years, ABC was "re-engineering" their Disney and Warner Brothers based cartoons, and CBS pulled theirs which had the really long running TMNT and Garfield. Then there was Fox's kids block, the fledgling network the went on to have some now-classic cartoons on it (X-Men, Spiderman, The Tick) but the new superhero craze was ushered in by the success of Batman: TAS. Well, the story isn't quite so cut and dry, syndication means a lot of stuff was on a lot of stations and Batman didn't entirely bring back superhero cartoons as it did ride the coattails of the movies and people's like of superheroes coming from TMNT but you get the idea.

I suppose there's some irony in that it was then scarfed up by WB to anchor their block in the late 90s which had been anchored by shows like Animaniacs and Tiny Toons before eventually discovering a small electric rat from Japan and changing everything. Then WB proceeded to crush Fox, force Saban (of Power Rangers fame) out of the position of power he'd been in for 10 years, and Fox kids block is just now starting to make a bit of a comeback. Then again, there's a ton of competition from the Nickelodeon block on ABC and increased pressure from places like Cartoon Network but that's another story for another day.

I have Daffy Duck, Winnie the Pooh, Felix the Cat and SpongeBob SquarePants. I think I'll need to grab a bad ass with my next pick. Anyway...

I think I'll line up Daffy at QB. Sure, he's not quite the athlete Bugs is, but he should still be a top 5 QB.

Winnie the Pooh will be my nose tackle. He's a bear for Pete's sake. Plus, he'll have some extra motivation from his two favorite things, Honey and Honies.

Felix the Cat is the most versatile player selected. With his magic bag of tricks, he can play anywhere. Still, I think I'll line him up as my shut down corner.

Anyone who saw the episode where Sponge was pounded on over and over again by a big bully fish knows that he feels nothing and take an unlimited amount of punishment. He will line up as my RB. The tacklers with bounce right off him, literally.

Needs: I still need to grab a big time playmaker at LB and someone who can get to the quarterback from the end. With Pooh in the middle, any Middle Linebacker I pick up should be able to roam free.

Buzz Lightyear

I was gonna take someone else here before I checked the list again and saw that Buzz was still on the board.

> The most popular CG animated character ever
> A merchandising powerhouse (toys, games, posters, etc.) worldwide
> Two #1 box office blockbusters and a third on the way
> A cartoon
> The most popular character from the first truly successful CG film or TV series

Solid pick, although I personally find Woody to be the better character though..

A lot of people like Woody. But Buzz is the bigger draw. Woody never got his own cartoon. Parents never lined up to kill each other to pick up a Woody at Christmas, either.
