You must consider Star Wars including the prequels and Star Trek including all of the spinoffs. Which is the better series?

Jar Jar throws it in favor of Star Trek in my book.

The Stars Wars prequels decided it for me (and I actually own the DVD's for both of those garbage movies).

Star Trek has more material to work off of. I generally like the Star Wars books over the Star Trek books, but with so many episodes of the TV series, and only 5 Star Wars movies (to Star Treks' 9) kind of make it a horde vs. a small regiment.

Was tough deciding on which one sucked less. I voted for Star Wars in the end.

Upon further reflection, I want to withdraw my vote because there was no third joke/trout option for me to choose.

I dunno... nothing in the Star Trek universe could stand up to the Death Star, in my opinion.

Scottie: Aye, sir.

Even with the last two crappy movies... Star wars still wins pretty easily.

So what are you supposed to vote for if you've never seen a Star Wars movie or a Star Trek episode?

(And should the fact that my boyfriend has dozens of DS9 tapes in our apartment sway my vote?)

Edit -- seriously, I clicked on the poll, now I'm bummed I can't vote!

You should still be able to vote. I think...

I like 'em both. When I was 7 I saw Star Wars when it came out and it was freakin' awesome. However, I always like Star Trek and when I saw STII The Wrath of Khan that kicked ass too.

Star Wars was at one point not exclusively for nerds so it gets the nod.

I meant I clicked on a thread with a poll so I still feel like voting, even though I'm totally unqualified. Eh, I'll vote anyway. Star Trek seems like it's for math geeks (like me). Star Wars seems like it's for regular geeks.

Nope... but I saw an interview on TV the other day with Carrie Fisher... and it about ruined that childhood fantasy for me. Has anyone else here seen her lately? http://dynamic2.gamespy.com/%7Efof/forums/images/smilies/eek.gif

Those are immediately disqualified on the grounds that TNG had GUYS WEARING MINISKIRTS in the pilot episode. WTF were they thinking?

Why is Star Wars better? It all made sense to everybody.

The Death Star. The damned thing blew up planets. The name fits.

When Han Solo and the Falcon where getting sucked into the Death Star, the bad guys were using their "tractor beam". I understand that.

Lightsabers are sabers made of light. Blaster Pistols were pistols that shot blasts of lazers. It's just perfect for us dumb guys.

In Star Trek, The Death Star would have been named the Iranium Titanoid Planer Sphere Eradicator. A lightsaber would have been a EG-422 Echo-radiator Beamanoid or some shit. I don't I have the time or the inclination to figure out what the hell they are talking about in Star Trek. It's for geeks who don't have jobs, apparently.

However, having said all that, Jar Jar almost made me vote for Star Trek. :D

What's so complicated about photon torpedos, phasers, shields, warp drive, tractor beam? All Star Trek phrases.

I can see where it gets a little confusing at times, especially when sub-space fields or tachyons are mentioned. Tachyons are the end of me. I have no idea what they are or what they do, but they seem to be able to do whatever you need when you need it.

I love both series (well, except for the new SW movies) but I grew up watching ST:TNG so Star Trek wins due to the nostalgia factor, I guess.

I love both - Star Trek imho has better quality across the board (ignoring the original Shatner series which had some very tacky episodes) .... BUT I absolutely loved the original star wars series and the books which continued it onward (much better than the prequels imho) so that gets the tip for me.

I agree, I think the Thrawn series would have made a great series of movies after Return of the Jedi.

Regarding the original series of Star Trek, I tend to throw the 3rd season away. They were on extreme budget cuts and basically had no writers. That season had Spock's Brain and Abraham Lincoln in space. :D But the first two seasons were greatness.

I think it was much harder to have a television series be successful for so long as the Trek series, and actualy have it be very good quality television as well. Star Wars in undoubtedly great, but it's only 5-6 hours worth of film. Star Trek crushes Star Wars in this respect. This also allowed you to get attached to characters much more, and you would see pretty much every side to every character as well. Unlike the Star Wars movies where you are limited to what was filmed 20-30 years ago.

Wasn't the original Star Trek only on for like 3 seasons or something?

The original Star Trek series was classic; The first two Star Wars movies (SW and ESB) were classics; Star Trek the Next Generation was decent; ST movies 2, 4, 6, & 8 were decent; Return of the Jedi was decent...Most of the novelizations from both franchises are readable.

...Everything else involving the two franchises has blown chunks. I might have given a slight edge to SW (quality over quantity), but the last two installments of the movie series have soured me completely on Star Wars (not to mention Lucas' idiotic "Special Edition" versions of the original triology)...so Trek gets my nod for now.

Star Trek is boring, never enough action and adventure as Star Wars. Plus Star Trek animation sucks compared to Star Wars. I agree that the last 2 star wars movies have sucked, but they still had that hot Natalie Portman chick.
