I know there are a couple threads already (GO GO RUTGERS) but I though a central thread for this weekend's game might be a good idea.

My only contribution is: TCU 7 - OU 0

Go Horny Frogs!

TCU 10 - OU 0

Paul Thompson will need to learn how to pass if the Sooners want to do anything this year. His stats aren't horrible, but that's because the receivers have made good adjustments on the completions so far.

Isn't it fun when for a fleeting second, we think it's possible for a top-ten power to lose a home game to a mid-major? We get about one of these every week every September.

It really is a lot of fun. Now I'm sure the Oklahoma machine will wake up and absolutely steam-roll them.

We get about one of these every week every September.I love those (this) type of game. That is until you see the turning point occur...i.e. TCU getting in position for a half ending field goal only to have the shotgun snap sail over the QB's head. OU will either get a chance for a hail mary or a field goal of their own now.

I'm in big 10 country so I dont get that game on tv, but what happened to Adrian Peterson? He seriously has 9 carries for 9 yards?

Airhog
09-03-2005, 12:56 PM
If Bomar continues to play well, is there a chance that he is more likely to become the starter at OU?

Sure, you can practice all you want, and scrimmage, but you just don't know how well your new QB is gonna do until he faces real gameday pressure. Thompson just hasn't really impressed me the first half. Bomar came out with fire in his eyes to perform, and it will be interesting to see if he plays well in the second half...

I know there are a lot of Texas fans around here- so any thoughts on the UL Lafayette - Texas game? Basically the way I see it, we (UL-Laf) will get kicked horribly, but wouldn't it be nice if the game was close?

TroyF
09-03-2005, 12:58 PM
TCU should be up by at least 17 now.

The upstart team knocking off a top ten power happens at least once every week in September. But this is one of those games where you are REALLY starting to question if the team at home is really a top 10 team.

OU hasn't just looked sluggish or disinterested. They look horrible. The offensive line is pathetic, the QB's have been poor (though Bomar has looked better than Thompson), and the secondary just looks lost.

This may be the year Texas knocks them off. . .

OU has came out and played very vanilla football so far. It understandable though with a QB that hasnt started. Of course TCU has loaded the box with a 4-2-5 defense, which they are playing like a 4-4. Its hard to run with 9 guys in the box, and until OU starts hitting the deep ball, and spreads this defense out, Peterson just isn't going to get it done.

OU came out passing and when TCU figured out that Thompson was no threat through the air, they loaded up to stop Peterson. It's worked so far.

Yeah, tough day so far in Oklahoma. I know these guys are all young, but somebody has to step up. I disagree with TroyF in a sense. They don't look good, but I think it is because they look sluggish and disinterested.

All the question marks - QB, O-line, WR, pass rush, secondary - can be answered in the negative right now. And if that doesn't change, it's going to be a long year in Norman.

I sure hope cthomer's right because I'm desperately waiting for someone to wake up.

VPI97
09-03-2005, 01:02 PM
TCU should be up by at least 17 now. Yep...not getting another first half score is going to bite them later on when OU's depth starts to make a difference. The Sooners will likely end up putting at least 20 on the board, so that mean the Frogs need a minimum of two more scores to stay in the game.

Cuckoo
09-03-2005, 01:03 PM
Maybe it's because of mediocre pass rush and secondary play from Oklahoma, but I'm impressed with TCU's QB. He makes good decisions, doesn't hold the ball too long, and is generally accurate.

I don't know much about TCU, but he looks solid.

Edit: Removed DOLA as VPI squeezed in there.

Yeah, you ain't kidding! OU looks like crap against TCU, I can't imagine them knocking off Texas, unless they turn it on in the 2nd half and just 'wake up' and play like they were expected to do.

The way they are playing today, they easily could end the season unranked!

TroyF

I'll always give the edge to OU until Texas beats them. No matter how horrible OU looks and how great Texas looks.

That said, I'm not impressed at all with OU right now. They need to get something going here and quick.

In other games, Wisconsin/Bowling Green is just plain nuts to watch and now I can say that I've seen a FB hurdle a defender and run 80 yards for a TD. (Rutgers)

It's also odd to see Ohio State in a four WR set. Gotta love opening day. :)

CU/CSU in a little over an hour.

TroyF
09-03-2005, 01:21 PM
Quick dola, OU has come out fired up and is running the ball down TCU's throats now.

Here is the turning point. Drives like this are where upsets are made and broken. Another OU turnover/missed field goal/4th down miss will put OU in big trouble. A TD scamper by AP and they are the ones in deep.

edit: No sooner do I hit the submit button than AP is running free into the end zone. An OU defense three and out stop and I may start concerning myself more with that wild Wisconsin/Bowling Green game.

One of the gutsier calls I've seen in awhile. Wisconsin takes a 42-35 lead to start the second half. Bowling Green gets stuffed and face a 4th and 8 from the 22. They call a fake punt and convert it.

Impressive. Not so impressive. . . they get sacked three straight times and are forced to punt on a 4th and 20+ after the fake punt. Ouch.

Tennessee hangs on to win 17-10.
Defended the 4th down try by UAB tipping away a pass into the end zone, faced 3rd & long themselves but put it away with a 50 yd Claussen pass when the UAB DB fell down (injuring himself in the process, enough to be taken off on the little handcart thing)

The starters were all out of the game midway through the second after Iowa took a 35-0 lead. 49-0 at the half and Ball St had something like 15 yards total offense. Western Kentucky Hilltoppers crush W. Virginia Tech Golden Bears 63-3. :)

My best friends nephew (Brandon Fitzgerald) is a fullback for the Hilltoppers so I've been following them this year. Plus the smaller colleges get no love! Brandon had 6 carries for 63 yards and 1 TD.

They play Auburn on the 24th and I am sure Auburn will bury them.

CU is the craziest team I've ever seen. They dominate the second half, forcing turnover after turnover and then take a 7 point lead. To force the turnovers they blitzed the hell out of Holland. So what do they then do? Rush 4 and drop 7 on EVERY play while CSU walks down the field and ties the game.

Then, CSU, when they probably should have backed off a bit, blitz SEVEN guys on the first CU play allowing CU to complete the pass to the CSU 40.

And if you couldn't tell by the kick, the game was over the second CU crossed the 50. Mason Crosby is the best college kicker I've ever seen. Not only does he have absolutely psychotic range, he's deadly accurate. That 47 yarder would have been good from 65 with ease and it was dead on accurate.

The only other good thing about the game was that last run by Hugh Charles. He put on a couple of great moves on that run.

Well, we'll get to enjoy this for a week. Should win again next week. Then we'll lose by about 85 at Miami. I just hope Crosby gets a shot at a 70 yarder this year. My guess is he hits it.

That's not good for a team heavily favored to win the title. They'll probably make the adjustments and beat them by 50, but that won't work against a better team. I think in most cases you are better off giving up a 70 yard bomb as opposed to a 10 minute drive that ends up in a FG. In the fourth quarter against a good team, those long drives will kill you.

First game and all, so we'll see what happens. . .

It all depends on the area of the country you are in. Down south? It's all college football. They talk about it 365 days a year.

Where I am in Denver? It's all about the pro sports. Even with the exciting Buffs/Rams game this weekend, I can promise you the main talk on the radio on Monday will center around the Broncos/Dolphins game coming up next week.

I believe the rating for NFL games are usualy higher than a typical college game in most spots. For me it's probably 60/40 for the NFL. College has better atmosphere, but the NFL has the worlds best players playing at the peak of their careers.

I have my doubts. This is the first step for them. The way to become a part of the higher up programs is to play them. Learn from them. Get better.

With their facilities, Boise State isn't going to go away anytime soon. They'll continue to improve. There is no natural order.

Five years ago, USC was in a world of hurt. Now they have a dynasty brewing. National powers rise and fall and some young upstarts come up and push their way in to move in. That's the natural order of things Skydog, the only question is "which" upstart will fight their way in. :) :)

Actually. . . they probably will be. Boise isn't trying to get the kids that Georgia or SEC schools get. Their goal is to get the second tier guys who have the potential to surprise.

National TV helps in that area. It builds awareness. Now, if they fall apart the rest of the year and lose 4 more games, all bets are off. But if they were to come back from this to finish up at 10-2 and head to a bowl game, this will just be a blip in the memory bank.

Didn't the telecast say that Boise was building a ten million dollar indoor practice facility/gym? That'll go a long ways to getting even better players. I'm not saying Boise will be the team that turns into a ten year national power. But someone will. Just a matter of who. . .

Shit, HS football in the South is MUCH bigger than college football in the Northeast (New England and New York). The only enclave of college football (and relatively minor at that) in that area is Central New York where I grew up and about a 9 block area in Boston around BC. Once you get down in Pennsylvania, both HS and college football becomes bigger. New Jersey just have 7, count 'em 7, college football fanatics in the whole state. :)

A newspaper columnist the next day wrote that CU had a long way to go before they'd be on the same level as Baylor.

Well, two national title games later (along with a BCS trip) and we reached that level. Sad thing is we are now spiraling back toward them.

Media coverage is a problem. Hawaii gets no coverage because their home games start at midnight eastern, so no one on the east is paying attention/awake. Recruits would want some notoreity. The run and shoot does not attract QBs wanting a 'pro' offense. It doesn't attract RBs because its pass oriented. WRs seem to do well as they learn to run a lot of routes, Ashlie Lelie and Chad Owens (I think the Jags kept him on the roster) are two NFLers that were produced in UH.

Hawaii does not get any big recruits. Any big recruits usually get picked up by PAC-10 schools. Maybe its academics, Hawaii is in the Top 25 for graduation rates (over 70%).

Man, Wyoming got spanked.

But there was one play in the first quarter that set the whole momentum for the game.

We were down about the 35 or 40 in Florida's territory. 4th and 1. Corey hands off to that fucking idiot freshman tailback who has all the open field room he needs to get the ball and more. What does he do?

He fumbles the damn thing.

A short trip later, Leak hits his first of 3 TD passes of the day and from there the momentum was all Gators.

The Cowboys' O-line was god awful in general too.

I hope we get our better backs in the lineup again soon from injury. That freshman kid was horrible. I also don't think they got Bouknight involved enough in the offense.

Corey still looks pretty weak as a passing QB, though he showed some decent scrambling moves.

Auburn seems to show sparks of offensive prowess, but then mucks it all up. If they can show some consistency in that, they can win this game easily. Unfortunetly when they start to move, they start bogging down.

Oh, and I agree with TroyF. It doesn't matter that Boise got smoked, its national TV coverage, playing against a team that looks like it'll finish in the Top 5 (at least from today). If they finish 10-2 or even 9-3, it'll do nothing but help them. People realize they aren't with the big guys yet, but they are one of the best of the 2nd tier.

He was a defender at that point (after the interception), he was turning toward the LB, the DL simply blocked him.

And how blind are the guys in the booth to not figure out that the 15 yds on Auburn was a facemask when LB Hall was tackled. Even without the ref mic I managed to figure out what was going on there.

Also some questions about whether the Tech offense will be consistent enough to keep the defense off the field enough to be effective for four quarters at the pace they play.

Also some questions about whether the Tech offense will be consistent enough to keep the defense off the field enough to be effective for four quarters at the pace they play.

Maybe the best part of the whole night was the good news at halftime for Eric Henderson & the way he got to put the finishing touch on the ballgame.
Can't say I disagree with anything you wrote here (or in the thread). UNC becomes a huge test next week. Even though Tech SHOULD win, it's the kind of game Gailey has made a habit of not showing up for during his tenure.

For now, though, I'm giddy.

And the thing that I noticed is that ND has the ''Killer Instinct (in this game at least),'' Instead of going for 3 and out when ahead.
I guess when the guy with a fist full of Super Bowl rings talks, college players listen better

Damn BYU...Damn them to hell.....

You know...I think I figured out what it is...I root for teams named after wild cats....The Cougars, The Lions, and The Tigers.....damn, I think I might have to change it up, and go for Offensive Indian Named teams....but that would mean me moving to the Redskins (HELL NO!)

Anyways, BYU has to attack Vertical more, their offense was rocking, just not rocking enough..

BC Bent but did not Break.

Really good win to start the year.

I'm looking forward to the Army and FSU games.

BYU was doing pretty good throwing the underneath stuff, and some of the receivers did a good job picking up YAC. But man, they tried going deep several times and the receivers were just overthrown plain and simple.

Also, BYU seemed to just stall when they got in BC's red zone. They need a big back who can punch it in when they get close.

Looks to be a slug fest going into the second half. Will be switching between this and the UK vs. UK game (which will probably be a shootout).

I wasn't around a computer yesterday to post, but I did watch most of the TCU-Oklahoma game. I know you shouldn't judge a team by one game, but it is hard to see Oklahoma winning more than 6 games this year. Maybe Stoops can pull a rabbit out of his hat, and one game is far from a season, but I just wouldn't be shocked at this point.

BTW, they may only win 6, but they still might beat Texas. In rivalry games you "throw out" the book. But there is no way they "should" beat Texas this year.

It's really, really hard to believe that Syracuse doesn't have a more competent QB on their roster than that clown Patterson. He makes John Stocco look like Tom Brady.

I'm really pleased with WVU's game today.

Yes, they turned the ball over 5 times. But, the defense was very strong. The quarterbacks and receivers, considered the biggest question marks on the team, outperformed my expectations. And, the playcalling was really good, which is not always a given for us.

This game and a tune up next week against Wofford should give our QBs a little experience and confidence without, hopefully, costing us any Ws.

He just stunk up the place. I cant believe he didnt spike the ball when they got the 1st down.

Apart from the QB position, it seems to me that Kentucky has better athletes than Louisville.

Great comeback by Kentucky, until the QB let the ball go at the end. I think Kentucky has potential to develop into a good program in the next few years. A young team with good athletes.

Man, it is hard to imagine a better Sat'd' afternoon.

Auburn loses.
UT looks bad.
USC's run defense is porous.
The Dawgs win big.
DJ silences the doubters emphatically.
I won't have to hear the words "Boise State" and "BCS" in the same sentence this year.
Tucker's latest stud Asher Allen announces his commitment to UGA.
I even saw the lights of the Goodyear Blimp
And it read "SkyDog's a pimp."
Today I didn't even have to use my AK
I gotta say it was a good day.

Hmm, who matches up with Micheal Bush or Kolby smith from kentucky.. :P

In a rivalry game.. most things go out the window anyway :)

Another ''Should have won, but didn't'' game for Willingham. He is just too conservative
in the second half of play.

I don't think "conservative" play was the problem here - the offensive play calling really wasn't much different from early in the game vs. after the 17-6 lead - lot's of Louis Ranking running (who had 100+ yards), lots of Isaiah Stanback taking what the defense gave him.

The blame on this one lies primarily with the defense - the Huskies just couldn't stop Air Force enough on 3rd and 4th downs, and giving up the 84 yard bomb after taking the 17-6 lead then having Air Force start on their 1 yard line was a killer. Washington was very thin in the corner back department, and losing one of our starters (as well as our starting strong safety and left tackle) were real tough blows for this team with so little depth to overcome.

If you had told me before the game that Washington would have a 100-yard rusher, commit no turnovers and QB Stanback would go 19-27 for 242 yards I'd have figured we'd win going away. Our defense isn't as good as we'd hoped. Could be another long season...

That Kentucky-Louisville game was the best one I've seen so far this weekend. Much better than the Syracuse-West Virginia snoozefest. I bleed Kentucky blue, but I like the Cardinals too since I was born in Louisville. I don't think Louisville will be as good as advertised, and I think the Cats might suprise a few SEC teams this season.

Their starting QB got murdered in the first quarter. Ankle or knee injury, not sure which, but it didn't look pretty.

The first QB who started the game broke his ankle on the first series of the game. The announcers had said the kid was a kicker the last 2 years but earned the starting qb role this year. Must be downright depressing for him.

The UK coaches couldn't believe it, the players couldn't believe it, and the crowd definitely couldn't believe it. Looking at the replay it was clearly a fumble. However, just after the fumble Woodson is laying halfway out of bounds with the ball under him. As I understand it that means the play should have been dead with Kentucky's possession at the 2 yard line.
