No, it's not unexpected, but I wonder how many teams he'll play for this year? Also, Antwon Smith couldn't make the cut in Houston.

Raiders | J. George could be cut and then possibly re-signed
Sat, 2 Sep 2006 06:47:00 -0700
John Clayton, of ESPN, reports the Oakland Raiders could cut QB Jeff George and then possibly re-sign after Week 1 when his salary would not be guaranteed for the whole season. The team sees that George still has a very strong arm.

Drew Henson is expected to be cut by the Cowboys today. Parcells told the press a couple weeks ago that he would no longer be on the roster when the final 53 would be announced. Makes me wonder why though since he was very impressive over in NFLE. I guess he didn't make the process that Parcells thought he should have made while over there.
Anyways, does anyone know a good site where I can see up-to-date transactions? Most of the site I know are not doing a very good job of show who is being cut.

He just wasn't making it here. Romo and Bledsoe were so far above him in terms of progress that he is expendable. I too was suprised to see how slowly he was coming along, but there have been a number of articles about it here in Dallas.

Pats cut LBs Chad Brown and Monty Biesel, despite losing LB Barry Gardner for the season. They also traded RB Patrick Cobb to the Steelers...which can't be good news for Duce Staley. And they cut their 3rd QB, so I assume they'll be picking someone else up soon. Henson maybe? KC's Printers?

Staley still will make the team unfortunately. :(
The Steelers draft was pretty lousy this year, in regards to who they will end up keeping. They've cut basically their whole 2nd day of picks, and will only go into the season with 2 QB's. I absolutely hate that.

I still dont think Willie Parker can carry the load the entire season. Im hoping staley does make it, just in case.

Not at all. Not at all... He never really recovered from that second collar bone break. He just hasn't been the same after it at all. He shows little interest in the game. Marinelli didn't want him.
It's entirely possible that, but for salary cap implications, the Lions would have cut bait on Mike Williams as well. As it stands now Williams is on the roster, but I wouldn't be suprised if he was inactive for the first game of the season.

Yeah, Haynes should get a lot of work. Supposedly Cobbs or Staley will be activated depending on the matchup.

To back up stevew here, I heard on the radio this morning that Bill Cowher has announced that Duce Staley will make the team. I don't really follow the Steelers that closely, so I don't know what effect that'll have on the roster, but it's pretty obvious that Parker and Haynes are the top guys. Unless one of them gets injured, or maybe if Haynes is really ineffective this year, Cobbs and Staley won't get much playing time.

I suppose. I just figure that, if Parker struggles, he'll become the #2, so Cobbs and Staley still wouldn't really play. If Haynes struggles, he becomes the #3, and then one of the other guys would get a chance. Parker is probably more likely to lose his job, but I'm not sure that that would give Cobbs or Staley a chance to get significant playing time.

Is it absolutely ridicuolus that I think the 49ers might be well served taking a flyer on Charles Rogers and/or Mike Williams if the Lions are disinterested in him from now on?
I don't know if that says more about the crappiness of my team, or my lack of knowledge of whether or not either of these guys can be competent WRs in the NFL.

No. I'd think the same if he wasn't cut by the Lions. Rogers has a lot of talent and showed he could play in this league in his first few starts prior to his first collar bone injury. If he was some how able to regain that edge and a light bulb went on in his head, he could still have some value in this league. The odds of this happening are slight, but worth taking a chance if a team can afford to.

Fred Matua cut by the Lions after leaving USC a year early to enter the draft. Thought it was a bad decision at the time, now his career is probably done. Such a waste.
Omar Jacobs cut by the Steelers, are they allowed to resign him to the practice squad now? Many people thought he would be a big draft sleeper IIRC.

Jacobs can go on the practice squad if he is not claimed by anyone. Cutting him to keep one of Cowher's "special teams aces" is a horrible move.

Umm, they just gave him a big contract, and they hate his backups. He's the guy.
Haynes is not a Bettis type, he has benn their third down back for years and is again this year.
Dallas cut their starter at right tackle last season (Petiti), a guy they gave a $1M bonus to be a backup LB/ST guy, and their 4th/6th round picks.

Not really surprised at all about Green or actually even Boiman. Green didn't show much in the return game (the reason he was drafted), and Boiman fell into a numbers game where they had bigger needs at other spots.
Cutting Pettiti surprises me, though. I suspected they wouldn't keep 5 tackles, but you'd think he would have had at least a little value after the steady improvement he had made over the past year or so.

I don't think Parker is going to lose his job because they love the guys behind him, I think he will turn out to be a very pedestrian starting running back.

I don't think you can say Boiman fell into a numbers' game since Dallas kept 9 LB's. I suppose Parcells felt the other rookie FA's and younger players that made the team had a bigger upside.

He did do some beautiful tip-toeing around the line. Instead of actually hitting the hole. Oh, and when he didn't act like a ballet dancer, he would just dive at the line.

I would have liked ot have him on the team. I know he is a troublemaker kid, but he has worked so hard to make the team. He has done great in the preseason, specially in the last game where he caught a pass for TD, returned kicks a few times and also threw a few passes as QB. I like those kind of multi-tool players, he has played a nice as WR even being a QB in college. I hope nobody will claim him and we can put him in our practice squad.

Pretty much. I think they get paid a very small amount while in camp. Couple thousand or something like that, but I could be wrong.
No offense, Icy, but for all the trouble that kid causes/got into and continues to get breaks because he's got some talent and he's Mike's younger brother...I'm glad to see him fail.
I saw the highlights of that game you mentioned, and I remember telling people here in our compound that it was too bad. I wanted to see him fail.
I've never really thought that about a player that I can think of...a player that I want to see fail. Let me think about it...maybe Chris Leak, but that's only because he shunned UT.

I understand your point, but i think it could have been great to rehabilitate a kid with bad past and behavior. For what has been said, his behavior in the Fins has been nice since they gave him a chance, being praised by team mates and by Saban. Of course if he keeps trying to destroy his life after this chance, he deserves anything bad that happens to him.

I'm ok with that. It's an old joke, but a good one. I still liked the guy even though that whole thing is a little creepy/odd. I hope he does well, and stays injury free, wherever he goes next.
I guess now I can get into full Samkon Gado mode again like the end of last year. That is when Ahman Green isn't on the field (and isn't fumbling).
Wow, for some reason this just dawned on me. Two rookie guards and a new starting center for the Packers this year pretty much means disaster. But I will say right now that if Favre gets close to the INT number he had last year, and Green stays healthy enough to keep fumbling the ball all year, the Packers are the early favorite to lead the NFL in turnovers this season. Favre will have as much pressure in his face this year as he did last year, and Green will have tacklers all over him. I think I may be glad I won't have Sunday Ticket this season.

Mike Sando @ Seahawks Insider (http://blogs.thenewstribune.com/seahawks/) has a nice spreadsheet (http://blogs.thenewstribune.com/media/09_03_2006_Hawks_Roster_01.xls) for the Seahawks roster. It's a 29 category monster with a boatload of info.
I was glad to see them cut Peter Warrick because his attitude during camp was pretty bad. He was on local radio saying that he wanted out of Seattle anyway. I thought RB Marquis Weeks and WR Ben Obomanu had a decent shot at making the team but they were cut. Happy to see Maurice Mann make the roster at WR, he is going to turn into something special.
Now if we could just make a deal with the patriots to get Deion Branch...

I think the Pats got a steal today by picking up Doug Gabriel from the Raiders today. He is ready for a breakout year this year, and will put up some good numbers.

I wouldn't be at all surprised to see Ron Dayne end up in Houston. He knows Kubiak's play book and they need a RB...
Pay the man.

<!-- begin text11 div --><!-- begin leftcol --> <!-- template inline --> The Houston Texans (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/clubhouse?team=hou) filled their need for a veteran tailback on Sunday evening, reaching agreement with six-year veteran Ron Dayne (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=5040), who was released by the Denver Broncos (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/clubhouse?team=den) one day earlier. Financial details of the one-year deal were not yet available, but the contract is likely for the minimum base salary.

And since the Texans have installed an offense similar to the Broncos' design, Dayne will not need a learning period before he can contribute.
Before the agreement with Dayne, who is to arrive in Houston on Sunday night, the Texans had just two tailbacks on the roster, rookie Wali Lundy (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=7919) and second-year veteran Vernand Morency (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=7249), after waiving rookie Chris Taylor earlier in the day. Lundy will start Sunday's season opener and, even with the addition of Dayne, it's likely that Morency will remain the top backup for now.
Houston was forced to place starter Domanick Davis (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=6437), the leading rusher in franchise history, on injured reserve Saturday because of lingering swelling in his left knee. Davis had missed all but the first few days of training camp and had not appeared in any preseason games.
Dayne, 28, was projected at one point this spring, after the Broncos released Mike Anderson (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=5218), as the starter in Denver. In camp, however, he quickly fell behind younger tailbacks Mike Bell (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=8008), Tatum Bell (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=6800) and Cedric Cobbs (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=6887), got just five carries in preseason play, and was then released when the Broncos reduced their roster to the regular season limit of 53 players.
The former University of Wisconsin star, and Heisman Trophy winner in 1999, was the first-round pick of the New York Giants (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/clubhouse?team=nyg) in the 2000 draft. He started 11 games in his first two seasons with the Giants, and he averaged 730 rushing yards in 2000-2001, but has not rushed for more than 428 yards in a season since then. In 2005, his lone Denver season, Dayne rushed for 270 yards and one touchdown on 53 carries. Over the past three seasons, Dayne has logged only 105 carries and managed just 449 yards.
But the loss of Davis for the season left Houston without a proven back and, in a pinch, Kubiak turned to a player with whom he is familiar.
For his career, Dayne has rushed for 2,337 yards and 17 touchdowns on 638 carries. He also has 21 catches for 151 yards and no touchdowns. Dayne has appeared in 72 games, 14 as a starter.

[Sun-Sentinel (http://www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/football/pro/dolphins/sfl-0903suggs,0,2499934.story?coll=sfla-dolphins-front)] The Dolphins acquired running back Lee Suggs off waivers Sunday.
Suggs was waived by Cleveland on Saturday after three injury-plagued seasons. Suggs, who finished the 2004 season with three consecutive 100-yard rushing performances, is expected to compete with Travis Minor to serve as starter Ronnie Brown's backup with Sammy Morris out for the next four games following a failed test under the NFL's steroid policy.

Wow great football day for me. My favourite team picks up a back I like and Dayne gets another chance.
Now if Bouknight gets signed somewhere or makes the Panther's practice squad, it'll be a perfect football day. :D

not a cut exactly... but i just want to put in my word on the Jets QB situation.
They had 4 QBs going into camp:
Chad Pennington
Patrick Ramsey
Brooks Bollinger
Kellen Clemens
Now it was clearly obvious to me that Clemens would stay as he was a high draft pick, and Ramsey and Pennington would stay because one would win the starting job and one would be the #2. So it was clear from day 1 that Bollinger would be the guy to go unless they decided to keep 4 QBs (quite rare in the NFL).
I'm at least happy they got something in return for him, but i still think it was the wrong move. Historically, you never really keep the loser of a QB competition around. I predict that either Ramsey or Pennington will not be on the 2007 roster. So my gut feeling is that they'll be looking for a 3rd QB next year.
I personally think Bollinger can be a solid #2, as he's always looked good to me when given time to throw. He had a solid game against the Dolphins last year. Come next year i think we're going to wish we'd just kept him around and going with a trio of Clemens, Bollinger, and whoever finishes this year as starter. Seeing how this should be a down year, i feel they really should have kept 4 QBs for the year, to really come away with a solid 1-2-3 for next year.

Also not a cut but Foley is done for the season. I may be reading too much into it but I think AJ Smith is talking about more than gunshot wounds when he talks about "recovery"

The Chargers officially ended the season for starting outside linebacker Steve Foley by placing him on the non-football injury list Monday, a day after he was shot near his San Diego home by an off-duty police officer.
By going on the non-football injury list, Foley will not be able to collect his $1.65 million salary this season, which consists of a $775,000 base and an $875,000 roster bonus. Players placed on the non-football injury list usually don't collect their salary because the injury isn't related to the football field.
This was a particularly tough decision for Chargers general manager A.J. Smith, who signed Foley in 2004 in what was the start of building one of the NFL's top and most feared 3-4 defenses. Foley, who turns 31 next Monday, has 29 starts as a Charger and is considered one of the leaders on the team.
Smith issued a brief statement Monday afternoon saying, "Steve's health needs to be his number one priority. Football is secondary now. Steve needs to focus on his recovery."
Foley remained hospitalized in stable condition Monday, according to his agent, David Levine, The Associated Press reported.
The Chargers general manager has been gathering medical information for the past 24 hours to determine Foley's status for the season.
Though the injuries weren't considered life threatening, Smith had to determine Foley's ability to play this season. He decided Monday afternoon that the season was over for a Chargers linebacker who had 14 sacks over the past two seasons.
"It's a personal matter," Smith told ESPN.com. "This is a personal matter for Steve Foley, his family and his attorney. They are handling the matter. They are the first ones who deal with us."
It has been Smith's policy on non-football matters to let the agent and attorney handle the initial work and then offer the organization assistance.
"If it is an off-the-field matter this is how we deal with it," Smith said. "This has been consistent with us. If it is an on-the-field matter in a game or a practice, then we are the front-runners."
At 3:30 a.m. Sunday morning, Foley's vehicle was ordered to pull aside by an off-duty policeman who claimed Foley was weaving through traffic at speeds up to 90 miles per hour. After a brief pursuit, Foley stopped and got out of his car, approaching the officer.
According to the police reports, the officer pulled out a gun and ordered Foley to stop. Foley then got back in his car and drove toward his home. After getting out of the car again, Foley moved toward the officer. Warning shots were fired by the off-duty officer. Two shots were fired at Foley's vehicle when a female companion reportedly revved the engine and drove toward the officer. After Foley reached into his pants with his right hand, the officer fired at Foley.
For the Chargers, the loss of Foley for the year is a major setback, but the team will have to rely on a deep corps of linebackers to get through the season without him.
"Steve is an intregal part of our defense, and of course it hurts," Smith said. "But you don't moan and grown and complain about it. This is a tough world we live in and sometimes life delivers a blow and knocks you down. So what are you going to do about it. You get up and regroup and get after it again. And that's what we will do."
The Chargers will probably give Shaun Phillips the starting job on the other side of Shawne Merriman because of Foley's season-ending injury.
"To be honest right now," Smith said, "At this moment, all I care about is Steve Foley's well-being."

Probably because based on the stories I'm hearing, his "recovery" will include recovering from 4-8 years in the gray bar hotel. Once he's out of the hospital, he's going to prison -- not the Chargers.

There's no way an NFL team can justify keeping four quarterbacks, especially in an era when a third of the league is going to two quarterbacks. That becomes less possible when you're talking about two quarterbacks who still need reps to develop and a veteran QB who needs reps to get this feet back.
Pennington is there because he was the franchise QB before the injuries and you want to give him one more chance before you cut bait. Ramsey's there in case Pennington goes down and Clemens is there to learn. Bollinger still needs to learn too. Any development the Jets put into Bollinger would simply come at the expense of Clemens. I can see a scenario where Pennington and Ramsey are back next year. Patrick Ramsey is the next Todd Collins -- he'll never get another starting shot unless somebody gets hurt, and he's probably better off pulling down a big salary wearing a baseball cap.
We had a less drastic but similar QB situation here in KC's camp. They wanted a veteran backup (unfortunately Huard) and a developmental project. Brodie Croyle won that position handily over Casey Printers, who played his way off the team so much so that he cleared waivers and ended up on the practice squad. I'm not crazy about that, because I'm afraid that he and Croyle will split practice time and neither will amount to anything, unless they just buy Huard a sandwich every day and tell him to go play video games.
As a Missouri fan, I'm really interested in learning what motivated the Jets to put Brad Smith in at quarterback. It certainly doesn't seem likely the Jets will let him go back to QB, so maybe they were just giving him some reps so that he'll have some comfort when he goes into full Slash III mode and plays QB for a snap during the regular season. When Smith around, frankly I think the Jets are a prime candidate to go with just two quarterbacks since Smith can be an emergency QB. It probably doesn't make much sense this year since there's a question mark around Pennington and Clemens isn't ready.

Anybody heard anything on Zach Hilton? I was surprised that he was outright cut from the Saints roster, and even more surprised that nobody has picked him up as of yet (somewhat hoping the Seahawks might take a look at bringing him on in case Mili doesn't recover as quickly as they're hoping he does).
Any help is appreciated.

Hilton has skills in the recieving game(legit 6'8" with soft hands) but his blocking is poor enough to scare some teams away. I would be surprised if he isn't picked up before the weekend though.

Hilton signed with the Jets.. I was hoping he would be a big sleeper for me this year, because he definitely was impressive at the end of last year.. Maybe he can unseat Chris Baker, but they say his blocking is terrible.

Coachspeak notwithstanding, the only QB competition in Jets camp this year was for the #2, and it was heavily slanted against Bollinger. The guy's ticket was punched the minute they drafted Clemens.
As for next year's QB depth chart, I think it will look like this:
Quinn, Clemens, Pennington (kept active to mentor the two young guys).

I don't think Parker is going to lose his job because they love the guys behind him, I think he will turn out to be a very pedestrian starting running back.
Perhaps, but a great offensive line and a pedestrian running back has produced great numbers for them for a long, long time. (note I am including the Bettis years).
Besides, to remain number one against the current crew, all he has to do is be pedestrian. Noone else on their current roster can approach that level of play right now.
I actually think he'll be "above average" on his own merit and very good behind that line.

If this holds true, Steelers fans had bettter hope that he has figured out how to find the hole better when they aren't playing soft defenses. The teams that he went over 100 yards against (not to mention scoring rushing touchdowns against) were Tennessee, Houston, Cincinatti, Cleveland, and Detroit.

What is the fascination with Brooks Bollinger? From what I've seen he's small and throws puff balls out there yet he gets traded for.

Well, they still play Cincy and Cleveland twice, replace the AFC North with the AFC West, which results in a net gain in number of soft defenses.
I am not on here trying to tell you Parker is an all world back. I'm just saying he is a lock to remain the feature back in Pittsburgh. No matter how mediocre he is, he's all they got. See: Losman, J.P., Buffalo.

I wonder how this is going to play out with the Chargers placing him on the non-football injury list so they don't have to pay him. I'm guessing they did their research on this, but I'm still curious.
Was the off-duty police officer in uniform? If not, how would you respond to someone chasing you at 3:30 in the morning, ordering you to pull over, and then pulling a gun on you? Not to say Foley has no blame here, but I can imagine fleeing from someone in the early morning if I wasn't absolutely sure they were a police officer.

Well if you look at it in the strictest sense, he is physically unable to perform due to a non-football injury. I don't see any way to argue this point. I think this is the exact reason for having such a list.

While this is true, let's look at this a different way. If he had been shot during a mugging, would the Chargers refuse to pay him?

Yes, in fact they did this a few years ago with Terrence Kiel.
But, the circumstances of how the two shootings happened matter.

Terrence Kiel wasn't placed on the non-football injury list, was he? He had eight starts for the Chargers that year, so it's not the same situation.
And I agree that the circumstances behind the shootings is important, that's why I said I was wondering how it was going to play out. If it turns out that Foley was innocent of doing anything illegal (I'm not saying he is), I would hate to see the Chargers withhold his pay.

I'm not in love with him or anythign, but i think he's accurate, moderately mobile, and looks to have all the talent needed to be a solid #2. It's unlikely he'll ever be a full-time starter, but i think you can have him start a 5 game stretch and not feel your season is over.

You asked the question, "if he had been shot during a mugging, would the Chargers refuse to pay him?" I made the Kiel comparison, because he WAS shot during a mugging, and the Chargers did pay him. Thus, by their prior actions, I think the answer to your question is clear.
