Wedding Reception Music Ideas

This could go in a million different ways, but that's what I'm hoping for.

My lone goal for the wedding (besides attending) is to pick out the wedding reception music. I'm not entirely sure why my girl is allowing me to do this, but so be it. So for the past 3 months I've racked my brains, and I really haven't come up with much so far. So I'm requesting suggestions for the music.

The only thing I did for my wedding other than show up was pick the song that my wife and I danced to.

I went with Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness by the Smashing Pumpkins. It was a big hit.

I'm getting married in July. My fiance and I picked a DJ that plays music that we like, mostly R&B from the 70's - 90's and some select songs that we picked. We made sure it was music that we wanted, that people would dance to, and wouldn't offend anyone.

So, play what you like and play songs that will get people up and dancing.

My buddy and his then fiance had a whole song list scripted out for their reception. After the first 10 minutes or so, we told them, screw your list, we are playing what we want to listen to. My buddy was originally from Liverpool, UK, and a lot of his family was there. Once we started playing some Beatles, it was ONNNN!!!! One of his aunts later performed a keg stand while we played "I Saw Her Standing There". It was awesome.

Also, man, I wouldn't really stress out on this. Any DJ worth a damn should be able to help you fix up a playlist really quickly. They usually have songlists, you can veto what you don't want, and then maybe add some more of your favorites.

Find a DJ with a set list you like, figure out a half-dozen or so songs that you and she both love and would want to hear, figure out if there are any vetos (songs of ex-girlfriends, etc), and let them go. Best bets are 60s-70s-80s popular types - the songs everybody knows and will get out and dance to.

my first run through my mp3s (6500 songs cut down to 139), with about 40 cds not on the computer yet, and leaving out some songs i don't feel like fighting for or just couldn't figure out a good way to get people to dance to

It was designed, as someone mentioned, to get people from age 25-55 out on the dance floor, to make sure people could shag (Easy knows I mean the dance, you pervs), to include a good variety of music, and to be as "clean" as possible for the father of the bride's sake.
