View Full Version : You make the call: Is this still edible?

I left a piece of one of those pre-cooked salmon dinners (the kind that come in those new packages similar to tuna packages) out at room temperature for approx 30 hours. But it is in tupperware. Do you think it's still edible if I zap it in the microwave for a few minutes?

no

fish? 30 hours?

although the fact it was pre-cooked is working in your favor as far as food poisoning, there are some NASTY things you can get from bad fish

This is one of those "If you have to ask..." kind of things.

BUt (and here's where I probably come off sounding stupid) if you microwave it for several minutes, wouldn't that help kill off whatever baddies are in there?

piss on it. that will sterilize the thing.

Maybe.. maybe not. RendeR once made some soup out of leftover turkey that was a little too leftover.. boiled it quite thoroughly.. and still ended up with a nasty case of food poisoning.

Man, if you want trenchmouth, go ahead and eat it. Think of it this way, would you spend 5 bucks(the cost of a new meal) not to have flaming shits and vomit?

But if the bacteria have been producing toxins while they reproduce, then you will still consume those toxins even if you kill the bacteria.

The cost of a new meal is not worth taking the chance, IMO.

Botulism needs temperatures of 240 to 250 degrees to kill.

ServeSafe will make you never want to eat again

I'd eat it and start a dynasty thread with hourly updates. Should be great reading around 6 hours later when your bowels potentially empty...

30 hours, even I probably wouldn't do that.

You should stick it in the bottom of the trash and then pull it out this time tomorrow and take it to a truck stop off I-40 outside Texarkana and place it on a toilet seat in the restroom and then eat it off of said toilet seat using chopsticks.

Then blog about the experience!

I've reluctantly taken the board's advice and not eaten it.

To be honest, I would have eaten it if it weren't for this comment: "But if the bacteria have been producing toxins while they reproduce, then you will still consume those toxins even if you kill the bacteria." Using terminology such as 'toxins' makes for a compelling argument.

Exactly. There is no way that I would take a chance on it.

It might have been eatable, but it sure wasn't edible.

Microwave fish?

Even if it did kill the bacteria that could turn your anus into something resembling a firehose, then you have a piece of rubber...

Toss it out or put it in the fridge at work.

I mean really, there's only one way to find out whether a meal is healthy or not...

Death on a plate right there.

General rule for any kind of meat and any kind of fish: If there's ever a question, there's no question.

Ew, put it in the fridge at work? So he can eat it later, or so someone ELSE will eat it? ;)

Take what I say here with a grain of salt, I'm allergic to fish, so I don't know anything about how they keep or reheat or anything. Or even if the dish was originally warm.

My inclination is to say that if it was warm when you put in in the Tupperware, you DEFINITELY DEFINITELY DEFINITELY DEFEINITELY don't want to eat it. Trash it. Just think, there were whatever germies on it to begin with, then you sealed it in a warm environment. Um, ick!

Totally take that rotting shit to work and stick it in the fridge. A perfect present for the food-stealer.

Well I chucked it out, but the funny thing after reading the almost unanimous sentiment in this thread, is that on past occasions I've opted to eat it (salmon is my typical lunch and sometimes I skip lunch and eat it the next day).

I think I have more faith in the preserving-power of tupperware than the rest of you.

Salmon is foul anyway, so it definitely won't make it taste any worse than it already does.

Yup.

"Joe called in sick? He's in the hospital? Botulism? Well he shouldn't have taken my fucking peanut butter sandwich last week!"

On a related food note, I ate chicken & apple sausage that I accidentally left on the stove for 13 hours after cooking. I almost threw it out, but I rolled the dice... They are delicious when fried in lard and cost $7 for the pack. Much to the chagrin of some people here (like Schmidty) I am very much still alive. :D
