Didn't see a thread for this weekend yet so I thought I'd start it with this:
The Carolina Panthers have Signed Vinny Testaverde to a 1 year contract"
Some teams are grabbing for towels to throw in and they don't care how old those towels may be.
Carry on!

Well if we go 0-5, at least we could then hope to bring in the local boy- Glen Dorsey with our top 5 pick...
Oh the life of a Saints fan :(

We have no room to talk man :(
Why not? We compete week in and week out. We have enough injuries to fill a roster. We have a defense that is lucky it can put a linebacker on the field. We have an offensive coordinator who can't game plan his way out of a paper bag until we're already screwed.
Why can't we talk? We got nothing to lose.

Every time I watch Carolina, the only thing I can think is that this is the worst 3-2 team in history. That's probably hyperbole, but really, they could easily be 0-5.
Wolfpack
10-11-2007, 11:53 AM
Well, they did pummel the Rams, so I think 1-4 is more likely. But, yeah, the Panthers are seriously blowing this year. Easily the worst 3-2 team in the league. At least they're in the South (man has our division tanked or what?), so there's pretty solid hopes for the playoffs if only because everyone else in the division is about as wretched as we are.

At the Chicago meet-up, Barkeep suggested the 49ers were the worst 3-2 team out there, and I suggested the Lions. There's a lot of room for debate on this one, I guess.
the rampant discrimination towards and lack of respect for the mighty new england patriots continues!
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- The NFL has fined New England Patriots (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/clubhouse?team=nwe) linebacker Mike Vrabel (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=3982) $5,000 for an incident late in Sunday's game against the Browns (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/clubhouse?team=cle) that members of the Browns said was "dirty," according to Boston-area media reports.
The Browns were infuriated when, with 11 seconds left and the Browns running a play to spike the ball dead, Vrabel went low on Browns rookie left tackle Joe Thomas (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=8257), pushing him into quarterback Derek Anderson (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=7389).
"You've got to get fined for that," Browns left guard Eric Steinbach (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=6369) said of the play after the game. "If he's going to keep going on like that, maybe he doesn't care about a $5,000 fine. But I wouldn't want that reputation."
Vrabel said Friday on ESPN Radio that he would appeal. Earlier this week, when asked about Steinbach's comments, Vrabel said, "I'm sorry that they feel that way. I don't play that way, and I'm sorry they feel that way. We're going to move on."
You want to talk desperate? In an innocent little article about Qunicy Carter getting busted for pot possession again (hxxp://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3062195), a little sentence at the end floored me:
Earlier this year, ESPN.com reported that one NFC team was considering the possibility of signing Carter, but that never materialized.
I mean, how desperate do you have to be to consider signing a guy who was busy flaming out with the minor league Arena league?
Then I thought, what team in the NFC was in desperate need of a QB and also noted that Carter played his college ball at the U. of Georgia...

One thing I noticed recently also, is the utter non-existance of QB talent in the southeast of the NFL.
Moving north you got, Miami, Tampa, Jax, Atlanta, Carolina.
You've got a young, though semingly talented guy in Washinton and a grizzled veteran in baltimore, a busted up vet in Philly....
I mean its kinda Ugly down there from a QB perspective.

This is brutal to watch. The Dolphins look like total garbage. The only player doing anything is Ronnie Brown, who on any other team would be a Superstar. 24-3 with a 50 yard Ginn return, brought back by holding. Typical.

The Eagles are pissing me off beyond belief.
They keep shooting themselves in the foot, and they've allowed the Jets to run on them at will.
It looks like they're finally starting to stiffen, and get to Pennington.
Also, is any Eagle fan worried that they'll be going into the END ZONE OF DOOM~! in the 4th quarter? Akers was *awful*...and that's an understatement...at that end of the stadium.
Even though they have the lead, I don't like how things are shaping up.

Here was a letter to the editor from the San Jose Mercury News about the 49ers....
Incentive program for Nolan: He is no longer allowed to wear the suit but is told he can earn it. He is then given an English boarding school uniform with the shorts, the high socks and the blouse. Then with each win he can choose one item of the suit that he can add to his ensemble until eventually he earns the full suit. The jacket might be withheld until he secures a spot in the playoffs. For the Super Bowl, he gets a tux.

Yes got hit in the shoulder/elbow by Julius Peppers while trying to recover a fumble. They say it's a sprain, showed him on the sidelines with ice on it. It's is his non-throwing arm, so I'm hoping he'll be able to come back next week.
Cause if not its Tim Rattay, Tim Hasselbeck, and WR Urban as their QB's most likely.

In all seriousness, what a great game by the Packers defense, who pretty much won that game by themselves after the first offensive drive by the Packers was over and done with. I was pissed as hell about the offense at halftime, and the play of the Packer's safeties. Thank goodness one of those groups (the safeties) greatly improved their playmaking in the second half. Bigby can drive me nuts by his blown coverages sometimes (first half), and then he can makes some big plays sometimes (second half).
I hope the Packers spend the next two weeks(bye week next week) doing nothing but running the ball. Practice nothing but running. Then do it some more. Please.

Yes. Green Bay and Dallas are the best the NFC has to offer. I think both teams would get blown out like Dallas is tonight by Indy or New England. The Steelers are also probably better than anything the NFC has. The Pats won't have any competition until they play Indy in a few weeks and by then they should have their division clinched. The other 3 teams in the Patriots division have a combined 2 wins. In the NFC, who would have thought that the Bears and Saints would be at the bottom of their division and the Packers and Buccaneers would be at the top?

Fun game to watch, and I'll stand by my earlier statement: I think the Pats are going to go 16-0 if Brady doesn't get injured. The whole scandal about taping will help keep them motivated enough to do it, and they certainly have the talent.

At this point of the season (and as a Packer fan), I tend to agree with you. The Packers are not a Superbowl team until they can run for a first down on a 3rd and 1 play. As much as I enjoy the 5-1 record right now, I know the Patriots would smack them around most likely.
Dallas is tops in the NFC right now, like it or not. Washington could be pretty damn good (for the NFC) by the end of the year and more time for Jason Campbell at QB, I am impressed with him. Who knows what happens with Tampa Bay and the injury plagued RBs, but I thought the Titans would beat them today and they pulled it out.
I look forward to the Dallas-Redskin games though, as well as the Packers at Dallas the week after Thanksgiving.

The Packers had 14 points taken off the board by a bogus holding call and an obvious force out (almost the exact play by Bubba that the refs gave Chicago last week). The coaching play of the game may have been putting Hawk in man coverage on Cooley in the second half. Cooley had 7 catches for 97 yards in the first half and 2 catches for 8 yards in the second.
The running game is a mess though, but the defense and special teams are very good to this point. Brett's been a little hit and miss, but there's every reason to think this team will continue to get better every week. I think they are the second youngest team in the NFL.

That was kind of my point, how weak the NFC is. The Cowboys weren't terribly impressive last week either, and their wins are against teams with an overall record of 6-22. You can only play who's in front of you and all that, I was just expressing surprise that the Cowboys and Packers are the class of the conference right now, that there's nothing even close to being better.

Looks like Peter King agrees:
Goats of the Week
Referee Terry McAulay's crew at Green Bay-Washington, for an overall poor job and costing the Packers two legitimate touchdowns. First, there was a pathetic holding call on right tackle Mark Tauscher, negating one Favre touchdown pass; there was nothing close to a hold on the play. Last year, the officials were told not to call offensive holding unless it was something an official actually saw. Well, there's no way an official saw holding on Tauscher. Never happened. Then, a second Packers TD throw was negated when Bubba Franks cleanly caught a pass in the corner of the end zone with one foot down before getting driven out of the end zone by Washington cornerback Fred Smoot. Incomplete. Insane.

FIRE MARVIN LEWIS.
Don't care about the LB injuries. Don't care about the offensive line injuries.
This offense is bogged down by repetitive play calling. The imagination that was wowing people 2 years ago has become boring and predictable. Marvin has had 4 years to improve the defense, and right now they are one of the worst in football, even with healthy linebackers. He has brought the team back to respectability, but now it is time for a coach to come in who can take this team and its offense to the next level. Hell, I'd settle for a single playoff win, considering the state of the AFC and its complete and utter dominance by New England, Indianapolis, and Pittsburgh.
I have lost confidence with the first few weeks of the season that the current regime can get the Bengals there. I believed for a long time, but everyone around here has lost faith, including the players. There is no fire, just frustration. I couldn't even watch most of the second half yesterday and watch the team pretty much just go through the motions. And this was after a bye week that was supposed to "correct" all of the problems. Just horrible.

Something I've always wondered - do all the roughing the kicker penalties actually make it worth trying to block a punt? It's a great play sure, but if you don't score the touchdown it's probably only a gain of 40 and I'm willing to bet each team gets at least 5 roughing the kicker penalties for every blocked punt. That's 75 yards in penalties, and each one keeps a drive alive and is killing your defense.

The main function of the rush on the punt is to give the punter a sense of urgency. You don't want a punter taking his time and allowing the punt coverage to get down field. You need the punter to think he needs to get the ball off as fast as he possibly can, and that's when bad punts happen. So you need to bring players or you'll be fair catching everything that's not a touchback (or downed inside the 10).
Where players get in trouble is getting too anxious when they get close enough to try to block the punt. They are supposed to take an angle that will make it so they don't make contact with the punter as they come down.
Is it worth the risk? Yeah, because if you don't pressure the punter, your punt returns have no chance of doing anything ever. You can minimize the risk with good special teams coaching and smart players.

That's fine. Obviously you have to have some sort of rush - I'm not taking it to extremes. But the stupid, 1% chance to get the ball and 75% chance of a personal foul dive at the feet of the punter is the most maddening play in football. You can still make the punter get rid of the ball quickly, just don't leave your feet unless he still has the ball in his hands once you are through the line.

Falcons beat writer sums it up pretty well I think
There likely will be talk among the Falcons of sticking together and rallying for one another and all the other things that sound good but that's like putting icing on a mud pie. ... Opposing teams that boast just as many, if not more, injuries, problems and deficiencies, have found ways to win. The Falcons, meanwhile, continue to stumble backward, looking more and more awkward as the distance grows between woeful and mediocrity. ... The Falcons left the field at halftime to resounding boos from a crowd who'd seen them start quickly then flame out like a 100-meter runner miscast into a mile run. The boos quieted in the second half, though, because there weren't enough people left in the stands to create much of a ruckus.

I know Bobby Petrino is installing his own offense but the Falcons were the #1rushing team in the league last year. How does this team only have 13 rushes for a 100 yards going into the 4th qtr last night? It was still an 11 point game at that point so they weren't that far out of the game.

Because the team rushing stats were insanely inflated by Michael Vick's scrambling ability?
Granted, it seems silly that in a two possession game, when your only successful play is a breakaway run by Jerious Norwood, that you only run the ball 4 times a quarter in the first 3, but the '#1 rushing team' stat is extremely misleading IMO.

Chances of making a first down > chances of getting an onside kick (which you will need later if you punt now)

Maybe ESPN will learn from this: (http://www.nytimes.com/2007/10/17/sports/football/17kimmel.html?_r=1&ref=sports&oref=login)
Jimmy Kimmel’s appearance on ESPN’s “Monday Night Football” was his last.
Kimmel, the host of ABC’s late-night talk show, was put on early in the third quarter with the Giants leading the Atlanta Falcons, 21-10, ostensibly to enliven a rout.
He joked about where Joe Theismann was (fired and replaced by Ron Jaworski); cracked that it was Tony Kornheiser who got Theismann axed; asked Kornheiser and Jaworski if they bet on games (they played along); and said, “I’d also like to welcome Joe Theismann, watching from his living room with steam coming from his ears.”
The last remark was ignored by Kornheiser, Jaworski and Mike Tirico.
Jay Rothman, ESPN’s “Monday Night” producer, called Kimmel’s comments “classless and disappointing. It was cheap. The more he went on, the worse he got.”
Kimmel will not be invited back, Rothman said.
Theismann was more amused than annoyed by Kimmel’s comments, some of which he heard while watching TV at home. But he missed others while watching “CSI: Miami” on CBS, a new favorite since becoming a “free agent with nowhere to go.”
“I don’t have an opinion about what people say, but it’s nice to know you’re missed,” he said yesterday in a telephone interview. “It’s interesting that people remember me.”
He said, without rancor, that he is not fully engaged in “Monday Night” because “it has become Tony Kornheiser’s show,” more about issues than football.
