Social scientists have longed argued that any sufficiently lengthy internet fight will contain at least some vaguely interesting content.
Then all this happened, and they admitted they were wrong.

7.2 Charles, Nanny - Charles N Charge
One of the few in the Nanny/Butler/Maid category in which the whole show was based around. Again, very happy to have someone who was in my top 3 to start the draft. And really considering my mom is a witch, we really don't need a maid or a butler since she can just wiggle her nose and have the whole house clean and dinner served.
The possibility of funny business between the young heart throb nanny and the MILF mom, is sure to make for some good comedy as well.
Both this and Toni were ones that completely slipped my mind, but are solid picks.

I came real close to taking Chachi from Happy Days as a friend to prevent this pick from happening. Nice job getting him so late.

Ok, I've regrouped, and am ready to make the pick.
7.3 Daphne Moon, Frasier - Housekeeper/Butler/Nanny
She filled all of the above mentioned roles during her time on the show. And a stone cold hotty to boot.

I guess they're likely the best of the bunch, but I'm not sure they are much better over the rest. I think even they are weak compared to other categories. Even brother for example, Alex Keaton blows both of them out of the water. Of course in voting it's relative to the spot. My commentary is more about sitcoms in general which seem to have weaker daughter/sister roles.

7.6 Angela Bower (Who's the Boss?) - Mom
I picked Angela because she was the working mom who had Tony Danza working for her. Even though Maple Leafs chose Tony Micelli waaaaaay back in Round 3, I think that she provides the symmetry of successful (or intelligent) family members on my team.

I don't really disagree with anything you're saying. I think those two are a little more clearly at the top of their category, but if you're talking "top sitcom children" those two might not even crack the top 20.

6.11 Springfield, Location
I was originally going to wait on location for a sleeper pick I had, but I can't believe my #1 location Springfield is still here. I think along with Mayberry, it's the most famous city location for a show. Plus, I think what makes the show so great is all of the extra characters that make up Springfield. Considering my family is pretty zaney, it's a good match.
7.2 Charles, Nanny - Charles N Charge
One of the few in the Nanny/Butler/Maid category in which the whole show was based around. Again, very happy to have someone who was in my top 3 to start the draft. Crizzzzap, Daphne Moon as well? Housekeeper might be THE deepest category. I also love Latka as a wildcard pick. He's about the wildest card. I only wish someone could have picked Balki AND Latka on the same team - now THAT'S a show I wanna watch.
And Danny, it's not Bewitched I didn't watch, it's Andy Griffith - get my pop culture deficencies straight! (For the record I loved Bewitched, but after a full week of administering tests to kids my brain was fried)
Raiders Army
01-17-2009, 03:57 PM
I think we should put the TV show beside the name for voting. Some names are readily apparent, while others are not. At the very least, there needs to be some sort of consistency in how we name them. For example, Charles from Charles in Charge is more recognizable than if you said you selected Charles (no last name given). Esther Rolle might be a head-scratcher, but once you say Esther Rolle from Good Times it clicks. I don't think we should make the voters research our picks.

7.10 Richard "Richie" Cunningham, Happy Days - Brother/Son
The prototype for a sitcom brother/son, Richie was a good kid that got into tough spots that his friends and family bailed him out of in hilarious ways. He pestered his sister, drove his parents crazy sometimes, brought together a great cast of friends, and even eventually went off to college.

Wow thats a blast from the 80's, all one season of it. No George Jefferson for anyone now, if he was even a consideration, Sherman Hemsley played the Deacon. Here's a dad who's done it all. He's caught his son with porn. He's caught his son with a girl. Caught his son drinking, and caught him smokin out. He's even had the TV heartattack. Red is both loveable and evil, and has done it all. The perfect sitcom Dad.

Verrrrrry interesting. A bold move - the downside I see (besides a lot of people hating her and her dumb music) is that her show is considered a children's show rather than a "sitcom" or what-have-you. I wonder if the Flintstones should bear the same stigma?

8.8 Gob, Arrested Development - Bad Guy
I was wondering if anyone would go from this show. It's probably my favorite show of all time, but got axed so fast by FOX that it's not so much of a cultural touchstone. Gob's a damn great character though, and always trying to sleep with your brother's girlfriend? That's a bad guy.

It's considered a 'dramedy', a class of sitcoms that also includes M*A*S*H and Taxi.

9.1. Corky, Life Goes On- Wild Card
I mean, is there really any more of a true wildcard than Corky. His lack of complete mental facilities, combined with a slight mean streak created some real interesting times for the Thatcher (yes, I had to look up their last name) family.
FACT: Corky once burned down his fathers restaurant, only to blame it on the immigrant chef.
FACT: Corky once stood up to bullies by donning a leather jacket and lip-synching "Fight The Power" at a Talent Show

Ok, thinking outside the box on this one. A lot of sitcoms have a wacky theme, and my next pick most definitely fits the bill. With Archie Bunker as the dad, having a mom that can handle and deal with him is a tall order. So that led me to my pick:
9.3 The car, from My Mother the Car - Mom
Only a car possessed by the ghost of Jerry Van Dyke's character's mom that only communicates through the car's radio can take the spot of Edith Bunker.

I know I know...the rules "allow" for non-sitcom choices, but this one is interesting. Life Goes On was definitely a drama, but Corky did provide some laughs on the show (although he was the source of most of the drama as shown above). There are some other greats out there for Wildcard as well. It'll be interesting to see how the voters see this one.

I have been busier than expected and haven't been able to follow this from post to post. So if this has been discussed let me know.
But did anyone notice that by emphasizing the family sitcoms in the category sets, it made it a lot more difficult to utilize characters from "friend" or "work" or "situation" type comedies, like Friends, The Office, Seinfeld, etc.?
Of course it is a Television Family draft, so I guess that's not the goal. But I would have liked to see a draft which incorporated both the family sitcom and the other sitcom types to become a television comedy character draft of sorts.
But in any case, still looks like tons of fun. Great idea for a draft. :)

Was the car American-made? Because if it's not, I think Archie's going to have a serious problem with this pick.
According to Wikipedia, All-American, baby!
The car used in the show was an amalgam of different cars. "Mother" was built by Barris Kustom Industries and was powered by a 283 cubic inch (4.6 L) Chevrolet V8 and Powerglide automatic transmission. The carnation red body with white top was created from parts of a Model T, a Maxwell, a Hudson and a Chevrolet. Mother's hood, radiator shell and "Porter" radiator script were custom made. The design was anachronistic in many ways, with features from vehicles of the early 1920s and even the 1910s.

I sent in a list, but I see the doc hasn't picked for me yet, so I'll review and make sure my pick hasn't gone.

Four of us here, we will just need Karl to come on to finish this up.

10.8 Ethel Mertz, I Love Lucy - Best Friend
Lucy and Ethel were a great team. In fact, perhaps the most memorable I Love Lucy moment doesn't even involve Desi. It is the chocolate factory scene where Lucy and Ethel fall behind schedule as the conveyor belt starts moving too fast for them to keep up.

Ah, I see everyone picked bad guy, so I am safe to say I should've picked COL Klink as my bad guy instead of Joy Turner, but oh well.
Suprised nobody took Sideshow Bob.

Prediction: He will pick God/Jesus from some show that had him as a major character.

You just ruined my last pick, I was going to take him as brother.
MikeVic

As the sister?
cartman

For my final pick, I go into the category of 'sister'. This is another definite outside the box pick, but in the realm of sitcoms it makes perfect sense. My pick is:
10.10 Buffy Wilson, Bosom Buddies - Sister
http://www.thegreatcornholio.com/images/bb2.jpg
This character is the 'sister' to Tom Hanks' Kip Wilson, when he needs to keep his female identity in place, and not get kicked out of the all-women's hotel where he is staying. This construct was a key reason the plot was able to work. Plus, it gets Tom Hanks on my team.

The more I think about Boy Meets World, the more I wish I had remembered it. There are some real good characters to use in there.
