What's the largest city in the U.S. with no major sports team? (meaning MLB, NFL, NBA, NHL presumably)

Cincinnati :D

Might depend on the definition of "city" but I think Las Vegas might be the answer.

This site lists Columbus, Ohio and Austin Texas as the #14 and #15 cities in the US - but it clearly is counting only the city proper - not the "metro area" and that makes a huge difference. I think most of us tend to think in terms of "market size" rather than municipal limits... I don't think anyone intuitively puts Columbus or Austin into their top 20 cities in the US, which reveals that this may not be the most intuitive way of thinking.

Eagles fan: LOL

Quicksand: Good point, unfortunately it only says 'city', so I don't know what criteria it's going by. The answser given is El Paso, TX and gives the popluation as 612,000, so chances are it's not including metro area, not going by census numbers, and possibly just not correct. I don't believe Austin has any major sports teams (Columbus has the Blue Jackets).

Senator: Never heard of Cloudcroft. Good place to visit?

Sorry... I forgot about the Blue Jackets...and about oggie generally, which is normal for me.

There's no real answer to this, due to the variables Quik mentioned.

My guess is Austin. I can tell you that the answer to this same trivia question was San Jose, CA for years and years and years, until the Sharks came along.

I would be Oklahoma City is the largest city without a pro sports franchise. If you mean largest by land area anyway. I believe Oklahoma City is behind only Los Angeles and Jacksonville.

Austin is the largest city by population, not including metro areas. Followed by Oklahoma City, Tucson and Las Vegas.

The site must be using old census data. Vegas is now over 1 million and still growing. I'd say Vegas is it now.

Ryche

The metro area of Vegas is no doubt over 1 million. The figures I saw just counted the city proper though.

The first metro area that I see on A's list w/o a team is Norfolk-Virginia Beach-Newport News, VA 1,544,945

Is that right?

Wow, wouldn't have picked VA Beach metro area for largest city including metro area without a major sports team.

Anrhy, you've been on quite an info hunt today. :)

JAG, thanks, it comes with the territory of being a geographer.

Couple of trivia remarks that I have used to throw folks. Many are surprised that Atlanta is not the South's (non-Texas) largest city. Even Virginia Beach have been larger than Atlanta for a few decades.

I always like to shock folks in saying that San Antonio is a top 10 city (has been since 1980), most don't realize that. They were #10 but keeps moving up as Detroit goes down.

San Jose is #11 and bigger than San Francisco. Most, again, do not realize that even though San Jose has been stuck on #11 for quite a while.

When I got interested in this city list in the 1960s, the top 5 were NY-Chic-LA-Phil-Det (if I recall). The migration shifts since 1960 have been historic, along the lines of the post-Civil War shift to the North and the Westward migration before that.
