I want to start a league in 1970 with a completely fictional player file (I would prefer to use a real one but there seems to be some minor problems). Can you tell this ignorant old fart how to do that? Also, what would be the cap number for 1970, assuming that it would progress to 750 for 2003? Thanks.

Okay, let me keep this simple. How does one start with a completely fictional player universe (OPU/2PU)?
To keep it simple, you might want to use an existing OPU file. Shorty posted this one:
http://www.jbl.ootp-leagues.com/opu2001.csv
Open it in Excel and alter the "1970" value to "1948" (that's this birth year) and the "2001" value to "1969" (the year he entered the league). Save as *.csv.
Now, open the "Player File Generator", enter "1970" as starting year, and the cap value (I don't know what to put here, maybe 100?).
Last, click "Generate Player file" and select the *.csv file. Then pick where to save the finished player file, and start a new FOF2k4 game with it.

I think I did something wrong. Starting with this file, all teams get filled with fictional players - except the one that I chose to start with. There are a slew of FA though. What did I miss?
I'm not sure I understand? Is your own team completely empty?

I was wondering the same thing. I don't understand how to use the spreadsheet function, is there an easier way to do this? It's good to hear others are as confused as I am.

If someone has a OPU or a full fictional player file, then he can post or email you the *.fdt file, the spreadsheets are only needed if you want to do your own modifications.

Yes, that is correct.

Can someone duplicate these steps and see if the results are the same?

Do you have it set for your scouts to sign players to fill out the roster? In FOF4 whenever I started a OPU without that option my team would be empty and I would have to manually sign all my players.

Sloan, that is not a New Game Option. It is once you have the players file loaded. At what point will the AI fill my roster?

You can set it in the Global Options before you start a new game.

Dola-
I just tested it with the file posted above. I didn't do the date change, but with the option set for scouts to sign players for me I had a roster, and with the option not selected my roster was empty.
The option has to be selected before you start the new game though.

Thank you, that worked even with the date change.

Or don't download the 2001 one, and just download the 1965 one.

I guess the next test would be to fast sim until 2003 to see what kind of salaries/cap there would be in 2003 if starting with a cap number of 100 in 1970. Unless someone else has done this....
No, not that I know of. Glad to see someone could help you!

bump.....
I humbly submit that this post should be in the all-inclusive reference list. Very informative and useful when wanting to start a OPU.
It can be found by searching for OPU, but it's more difficult to find than I believe it should be.

Zou, post a link to this thread in the All-Inclusive and SD will probably add it.

Just an answer to your salary cap number question. If you give it a 150 and you have an average growth rate of 5%/year then you would have 750 after 33 years. It's a CAGR calculation....
B=750/((c+1)^n)
B=begining value
c=average growth rate (for 5% use .05).
n=# of years from begining to current.
So from 1970 to 2003 using 5% youwould have:
B=750/((1.05)^33)=149.9.
...or I could be completely full of crap.
