I started a new career in 1970, using the modified OPU file with the starting cap at 100 and default cap increase settings of 28 to 80. Just a couple of quick observations.
Every single player on all of the rosters have a 1 yr, $30k contract. With a cap of $10m, that means every team has $8.41m available under cap.
In 1971, the cap goes to around $17m (three tests going to 1971 shows the cap varying from $15m to $18m). Every single player is now a FA so all teams have $17m under the cap.
In 1972, with the cap now at around $23m (+/-$4m), we are seeing some longer term contracts with cap availability running from $10m to $23m.
Projecting this out, we would see a salary cap of around $125m in 2003.
