my friend and I went and got it, i can't get it till it comes in blockbuster on friday tho, i sold some games there to buy it and their shipment comes in then. :( We played one game, Ohio State vs. Florida State and he won with Florida State at home 14-10. I was up 10-0 at half, but he sacked my QB a few times and after that it was over. He was missing all my WR's, etc.

Quick impressions (after 2 games with Rutgers - the first a 17-0 win against UConn and the second a 21-14 win over Kansas State...see note on this below)...
Let me first state that I only played a few games of last year's version (I'd say under 10), as my roommates and I were completely into Madden, so it's not like I'm playing the 2005 version after dominating on 2004. Quite the contrary, actually...:)
I started out on Varsity level, which really was too easy, as evidenced by my easy victory over UConn where Orlovsky couldn't hit the side of a barn and Terry Caulley was basically a non-factor, along with my domination over #14-ranked Kansas State (and Sproles) until I bumped it up to All-American in the 2nd half. Once I did that, it was much harder...they outscored me over that period, but I did hold on for the victory.
The running game is really good. Your blockers actually seek out people to hit...they don't just stand around or chip off the nearest guy. On sweeps and such they will lead the way and dish out some punishment. Again, playing with Rutgers and having a fast RB in Justise Hairston and an equally quick and powerful FB in Brian Leonard, allowed me to really succeed running the ball (and to any RU fans out there--Leonard is a BEAST).
I had some trouble passing the ball, as it is very tough to throw accurately when going backwards or on the run...but at the same time, this feels right, and thats a good thing. Once I got my feet set more often, I was throwing strikes.
Defense has been tough, as I started giving up the big pass play once I bumped up the difficulty. This is to be expected though, as my CBs are both new starters and will take some seasoning. Safeties seem to break well on the ball when floating back in zone coverage. I did stop the run well, as my front 7 is a strong suit, but again, we'll see once I play more on the higher difficulty.
Kicking game is not complex at all...there shouldn't be a learning curve here. My very first kickoff I got max distance and very good accuracy. Something to note...maybe it was just where I played both my games (Rutgers Stadium), but I found it pretty hard to actually see the uprights on field goal attempts. Not a big deal, as once you get coordinated you'll be fine kicking it, but it freaked me out on my first try and I thought someone had already ripped down the goalpost before the game was over :).
Minor thing that pissed me off...they have Brian Leonard as a junior when he's actually a redshirt sophomore :). Okay, not a big deal until I start my dynasty, but you can't edit a player's class, so it looks like I'll copy down his ratings, create a new player and then delete the old Leonard.
One thing that I am missing that was present in last year's Madden (I doubt it was in last year's NCAA) is the ability to sub players on the fly. I believe this was accomplished by pressing the circle button when selecting a formation, and it allowed you to cycle through potential changes to the personnel in your formation, such as RB Swap, WR flip, Slot switch, TE switch, etc. This is something I would use frequently to put my FB Leonard in the HB slot if I wanted him to run more than a dive or blast, as that is how the great majority of FB plays are designed.
A minor inconvienence, but I guess I can just make him the RB in a specific formation.
Will post more impressions as I play more...

Rag, I didn't ask, but I suspect that either:
a) My EBGames was the same way, or
b) the Xbox version has been flying off the shelves locally due to Xbox Live support.
I saw a ton of PS2 versions, but they only had the one Xbox version left when I got there.
I have to think that your store was an isolated thing, because as huge as this is for MS, there's no reason not to flood the market with copies so everybody can buy it (and a Live kit for those who don't already have it), y'know?

SackAttack

Rag - that definitely sounds shifty. I just don't see any way that any company would order only 4 copies per store of any EA game, let alone their biggest football title. The only thing I can figure is perhaps it's a ploy to boost future preorders?

Some early thoughts.
1) Passes down the sideline have a disturbing tendency to be a good six inches out of bounds.
2) Do receivers ever catch bullet passes? Doesn't seem like it.
3) What's with the whole "four guys standing around the spot where the ball is headed" when it's barely been released from the QB's hand?

take that XBox.
And PS.. the guy at my Gamestop said they've had over 300 pre-orders already for Madden.
Is it true they have sold 500k just off preorders? That is amazing if it is true because if you times that by 50 that is ......$25,000,000.....

There is slow down but it is not as serious as the X-Box I would assume because X-Box users are reporting glitchs and what not.... But in my opinion the slow down helps the running game...

This is one change I was really hoping they would make, it alone would of made it worth the money for me. I like to use 2 RB's, and I love the ability to quick sub in Madden.
On a side note, I went into the local Blockbuster yesterday and the had about 60 copies of the game on the back counter (pretty even mix of PS2, and X-Box). When I asked about buying one the Manager told me they were the rentals, and they wouldn't get the retail until the Tuesday shipment. Not sure I'm buying that, but I pre-bought it for $39.99 with 2 trade ins. By the way one of those trade ins I got for $4.99 at CC on last Thursday, and got $21 in credit towards NCAA ;)

I didn't notice that slowdown was a big problem on the PS2 version so far. Like I said yesterday, simming is really slow. It took me hours to sim 5 seasons to get rid of the nameless players.
I also wish you could create a team that already exists in the game and still have the announcers recognize the names. :( I like to add the Ivy League to the MAC, but I get tired of the generic stadiums for teams like Cornell. Plus, their unis are boring.

He just means that the crowd really gets into the game. The home field advantage thing where your controller vibrates and the screen shakes when you are the visiting team and the home team is on defense. If you are at a school where the fans are into the game, that is.

In my two games i played I didnt notice ANY slowdown on the PS2 version. I actually said to my friend it seems smoother than any other version I've played. The only bugs I noticed was on missed field goals the mascots would bang their heads against the goal post and fall down, too bad their head wasn't even coming close to hitting anything, and also a tackler made a tackle and magically tilted back upright to taunt, instead of actually standing up. The missed field goal thing happened twice, while the player warping happened once, both were after the plays were done so they don't really matter.
Kodos

I know it isn't a big leap graphically, but it is a little prettier than last year's game. The helmets are better, the player models are better, the weather effects are better. I'm pretty pleased so far.

As far as bugs go, there is considerable slowdown in the menus. In 2004 there was slowdown when it had to load the ESPN covers, and that is still there as well. But now there just seems to be more slowdown in general when viewing stats, or flipping/sorting through a lot of the screens.
CraigSca

Ok, bug likes ghosting after a play or slow menus I can handle. My concern was easy money plays, scoring, stats issues or other things that would drastically hamper gameplay.

Love this refreshing bit of honesty I got from GameStop (I had cancelled my Amazon order and wanted to get it night of release)... I called them yesterday wanting to see if the game was out, and was told that they were getting it "first thing in the morning", and that I could still come in and put in a reservation.
Of course, this was at 6:30 PM, and I figured I could just pick it up tommorrow (today), and the associate said "The store manager has told us to only put out enough copies for the reservations, and if you didn't have a reservation, to say that the store is out of stock, and not expecting another shipment for 3-4 weeks"..
I asked the guy flat out, "So you're going to have copies of the game in back, but not sell it to "punish" the folks who don't want to preorder?".. at least he had the grace to sound embarassed when he said. "It's not my choice.. it's my manager's policy and out of my hands.."
I re-ordered from Amazon. Won't be ordering from a store managed by an ignorant fucktard like this GameStop's manager again :)

I think these folks get graded on how many reservations they take at the store.
It's a bit seedy, but it's not a EB/Gamestop thing only, one of my friends worked at a Suncoast, real knowledgeable, hardest worker they had, closed the store 3-4 nights a week, but couldn't sell their "replay" program worth a bean.
Over six months, they called him in on not making his percentages 3 times, put two notices of reprimand on his weekend, and then dismissed him, all because he couldn't sell the stupid "Club" membership program.

They get some of your money early, and then when you go in, then you might impulse buy another game..
Also.. if they get enough people to fall for it, they can use that to "manage" how many copies of the new game they have to order.. (so you wouldn't be stuck with 30 copies of Driv3r, for example)

Haha, I see that your stuck in your ways. No big deal either way.
But I don't think its dumb on anyone's end. It makes good business sense from the stores perspective: It allows them to satisfy their customers demand. They need to have some sort of idea of how many people want the game, or else they'd need to carry excess inventory, which would end up costing us, the consumers, in the end.

My first season is finished.. I played two games, and went ahead to the recruiting and finished that in about 15-20 minutes.
Initial thoughts on gameplay:
Everything is a helluva lot smoother than last year. It seems faster, which makes you have to respond to things quicker. The offensive line can be one lean, mean blocking machine during the runs. Finally they don't just stand there and let the defense come to them. Passing against Oklahoma as a very average team was tough, as it should have been. I completed just under 50% of them, for less than 100 yards. It was a very pitiful game indeed.
The recruiting has been improved as well. No more tedious click, down, click, down, click down, click. Select, click down.. You know what I am talkin about! You have the option of scouting a player for points depending on the location of the player. In-state is 5 points, and out of state goes up to 15 I believe, from what I saw anyways. You can then offer a pitch which are the same as last year except they added in coaching prestige.
I had a very poor recruiting class, 4 guys, the highest being a 4 star SS(which I went all out and.. and one other player). I think since I went all out on 2 4 star players, was the only reason they decided to come. I used basically all of my points on them both, so that's cool I think. But I really hurt my chances of getting anybody else.
I went ahead to the next off-season and it was 'Position Changes'. Here you can see if your players would be better at other positions. My team is very unathletic so there were no changes. This is a very cool option, especially if you're loaded at one position such as WR, move him to CB to have a dominant secondary next year. indeed cool.
That's all for now!!!
Time to PLAY a full season. See ya next week this time.

I can't decide when I get this game which team to play.. ps, creating a school in Alaska as a cupcake last year was hard as hell because no recruits out of Alaska ever want to come.
My local Best Buy had at least 100 copies for each platform earlier this afternoon. They also had a display set up with 2 recliners, a 50 some inch widescreen HDTV and surround sound speakers with the game hooked up. Cripes, I almost shed a tear - it was such a beautiful sight. We played for almost 40 minutes before anyone else came over to play. All I needed was a cold libation and I could have stayed all day.
Now, time for that icy cold libation and some dynasty.

Yeah, I went into Best Buy and saw a whole row of them. EB only got 4 XBox ones per store? F that. Best Buy had about 20 of them sitting on a shelf and probably a lot more in the back. I didn't look for the uber-l33t set up, I just grabbed and went.
Yeah, I work at Wal-Mart and we didn't get our copies until 2:15PM today. When we finally got them we got 40 copies of the PS2 version, 4 of the X-BOX, and 3 for the Gamecube. Nonstop calling all day long.
Well I finally got a chance to play after coming home from the worst traffic in South Florida's history... this game is great and on the highest level I already have Miami on the ropes 30-7... I love this game. :)

Well, I am having the slowdown problem on XBox and it is VERY annoying. Not only for the fact of the slowdown itself, but also that EA could let something so blatant and easy to notice slip through. I am going to take this back and get the PS2 version but this is going to be the last money EA sees from me for quite a long time.

I just finished my first game on All-American. Colorado vs. Colorado state in a mudfest. I lost 29-14, and it was a very fun game. I don't know why people here are complaining about the slowdown (yes I do own the Xbox version). It does not affect game play at all. The difference between faster players and slower players is amazing, and really adds another realm of realism to the games. Great game thus far. Time to start a dynasty with San Jose state :).
See you guys on Xbox live.
Just playing around with a few games for a while....a few little things I noticed (PS2) that add alot for a grognard like me:
* Variations on the strength, duration of referee whistle blows. Long hard whistles, 3 quick whistles, and the welcome addition of the referee blowing the whistle (you can hear this from the play calling screen) when the ball is set and the 25 second clock starts.
* The field texture and weather effects seem even more realistic than past versions, a snowy grass field wears down during a game, etc.
* The addition of individual cheering fans going crazy is a nice touch.
* As mentioned before, throwing without being set in the pocket is finally much more difficult.
* The stadium pulse/crowd hype is cool, except the announcers seem to say a variation of "this place is going crazy!" almost every play. I get the picture after a few times, but not a showstopper.
* Unless I'm just missing it, they finally got rid of the "overkick" feature on kickoffs/FG's. You can still shank/pull it on the downswing of the bar, but you can't go past the max power anymore. Makes sense to me.
* Making homeade signs is a great idea. Has anyone played around with this more though? For example, if I create school specific signs on my profile (such as "Let's Go PITT), are these signs showing up in other stadiums with different teams or even at road games with my team? Also, I haven't seen a fan hold up one of my signs yet at all - does the user need to trigger this with the "user-controlled celebrations" or will this automatically occur.
On a similar note, will players still celebrate and will it cut to the fans/mascots celebrating without the user trying to force a celebration?
* The replays utilize much better "TV-style" angles - and scoring plays are often shown 2 or 3 times with different angles each time. Nice touch, even better implemented than previous versions.
That's all I really have for now. Like I said, just little stuff, but still catches my eye enough to add even more enjoyment. Enjoy the game though, I sure am so far!

I tried that too, and it didn't seem to work. One thing that may be causing it is the size of the stadium you are playing in. In smaller stadiums, it is not as noticeable, likewise, in practice mode, there is no slowdown at all.
It didn't bother me as much until I went into practice mode and saw how it 'should' play. Then, going back and playing a real game, it was terrible. I guess I could see that some people may not be bothered by it, or even notice, but it bugs the shit out of me.

Some random thoughts:
1) I know some people said this year's game is only a mild improvement in the graphical department. However, I played it on the PS2 last year and the XBox this year. Going from one system to the other, and advancing a year = Major Graphical Improvement. I can't even place my finger on it, but it just looks better, crisper.
2) Switching from the PS2 to the X-Box is traumatic in that I can't find my "square" receiver" What about the circle receiver? Worse yet, both systems have an "X" receiver, but the x button isn't where I'm used to it. I see X open, I go to pass to X, but I'm hitting the "A" button which is where my brain thinks "X" should be.
3. I'm only playing in classic camera mode. Why didn't I ever play with this camera before? It's a little bit further back and makes seeing the field much easier than the tighter view of the default camera.
4. I've never found running inside to be productive due the lack of a good hole ever really opening up. That is no longer true! I love watching holes opening up and it's even better when I actually hit them on time.
5. I love the agile running system. Reggie Bush has great moves and I'm starting to get some big running plays out of him in the game through the agile running system. Hopefully, not all backs can move like this though (I don't want to see 250 pound HB's making these type of moves in the game)
6. The spin button is actually useful in this iteration of the game. I've never found it to be that useful before but it is aiding in breaking off some of those big runs.
7. Finally slow quarterbacks can't scramble like they could last year (least I could get some big runs with Matt last year.) Matt Leinart is getting lit up when I try to run with him.
8. I'm actually needing the throw away button, and getting used to it being the white circle on the X-Box and reaching that is also a tough transition. (By the way, my X-Box seemed to come with the smaller "S-Controller" and my wife bought an extra one when she bought me the system.)
9. I've only played practice mode so far due to my need to transition as previously mentioned. I can't wait to try the dynasty mode soon (I'm going to sim the first 4 years to have all named athletes as well as I did last year.)

There damn well better be an option. I don't want to see the fan drop his sign onto the field 5 times a game! Or the kid who needs money from mom. It's people who complained about it that got the crap into the game! After before the game, after touchdowns, and at the end of the game are the only times they should show them. bought the x-box version tonight. a few thoughts:
1- haven't noticed the slowdown at all. I'm using the default cameras and there hasn't been a problem.
2- passing is for shit. I bumped up both my ability and the computers ability, and still we're both completing somewhere around 30% of our passes.
3- started out at Varsity as OSU against UCLA. Ended up switching to All American at halftime after a 27-0 first half. Finished the game 32-7 with UCLA getting something like 40 yards passing and 20 yards rushing. Played the next game at home against Tulsa on All American. Again, low passing numbers, but the game was much more competitive. Tulsa ended up beating me 35-28 on a last second Hail Mary pass.
4- penalties. I've already bumped up the penalties three notches, but I'm still getting (so far) a total of ONE penalty per game.
You'll definitely need to do some slider tweaking with this one, but that being said... it's still a helluva lot of fun.

I have to admit though that the signs are pretty cool. I like the on that says:
''I'm not enrolled here anymore dad!'' I like the atmosphere of this years game too, It doesn't feel sterile and boring. I would have liked additions to the Top 25 greatest games ever. Seems like they just copied and pasted the old ones from last year into this one.. Other than a few small flaws I think its a great game.

After a few hours of practice and some simming of a dynasty (to have fun with the dynasty mode as well as get rid of playing with players who don't have names) I have a few more thoughts:
1. Dynasty mode does not seem to be simming slower to me. In fact, it is simming faster than my PS2 version does from last year. I just popped it into compare, and it is definitely faster (but I haven't gotten to an offseason of recruiting yet.)
2. The dynasty mode is going slower for me, because I find myself agonizing, well ok that might be too strong of a word, but I find myself carefully considering how to discipline my players. For example, my star DT just forged a name on his progress report and got caught. I debated between suspending him for a half or a full game. I finally decided on the full game suspension (it didn't hurt that my next game is against Stanford whom I expect the team will easily beat even in sim mode)
3. The Sports Illustrated Covers were great last year, they are still great, but I wish something more had been added to the game in this regard. Perhaps there is more variety in the covers, but there is nothing that makes you go wow in this section that I have seen.
4. That being said, I like following the list of the hardest places to play, I hope this list effectively fluctuates as teams win and lose.
5. I can't wait to get to the offseason and see how recruiting is :)
6. In practice mode, I'm still having trouble adjusting to the idea that the "X" receiver is not the bottom button of the 4 buttons in a diamond pattern on the XBox controller.
Overall, I'm very happy with my purchase :)

Hence my name.
I only had time to get one game in because my wireless controller's batteries are almost dead and I'm out of AA's.
Anyhow, I'm loving what I've seen thus far. On default AA, I could almost see where 15 min quarters are feaseable and well, the CPU runs like heck with longer games, imo. I did notice a tad slowdown on NCAA cam, but I use Classic to get a better view of my recievers and that works just fine.. thanks to someone from here for that tidbit. I used 10 min quarters and the clock was around 5 secs on every play for me with all the stuff you can do at the LOS. This just in: THERE ARE PUNT RETURNS!
Only one game, but I think they tightened the game up pretty well and I haven't even touched recruiting yet. As soon as rosters are out, I'll be playing all weekend. I love the crowd noise and interaction as well... really adds to the game experience.

Ok, now I am agonizing over a decision. #11, Matt Leinart just was caught cheating on an exam. The dean wanted to expel him. We got him not to do that by promising to suspend him and having him retake the exam. Do I suspend him just one game? Do I suspend him just a half? This is a pretty serious infraction, but our next game is against a surprisingly strong ASU team (ranked 19th in this season.)
Also, the same week my star DT got caught for the 2nd time, this time for being late to class repetitively. Does he get the same suspension of only a game? Does that mean I'm being too light on Leinart? Also, I'm watching the little green bar telling me what the NCAA might think of all of this. Also, I notice this DT doesn't have as high of a internal discipline rating as Leinart does. How does that influence my decision? I wonder if we will be able to see some measure of discipline ratings in the recruiting process?

I'd say maybe a bit too much. I've had to discipline 4 different players, 1 of them twice (that DT) in the course of 7 weeks. However, overall I'm quite happy with the effect. I ended up suspending them both for a week, since it was the DT's second offense I didn't think he should get a lighter penalty. I ended up winning 27-3 as the computer decided to have us run the ball MUCH more than usual. I didn't change my strategy settings at all, as I usually keep them 50/50 because I think Leinart, Williams, and Bush are just a terrific trio. However, without me changing any settings, the computer ran the ball more. The backup QB played decently, but Bush stepped up with 160 yards rushing on 25 carries. I think it's great that the AI adjusted our team strategy like that :)
Also, I love the addition of Box scores to the game. You don't see them if you sim a week at a time (I didn't realize this the first few weeks.) You have to sim just your game to see them (I think.) Anyway, they are great fun too, especially while just simming the first few years of the dynasty :)
PS: I'm worried that Leinart's suspension of only a game may have been too light on my part and it might come back to bite me. Hopefully not :)

I realized that my wireless keyboard that I use for my computer at school has a USB connection, which means it can plug into my PS2. It was real easy filling in Rutgers' roster, and then I printed out a depth chart for the rest of the Big East (minus Temple...who cares about them) and edited the names in for the starters. The six teams took me less than an hour, and its nice having the names.
Anyway, I'd like to edit the "best" players so the names will be there among leaders in stats/awards/etc. Does anyone know of a website that maybe ranks the top 10 or so players at every position (at least according to one person's opinion)?

Well through 10 weeks, I have had 8 different guys to discipline, and I have chosen to ignore disciplining Reggie Bush who copied a friend's homework as I had already ruined Leinart's change at the Heisman with his suspension, but Bush still has a chance ;)
Considering there are almost 70 guys on the team, I don't think an average of a guy a week is really that high.
Also, I just noticed that the game has in season player progression! That is a great addition that I somehow missed hearing about until I just noticed it. Leinart has gained 2 overall points this year, as have quite a few other guys who are playing a lot.

What options do you have when you are going to disipline a player? Can you suspend them for any period of time? ie half, game, 2 games, 3 games, etc. Also how does this affect the player when he gets back? And what kind of "pressure" is there to actually suspend them?

I actually found this posted on another forum, and its what I'm talking about above. Anyone know where I can find something like this for other positions?

thats a pretty lazy review, they admit they havne't touched the dynasty mode very much, but they feel they can fully grade the game, give me a break. Not only that but they haven't hardly touched it, but they can assure you other than suspensions nothing else is changed.

Whew. I just played my first game in my dynasty as San Jose state. It was a triple overtime thriller that I lost 20-17 to San Diego state. Difficulty was set to AA, great game. My team played it's heart out, and it's a miracle the game was that close with the roster I have.

You can suspend them for a quarter, 2 quarters, 3 quarters, any number of games you want from 1-12, or the remainder of the season. I'm not sure yet how it affects them, except Leinart's composure seemed to go down just a little, and his stats weren't as good for the remainder of the season. Your team has a green bar that indicates how likely the NCAA is to investigate them. That bar gets longer as you ignore infractions. It gets smaller when you discipline players. I've read that the NCAA can give your team a variety of sanctions if you don't keep a clean program ranging from minor sanctions to in extreme cases closing the program down. Your team also has a team discipline rating, and presumably players might be more likely to committ infractions if you let discipline get lax.

I'm currently playing exhibition games on AA mode. Just finished UCLA v. WSU.
Ended up shutting them out. Running away with the game in the 4th quarter.
Something I've noticed with the ''Toughest Stadiums '' is that the game will be close for the first 3 quarters but with homefield advantage setting in during the 4th quarter as the away team just losses composure due to the crowd and they definately make more mistakes in the 4th thus handing me the win.

That might be something to try to do with State Penn, or the Fleagles. :D
I got the game earlier today. I think it's quite good, but I do have to get adjusted to some of the new mechanics of the game. I've played quite a few 2 minute quarter rivalry games (to unlock rivalry trophies so far.)
I don't know if this was posted, but a guy by the name of Poo Diddy over at MaddenNation.com got the game earlier and already has real name files available for the PS2.

I don't have the game;), but I believe you can call a timeout and if your team captain is composed, he can possibly settle the other players down.
Nice one. As a Big East guy, I think I'll create "Fuck the ACC."
Agreed! Never would have thought I'd ever agree on something with a Rutgers fan :D
Anyone who has simmed ahead in dynasty mode already, do the conferences continue thier scheduled reallignment after the first season (Boston College to the ACC, Louisville and Cincy to the Big East, some MAC/CUSA/WAC/MTWEST/SunBelt switches?
And if you have noticed, how frequently (if at all) do teams decide to change conferences as the dynasty progresses?

This is so cool.

Hey, my son and I did the same thing last night for our Iowa Hawkeyes. Here's a sight I found this morning that we will probably use to get in the best players at each position for other teams. You can get the top 25 at each position or the top 200 players overall. I wish they listed their number but since they don't I'll just assume they are the top guy on their teams depth chart. Hope this helps.

My friend and I turned off the discipline assistant so that when someone needs discipline it will tell us to do it.
Unfortuently when simming week to week it never told us and my friend get penalized by the NCAA at the end of the season and lost 10 scolarships for the next two years.
Question: Does the discipline screen work like the injury screen and you need to check it every week to see what is going on? I think it would be better if after a game the game told you in you had an injury or discipline addition so then you'd know to look

It has some comparisons, preorders typically get the game a day or two early, ordering tickets early get you better seats.
Besides, why the hell do you care? Someone run over your dog today?

Yes, if you turn off the assistant (which I did), then you need to check that screen every week. I agree that a message would be nice, but I just entered into the habit of checking my injury list and my discipline list each week. I'm glad they are at least right next to each other.

I haven't simmed ahead that far yet because I spent two hours last night enjoying all of the details and only simmed one season. However, I had a few patients cancel, and I have a 2 hour break this morning. So, I've been reading the long thread about the game at operation sports. THEY DON'T REALIGN AND IT SUCKS!
The Big East is pathetic and should even be consdier a real conference after season 1. In my dynasty I made Northeastern University a D.I school and moved Tmeple down so I could play in the Big East. Then after season one the Big East kicked my friend out (Rutgers) and added FIU (apparently they really missed Miami). So the Big East looks really pathetic now.

Recruiting Gripe:
Being a I-AA that moved to teh Big East my first season was horrid, I managed to some how win one game. I think went into the offseason and recruited for my gaps and tried to get a few impact players.
Going into the last week I had 0 MLB on teh team or signed to play. I ahd 1 OLB on the team and zero signed.
I had two MLB that had me as their #1 choice and 3 OLB that had me in their top 3. I also had a MLB and OLB that had me very high but not in the top 3. All of these players had been recruited for multiple weeks.
After loading them up with points I simmed recruiting and 2 OLB signed but none of the MLB!!!!!!!! I then went to see where these two MLB that had me as their Top choice end up signed...
THEY DIDN"T SIGN WITH ANYONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So now I have 4 walkons at MLB

Finished my first season with my 2 star created team. Went to the Emerald Bowl where I surprised myself beating NIU 21-13. Off to recruiting.
I went after mostly only players that I was in the Top 3. I survived with freshman that will be starting over my pathetic returning players.
Two surprises in recruiting. Since I'm running a wishbone-option offense I needed another RB and was going after a 2* in week 3 when I noticed that the #1 HB hadn't signed with anyone yet. It said his interest in my team was high. So I say why not I have extra points and I put 20 on him with coaching style as the pitch. Advance to next week and he signs with me. Couldn't believe it.
Second surprise was I looked through the athletes trying to pick up a speedy QB, and I see a monster. 6'10, 324 lbs and he runs a 4.9 40. 3* and interest high I go after him. He signs with me and I get to assign his position. I had him pegged as a DT, but his rating at LG was even better, 76. Immediate starter for me. Play the first game of the season and he is a beast. I watch replays just so I can watch him line-up and run around.

Go to the depth charts during the 4th quarter and you'll see why! Their ratings go down during the game when they're shittin there pants. I've had a guy be -4 overall against a tough opponent.

thats a intended feature kevin.. they didnt academically "qualify" and they turn up again in 2 years as juco transfers
 I thought this was some kind of bug but thats sweet. 2 things have bothered me about gameplay though. First, when you're on offense and you hike the ball without pressing any direction, the QB will automatically play for you, so you don't get a true drop back when you pass.
Also, I have a PS2, and Circle on defense is speed burst. When I'm playing as a defensive lineman, and press down and circle at the same time or circle and then down after the ball is hiked to try to get to the QB, for some reason my player jumps at the O-Linemans knees. It gets really annoying because my whole pass rush is screwed after that. Has anyone noticed these two things?

It makes it much harder to pass rush...plus it gives the opposition time to throw and I'm not that great at defending passes.

This is kind of bad, I simmed two seasons with UNC.
Season 1: 5-6 (5th in ACC)
Season 2: 2-9 (Second to last in ACC)
While Duke didn't win a game in the conference either season, I got removed from the ACC and replaced by FIU.

I'm in my first offseason and thought I'd share a couple of further thoughts:
1. Setting the budget between recruiting, discipline, and training is a great little addition :)
2. Players leave much more readily :( Actually this is a good thing, but my USC team is getting gutted. I had three great running backs, but I couldn't convince the 2nd or 3rd string half back to cancel their transfers because they weren't getting the ball enough. Also, I lost a very good guard to a transfer. They all are very highly rated and it makes sense they would want more playing time. Also, guys that are top rated guys are more aggressive about entering the draft early when they can. (I wonder if it will make the transfer guys sit out a year.)
3. Recruiting appears to be tougher. I'm needing to be more selective this year even though this year USC is a 6 star team (they were a 5 star team at the beginning of a dynasty last year.) There are only so many points to go around, even at the biggest schools :)
4. I love being able to recruit an "athlete" It's interesting to try to figure out where that 6"5 240 guy might fit in. He has 4.58 speed. WR? TE? Somewhere else?
All-in-all I like the new additions to the offseason and general feel of recruiting more in this year's rendition. :)

In regards to my last post, #2 and #3 are related. I tried very hard to get my 2nd string RB and my star MLB to return to the team. I wasted a lot of points to be told no. You only get 1 attempt to convince them which I like.

Yeah, I recruited at 6'3" 205 lbs Athlete. Figured he would play S or WR, he started at QB half the season since my starting QB got hurt. He was supposed to be a better RB but I already had 2 good Freshman recruits are running backs. This is very cool.

Gotta agree with those who love the position changing. I just recruited the top athlete in the nation. He is 6'5 211 and runs a 4.4. He has a great arm and was a QB in H.S. I don't need a QB this year as I have 4 and he would be 4th on my depth chart. However, I desperately need a CB. So, I can have him as a 78 QB or a 72 overall CB. I make him a CB and after training he is already starting to improve. He will play nickle this year, and I think he will be a star at CB before his career is over.
Also, I enjoy being able to see an approximate discipline rating during the scouting process. I hope it is only an approximate because I just got stuck with a punter who has great skills but I didn't recruit, due to his poor discipline. I recruited a less talented P who was better off the field, but he went to Oklahoma, so this bad boy decided to walk onto my team. It will be interesting to see how much I have to discipline him throughout the year. The tradeoff is his skills make him an 80 overall as a true freshman.

My friend bought the game at Blockbusters and I paid him back for it. He's the store manager and pulled a copy as soon as they came to the local store. Better late than never. Bumped the quarter length to 7 minutes and diff. to AA. Started a dynasty with Georgia. Clubbed Georgia Southern 41-0. I missed 2 field goals and a PAT. Worst kicker on earth. Now playing @ South Caroline. Just took the lead 7-0 with about 1 min to go in the 1st. This game can be tough. My first possesion I got 1 1st down but had to punt. This time I moved the ball fairly well but took 4 runs to get it in when I had 1st and goal from the 3. Love the game.

I love this feature. After playing several seasons though, I'm seeing this far too many times. A mediocre outside linebacker recruit turns into a very good defensive end a large percentage of the time. I've been able to do one every season so far.

I play on AA and bumped my accuracy and receiver catching both up two. With a very good quarterback, I'm completing around fifty-five to sixty percent of my passes which seems about right. Of course, I take some ridiculous chances sometimes. :D

I'm just halfway through simming the 2nd of 4 seasons to get rid of "real" players with numbers only so I can't answer your question Cam.
This year due to my mostly recruiting "good guys" with high offseason scouted discipline ratings, my team discipline rating is an "A" whereas it was a "B" last year. I'm noticing much less need for disciplinary action. Actually, through 7 weeks, I haven't had to discipline even one player!
Unfortunately (actually I think it is really cool), the home field advantage seems to work even when simming. Last year a tough loss in the 4th quarter at Notre Dame cost me a chance for the national championship and an undefeated season. This year, Oregon was listed as one of the top 25 most difficult places to play, and they beat me on their field by a point, ruining my perfect season.
I think it is really cool that it seems to take the home field advantage into sim play. Also, I like that if I recruit "good guys" I can keep the need for discipline down. I just hope that punter doesn't start acting up ;)

Another cool but in this one case annoying feature: I'm pretty sure Matt Leinart just broke his ankle in practice! I might have missed an injury after my last game, but I really don't think I did. I had an off week the week before and I was looking at my injury list and discipline list before the game, as I do every week and I noticed that Leinart is out for the season. Too bad as it was his senior season and he already had 2500 yards passing 21TD's and only 3 interceptions, and looked to be a lock for the Heisman. These stats were with 6 starts, with a more pass heavy emphasis in my sim settings this year (60% pass, 40% run and aggressive play calling up high.) He also had completed just over 70% of his passes.
Anyway, maybe I missed an injury at the end of the last sim, but if guys can get hurt in practice that is just another level of realism that is cool :)

Well after recruiting guys with good discipline (except for that punter), my team managed to only have 1 infraction the entire year! It was just skipping a practice, which got the player a half game suspension from me. No other problems. It will be interesting to see if I can bring in one or two super talents with bad attitude without disrupting the teamwide chemistry or if it will have a more synergistic expression in the game where one bad apple will multiple and bring out other discontents on the team.

Just some random thoughts - I haven't really touched the dynasty mode at all as I just opened the game last night...
I've played only a few games - part of one on Varsity, then I hiked it up to All-American. I REALLY like the home field advantage in the game. Late last night I brought Maryland into Michigan State and we were getting slaughtered. Most of the slaughter was directly related to my shanked punts, but when the crowd in Lansing got fired up, it added an additional level of difficulty for me - it was great! After being down 31-0 at halftime, I decided to call it a night (it was 1am, and I had to wake up with the kids at 5).
I woke up this morning and started thinking about my trouncing at the hands of Mich State. I was kind of worried that AA would just be impossible to play and that I'd have to go back to Varsity (which I found too easy). So, I decided to take Maryland on the road again, but this time to a much easier school (and place to play), UTEP. Unexpectedly, this game was a breeze, as we easily defeated them, 45-0. Therefore, I'm pleased about the level of competition (and I look forward to playing a one-off against Mich State again :) ).
Random musings...
The first two series UTEP ran some kind of sweep to the tailback and though there was no one near him defensively he promptly ran out of bounds for 6 yard losses. I was beginning to become concerned that there was some kind of "Maryland vs. UTEP" bug, but this never happened again.
As others have said, passing is difficult, but I like it.
The only slow downs I've seen are during the cut-aways after a play. I've seen no slow downs in-game.
This game has somehow improved on last year's edition - there will be many "2-hours of sleep" nights in the coming weeks.
Did anyone notice the reference in the manual to the out of town scoreboard during online play? It shows the scores of REAL games as well as the games of your FRIENDS? How cool is that?! Has anyone tested this yet?

For those who are not button-mashers: This game sucks for just coaching. The computer makes horrible decisions for your QB, and he gets shaken up at the drop of a hat. I have turned my sliders all the way to max on accuracy and catching and I still cannot get above a 40% completion rating. I am going to be steaming if I can't find a good slider combo. I have only played cupcake teams with UGA so far, and my offensive stats are very bad. Errrrrr....

I've been considering a dynasty quite a bit. I was thinking that I would wait until the numbers are all out of the system as I don't have the inclination to look up every player's number this year, and Player "QB #3" doesn't make for exciting dynasty reading. However, once I get past the 4 years (hopefully this evening) and have all names I was planning on picking up a dynasty from that point :)

Would someone who is experiencing slowdowns on the Xbox please describe it? I mean, it is just overall sluggishness, or does the game suddenly slow down during certain points of the action?
I've noticed that gameplay is consistently slower on mine compared with the practice mode, but I don't know if I should try for a new disk or if that's just the way the game is. Since it's a consistent speed (i.e. it doesn't slow down during specific actions or plays) it seems to be quite playable.

Just a note - I still play on the PS2, so my comment on slowdowns only occurring after play is stopped may only be for the PS2 version.
On a side note, I pre-ordered the game through amazon.com and had the game on my doorstep Wednesday morning. Today, I had to head to the local Circuit City to get a VCR/DVD combo as our VCR threw up after one too many Veggie Tales/Kid Songs helpings. On a lark, I looked for NCAA 2005 for the PS2 and XBox - they had NO copies available (but plenty of NCAA 2004  ).
Regarding passing...during work hours I've been setting up some matchups and having the game play itself. Passing percentages do seem to be a little low in this mode, though total yardage and scoring seem to be right. I may have to hike up some of the completion sliders, but I'm hoping that doesn't adversely effect the rest of the game and throw it out of balance. I'm trying to get these settings right before I begin any dynasty.

is there anyway to sim 4 years? without your coach being in charge of a team. Then at the end of four years, put him on the team you want em?
Start a dynasty with 2 teams. Have the coach you want to keep quit his job before playing your first game. Then, when you want him to coach after 4 years, just have him sign up for a job.

Pump fakes help the passing out alot IMHO. I just burnt Tennessee with a pump fake, the LB bit on it and allowed me to throw it over the middle to my WR who had the CB beat on a slant.

Looking foward to it!

Thanks :)
Also in regards to the latest posts in this thread, I love having the pump fake being controlled by the right stick.
