All that talk about a Yamato-like battleship and it turns out to be a skimpy little destroyer escort...

While the Yamato may have an 18 inch gun, the 5 incher of a DE will take care of most jobs.

True, as long as bad navigation, poor target identification, a dud torpedo, or a premature shell burst doesn't sink your chances.

And we both know that DEs are best known for their escort services. ;)

A DE can find a spot in any port. The Yamato can only use the most established and largest ports.

Could Yamato fit through the Panama Canal?
Maybe, if this were Star Blazers. It would just fly over it, or blast it with the Wave Motion GunŽ.
