View Full Version : OT: I bought a guitar

For the last few years I have been wanting to learn how to play guitar just for myself so today I went to Guitar Center with a friend of mine that knows alot about them.
I was looking for something that would be inexpensive in case I gave up in frustration and passed my friend's inspection as far as construction. Well I tested a few Fenders, Gibsons and Epiphones and a couple other brands in the $100-300 price range. I decided on a Squire Strat which was $160 out the door. It is red with a red headstock and a rosewood fingerboard (see I am learning already). I had them put some heavier strings on it and they adjusted some stuff all for free.
Anyways, even though I have pretty big hands this one felt the best for the two chords (sp?) I know. My friend gave me a small Marshall practice amp that is quite loud. He was quite impressed with the workmanship of my guitar for the price though he said eventually I should put some new pickups and tuners on it. He actually bought one himself for practice which made me feel good about it (he plays in a band).
Look out Jimi Hendrix I am coming for you! :D

Squire Strats were actually introduced as Billy Squire's signature guitar back in the 80s. I record, so let's make an album.

Take your worst moment playing guitar and multiply it by ten and that is me.
I must admit it is fun cranking up the amp and trying to look cool despite making absolute noise.

My first electric was a Squire Strat and I agree with your friend that it is a good guitar to start with. They have a good tone to them and have good action. For the price it is a nice guitar.

We had a Squire Strat sitting at the studio (was signed by Billy when he was at our studio). We tended to pull it out of storage from time to time. It actually saved a lot of sessions. It was always in tune, and it intonated well. It was a good guitar to have ready with a strange tuning, just in case.
I had a Squire P-Bass when I was in junior high.

Hurst, you're a recording engineer? Mind if I ask how you got started in the whole thing? I'm sort of pursuing that as a career goal (playing guitar for 9 yrs, bass and piano for about 2) and I write my own stuff too. Just wondering if I would be better off trying to be a musician, or the guy behind the scenes.

Yes I am an engineer...full time career.
I was gonna respond, but then I saw that you have a "Def Leppard Sucks" signature. What a shame....
Just kidding. I won't hold it against you. Drop me an email:

I will fill you in on the steps that got me where I am today. Also, feel free to look at the 2 studios I work out of.

3 chords could be a decent song, but with 4 we could have a hit on our hands. just make sure we don't forget the cowbell.

No really, going from 2 to 3 is a 33% return. Anybody who tells you different is just after my 17%! Erm, I mean the imaginary 17% for people who do "New Maths" and -think- you're getting a 50% return. Honest, they're wrong!

God help you if you try and play in tune with me.
I play the bass, poorly, by ear only. I basically keep a beat and throw in a few random things every once in awhile. Sometimes they sound passable, most of the time I cringe at myself.
And let's not start at how god awful I am at the guitar. :)

So we have like 3 guitars, CW himself at the bass, Senator at the drums, with a harmonica and a skin flute for extra fun!
Yessir. Look out music world, Band From Hell That Sounds Like Hell is coming!
Count on me as your band's fan if you play metal :)
I started to play guitar 8 years ago, after a year formed my first band with some friends just for fun and to make noise. Now we have openend for some the biggest Spanish metal/rock bands at some big festiballs and i trust me, that worths every minute of frustration at first when you start to play. So never give up, just play, play, read books, read guitar forums etc. you will get addicted soon.
Btw, below is my favourite guitar/music forum, but be carefull, you could get addicted as me and it could be so expensive as there you will read about the great stuff everybody is buying, i own now 3 guitars, two big 100 watts ampliffiers, 1 small 30watts ampliffier and 1 effects pedalboard :)

Those were the ones. :D I also got down E and A, so that is 5 now. I actually got through a version of Comfortably Numb though I kept messing up.
Thanks for the link Icy!

Is that what the "m" stands for? If so I got those too sort of. They are like one fret difference from the regular E and A.

the coolest free music program I've seen is powertab (http://www.power-tab.net/) - there are tons of song files available for it (and, generally, of pretty good quality). as you get more experience, transcribing either your own material, or songs from other artists, is a GREAT learning tool.
