View Full Version : A Novice FOF2k4 Dynasty

I call this a novice dynasty because I have basically no in-depth football knowledge. What I do know I learned here for the most part. I will use v5.1a, Wall Street level. My team will be the Miami Dolphins. I will sim 2004 and start 2005 with an "empty cupboard" style team. My only house rule to start is no trading players in the last year of their contract unless the AI initiates the trade. I am trying this out in hopes it increases my attachment to my team to chronicle it this way, but with a little luck somebody else will enjoy reading this.

I’d like to find an equivalent scout with a higher young talent rating since I’m starting from scratch, but there isn’t one available. I’d also like to replace OC MacPherson and that poor rating in running backs, but the only available better option has a $3.5 million/year offer after the first round and I don’t think a team doomed to losing seasons for 3-4 years needs to pay that much for an OC.

Early Free Agency:

Per empty cupboard rules I cannot participate this year.

Draft:

Thanks to a poor season in 2004, I draft 11th in all rounds. In my first look at the draft pool, one player catches my eye: Cedric Ruff, a WILB rated at 47/86. Linebackers rated in the 80's are very rare, and I wonder if my scout is just that far off. Ruff's combine scores (4.60 dash, 38 solecismic, 32 strength, 7.12 agility) say otherwise, however. But, I have needs in all positions and plenty of quality is available in this draft, so I elect to just sit at #11 and see what falls to me.

Round 1: and lo and behold, Ruff is still available. I take him without hesitation.

Round 2: I had my eye on Michael Henry TE 54/74 (dash 4.82 solecismic 34 strength 35 agility 7.42) and he is still there. I pick him and convert him to a 41/65 FB.

Round 3: Another guy I was watching, C Brad Strong 40/52 (dash 5.06 solecismic 33, strength 35 agility 7.75). Drops to 39/50 after draft.

Round 4: Can’t believe this guy is still left: Lenny Santana TE 35/67 (dash 4.28 sole 29 str 24 agil 7.20). Drops slightly to 34/66.

Round 5: Time to look for a bargain QB. Out of several with potential I select Norm Hastings 11/52 (dash 4.57 sole 39 str 10 agil 7.41), final call based on his high solecismic rating.

Round 6: My second choice QB is still there, Eric Branch 15/49 (dash 4.51 sole 22 str 20 agil 7.44). Liked his freakish strength. Drops to 15/46.

Round 7: Possibly the steal of the draft, WILB Luke Berry 27/49 (dash 4.78 sole 41 str 23 agil 7.46). Why he was still there in round 7 I don’t understand.

The draft rating gives me a B-.

Late Free Agency:

I sign a bunch of roster fillers.

Please bear with me on the formatting as I tinker around and figure out how to make it look better.

2005 Season

This season holds little promise, of course. The Dolphins’ goal for 2005 is to win at least one game. For the fans, the only real item of interest: Can SILB Ruff, as the only player currently rated good on the defense, set some tackling records?

Results:

Good News:

Obviously, a two-win season was twice as good as I hoped. At one point, we were at .500 ;).

7th round pick WILB Luke Berry was a big surprise, with 129 tackles, 40 assists, 1 sack, 1 int, and Defensive Rookie of the Year honors.

First round pick SILB Cedric Ruff did not disappoint, with 109 tackles, 49 assists, 1 sack, and 1 int.

QB Norm Hastings performed passably well for a rookie QB with no offensive line, going 216/401 for 2270 yards, 9 TD, and 12 INT, while enduring 35 sacks.

CB Adrien Samuels stepped up with 5 INT, 6 passes defensed, and 59 tackles.

Bad News:

The loud sucking sound in Miami was us. There were several games where we didn’t make 250 yds total offense.

FB Michael Henry missed six games with two minor injuries. I’m afraid he’s going to be one of those guys who never has a complete season. He also averaged 3.64 yds/rush.

Henry’s yds/rush was the highest of our regular rushers.

Next year will probably be more of the same, as there will still be essentially no free agents available to me under empty cupboard rules. However, I do have the #1 overall draft pick, and I will likely trade down for more picks.

Good luck, hope you have fun! You should be able to make some good trades with #1 pick.

I have a request for help from someone knowledgeable. I am doing these posts in Wordperfect then copy/pasting them into the reply box. When I do this I lose all bolding, underlining, centering, etc. I need to be able to save my posts in progress (for various reasons) so I have to use Wordperfect or something similar. Am I doing something wrong, or is there some other way to do this that I haven't thought of?

2006 Preseason

We begin this season with modest goals. I would like to upgrade my scout, and possibly my OC as well. Since the only position I really have locked in is MLB (and I’ve got two good ones) I will be going with best available in the draft. The only FA’s available to me in the early round will be undrafted 2nd year men , so there is only a slim chance of a significant FA signing. My embarrassment of riches at MLB gives me an interesting decision. I don’t really need 2 good MLBs at this stage of my team’s development, and I think Luke Berry probably hade a fluke season. He looks solid but not spectacular according to the scout. If I can’t sign him to a long contract for cheap, I am considering trading him for draft choices while the memory of his Defensive RotY is still fresh. If I get a better scout I’ll look at his new ratings and re-evaluate. Lastly, I’ll trade down in the 1st round of the draft as many times as I can and still get an impact player.

Staff Hiring

No better scout is available. I make offers to a head coach and an OC. I am outbid by 1.5 million on the head coach and 650k on the OC, so 2006 begins with the same staff as last year.

Ticket Prices

Due to my low payroll, the Fins made $87 million last year. I leave ticket prices unchanged, hoping to buy back some of the fan loyalty I am losing because we stink.

Early Free Agency

As expected, no significant improvements to my feeble team are available here.

Contract Extensions

SLB David Bernstein 15/40, an RFA, signs a 2-yr, 840k contract.

Draft

The draft is weak this year. Lots of OL guys, a couple DL guys at the top, and 3 QB’s with potential in the yellow range (highest is 74).At this point I don’t want to use a round 1 pick on a lineman. The potential standout to my eye is RB Carlton McMurdo 55/59 sole 42 dash 4.55 str 15 agil 7.22. He has low volatility and his bars look good. He will likely be my target, but I am going to stick to my plan of trading down as many times as I can to get more picks.

I trade pick 1(1) to Tampa for 1(4), 1st & 4th rds in 2007, and 1st rd in 2008.

I then trade 1(4) to Tennessee for 1(12), 2(12), and 7(12). I was pretty disappointed in the lack of interest in my 1(4) pick. I’ll stop here and take what falls to pick 12.

1(12): My plan has fizzled. Lots of good OL guys left and a couple QBs whose bars I don’t like. We gamble and take WR Carlton Plumb 23/54 dash 4.47 sole 20 str 22 agil 6.76. Plumb’s very high (83) volatility and extraordinary combine scores give me hopes of a breakout. He drops to 21/53 after being picked.

2(1): CB Curtis Mahoney 27/61 dash 4.45 sole 23 str 19 agil 7.00. Best non-lineman left.

2(12): Another gamble: S Kendall Carlson 29/52 dash 4.47 sole 22 str 24 agil 7.23. There was several S left with higher potential, but Carlson was the fasted and strongest by a fair bit. I hope to see his ratings climb as well.

3(1): C Orlando McKnight 23/65 dash 5.10 sole 27 str 43 agil 7.75. I have a good C but this guy has good combine scores and way better bars.

4(1): T Vincent Mason 17/46 dash 5.25 sole 32 str 34 agil 7.57

5(1): OLB Barry Codeke 17/41 dash 4.57 sole 29 str 18 agil 7.72. High pass rush technique & play recognition, moderate pass rush strength, 239 lbs. I will use him as a pass rusher out of position at DE, unless a position change will raise his stats.

6(1): QB George Carpenter 14/51 dash 4.69 sole 31 str 13 agil 7.72. Seemed to be the best bet for sneaking a late round QB steal, but drops to 13/48 after being picked.

7(1): CB David Krawczyk 18/40 dash 4.45 sole 16 str 17 agil 6.96. Good bars, good combine scores. Worth a last-round shot for sure. Jumps to 19/43 post-draft.

7(12): MLB Grady Delaroche 20/44 dash 4.81 sole 24 str 24 agil 7.51. I’ve got too many MLBs, but Grady was by far the most likely pick remaining. I’ll try him at OLB probably.

This year I get a C+ for the draft.

Late Free Agency

C Aaron Brock 14/44 - changed to LG 14/45

P Richard Gillespie 29/57 - upgrade

K Steve Place 34/50 - ditto

CB Riddock Westbrook 9/36 - high potential in INT and play recognition

RB Jon Booker 25/32 - solid backup RB

TE Matthew Benton 25/45

DT Kirk Hurtado 9/31 - has potential as a pure run-stopper

RB Joe Petruzziello 17/35 - no speed whatsoever, but a better power runner and reciever out of the backfield than anybody I have. Will likely start.

Training Camp

OLB Barry Codeke drops to 17/36

QB George Carpenter drops to 15/44

CB David Krawczyk rises to 23/48

WR Carlton Plumb up to 25/59

Edit: Gee, I have a big font. I'll get this sorted out someday.

Even with low expectations, this season was a disappointment. We were wracked with minor injuries; I may have to get a new head coach with a higher Injury rating. My best QB was rated 51.1, nobody averaged over 3.78 YPC, and as a team we took 53 sacks, tied for the league high. The only bright spots were (again) on defense. SILB Cedric Ruff had a league-high 154 tackles, 59 assists, 2 sacks, 3 hurries, and 2 INT, and was named Defensive PotY and All-League 1st Team ILB. WILB Luke Berry had 105 tackles, 38 assists, 1 sack, 1 blocked pass, and 1 hurry. SS Kendall Carson was Defensive RotY, with 67 tackles, 26 assists, 1 hurry, and 1 INT. I do have the top draft pick (again) next year, and will have access to some free agents for the first time. Next season will be time to sit down and weigh my options and choose a direction for this team.

FL Cris Zardiackis 20/27 - RFA, 2 yrs min. salary. 52 in punt return, 48/53 in kick return

A review of available free agents shows some solid players but no stars. The best player available is a 50/53 MLB (of course). There is nobody here to build a team around. So, with picks 1(1) and 1(4) (thanks, Tampa!), I will look to the draft for a couple key pieces and begin to focus primarily on either offense or defense according to who I find. But first...

Room under cap: $79,930,000

Max for new players: $70, 130,000

Signings:

WLB Peter Bohannon 27/39 - 2 yrs, 1.47mil - pass rush specialist
SS Deron Torres 29/50 - 2 yrs, 1.36mil - will likely start

DT Calvin Bennink 30/48 - 2 yrs, 1.36mil - will start
DT Jumbo Ogden 24/44 - 2 yrs, 1.36mil - will be a good pass rusher someday (hopefully soon)
WLB Ronald Nichols 41/54 - 2 yrs, 1.47mil - will start
FB Tony Jennings 39/47 - 2 yrs, 1.15mil - great run blocking, good receiving

The Draft

If I can find a stud QB or RB, I will focus on building our offense. Otherwise, D is king. Looking at the draft, I see two roughly equivalent RB’s: Bill Preston 66/70 dash 4.50 str 27 agil 7.19 and Ray Butler 57/68 dash 4.41 str 30 agil 7.08. Preston has 67 volatility and Butler 53; Butler has better combine scores, Preston has a better rating. Either looks to do fine as a marquee back. For QB’s, there are 4 with potential in the 60's & 70's, but two stand out. Marvin Dawkins 32/76 dash 4.72 sole 42 str 14 agil 7.23 volatility VL. He has good scores, the highest potential, and that VL vol almost guarantees he will perform as advertised. But... QB Brad Dunn 14/60 dash 4.59 sole 46 str 24 agil 7.16 vol H. Dunn has the highest combine scores of all QB’s in sole, str, and agil, and is 7th in the dash. With that high vol, he looks like a breakout star. Looking at the needs of the teams with picks 1(2) and 1(3), I choose to gamble slightly and trade with Buffalo for 1(3) and their 1st in 2008 and 2009. At 1(3), all 4 of my guys remain. I trade 1(3) to Minnesota for 1(5) and 2(5). Minnesota, whose #1 need was a QB, trades the pick to StL, who drafts a DL. I trade 1(4) to Seattle for 1(8) and 2nd rd next year. I trade 1(5) to San Fran for 1(9) and 2nd rnd in 2009. They trade their pick to StL (?), who draft a T. Finally at 1(6), Pittsburg takes QB Dawkins. With pick 1(8), I take QB Dunn. Dunn jumps to 15/69 immediately; a good sign.

Looking over the draft situation, I think I can trade down three or four picks and still get one of the RB’s, and maybe still pick either one. I am feeling a bit guilty, however, about all these trades, and wonder if I have been exploiting the AI. I decide just to draft Preston at 1(9); he seems the better pick of the two.

The rest of the draft:

2(1) CB Jake Jeans 24/64 - the cover corner we lack - maybe, drops to 24/61
2(5) FB Jimmie Faneca 43/75 - best FB I’ve seen in any draft so far
3(1) WR Oscar Springer 26/49 - very good combine scores- took a gamble - jumps to 27/52
4(1) K Lawrence Heffner-Liddiard 45/73 - need one of these
4(4) P Donnell Baxter 34/74 - need one of these also
5(1) ILB Austin Heuring 29/54 - don’t need him, but picking is getting slim...
6(1) QB Kenneth Bailey 23/52 - see above
7(1) TE Herb Herndon 21/44 - ditto

We are graded at C- for the draft, lowest of anybody. TE Herb Herndon jumps to 34/56 post draft. QB Brad Dunn drops to 10/50 (*@#$!). I probably won’t even sign him now because he’ll want too much. Everyone else holds steady. Looks like Bill Preston has just become the focus of the team.

2007 Late Free Agency

QB Dan Kaye 30/45 - Started 2 seasons for TN, 75.2 rating - will be my starter :(

ILB Antoine Clark 53/54 - signed 3yrs cheap - somebody will have to move to OLB

FS Mercury Tucker 40/44 - another last round cheapo

We also resigned a bunch of our RFA’s at or near min salary.

Post-Camp

FL Oscar Springer rises to 31/57 with 99/99 in big-play receiving; makes me wish we had a QB

QB Brad "Yo-Yo" Dunn is now 11/56. I say screw it and sign him - I’ve got the cap room. He will start every down and sink or swim.

I trade our old buddy WILB Luke Berry & next year’s 7th rounder to Tampa for rookie RT Kent Schultz 16/45.

2007 Regular Season

Draft

I have picks 1(4) (thanks again, Tampa - wow, was that a lucky trade!), 1(15), and 1(20). The draft offers a spectacular T and a spectacular CB. There are 3 other solid T’s, and quite a few other solid players. The first three picks do not list T as a primary need, and all can meet at least one need with a top tier draftee. I say "What the heck" and wait to see who’s left at 1(4). And the stud tackle goes 1(1).

5(15) C CJ Kerr 19/51 - might switch to G or T

6(15) DT Leo Belzer 15/46 - a gamble on decent bars and high volatility

I get a B+ on the draft. RT Barber drops to 24/61. FB Max Green jumps to 43/79. DT Fisher makes big jump to 23/57. DT Belzer drops to 14/41.

nice dynasty

you doing your own depth chart and gameplans?

randal7

Depth chart, yes. The coach does not like to put low current/high future rating guys in enough to make me happy. Right now I let the coach do the whole gameplan. In a year or two when I hope to contend, I will tweak the coach's recommendations.

2009 Season

Notes:

MLB Cedric Ruff has dropped to 63/64 (20 freaking points!) upon his recovery from injury

Staff Hiring

I decide to stay the course here.

Early Free Agency

Room Under Cap: $44.78mil

Available for new player: $35.5mil

This is where I always get in trouble in a career. I have a solid team, primarily needing only experience. But I have all this money available, and lots of potential upgrades in the FA pool. I am going to try to control myself and work with the people I have and try to build cohesion.

Dolphin FA’s:

TE Lenny Santana 61/62 - he only caught 3 passes last year. Unless his price drops, he walks.

LCB David Krawczyk 56/56 - I’d like to keep him, but his replacement when he was hurt did fine, so he’ll probably walk, too.

SE Marty Konkler 51/51 - 1500 yds in 2 seasons as a Dolphin - I’ll try to keep him, tho at some point I’m going to have to pare my receiver corps down.

Signings:

My main needs are a QB and a 2nd/3rd CB. The best CB available is Krawczyk, by a fair margin, and he wants too freaking much. I will look to the draft, where several adequate CB’s lurk. QB Kyle Tubbs 69/69 is the only significant QB in the pool; he wants about $53mil for 5yrs. Dunn is now rated at 33/60, so the potential is not that much less. I decide to just wait and see what kind of offers Tubbs gets. The draft is not an option for QB, as there isn’t a star caliber QB there.

C Orlando McKnight 49/66 signs a 4yr/$11mil contract, extending him 3yrs.

SS Kendall Carlson 53/53 signs a 3yr/$3.9mil contract, extending 2yrs

RG Bill Assanie 30/43 3yr/$2.69mil - 2yr ext

LDT Calvin Fisher 34/65 5yrs/$12.03mil - 3yr ext

SE Monty Konkler re-signs, 3yr/$5.12mil

TE Richard Niederhiser 30/54, 3yr/$2.01mil

Other Signings of Note:

QB Tubbs signs a 6yr/$73mil deal with Jacksonville

TE Santana signs a 3yr/$4mil deal with Buffalo

Draft

I have pick #14, as well as 1(13), 2(8), and 4(31). I don’t see anybody to trade up for, so I’ll just sit and wait.

1(13) CB Kerry Poole 24/72 4.45dash 17str 6.97agil - fills one of my main needs

1(14) OLB Alonzo Lunsford 35/62 4.39dash 31str 7.07agil - too good to pass up

2(8) G Deion Stark 14/61 4.94dash 33str 7.96agil - good combine scores

2(14) QB Lenny Burton 20/52 4.65dash 40sole 10str 7.39agil - still trying here

3(14) TE Kelvin Reeg 27/57 4.88dash 38str 7.44agil - VH volatility - looking for a breakout

4(14) QB William Buckhalter 6/50 4.80dash 41sole 15str 7.80agil - still looking for a breakout

4(31) DT Brandon Barrett 21/42 4.96dash 30str 7.87agil

5(14) S Tommy Cabrera 21/42 4.57dash 17str 7.64agil

6(14) QB Brant Best 15/51 4.86dash 31sole 10str 7.91agil

7(14) QB Harold Idler 9/49 4.74dash 31sole 13str 7.85agil

My draft is graded B+. I think it was mostly wasted; many of these guys won’t make the cut.

Late Free Agency

RB Bruce Henry 35/38 re-signs 3yrs/$2.43mil

WR Kris Zardiackis 24/27 re-signs 3yrs/$2.28mil

DT Jumbo Ogden 35/40 re-signs 3yrs/$2.49mil

ILB Carlos Webber 31/40 re-signs 3yrs/$2.28mil

OLB Peter Bohannon 32/37 re-signs 3yrs/$2.28mil

ILB Marshall Baggett 48/63 3yrs/$2.46mil

ILB Luke Berry 44/49 3yrs/$2.43mil - our old friend is back! This is a pureley sentimental signing. I felt bad for trading him a couple years ago. I now have a serious excess at MLB, so it will be interesting to try and keep them all.

2009 Regular Season

Wk. 1 - Miami 30, Buffalo 15 - QB Dunn 22/34 268 2TD 0INT, RB Preston 26/100

Wk. 8 - Indy 31, Miami 10 - QB Dunn 15/30 177 1TD 1INT - Dunn strains a foot ligament and is out for 3wks

Wk. 9 - bye

At the halfway point we are 6-2, in 2nd behind New Jersey, who we are yet to play. QB Dunn has a QB rating of 101.5. Looks like he may finally be maturing.

Wk. 10 - Houston 24, Miami 23 - QB Hastings 18/40 212 1TD 1INT

Wk. 11 - Miami 28, NJ 24 - with the return of QB Dunn, we are back on track with a big win. He goes 19/28 207 1TD 0INT

Wk. 12 - Miami 20, Carolina 17 OT - QB Dunn 24/42 259 2TD 1INT, WR Springer 6rec/115 - LT Will Banks 65/73 out until late 2010 (%*&!) with a MCL injury. He’s the lynchpin of our OL; this bodes ill for the season.

Wk. 13 - Cleveland 23, Miami 21 - QB Dunn 28/43 398 2TD INT, FB Faneca 8rec/108, WR Springer 5rec/105 - FB Green 69/79 goes down with another MCL; fortunately we have a capable backup here

Wk. 14 - Atlanta 7, Miami 3 - QB Dunn 13/30 116 0TD 0INT - NJ wins, so we are 3 games out with 3 to go

Wk. 15 - Miami 23, NE 17 - QB Dunn 27/39 310 1TD 0INT - NJ wins, so we cannot win the division

Wk. 16 - NO 35, Miami 27 - QB Dunn 28/42 329 3TD INT - Fl Springer 62/64 goes down with a broken tibia, and SE Plumb 50/58 is out with an abdominal strain. We are forced to reactive SE Konkler, who is not fully recovered from his broken clavicle.

Wk. 17 - Miami 28, NJ 22 - QB Dunn comes through with a big game and gets us in the playoffs, going 25/31 240 4TD 0INT

At 10-6, not a bad season. Considering we beat the conference champs twice, I feel like we should have gone farther in the playoffs. With Dunn coming into his own, next year we should contend.

Season Highlights:

QB Dunn had an excellent year, named 2nd team all-pro. He was 331/514 3886 27TD 8INT 98.2rating.

RB Preston turned in a solid year, 297rush/1160 and 45rec/400, with 11TD combined.

FB Jimmie Faneca had a big year at TE, 83rec/1026 5TD, and 1st team all-pro again

SS Torres had 6INT and 48tackles

2010 Season
I am forced to raise ticket prices about 10%. We were lowest in the league, and profits were down close to break-even.

FB Max Green, upon recovery from his injury, is now rated 37/47 and average in all respects. His backup was a good blocker, but little else. I want to keep FB Faneca at TE where he has been highly successful, so I need help here. Another concern is LT Will Banks who still has 10wks to recover from his MCL injury. I fear his skills will drop as well. Otherwise, I have no serious needs and will focus on re-signing players without contracts.

Early Free Agency

Extensions:

QB Hastings, 2yrs, to 2012

FB Henry, 2yrs, to 2012

SE Konkler - 1 yr, out to 2012

SE Plumb - 1yr, out to 2011

RG Stevenson - 2yrs, to 2012

RT Schultz - 2yrs, to 2012

RFA RT Poor - 3yrs, $2.42mil

MLB Ruff - 3yrs to 2012, $15mil total for 4yrs

SS Torres signs 5yr/$19.92mil extension out to 2014

FS Kramer 2yr/min salary ext out to 2012

After extensions, we have $32.34mil available for salaries. The FA pool has no FB or QB of high caliber. I will look for a lineman offered less than his real worth.

Signings:

C Freddie Morris 30/42 returns with a 3yr/$2.85 mil deal

S Mercury Tucker 44/50 re-signs, 3yrs/$4.84mil

DT Kendall Schlecht 43/46 is back for 3 more, $5.22 mil

LT Vincent Mason 48/48 resigns, 4yrs, $12.24mil

DE Lincoln Hughes 42/42 stays with us, 3yrs/$5.9mil - he

CB Adrian Samuels 40/41 also stays, 3yrs/$4.8mil

RG Cory Burns 53/56 3yrs/$6.24mil - has started for us for 3yrs and not missed a game

DE JR Nkwenti 46/56 3yrs/$4.13mil - cheap and will start

WLB Will Lohner 46/51 3yrs/$2.79mil - cheap and will enable me to cut a disgruntled guy with a conflict

Draft

This will be a weak draft. Except... one of the best QB’s I’ve seen, at least on paper, is available: Donald Reese 16/79 4.52dash 51sole 25str 7.07agil 33volatility. Wow. I can’t give Baltimore enough to get their 1(1) pick, so I trade this year’s 1(26) & 2(26), as well as our 1st rounders in 2011 & 2012 to NE for 1(2). Then I trade 1(2), MLB Marshall Baggett 53/63, and QB Brad Dunn 50/64 for 1(1) and 4(1). Baggett was my #3 MLB anyway, but we had a lot invested in Dunn. Reese better pan out or I just screwed the team for a few years.

1(1) the aforementioned Donald Reese

3(26) QB Calvin Frederick12/60 4.69dash 42sole 21str 7.45agil 90vol - nothing left I need, so I try for insurance - Frederick jumps 4 points after being drafted

4(1) LT Alfred Kennedy 15/46 - not too appealing, but we have a hole here

4(26) TE Duane Patton 20/53 - good blocker, good numbers

5(26) QB Van Bernstein 11/60 - if he’s still left this late we might as well try him out

6(26) TE Heath Patterson 21/46 - strong & fast for a TE - jumps 5 points

7(26) SILB Mitchell Paige 11/39 - might make a situational pass rusher out of him

Post draft, Reese shows 16/77 and Frederick shows 17/78  . Reese’s bars are a little better. LT Kennedy jumps to 19/53. Along with TE Patterson, that’s 3 guys who jump 5 or more points. Pretty good draft, I’d say. Draft review grades me a B+.

2010 Late Free Agency

FB Jimmie Faneca, exploiting his 2-yr reign as 1st team all-pro, holds out for more money. With Max Green’s ratings drop, Faneca has the leverage to make these demands. I sign him to a 3yr extension, out to 2013, for $18.4mil total.

CB Curtis Mahoney re-signs for 3yrs/min salary - once the #1CB, injuries have reduced him to #5 and I only kept him because he has been with us since 2006.

After some consideration, I extend LG Walter Kozlowski out to 2013 with a 4-yr/$13.5mil contract. This would have been his last year, but at 57/57 I decided he will be the future here.

DE Benjamin Saturday 35/66 signs a 3yr/$3.18mil contract - without intending to, it looks like I will start 2 new guys at DE this year.

Post-Camp

QB Frederick is now rated 21/81 (up 21pts since the draft!), and QB Reese is 20/75. Frederick is now clearly has the better skills (even counting that his kick holding is 40pts higher), so Reese and his frickin’ 24mil bonus will be trade bait soon. And in another bit of good news, QB Norm Hastings, who was our starter way back in 2005, has become a mentor this year. At least for the moment, the future looks good.

2010 Regular Season

I look over the rosters of the teams in our division and it looks like another second place finish for us. We have one of the strongest rosters in the league, with the most depth. The Jets, however, have better starters overall and almost as much depth. Looks like a wild-card again for us, unless Frederick really takes off.

After preseason, I trade QB Bo Schneider 24/54 and DE Bo Corns 48/48 to Tampa for next year’s 2nd round pick. I trade FB Max Green 39/46 and DE Dana McKnight 45/46 and next year’s 7th rounder to St. Louis for next year’s 2nd rounder.

And we begin the season with our LG, RT and FL all out with various injuries. On the plus side, LT Will Banks will apparently suffer no loss of skill from his injury when he returns in 5 wks.

Wk. 1 - Miami 13, NE 10 - QB Frederick goes 15/29 158 1TD 1INT in his debut

Wk. 2 - Chicago 20, Miami 19 - RB Preston 25/103, SE McDaniel 5 rec/100yrds

Wk. 3 - San Diego 14, Miami 13 - QB Frederick 16/27 150 1TD 2INT

Wk. 4 - Miami 24, Cincinnati 14 - QB Frederick 18/29 139 1TD 2INT, RB Preston 27/153

Wk. 5 - Miami 10, Buffalo 7 - QB Frederick 23/31 231 1TD 1INT

Wk. 6 - Miami 28, Cleveland 13 - QB Frederick 11/18 92 1TD 1INT, RB Preston 28/227 3TD!

Wk. 7 - Miami 24, Pittsburg 16 - Frederick is 21/29 213 1TD 1INT over previously unbeaten foe - RB Preston ruptures an elbow tendon and is out for the season - so far he was 155/780 5.03ypc 7TD and 136yds rec

Wk. 8 - bye

Wk. 9 - NE 26, Miami 8 - the lack of a running game seems to have hurt us - I move FB Faneca from TE to #1RB - time to earn that big raise

At the midpoint we are 5-3 and ½ game ahead of NJ and NE

Wk. 10 - Miami 23, Baltimore 17 - QB Frederick 21/34 193 3TD 1INT

Wk. 11 - Miami 23, NJ 15 - FB Faneca 20/106, QB Frederick 18/27 154 1TD 1INT

Wk. 12 - Miami 43, Minnesota 31 - big win over previously 10-0 MN - Frederick is 24/40 255 1TD 1INT

Wk. 13 - Houston 31, Miami 10 - we follow up with a loss to mediocre Houston - they ran for 224 yards and Frederick threw 3INT

Wk. 14 - Miami 27, Detroit 15 - QB Frederick 17/24 221 3TD 1INT 5rush/87yds(!)

Wk. 15 - Miami 21, NJ 10 - Frederick 21/26 203 2TD 0INT FB Faneca 14/94

Wk. 16 - Miami 31, GB 14 - Frederick 15/24 171 1TD 0INT

Wk. 17 - Buffalo 28, Miami 21 - ugh

We win the division at 11-5, but are seeded third and get no bye.

Season Wrap-up

QB Frederick was rated 42/81 at season’s end, going 280/445 3020 20TD 18INT 80.9rate, plus running 69/369

CB Jake Jeans tied for 1st in the league with 7INT, and had 53tackles and 8defn

Bill Preston led the team in rushing despite going out in game 7. We still ranked #1 in rushing yards and #4 in ypc.

QB Calvin Frederick was ORotY. FB Jimmie Faneca captured his third straight 1st team all-pro FB. OLB Alonzo Lunsford was 2nd team all-pro.

2011 Preseason

2011 starts with wonderful news: RB Bill Preston has recovered from his elbow injury, and his ratings have dropped from 69/70 to 43/45. I can see where an arm injury might affect pass-catching ability or tendency to fumble (although he still is rated 92 in Avoid Drops), but how does it drop his hole recognition from 82/84 to 30? The saddest part is, he remains my best RB. We might need to work on this during preseason.

Early Free Agency

Looking at the draft, I only see real ball-control-type RB, and without a 1st round pick I don’t know if I can trade up to get him. I will have to try and get somebody in FA, then.

Dolphin Free Agents of Note:

FL Oscar Springer 68/68 - Oscar wants $16mil/yr, and I can’t touch that

CB Jake Jeans 55/59 - led league in INT last year - he wants about $5mil/yr - my other LCB wants $7mil/yr to extend - I will try to re-sign Jeans

Contract Extensions:

RB Preston signs a 1yr extension to 2012 and takes a big pay hit in exchange for not being cut

SLB Austin Heuring extends to 2012

CB Jake Jeans stays with us, 4yrs/$20.38mil

Signings:

C Ernest Ferguson 53/61 3yrs/$4.31mil - saw he was going for cheap, so I snagged him - I’ll fit him in somewhere

Draft:

2(13) FB BJ Wilkins 36/64 - good blocker, receiver

2(14) FL Maurice Prior 23/55

3(27) C Harold Wynn 19/69 - good combine - will switch to G

4(27) G Hugh Tierney 16/46 - good combine, but if he doesn’t break out, he’ll be cut

5(27) K Ike Cooley 54/77 - need one

6(27) P Les Bullock 25/62 - need one of these also

Our draft is graded A-

Late Free Agency:

FB Brant Bloedorn 78/78 4yrs/$9.7mil - makes BJ Wilkins a wasted draft pick

RB Ray Butler 44/44 4yrs/$10.33mil - this was the guy I passed over to draft Preston - looks like he didn’t quite pan out as expected, but his running skills are still pretty good

2011 Regular Season
