Seriously- this show is hilarious. I wish I hadnt missed the first season -its laugh out loud funny, and without descending solely and wholely to the "humor" we've come to associate with sitcoms. Im curious if there are any other fans of the show around here...

Know this is a bit late, but I just rented the first season on DVD and watched an episode for the first time ever.
Could be the funniest show I've ever watched, great show.
The one line that sticks out in my mind and had me laughing for 10 minutes was the one George Michael said about needing the leather jacket for when he was on his hog and needed to go into a controlled slide. That kid is great.

from imdb.com
LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Fox Broadcasting Co. plans to shuffle its Sunday comedy lineup in May to make room for the addition of new cartoon "American Dad" on May 1.
As part of the schedule change, the network has opted to reduce the episode order on the Emmy-winning ratings laggard "Arrested Development," but the specifics still are being worked out.
As of May 1, "American Dad" will slide into "Arrested's" 8:30 p.m. slot behind "The Simpsons." For the first three weeks of the month, "Dad" will be followed at 9 p.m. by another original "Simpsons" episode.

Bah, the goal should be as many GOOD episodes of Arrested Development. For example look at the best British shows. I'm glad that there was more time to develop each episode of Blackadder. It allows it to survive better over time. I'd like to watch Arrested Development DVDs 5 years from now and realize all of the episodes were great and there was no stinker in the bunch!

The quote in my sig is from one of the first AD episodes I watched (was on about a month ago).

Easy Mac
02-11-2005, 07:58 AM
cause people don't watch it? (and yes, I enjoy it)
Does anyone else think TiVo and the like are hurting some shows in the ratings? I know the shows I TiVo are shows my girl generally doesn't enjoy, so I just record them and watch what she does. I Tivo AD and the Simpsons, while we watch Extreme Home Makeover and Desp. Housewives (she controls the remote if there's no sports I want to watch on). I tape Scrubs so we can watch house. I trade Lost for that 70's show and the west wing for American Idol. And I generally traded The OC for Survivor (not right now though). And on Friday's we record numbers while we're out.
So if we were a neilson family, there are a few shows that are slipping under the radar that I really enjoy.
I doubt this affects the ratings too much, but I wonder if it plays into some of the shows. I don't know why they just don't figure out a way to put a chip or something in TV's or Tivo to measure ratings. I could care less as long as I don't have to give out my name for Spam, heck I don't care if they know what I watch.

We all know (and simply can't bear to tell Mary) that the fate of Arrested Development is uncertain. So, should News Corp. chairman Rupert Murdoch be looking for one very good reason to save this show, let it be this: If he doesn't, he will make Grandma Mary cry. You may ask (if you follow such things) why I'm singling out Murdoch instead of newly appointed Fox network president Peter Liguori. The somewhat promising answer is this: According to a reliable Fox insider, former network chief Gail Berman had a little chat with her successor before leaving for Paramount Pictures, and the widespread consensus coming out of that meeting was: "Liguori is 100 percent behind Arrested Development and unless Rupert Murdoch says, 'Over my dead body,' it will come back."
(Kinda makes you wanna piddle, no?)
http://cache.eonline.com/Reviews/Images90/a/90.arnett.will.040705.jpg"There seems to be complete support top to bottom over at Fox," Jason Bateman tells me. "And I think the only reason we haven't heard from Mr. Murdoch is that it's a little too early in the process for him to weigh in. But I can't imagine a scenario in which he would say 'No, no, no, it can't come back.' " Will Arnett (the always hilarious "Gob" Bluth) is also hopeful. "I'd be surprised if we didn't come back," he says. "I really do think we will get a third season. We've got a lot of fans right now who are superdedicated...Fox said they pulled us from the May schedule to protect the show, and we believe them."
How long are they going to wait, before making a decision about the future of the show?

FOX DOES MORE TIME WITH “ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT” ORDERING A FULL THIRD SEASON
FOX gets ARRESTED again. The network has ordered a third full season of the Emmy Award-winning comedy series ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT, it was announced today by Peter Liguori, President, Entertainment for Fox Broadcasting Company.
“ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT is one of the best comedies on television. The decision to order another season becomes easy when you consider its amazing cast, creative brilliance, critical acclaim and advertiser appeal," said Liguori. "It's my first official pick-up since taking the job, and I think it's a great way to start."
The critically acclaimed series revolves around Michael Bluth (Jason Bateman), the good son who must run the family business and continue to pick up the pieces as he keeps his offbeat family from falling apart. The comedy has featured guest appearances by numerous stars including Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Liza Minnelli, Heather Graham and Ben Stiller. Last year, the show received five Emmy Awards for Outstanding Comedy Series, Writing, Directing, Casting and Editing. Additionally, Jason Bateman won a Golden Globe for Outstanding Actor in a Leading Role – Musical or Comedy Series and the show was nominated for two Golden Globe Awards for Outstanding Musical or Comedy Series. This past season, the cast was nominated for a SAG Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series. The show was also named an AFI Program of the Year and received the Critics’ Choice Award for Best Comedy, among other accolades.
ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT is produced by Imagine Television and 20th Century Fox Television. Ron Howard, Brian Grazer, David Nevins and Mitch Hurwitz are executive producers.

I know that's not entirely the case, but how often does a page get put up without anything concrete behind it?

Frequently. Then it either gets populated with more info later, or the deal for the movie falls through and it gets deleted.

I don't know why I resisted this show for so long. I guess when I hear "clever" and "smart' I assume I'll see it as "pretentious". But I've gotten through the first season and a third in about 2 weeks, and it's one of the greatest things I've ever seen.
Tobias has reached the point with me where the mere delivery of the lines is hillarious.

I think this is sad, fyi - but the people who think pretentious are often the same people who think subtlety is a kind of condiment. :D

Narrator: On the next Arrested Development, Tobias listens to a day's worth of his own recordings to see what Michael was referring to.
Tobias Fünke: [on tape] Even if it means me taking a chubby, I will suck it up!
Tobias Fünke: [out loud] Nothing wrong with that.
Tobias Fünke: [on tape] I've been in the film business for a while but I just cant seem to get one in the can.
Tobias Fünke: [out loud] Context...
Tobias Fünke: [on tape] I wouldn't mind kissing that man between the cheeks.
Narrator: And he realizes there IS something distinct about the way he speaks.
Tobias Fünke: [out loud] Tobias... you blow hard!
Oh, and
Tobias Fünke: I'm afraid I prematurely shot my wad on what was supposed to be a dry run if you will, so I'm afraid I have something of a mess on my hands.

Can't wait for the movie, but I can't believe they're making it. This has to be the least popular TV show ever made into a movie. And you'd have to know the show to appreciate the movie. Who's going to see this thing outside of Arrested Development super-diehards, of which there weren't very many?

I've always felt the real brilliance of AD was the fact that it's still funny at a very superficial level. You don't need to know anything about the show to find Tobias' many antics, for instance, having to do with Blue Man funny. Of course if you know the antics from previous episodes lines suddenly become funnier. I am sure with the switch to a movie there will be some dumbing down, but even a dumbed down AD should still be better than 90% of the comedies which come out.

I hope they are able to get everyone back to do it. I know that Michael Cera (and Jason Bateman, at one point) was pretty leary about doing one when it was first talked about. It just wouldn't be the same if they didn't have the full cast intact.

As for your other question, it's amazing that anybody sees any of the shit that's out there, so I won't be surprised when this is a modest hit at the box office. And I don't consider myself a super-diehard (first caught the show on DVD) but I'll definitely be there.

I don't think that's true. To me if you watch the last 3 episodes of any particular season consecutively, or the last 4 for that matter, you've got the same sort of arc you'd see in a movie.

I feel the opposite way. Knowing Hurwitz and how good the writing was for the show, it's going to be excellent. Since this is such a labor of love I just don't see them doing it half-assed. Even if Cera decides he's too big for it, they'll find some hilarious way to write him off.

Cera was leery because he felt the show ended just right, according to interviews he had. I don't think it'd be because of ego. This is based off of observations, of course...but he just does not come across as the sort to get too big of a head for this.

I feel for Cera a little bit. His career is rolling right now -- imdb has him in 3 projects coming out next year.
There is nothing wrong with wanting to look forward instead of back. But if he says that he doesn't want to do an AD movie because he wants to move on, he risks pissing off the AD fans out there that provide many of the paying customers for his new movies.
Ultimately, I suspect he will suck it up and do it. Money is money.

I honestly don't get the big draw with Cera. It is not that I don't like him. He was fine as GM. But he wasn't outstanding or anything. Is it really that hard to act awkward? I thought Superbad was good, and Juno as well, but I didn't like either because of him. More despite him since he just always seems to be reading his lines awkwardly.
ISiddiqui
11-13-2008, 05:51 PM
Considering that he seems to be the "it" guy for 'awkward teen' acting, apparently it is. I mean, I haven't seen anyone do it as good as him. Of course, he's being very, very typecast. His character is Superbad, Juno, Nick & Nora and GM were kind of the same, with varying degrees of coolness/nerdiness (but in a very narrow band). He needs to break out of it.

Love Arrrested Development, love Gob. Gob is one of my favorite tv characters of all time. Sadly I haven't enjoyed anything he has done since. I hated him in 30 Rock (and I think 30 Rock is outstanding comedy a lot of the time) and I can't think of a movie he was in that was funny. It would have to be a mid season fill in, or something during the summer. Fox isn't exactly hurting for shows and AD was never that big in ratings to start with and a break won't help, see writer's strike. Part of me thinks it was a great show, but I'm not sure how much it was built for the long term, but then you see stuff like Seinfeld.

The thing about Arrested Development, is there were so many people who got into the show (myself included) AFTER the show went off the air. If I remember correctly, Fox really didn't do this show any favors by not giving it a good slot (I think it was on Sundays?).
Fast forward 5 years, and there are tons of people who watched the show on DVD. Call me crazy, but I think if they legitimately relaunched the show on a longer term basis, it would be really successful due to the following they have now. I guess part of the problem is the characters have most likely aged too much.

Storywise I'm not so worried, it's the idea of jokes being setup in one episode, and payed off in other episodes that has me on the fence. If I'm watching the Gob episode and get a set up, and watch the Buster episode 2 days later, I don't want to have to think back to what the set up was.

Hit and miss, but still better than anything on TV today...

Enjoying it for the most part, but that might be in comparison to most of the other crap out there. Hate the George Michael parts. Makes me dislike Michael Cera even more.

I've watched the first two and while I enjoyed them on a certain level, I think they way they had to shoot this thing has really hampered the style. Watching the same two or three characters for 30 minutes starts to wear thin. A lot of the jokes seem to land heavier when you can't move around as much and cut to other situations.
Also did not like the tone of Michaels character at all in episode one. Yes, he was always selfish and single minded, especially when it came to George Michael, but they really dumbed his ass down for episode 1.

Alright, a little bit of truth here. The 3rd season sucked. This is better than that was. It's got a lot of time, and plot to create/make, but all in all, it is pretty damn entertaining and I have laughed at parts in each of the first 3 episodes.
There are lots of jokes that just slide by unless you are paying attention just like the original series. That's really the beauty of the show.
My complaints are like Suicane said, Michael's character took a bit of a turn for the worse, and damn if Portia has had so much work done that she doesn't even look like she used to. I'd still watch her eat pussy though, but that's a completely different show.

I watched the first five yesterday. They are pretty good. Better than season 3, but when you have a cast that isn't available they did what they could.
Michael's character was odd in the first episode even though I thought the funniest piece of the five episodes was when George Michael crossed off 'Da' and wrote Michael.

Ten episodes in and I'm still not sure what I think. No real laugh out loud moments and the episodes overlap so much that it feels like I've gotten three or four episodes worth of actual new material so far.

Agreed. It's borderline distracting.
I'm about 3 episodes in, and I have had the occasional laugh, but much of the fun of the old show came from all of the family interplay, and you just aren't getting that in these episodes. At least not yet. I am still confident it will all come together, but it feels a little sloggy early on, which is not good.

I couldn't figure out if it was her or someone that kinda sorta looked like her that they got because she wasn't available and signed on for some sort of agreement to be replaced with a double.
Wow.

Weird, I dont get what you guys are seeing at all. She looks the same to me. They do make a crack about a nose job in episode 7 or 8, thought that was pretty funny.

In the middle of episode 8 and I'm really starting to enjoy it. I'm loving the way the story is being weaved together and outside of Micheals episodes I'm enjoying the characters. I think that it was just jarring at first with so many new characters that made it feel off.

Until the new subscriber numbers come out.
It really picked up the last five episodes. It's more like a long movie with a slow start that is needed to setup the rest of the movie.

Just my 2 cents and I am sure opinions vary greatly.
I am 9 in. I watched the first 3 season episodes at least 5 times each and am a pretty big fan. First off, honestly, it isn't as good as the first 3 seasons. The pacing is slower, the craziness is subdued quite a bit in a few of the episodes and the lack of family cohesion makes things different (and not in a good way). Ron Howard is used too often as the narrator. The first episode was the worst of the series and the the George Sr. episodes haven't been great either.
Now, onto the good stuff. I think the stories of Tobias are absolutely hilarious and rank among the best in any season. Gob's episodes are also fantastic. I haven't gotten to the last 6 but up until episode 9, those are by far the best.
Another positive, even in the poor episodes there are some funny moments. They aren't gold and they move slower but I still laughed. The richer laughs come further as you watch and see some of the earlier things people were doing pay off with funny moments later on. The amount of time between a weird set up for a joke and the payoff is a bit long in some cases but the payoffs can be outstanding.
All in all, I prefer having these episodes rather than not having them. A lot of the quick banter with underlying jokes has been lost but it is still better than most tv (probably anything other than Curb). Personally, I would still love to see a movie result from this series. I think one of the main reasons the family wasn't together during an entire episode was due to availability issues. Having a movie would get rid of those problems and allow for some joke setups that begin in the beginning of the movie and pay off towards the middle and end.

Netflix only operates in a handful of countries, so I am not surprised by the piracy numbers. A large percentage of TV torrent downloads come from outside the US.

Looks like about 18% came from within the US. Roughly 30,000 episodes were downloaded in the US. If you assume each person watched all 15 episodes, that's about 2,000 people.
Someone should at least inform them that its pretty easy to get a free netflix trial for 30 days.

I think that proves its not about ease or logic but rather just that some people want to pirate stuff illegally. Theres probably no rational discussion to be had with them.

On the other side, Netflix already spends $2 Billion a year for content, so does it make sense to expand and pay for worldwide licensing just to access places with that kind of piracy culture? Should Netflix put it upon themselves to try to single-handedly change that culture and make money from those people? I'm sure they have a lot of internal debate about the international market. But they probably can't afford the licensing in any event, they struggle enough keeping a stocked library just in the U.S.

The problem is that piracy will not end unless there is a better alternative. You certainly can't read anything into the piracy rates of a Netflix exclusive in a non Netflix territory.

It's not Netflix's responsibility to end piracy. They're at least not losing money off of international pirates. That wouldn't necessarily be the case if the paid the licensing fees to expand their services globally.
Edit: I'm just amused by the common refrain that people have "no choice" but to pirate if Netflix or whoever won't come to town. If that's their feeling, great, but I guarantee Netflix reads into the piracy rates of Netflix exclusives in non-Netflix territories. They can't change a piracy culture all on their own.

I'm through the third episode and glad to see some of you shared my thoughts at this point, but that it got better further on. My gut tells me that their choice to tell the story in this way will ultimately be a major miss, even if it does come together in a satisfactory way by the end.
I can't believe how much work Portia had done. She looks horrific compared to how she used to, when I thought she was one of the most beautiful women on TV.

Had the same reaction to Portia at first. I'm pretty sure she's wearing a wig to age her appearance. Sure, she may have had other stuff done, but she looks much more like herself after the first few episodes.

This. It ends in fantastic fashion, with loose ends from earlier eps getting put in their proper place. It's really quite amazing. I will soon watch it again (maybe after watching "Orange is the New Black" to look again at the series knowing how the story lines end and seeing what clues I missed).
I think it's better than Season 3 and the way they've done it, in a telling everyone's story separately and it comes together in the end is fascinating and I'd like to see more of that type.

I guess there are talks for a 5th season. Kind of torn on it. I think season 4 picked up a lot at the end, but it still didn't have the same magic of the early ones. And I do think the original stuff that Netflix has been doing is great and I wouldn't mind seeing that money go toward a new creative show.

Shows like Arrested Development will bring more new subscribers to Netflix than any Netflix original could. This is good for the Netflix bottom line, which in turn means more money to spend on creating original programming.

+1. What were there, 15 episodes? The rough framework of season 4 is that the first 5 episodes set up the next 7, and the final 3 set up whatever comes next. So the middle portion is the payoff.
