Why I KNOW The Eagles Will Lose

i know the eagles will lose because they paraded the wrong damn trophy around the stadium. they were WAY too happy to just get to the big game.

in hockey, no one will even TOUCH the conference champion trophy, let alone parade it around.

and yes, i know terry bradshaw told them to do it, but still...who does what bradshaw says? i mean, its the wrong freakin' trophy.

defend it all you want, but running that trophy around the field was their kiss of death, and the eagles will lose.

McNabb definitely doesn't sound happy just to be there. He sounds like a man determined to win the Super Bowl. I think he will keep the team focused as well (not that they need it.) It did not look like the Eagles wanted to run that trophy.

Sorry, but I just don't buy this "happy to be there crap". Of course, they will be happy to be there, and they'll enjoy all the pre-super bowl hype probably more than the Patriots. But what does that have to do with their performance on the field when its time to kick off? If you know anything about Andy Reid, you know he will have his team as prepared to play as the Pats.

If they lose, it won't be beacuse they are happy to be there.

I have always thought that the hockey tradition of not touching the conference champion trophy is one of the best in sports. Sure there are those out there who remember conference champions, but they would be the exception rather than the rule. It would be great if teams in other sports would follow suit in not touching the trophy. No one should be happy just to get there.

To all you folks getting defensive over Pyser's original post, it's just superstition talk, people. I guess hockey players (and fans) are more superstitious than football people, but he was just saying. For the Eagles fans, you obviously want your team to win the game, but is there any reason to dismiss the superstition so vehemently?

It's true that NHL teams generally don't touch the conference championship trophy when they win it (although Scott Stevens immediately grabbed the Prince of Wales Trophy in 2003, and his team went on to win the Stanley Cup that season). There's a reason that they won't touch it: it's not what they're playing for. I think that many football players and fans (not necessarily the fans on this board) don't quite understand that concept. Yes, they know that they want to win the Super Bowl, but there's a difference. Football players and fans aren't in it for the Vince Lombardi Trophy. They're in it so they can be called Super Bowl champions. NHL players are in it for the Stanley Cup. It's not all about the title. It's about being literally etched into their sport's history for eternity. The actual trophy means a hell of a lot more to NHL people than it does to NFL people.

I can't speak for Pyser, but I got the impression that he was emphasizing the trophy far more than most football fans would. I don't have a problem with that.

I guess the Devils lost the Stanley Cup that season? They obviously didn't deserve to win since a team member touched the 'wrong' trophy.

Oh, and for the record, I would have this same opinion no matter which team was being talked about. It's just an idiotic hockey tradition. As was asked earlier but never really answered, if neither of the teams touch the Conference Trophy than historically your odds of winning by not touching is 50 percent. With Scott Stevens touching the trophy we know that the odds of winning when touching are at least one for one. I guess this is like the other hockey tradition of orally pleasing a moose after drinking a case of molson before a big game. ;)

Nobody's saying that avoiding the trophy is any kind of guarantee that you'll win a championship. It's all about knowing what you're playing for. I could try to say more, but it'd essentially be a repeat of what I said before.

See, I respectfully think that the point still isn't getting across. Not touching the conference championship trophy in the NHL is a superstition, yes. We also understand that there are no cosmic forces that affect whether touching the trophy will change the outcome of the Finals.

I do not mean to imply that conference champions in the NHL or NFL shouldn't be happy or proud of what they've already accomplished. Be happy. Be proud. Enjoy it. When Pyser brought up the trophy thing, I think it was just using that superstition in good fun (which is what most sports superstitions really are, I would hope).

When I said that it's all about knowing what you're playing for, let me again stress that the NHL players are playing for a trophy. They are playing for temporary possession of a physical, tangible object. If you offer them other objects along the way, they will generally refuse. I don't think the same thing applies to NFL players, so applying an NHL superstition to them is a bit silly, but I think that was sort of the point.
