View Full Version : Predicting Movies

Pyser
01-31-2005, 08:52 PM
I thought it would be fun...to me...and probably few else....to try and predict what the #1 movie will be in America every week. I'll post what movie I think will make the most money from Friday to Sunday (in the event of 5 day releases, I'll still probably on predict Fri-Sun, but we'll cross that bridge later). I'll also post how much money I think it will make.

Why? I don't know. Just to see how close a non-industry guy is to projecting anything correctly.

Opening February 4th:

Boogeyman
The Wedding Date

I expect the Wedding Date to not do well. It looks bad, even by chick-click romantic standards. So it boils down to Boogeyman vs. last week's champ, Hide and Seek.

Hide and Seek made $22-mil last weekend. Not too big...and it doesn't seem like the kind of movie that has staying power, or good word of mouth. So I'll go with the new scary movie this week.

prediction to open #1:
Boogeyman - $19-mil.

that didn't line up right, but it says that Boogeyman was the top movie this weekend, at $19.5mil. i guessed $19mil. pretty damn close. a good start!

opening this week:

• Hitch
• Bride and Prejudice (limited)
• Inside Deep Throat (limited)

pretty easy prediction, here. with nothing opening against it, combined with the utter lack of any decent comedies in over a month, hitch will sweep up easily (even though "inside deep throat" is EXCELLENT).

I'll take Hitch as #1, coming in at $33-mil.

Pyser

yeah, im pretty sure i low-balled this one.

if valentines day was fri or sat, it would probably hit 50 mil.

Opening February 18, 2005
• Because of Winn-Dixie
• Constantine
• Son of the Mask

This is the first tough one to predict. Constantine gets the early vote from me, but you cant (amazingly) rule out Son of the Mask. Kids movies generally do very well. Add in a very possible strong second week from Hitch, and we've got quite the 3-headed race.

I'm holding off, but my early gut instinct says Constantine at $29-mil.

Pyser

weird. i thought about my prediction this morning, and came here to post it...only to find its exactly what i already put up as my early guess.

Constantine: $29mil.

but woah! very bittersweet. i was within 1.5m on constantine on a very tough week to call. however, hitch came in #1 overall, so i was flat our wrong. didnt think it could hold up to the 2 kids movies plus constantine. i am very surprised. damn it.

• Cursed
• Look at Me (limited)

Yikes. VERY tough week. Hitch continues to impress. Constantine we can expect to drop. And now Cursed, yet another horror movie. They are really cranking these out, arent they? Wonder how many are gonna come out in October.

My early reaction is to, unbelievably, go with Cursed. These horror puppies are a safe bet to bring in around $20-mil every opening weekend. I expect Constantine to drop to the $10-$15m range...but Hitch, I don't know. Hasn't everyone seen it by now? Then again, what other comedy would you go see if you havent? Does Hitch have enough legs to crack $20m to take number one again? I'll give you my guess later this week...

oykib
02-22-2005, 08:58 AM
If you want to line it up, type up the part that goes in the 'code' tags up in Notepad first. Then, cut-and-paste that into your post. Be careful with 'TAB'. It moves you about five spaces. So if you've got a long title like Constatine, you've got to 'TAB' twice.

what about the comedy with tommy lee jones..isnt that coming our friday?

Pyser
02-25-2005, 12:08 PM
according to yahoo movies, no...perhaps i should find a better site. lets go with imbd.

movies being released today:

* Horem pαdem
* Man of the House
* Cursed
* Diary of a Mad Black Woman

Which still doesnt make this easier for me (not because of 'man of the house', mind you).

I'm sticking with Hitch, at about $18-mil. It's entirely possible that Cursed will edge it out, but I just can't go with a movie they re-shot at least THREE TIMES. If people go to see this one, it's their own fault.

HOLY CRAP!!

ok, i totally didnt see that coming. at all. didnt think Diary of a Mad Black Woman would come close to topping $10-mil. Wow.

Hitch made $3-mil more than i thought. incredible staying power. And Cursed didnt top $10-mil, which is good. It also means I was incredibly wrong this week. This is turning out to be much tougher than I originally thought.

alright, a supporter!

this weeks movies:

* Be Cool
* The Pacifier
* The Jacket
* Dear Frankie

Despite the bad word of mouth, this week should easily belong to Be Cool. My early guy says $32-mil. I can't imagine it being good, but the people love sequels, and the people still love Travolta. Plus, everyone who has ever walked on 2 feet is in this movie, too (which you know is bad).

Karlifornia
03-01-2005, 08:14 PM
Be Cool would be the logical favorite, but be mighty wary of the Pacifier. Vin Diesel, believe it or not, is still a name (especially to women), and kids movies usually have a guaranteed chunk there. Therefore, I will predict the upset and say...

The Pacifier: 25 Mill

JeeberD
03-01-2005, 09:27 PM
If you can consider my girlfriend as a typical woman who likes Vin Diesel, this movie is going to flop.

"What the hell is he doing?!?!?!"

mhass

There are posters for that movie ALL OVER downtown Chicago. Panic anyone?

Pyser
03-02-2005, 04:11 PM
I think the Pacifier will do well. $15-mil or so. Maybe even more. If Be Cool wasn't opening the same weekend, it would probably come in first, overall. Then again, who knows, maybe Diary of a Mad Black Woman will have strong legs.

But my guess is Be Cool, $34-mil. Only because it's a sequel.

ntndeacon
03-02-2005, 10:09 PM
I kinda think Diary of a Mad Black Woman will have legs. This flick is selling out in many theatres.

Pyser
03-06-2005, 05:20 PM
This is starting to get embarassing:

#1 - The Pacifier - $30.2-mil
#2 - Be Cool - $23.5

So I wasn't even close. This is proving to be harder than I thought.

Pyser

opening this week:

* Robots
* The Passion of the Christ
* Hostage
* The Upside of Anger

The gut says Robots bigtime, but the guts been way off lately.

Karlifornia
03-08-2005, 08:42 PM

Robots $53 mill

Pyser
03-10-2005, 11:25 AM
I'll go with Robots, $45-mil.

the real question, how well the passion do this time around? id guess its good for at least another 10m.

Pyser
03-18-2005, 09:31 PM
okay, little late this week. overshot with robots, it only made $36 mil.

opening this week:

* Ice Princess
* Melinda and Melinda
* The Ring Two
* Steamboy

Easily Ring 2 here. I'll go big: $44m. That'd be very high for a scary movie, but the sequel thing helps.

Pyser
03-23-2005, 06:15 PM
this is where my lack of movie knowledge hurts me. turns out, the grudge (!!!!) has the highest horror movie opening weekend ever, at only 38m. so picking the ring 2 to make 44m was kind of dumb.

in any event, it made $35m, not bad.

opening this week:

* Miss Congeniality 2: Armed and Fabulous
* Guess Who
* D.E.B.S.
* Oldboy

should be an easy win for miss con2. will post my predictions later.

Pyser
03-25-2005, 12:35 AM

I'll go with Miss Congeniality 2 with $26m.

Pyser

GRRR. i suck at this. my thinking on sequels needs to be reworked.

anyway, guess who came in at #1 making $21m. Miss Con made $14.5m. Damn. That's a big win for Ashton, who usually sucks at the box office.

Guess Who simply had a broader demographic appeal than Miss Congeniality 2.

Sin City
Beauty Shop

OK. The R-rated Sin City is a lock. I have no idea what the highest grossing R rated opening is, but this should challenge it. I'm pretty sure it was one of the Matrix sequels. Non sequels, i have no idea, but I'm going huge on this one.

I agree it has a lot of buzz, but I think people might be put off by the cinematography. For comic book fans, it's excellent. For my wife, it's going to be 2 hours of hell. I think they make that clear in the commercials, and so the masses will stay away. I hope I'm wrong. It's nice to see geekdom in the mainstream. :)

I'll take a guess, I'd say $35 million for Sin City.

It has the R rating, it is going against the Final Four, and Opening Day. I'm also not sure if it'll beat Beauty Shop, with the weekend being sports heavy, a movie that targets women could make some cash.

* Fever Pitch
* Sahara

the question is, did everyone who really wanted to see Sin City go? As was pointed out in this thread, the ncaa tourny and baseball could have kept people away....as well as a monsoon in the ny area.

TazFTW

Not that it will matter but Gong Fu aka Kung Fu Hustle is only being released in NY and LA this Friday, it'll open nationwide on the 22nd or 29th.

I think Sahara will be the winner at probably $25 mil.

I don't think Fever Pitch will win because it needs people that think Jimmy Fallon is funny and people that don't hate the Red Sox.

another week, another wrong guess. i thought sahara was too much like national treasure, but that turned out to be a good thing. it made $18m to come in first.

a couple others are opening smaller (including the excellent House of D), but it's Amityville all the way. early guess - $24m.

# HAPPILY EVER AFTER

im not putting it past king's ransom...a dumb comedy could do well this week. the interpreter seems too high-brow for most americans...and a lot like love...hmm...ashton is becoming a bit of a draw. and then there's amityville again.

With the theater counts I've seen, King's Ransom would not be #1 as it will be only shown on 1500 screens.

I'd say The Interpreter makes $20 mil, followed by Kung Fu Hustle and A Lot Like Love. I pick Kung Fu Hustle over A Lot Like Love because it has gotten a great per screen avg, 52 good reviews at Rottentomatoes, Ashton Kutcher blows, and if it comes to a screen near me I'll be seeing it on Friday. :)

I should just stick to picking who'll win. I'm more correct that way.

but thats way too easy (sometimes).

this weekend we see xxx2: state of the union, vs. hitchhikers guide to the galaxy.

now, hitchhikers is one of my favorite books, and as such, i know ill be seeing it (if only to quickly say, "the book was better"), but from everything ive heard, its awful.

clearing the way for a very easy xxx win. early guess: 27m.

TazFTW
04-29-2005, 12:08 AM
If XXX was rated R, I'd probably pick Hitchhikers. However, it is PG-13, will be on 350 more screens, and is 20 minutes shorter than Hitchhiker's (reasoning being a screen should be able to show XXX one more time than it could show Hitchhiker's). Hitchhiker's does have better reviews so far (50% as opposed to XXX's 15% at Rottentomatoes).

I say XXX gets $32 million, Hitchhiker's gets $22 million.

well, i got this one wrong, but was glad to do so.

xxx2 came in THIRD at 14m (interpreter 2nd). and hitchhikers guide came in 1st, at 21m or so.

i loved the book, im glad to see it come in first. guess i should see the movie.

opening next week:

Crash
House of Wax
Kingdom of Heaven

very tough to call. but i do know this. GO SEE CRASH RIGHT AWAY. it will rank as one of the top 5 movies of the year. its truly incredible, and actually has something to say, as well. easily my favorite of the year.

that said, this week hinges on kingdom of heaven. is orlando bloom enough of a star to carry the movie? the guys will want to see it because its essentially Gladiator. the girls...will bloom pull em in? or does everyone want to see paris hilton die in house of wax?

early nod to house of wax, at the standard 20m. not trusting legolas right now.

Kingdom of Heaven has the scale, the subject and the star.

They will take in 36 million.

Well, at least I got the Hitchhiker's total almost dead on. Should have went with the reliable, "If I see it, it'll be #1" theory*. Would have expected Ice Cube to draw more and it had X to the Z Xzibit pimping a ride.

It'll be interesting next week with all 3 of the major releases being rated R.

*Been correct for 3 of the last 4 movies I've seen (Sin City, Sahara, and now Hitchhiker's).

I say Kingdom of Heaven gets $25 million. My main concern is that it clocks in at 2 hours 25 mins, and I am not sure about peoples' attention span.

I'm really hearing bad things. Really bad things.

That said, why is every movie coming out this weekend rated R? WHY THE HELL IS HOUSE OF WAX RATED R?

even so, House of Wax wins. teenagers would rather see paris hilton die than orlando bloom fight the crusades. Plus, it's an hour shorter.

House of Wax- $21m.

(and i expect a solid weekend from Hitchhikers Guide, since everything else is an R. good for them!)

I've seen it and it's not bad. The story is a bit iffy as is Orlando Bloom in the lead.

Will probably check it out again on DVD if what I've heard is true and Ridley Scott cut out an hour (which will be put back in for a director's cut DVD).

Pyser

jeez, i am TERRIBLE at this. kingdom of heaven won the week, at just under $20m. interestingly, the box office has been down for 11 straight weeks, when compared to last year. but i think thats cuz the movies have been bad (though some are blaming dvds and such, which i dont buy).

ok, last pre-star wars week. what opens?

• Kicking & Screaming
• Mindhunters
• Monster-in-Law
• Unleashed

kicking & screaming is my pick here. $25m, as kids and teens see this thanks to mr. ferrell. and i feel like 25 might be a bit low. i think this movie will surprise.

Wow this is a tough week. A lot of possible number 1's, with no runaway. Monster-In-Law has been been mondo hype. Jet Li movies always have a following, so Unleashed could take it. Will Ferrell has, somehow, become box-office silver (not quite gold) in recent years. I guess if I had to guess, I'd say Monster In Law-29 mil

I'm gonna have to eliminate Mindhunters and Unleashed from consideration. With the anti-J.Lo mentality and the fact that her last several films have bombed, I suspect Monster-in-Law will tank. Giving Kicking and Screaming the win with let's say $22 million. I would have gone higher but the box office just seems to be in a snide the past couple months.

i guess the massive media blitz worked for monster in law. just a terrible, terrible movie, overall though.

it speaks volumes that the best movie in this list (by MILES), is in 5th place...though it is still in limited release. but i cant recommend Crash enough.

but damn. i guess its weekeneds like this that keep j.lo employed.

and now, the week we've all been waiting for!!!

the (excellent) revenge of the sith opens at 12:01 a.m. on thursday, where hundreds, if not thousands of screenings are already sold out. so for this week, let's do multiple predictions.

1) Opening day total (thursday)
2) Regular weekend haul (friday-sunday)
3) Add up 1 and 2 for your 4 day prediction
4) Predict the final box office figures for the release of Revenge of the Sith (not counting the 3-D version coming in a few years).

having done no research whatsoever, ill take the first stab:

1) Opening day total (thursday) - $31m
2) Regular weekend haul (friday-sunday) - $93m
3) Add up 1 and 2 for your 4 day prediction - $124m
4) Predict the final box office figures for the release of Revenge of the Sith (not counting the 3-D version coming in a few years). - $420m

Opening Weekend: $97 million
Thursday-Sunday: $134 million

1) Opening day total (thursday): $36 million
2) Regular weekend haul (friday-sunday): $103 million
3) Add up 1 and 2 for your 4 day prediction: $139 million
4) Predict the final box office figures for the release of Revenge of the Sith: $385 million

I'm starting to think the good word of mouth and newly invigorated anticipation will ratchet it up a bit, but I think ROTS may suffer what TPM and AOTC suffered, which is a lot of people deciding to wait a week to avoid the crowds. I'm starting to think the only way to get Spider-Man type openings any more is to have an event movie that not everyone thinks is THE movie to see opening weekend.

I am guessing that it won't do as well as hoped because they will lose the revenues of the < 10 yr olds?

I say that solely in comparing to other $100+m openings - Harry Potter and Spiderman, where they appealed to all age groups (necessary to get to the $100m opening?).

I'm stunned. Discounting the midnight shows, that's still a $36 million open -- on a Thursday before school is out in most places. Amazing.

I don't know which way this will go. Friday will be down, but by how much? You could slide the $16 million from the midnight screenings off the top and go with $34 on Friday, then you'd think Saturday would be up a bit, maybe closer to $40, then down on Sunday again. If I made my guesses knowing the Thursday number, I'd probably bump my weekend guess up to $110 million.

It will be interesting to see what happens Saturday. If it can hit close to $45 million Saturday, I think Spiderman will go down.

Pyser
05-20-2005, 08:49 PM
well, the most amazing thing about spidermans opening was it was a regular friday release. i dont know if there were even midnight screenings. so the 114m or whatever it was over 3 days was just mind boggling.

but i think 50m on a thursday is even more impressive.

all in all, EVERYONE who tried their hand at predicting this film undersold it. pretty amazing.

so on we go. the new contenders to try and unseat star wars:

The Longest Yard
Madagascar

All 3 realistically have a shot at #1. I think Star Wars will have excellent repeat business ($30m or so), which to me is enough to edge out the 2 newcomers...i think.

Interesting. It made more on Saturday and Sunday than Friday (Friday is usually the biggest day of the weekend take).

wouldnt that be because friday is usually "opening day"? thursday kind of took its thunder away...making friday more like a saturday...only people had to work, on top of that.

Hmm, Star Wars beat everyone's expectations but does that mean that the people that said they would wait a few weeks change their minds?
Madagascar and The Longest Yard are so far getting mediocre reviews.

I say Star Wars takes #1 again with a 4 day total of $34 million. Madagascar takes 2nd with $27 million and The Longest Yard in 3rd with $22 million.

Who's doing the estimation? If it's studios- different ones could have different methods.

um...lets just say we were predicting 3 days instead of four :)

WEEKEND EARNINGS
1. Revenge of the Sith $70,750,000
2. Madagascar $61,000,000
3. The Longest Yard $60,000,000

I think Star Wars ($32 mil) will take the weekend again, followed by Madagascar at $25 mil, then Cinderella Man debuting with $23 million.

it's tough to go against star wars, but i think Cinderella Man will do nicely. I'll give it $26m. Star Wars $22m.

Lords of Dogtown is opening, too, but id expect a fourth place finish at best, and possibly fifth.

speaking of which - $60m for a third place movie last week? thats GOT to be a record.

ok, mr. and mrs. smith opens this week. along with adventures of shark boy and lava girl, and the honeymooners.

if mr. and mrs. smith can hit 22m, its theirs. otherwise, ill go with madagascar again, at 21m.

which is a cop out. we are supposed to predict, right? i guess mr. and mrs. smith, though the romance overshadows the film, and i think its an R, which certainly means I'm wrong.

i think cinderella man is suffering from 2 things:

long running time (less screenings per day)

and a bad release date. it doesnt scream "fun summer movie", a la batman, star wars, mr. and mrs. smith, or even longest yard. it wouldve been a better sept/oct movie.

for that matter, i absolutely cannot believe Crash was released when it was. thats got oscar written all over it.

i think people are scared of the spielberg '72 olympics movie coming at christmastime, plus the monster that is Harry Potter.

I think Cinderella Man is suffering because it's gotten tagged as a "boxing movie." I say this because I witnessed a commercial earlier tonight featuring a shot of Ron Howard explaining how "this isn't a movie about a boxer" that was obviously aimed at the ladies.

I took down a nice hit betting the under on WOW. wsex set the line for the weekend at 107... I didn't even think it would be that close.

I'm starting to think that betting on movie grosses might be a profitable side venture.

they set the 3 day total at 107? yeah, id say bet the under on that, since only spiderman has topped 107m in 3 days, i think. no 5 day opening will be extremely high when you just count fri-sun, id think, since the initial opening rush doesnt count.

if it was 107 for the 5 days, i probably wouldnt have taken the under. and technically, i guess this was a 6 day opening, since the 4th is a holiday.

tough week to call here. war of then worlds has a very split reaction, and does not come off as the type of repeat-business movie that say, star wars, or even batman, benefitted from.

however, fantastic 4 is god awful....the question is, do people listen to the reviews?

if it was based on quality, id go with war of the worlds. but i keep getting burned in this thread, so, even though all of me is screaming not to, ill go with the fantastic 4 at 31m.

I think War of the Worlds holds on to #1 with I guess $36 million. I don't think Fantastic Four would surpass it because a) it is getting bad reviews and b) the Fantastic Four aren't really that high on the comic totem pole. I'd say Fantastic Four comes in 2nd with $32 million and Dark Water in 3rd with $23 million.

I had never seen movie that had been spun this week as much as Paramount has done with WotW. They even paid someone (Brandon Gray?) at boxofficemojo to say how great the opening was. It would be interesting/sickening to see how they spin it this week. Hopefully this would shut Cruise up?

I would have said The Island wins this weekend because Bay movies bring in a good box office but the screen count is under 3000 and that's too few for my tastes.

I think Charlie will continue with $30 million, Bad News Bears with $28 million followed by The Island with $25 and the Wedding Crashes at $20-ish.

It goes against my which movie will I see this weekend theory but that is because I want to see The Island as well as Hustle and Flow which has gotten some pretty good reviews.

of all the weeks predicting so far, i am most surprised at the islands numbers. i guess bay needs bruckheimer more than he thought.

this weekend, sky high (which ive never heard of, but is getting over 2700 screens), stealth, and must love dogs opens. id stay away from stealth because it seems too similar to the island to me, except jaime foxx and biehl help it a lot. must love dogs opens, too, and we havent seen a romantic comedy come along in a while.

predictions in a few days, as i need to noodle this one.

Interesting... It looks like Deuce will have the bigger screen count but I don't see people going to Deuce in droves. Skeleton Key is the suspense/horror flick but I don't think they've done well this year. Four Brothers is a John Singleton flick and it has Marky Mark, Tyrese, and Andre 3000 of Outkast. It also has Terrence Howard, who is en fuego.

I think I'll go with Four Brothers taking it with $25 million, followed by Skeleton Key at $22 million, Dukes with $18 million, and Deuce with $17 mil.

2 awful release weeks in a row. makes me wonder why they didnt hold something like "Crash" till now, for both box office and oscar support.

Aug. 31 Theaters
The Constant Gardener 1,300

Sep. 2 Theaters
A Sound of Thunder 800

im very tempted to go 40 year old virgin again, but instead ill go with new blood, just because my gut says virgin cant win 3 times in a row.

well, it didnt get interesting...probably because most kids dont see movies on friday nights. chicken little was definitely for the day crowd.

WEEKEND ESTIMATES

RELEASE SCHEDULE
Nov. 9 Theaters
Get Rich or Die Tryin' 1,652
Nov. 11 Theaters
Derailed 2,441
Zathura 3,223
Pride and Prejudice 215

Tough to call. Get Rich Or Die Tryin has the 2 day lead, but i dont think it will be 8-mile big, and the screen count isnt high.

which allows zathura to step up....but that seems to be in pretty direct competition with chicken little, which should still get 17-20mil pretty easily.

then add in the aniston movie, which is totally anti-kids, and its a weird weekend.

i think its zathura or chicken little...and while im tempted to go zathura, ill chicken little in a repeat for no real reason, at 22m.

TazFTW
11-11-2005, 12:46 AM
Hmm, tough choice. Chicken Little will see a 2nd week fall but will Zathura pull in enough families to surpass it. I'll go with Zathura making $25 million.

RELEASE SCHEDULE**
Nov. 23

The Ice Harvest 1,400
In the Mix 1,400+
Just Friends 2,000+
Rent 2,100+
Yours, Mine and Ours 3,000
Pride and Prejudice 1,100

i guess studios are banking on people seeing more than 1 movie over thanksgiving break. and what a weird mix.

i mean, who the hell decided to hold "just friends" for an end of year run? seems like a january movie, or august, to me. it's gonna die a fiery death post-potter.

speaking of which....yours, mine and ours? are they banking on young kids seeing this? another odd release time....but i guess they are following the "cheaper by the dozen" release last year. just dont know who'll see it (but then, i dont know who saw cheaper by the dozen, and thats got a sequel out this year, so what do i know).

rent may make some money, though...and has an entirely different demographic than potter.

but i will not go against potter. no way. my 4 day weekend guess: 52m.

just for fun, ill predict 2nd place...and say rent. 31m.

WEEKEND ESTIMATES
1. Harry Potter / Goblet of Fire $54,905,000
2. Walk the Line $19,700,000
3. Yours, Mine and Ours $17,475,000
4. Chicken Little $12,421,000
5. Rent $10,700,000

add another 12 or so to potter for the 4 day total.

so i was way under for potter, and WAY over on rent. goodness. i should stick to just the top spot...thats tough enough.

TazFTW

Potter wins by default. The only film going wide is Aeon Flux and I don't see it having a big box office. I'll go with Harry Potter for $30 million.
