NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. — A student group at Rutgers University (search (javascript:siteSearch('Rutgers University');)) has demanded sandwich vendors on campus change the names of sandwiches that have been deemed offensive.

Some of the sandwiches, which have been voted the best "fat" sandwiches by Maxim magazine, are called; "Fat Dyke," "Fat Phillipino" [sic] and "Fat Bitch." The big bites are sold by so-called "grease trucks" on the New Jersey school's main road.

"We feel that those names are inappropriate and offensive and that they contribute to a hostile climate at the trucks and that makes people feel unwelcome," said Laurie Marhoefer, a student member of the Rutgers gay students group.

Some students don't care what their favorite eats are called.

"I don't take any offense to it, it's not as if ... this is in any way like, detracting from my culture or sense of identity, you know," said Ben Rojo, who described himself as Filipino-American.

Rutgers cited a contract clause between the trucks and the university when it forced the vendors to change the names. Some students say the forced change is akin to censorship, but others agree with the change and say making all students feel comfortable is more important.

The students who filed the complaint say they're satisfied with the actions the university has taken but they still hope the dialogue spurred by the controversy will continue.

But a grease truck worker identified only as "Mr. C" told The Daily Targum (http://www.dailytargum.com/news/2005/02/16/PageOne/Students.Split.On.Grease.Truck.Names-865457.shtml), the Rutgers student newspaper, that the move was wrong.

"I'm very upset. We're all very upset," he said. "I've been selling [Fat] Bitches for 14 years."

On a serious note, I'm thinking that the Soda companies will become the #1 public enemy(much like Cigarettes and Fast Food) over the next few years. Too much diabetes and other stuff to ignore their contribution to an unhealthy society. Yeah, they aren't responsible for people making bad decisions, but you gotta figure that people will blame them anyways.

Considering I'm not easily offended, it would probably be okay with me. However, if people are offended by a sandwich with that name, then they shouldn't go there to eat. Either the sandwich shop will lose sales because of the name and will either go out of business or change the name, or there won't be enough people who are offended by it to cause them to change it.

That's my take.

I think the big distinction here is that you can vote with your wallet. No one is forcing you to do this. It's not government sanctioned. It's a private business. Much like if the Klan started a business called "Niggers!" (wonder if they would comply with EOE) would probably be a ticket to fail, they would still have the right to call it as such.

I don't know why I didn't post this story when it first broke (about two weeks ago).

For what it's worth, our school paper did a poll of students and asked "Should the names of the sandwiches at the Grease Trucks be censored?"

70% said no. 20% said no, the owners should be responsible for censoring themselves. Only 10% said that the University should do the censoring.

I don't know one person who has ever been offended by the names. We'll call them what we've called them, and tell these sensitive pricks to go F themselves.

One of the off-campus pizza places on Easton Ave here came up with a name for a sandwich that I thought might have went too far. After the Tsunami disaster, they labeled a sandwich the Fat Tsunami. If the contents of the sandwich had anything to do with a tsunami it might have been alright, but they named it that way purely to take advantage of the situation.

By the way, maybe I would've said something about the name if the sandwich wasn't so ridiculously delicious. Let's see...Cheesesteak, gyro meat, mozzarella sticks, fries, hot sauce, white sauce, lettuce, and tomato. I barely remember tasting it between my drunkenness and sheer hunger, but it was fantastic.

Oh, and for any other RU people around here...President Dick McC formerly announced today that he will develop a plan to turn College Ave (the actual road) into a pedestrian walkway. Possibly the worst idea I've heard in my (nearly) four years here.

I disagree. Great idea, it will make Rutgers seem like a real college.

I thought so at first as well. But I started to think of the following:

1. There's a bunch of houses/buildings on College Ave with driveways and small parking lots. What happens with those spaces? Do they just throw grass in these random areas? Where is the additional parking going to be for these people, as well as the (appx) 100 or so spaces that line College Ave? I think all these buildings will just look odd "sitting" on a random pedestrian green walkway.

2. What happens to one-way streets like Seminary and Bishop? Seminary, for example, is a major street for parking by commuters. If you can't drive on College Ave anymore, you would have to widen these streets to allow for two way traffic so people can look for spaces, and some way for them to turn around at the end. Unless they plan on "greening" this area too, which I haven't heard about.

3. The plan right now is to divert traffic to Sicard and George Streets. Are you f'in kiddin me? When cars are parked on both sides of Sicard, the road is barely wide enough for the occassional two-way traffic. They want to throw a ton of traffic and buses on this street? As for George St, traffic is shitty all day, but driving on it from 4 PM to 5 makes you wanna kill yourself. It takes me 10-15 minutes to get from my place on Easton and Somerset to the entrance to 18 to get to Livingston.

If they somehow unveil a plan that would make this work and not look stupid, I'll be all for it. But I feel that the $20 million this would cost could be spent in better ways.

Yep. Damn tasty too. Though my fav was a Fat Philipino, which had hot sauce and the white gyro sauce with it, or a Fat Koko, which had marinara and mozzerrella sticks in it.

The thing I MOST miss about Rutgers are those grease trucks.

As for the article: YOU. HAVE. GOT. TO. BE. KIDDING. ME.

I say mass protest! BRING THE FAT BITCH BACK! These bastards are screwing with the best Rutgers tradition out there! Great post. After reading it, I agree blocking off College Avenue would be a massive stupid idea. What swayed me were the parking spaces. The parking garage has way too few spaces in the first place (who really wants to park at Busch and take the fucking bus over?). Taking away College Ave spaces? That's almost criminal!

It looks really nice, but it doesn't make any mention of new traffic patterns or additions of parking decks. And the fact that the greening is considered "phase 1," I'm hoping that phase 2 and beyond isn't creating the new traffic situation (as in, first we green it, then when that's done, we figure out what to do with all these cars). I can't see how they can possibly be that stupid though...

Dola...

The administration has to accept the fact that Rutgers will never be like a traditional campus. When the NJ Turnpike, Route 1, Route 18, Route 295, and a major train station hub are all right around the school, it just isn't possible or practical.

The best way to improve the overall aestheticness of the school is for the town of NB (in cooperation with RU) to continue to develop the downtown area between College Ave and Douglass. That's where a large percentage of the crime that the school has been getting hammered with in the press over the past couple years is coming from. Once you get past the George Street Playhouse, you have a bunch of stores/houses/churches that are completely rundown with homeless/very poor people hanging around outside. Certain areas have started getting nicer, and the school/city is finishing up a massive project that includes a very nice apartment complex for students (similar style to where I live now--the Easton Ave Apts--but with an overall better look) that will be about 12 stories high, with a parking deck, as well as a convention center that should bring some money in. Problem is, right now nobody wants to live there because of the shitty conditions surrounding it. If they can clean that area up, and keep extending the renovations all the way to Douglass, THEN you will have a nice little area that you can be proud of. I'd rather see the "greening" money go towards this cause (or god forbid, to teacher salaries or classroom renovations).

ISiddiqui
02-23-2005, 09:47 PM
Yeah good luck on that ever happening though. There seems to be no political capital for doing so. The city of New Brunswick is run by a machine and they don't really give a damn about the area between Rutgers' campuses.

Logan
02-23-2005, 09:53 PM
Well, considering they will probably soon realize that they WASTED tens of millions of dollars with this new hall/complex because no one wants to live in a shitty area, they may wisen up and start sinking some money into the revitalization.

Easton can't even come close to picking up that slack. I would think adding just the car traffic would make it terrible, but its the buses that would be a disaster, particular the new accordian-style buses. You can't go through the major intersections on Easton because there are always jackasses who try and make lights that they shouldn't, and they end up blocking the intersections, which backs everyone up. These buses, which take a long damn time to make turns, would bring traffic to a standstill.

But they're not even talking about using Easton. They want to use Sicard. Yes, the thin cross-street that runs behind the gym and student center.

Sicard will be perfect. You call Skinny Vinny's on your way from Busch Campus, and he hands you the pizza right in the bus door while you head down to the next stop at the Voorhees Mall.

I haven't had a slice from Vinny in at least two years. That's the problem with it being located away from the bars.

I feel like since the RU contingent is present, and most likely no one reading this didn't at least spend some nights at RU, its time for an informal poll.

Best plain slice: PJs
Best special slice: Cheesesteak slice from Jimmy's
Best place to go when you need 4 slices: The "Orginal" Pizza City
Best late night special: Paulie's and their "Any kind of a slice we have for $1.25" from 1:30-3 on Thurs-Sat nights.
