Heard this song this morning. We've all heard the chuckles about what's ironic or not and whether the song should be re-titled "Isn't it a bummer?" But let's throw it around a bit...

Ironic: Poignantly contrary to what was expected or intended

Irony:
a. The use of words to express something different from and often opposite to their literal meaning.
b. An expression or utterance marked by a deliberate contrast between apparent and intended meaning.
c. A literary style employing such contrasts for humorous or rhetorical effect.
d. Incongruity between what might be expected and what actually occurs:
e. An occurrence, result, or circumstance notable for such incongruity.

So here's my breakdown of Alanis' list of things, ranked from most ironic (top) to least ironic. Discuss.

It's like ten thousand spoons when all you need is a knife
Mr. Play It Safe was afraid to fly, waited his whole damn life to take that flight, and crashed
It's a death row pardon two minutes too late
It's a free ride when you've already paid
It's a no-smoking sign on your cigarette break
It's a traffic jam when you're already late
It's meeting the man of my dreams, and then meeting his beautiful wife
It's like rain on your wedding day
An old man turned 98, won the lottery, and died the next day
It's the good advice that you just didn't take
It's a black fly in your Chardonnay

I'd put the traffic jam at the bottom.
