Looks very odd, and yes everyone seems to be in it.
Kind of reminds me of that Bruce Willis flop from awhile ago. The one with Milla Jovovich. not plot line wise, just the fact that it seems to be all Special Effects and looks like it will "tank" at the box office.

It's interesting that they are trying to do a direct interpretation of the comic onto the silver screen. I hope it works out.

Well he directed one of the segments and there was a big row between Rodriguez and SAG or some filmmaking group that has a rule against two directors being given credit for the same movie or something... It was retarded, but I guess they worked something out.
The movie looks cool. I have been looking forward to this for sometime.
The comics (graphic novels or whatever) are pretty amazing and it is supposed to be almost a shot-for-shot translation. I am all in favor for filmmakers to be a little experimental. Not sure what type of appeal it will have beyond the hardcore geek fan base. Hopefully it will do well, thought I am seeing "Sky Captain" type numbers in its future...
Still, a solid cast. The look is amazing. A great visual translation from the page to the screen. I can't wait.

Actually, from what I read, the big row was over Rodriguez appointing Frank Miller as co-director. The Directors Guild told him he couldn't do that, and he quit.

I must admit, though. I have never been all that impressed with Rodriguez as a director. A bunch of seemingly random gun fights and Ceech Marin in a bunch of different roles does not a motion picture make.

Robert Rodriguez ("Spy Kids," "Once Upon a Time in Mexico") and comic book icon Frank Miller co-direct "Sin City," based on the series of graphic novels created, written, and illustrated by Miller. "Sin City" is infested with criminals, crooked cops and sexy dames, some searching for vengeance, some for redemption and others, both. The film incorporates storylines from three of Miller's graphic novels including 'Sin City,' which launched the long-running, critically acclaimed series, as well as 'That Yellow Bastard' and 'The Big Fat Kill.'
Rodriguez, along with Miller, translated these legendary stories from page to screen by remaining absolutely faithful to the look, feel and dialogue of the books.
"Sin City" stars Bruce Willis as Hartigan, a cop with a bum ticker and a vow to protect stripper Nancy (Jessica Alba); Mickey Rourke as Marv, the outcast misanthrope on a mission to avenge the death of his one true love, Goldie (Jaime King), and Clive Owen as Dwight, the clandestine love of Shelley (Brittany Murphy), who spends his nights defending Gail (Rosario Dawson) and her Old Towne girls (Devon Aoki and Alexis Bledel) from Jackie Boy (Benicio Del Toro), a dirty cop with a penchant for violence.

No idea what the running time is, but there are basically three separate stories/plots, all set in "Sin City" in which there are some over-lapping characters and locations.
Basically you have the Mickey Rourke/Frodo story line (original "Sin City" book), the Bruce Willis story line ("That Yellow Bastard") and the Clive Owen/Benecio Del Toro story line ("The Big Fat Kill").
I am going to a talk Frank Miller and some other "graphic novelists" are giving at the Smithsonian this weekend. Should be interesting to hear what he has to say...

All the Sin City books are pretty much "self-contained". In other words, there isn't an "order" of books that you need to read; kind of like the Astro City books. The only real good Sin City book (IMHO), would be "That Yellow Bastard".

Don't get me wrong, I like Frank Miller's stuff -- especially '300' (can't wait for this movie, a la Gates of Fire, I think). For some reason, when I think of the "Sin City" books, "That Yellow Bastard" sticks out more to me than any of the others.
Kind of like Gaiman's one 'Sandman' book that always "stuck out" to me...erg. Can't recall the title...

Had no idea that Miller did a take on Thermopylae. I HAVE to hunt that down now, loved Gates of Fire.
Oh, and Sin City is shaping up to be the first movie I bother to see on opening night in about 3 years. I'm a sucker for noir though, and it doesn't get much more hard-boiled than this.
Going to read through all of the comics again before Friday. ;)
This is one I keep hearing where the reviewers seem to think those that read the comics will enjoy it, and those who haven't might not. Seems a bit topsy turvy from usual, but at least they're being pretty true to it.
I am curious to see how using the three storylines in one movie will work out, going to be tough to pull off well.

Just came back from seeing it and I liked it. I have not read all the graphic novels, just The Hard Goodbye and That Yellow Bastard. It was cool seeing some of the shots in the film being almost identical to the ones in the books.
Not sure how those unfamiliar with the novels are going to take it. It definately looked like a film for those wanting to see these characters in a movie.

Oddly enough I ended up seeing it twice today, which is something I don't think I've ever pulled off.
Saw it after class this morning with some friends from school, and then again this evening with some other friends, both times I loved it.
Definitely the most true to the book comic movie I've seen, stuck to the books very well from what I remember.
I thought the Big Fat Kill portion drug a bit in parts, but it was my least favorite of the 3 stories included by quite a bit anyway. A couple of the actors were painful to listen to, Brittany Murphy as Shellie jumps out in my mind as one. Rourke was great as Marv though, and I just love everything about the That Yellow Bastard storyline.
Man, I guess I didn't realize it before fully..but man oh man is Jessica Alba hot.
Anyway, if you like the graphic novels, go see it now...if you haven't read them, I can't give my full recommendation as I'm sure plenty of people will dislike it.
I'm rambling now, too tired to be coherent. Great film though, the visuals, the dialogue, everything.
Anyone know which scene it was Tarantino directed? I have some suspicions, but not sure on it.

I saw this movie last night. If you like comic books, you'll probably love this movie. If you don't like comic books you'll probably either not like it, or just appreciate it.
The movie is broken down into three short stories. The stories themselves are very comic book-like. There is lots of violence, lots of T&A, lots of corney jokes. The violence generally isn't too bad because the movie is 90% black and white.
The whole movie was shot in front of a green-screen, so the backgrounds all look exactly like a comic book. I went to see the movie with a fan of the original comics, and he said that the movie was a *very* faithful reproduction of the comics.
If you love comics, and this comic in particular, go see the movie. If you can appreciate a stylistic movie, see this movie during a matinee. If you just like movies and want to be entertained, you might want to wait for a rental.

It was a lot better than I thought it'd be. Although there were some parts I didn't necessarily like so much, I was never bored. It was strange because I think any of the stories individually made into a movie wouldn't have been that great, but all three together made it all make sense somehow. Also the theatre was totally packed on a Saturday afternoon.

I had high hopes for this movie. Huge. Been looking

IT WAS SWEET!!!
Met all expectations. Brilliant film. It looked
great. Really brought the comics to the screen, panel
for panel. Rourke, Willis, and Owen were perfect as
the leads. Perfect. Though, let's be honest, Mickey
Rourke was the man. Then again, he was Marv, and he's
Miller's meatiest character (in every sense of the
word) by far...
I will be seeing it again for sure.

Well, if she's into lots of violence and gore and naked women then that's the movie for her ;)
I dunno. I found myself kindof enjoying it in parts and parts of it just kindof blah. I loved Mickey Rourke as Marv, THE INCREDIBLEy HULKy guy. Clive Owens character was pretty good, too. Actually, most of the characters were good (Murphy's was one of the few exceptions), even the minor ones. The style was cool. But, I couldn't get past the presentation of the plot. Lots of stuff happened, big events, but the way it was told just made it seem ho-hum in my mind, sucking all the poignancy out of the big scenes. And by the end of the movie, there was so much useless violence and blood that I was just kindof desensitized when I got to the yellow guy story. So while I'm glad I saw it because there's some good stuff in it, it's got some problems that made me not thoroughly enjoy it.

Not a date movie. :)
I was disappointed, probably because of the buildup. It was okay, but the story wasn't good enough to tolerate all of the violence. I liked Marv's story a lot and enjoyed seeing a "lot" of Carla Gugino. It just seemed like most of the characters, with the exception of Rourke's, took themselves a little too seriously.
BTW, what was is the backstory on Hartnett's character? Is he featured in another graphic novel or something?
