Played 18 holes last night and really like it. Its along the lines of Tiger Woods Golf, where you gain experience and allocate your XP points and you win money that you can use for green fees, clubs, clothes, food, etc.
Maybe we can get some FOFC'ers into this and then we can conduct a tourney or two :) Id be glad to help anyone out, if needed. Its follows the fairly standard golf game construct, you click the ball to start your swing, click it again to stop the power meter, then you click again for accuracy (or hook). You can add spin etc, like any other golf game. You arent good to start out with of course, its a RPG.

Apparently I'm better at putting from 20 yards out than I am from 10 yards. I also can't hit anything with the irons. It is too weak of a shot such that the ball falls short of the target or too strong that it bounces over it.

Putting is really hard, at least for me. Couple things, if you havent already figured it out yet...
the moving highlights on the green grid: The faster they move, the higher degree of angle. The direction they move indicates the direction of the slope. Practice figuring out slope by reading the highlights only, if they aint moving, its basically a dead in putt.
If you want to bring up the green grid lines at anytime (for like chip shots so you can tell how the green looks), use Alt-G.
for all the new players, using the tab key to setup all of your shots is critical. Also, when allocating points, ignore the endurance/stamina stat completely. You can sit on a bench or drink a power drink to regain stamina at anytime, so the fatigue stat is pretty useless right now.

really fast, you should get to lvl 8 by the end of your first 18 holes.
I just made level 14, but I play with lower level people all the time. The beginner course is pretty easy, so it remains competitive for most all lvl's & handicaps.

You can set the shot timelimit to 60, 45, 30 and 15 seconds. So it would at maximum take 60sec a hole per player, but in reality people take about 20 seconds to setup and take their shot. I played 18 holes with a 4 some last night in about 35-40 minutes. Seems like most people prefer a 45 second counter, and im rarely bored waiting for my turn to shoot.
Match play and skin play of course go much faster.

Yea actually, you do get a bonus for playing with better people. So if you get a bogey and some lvl20 with a -1 hdcp gets a bogey with you on the same hole, you might get some exp. I dont know 100% how it works, but its along those lines.
Winning match play holes and skins also gives you XP.

I cannot judge a putt / chip distance to save my soul.
Here is what helped me on putting:
10% = 2yds
almost NEVER hit less than 20% though
Anyone up for a game now? Ive got some spare time in my office tonight (Im stuck here for another 3 hours because its parent-teacher conference night and I almost never get any parents).

I cannot judge a putt / chip distance to save my soul.
A 100% putt on a flat green is around 20yds. I have not seen a putt miss because it is moving too fast, so anything under 3yds can be hit straight and fairly hard.
I think a full SW hits about 47yds off of the fairway? You can play the precentages from there. The toughest shots are the 9yd chips off of the fairway. The swing meter moves to quickly for any kind of accuracy.
The other big tip seems to be to hit short on all approach shots and try to use backspin. The green never seems to hold and everything rolls a lot. I'm guessing that will be better when we get to higher levels and our backspin becomes more effective.

I am completely lost. I keep going to the practice course, I pay my green fees and then I can't do anything other than hit the same drive off the tee. It's like the game doesn't progress. I hit my drive, it tells me how far it went, and then I go again.
I was able to get to lvl 8 playing on the beginner course, but what happens when I run out of my free admissions? How doI earn other admissions? Do they cost a certain amount of Ng's?
If this is explained in the help, could someone please point me in the right direction?
Thanks.

Weird things happening for me here.
I played the tutorial just fine. Then I was played out the 3 practice holes with np. Now I am on the grass, and the icons keep flashing on and off. They won't stay up long enough for me to see what to do next, so I finally found how to exit. I'll try again, but I am wondering if this is my video card acting up?

I installed the thing but there's something that's not right with it. The text is all garbled, as if it only showed the first three letters of every sentences. Like whe I go to connect, if I enter my username in the field, it'll read something like "qcfqcfqcfqcf" in stead of what I'm typing which is "qcfrogman". Also the button on the right, which I assume should read "confirm" reads "conconcon" and tha "cancel" button read "cancancan"...
Anyway, you see what I mean. I'm able to enter my username and password, and the second screen is much of the same, can't read anything... Didn't spend much time troubleshooting it, but I saw some other people reporting it on their forums...
Anybody else had this problem? If so, did you fix it and how?

The first time you log into the game it goes thru the tutorial and explains the difference between the Beginners Course and the Practice Course, im not sure if there is anymore clarification beyond that. Practice course is just a few different practice scenarios: putting green, chipping green, drive range and the actual single golfer practice course. The practice course has its own FAQ that you can get to when youre on that course, but basically on the practice course you can move the ball anmywhere by right clicking on the minimap where you want to drop the ball, then you just practice your shot. You dont get any XP or NG from putzing around on the practice course, but you do from completing the skill challenges on the putting, chipping and driving ranges.
Sounds like you found the Beginners course ok, which is where all the main action goes down (at least for everyone under LVL 20). The green fee for any match on the Beginners course is 1,000 NG (match, skin, stroke - regardless how many holes.. 3, 6, 9, or 18 = 1,000 NG). If you hit just a couple good shots, youre going to make back your green fee pretty quik. So it seems like the beginners course free admissions you start out with are just to get you going, after you play a 18 or more holes with a group, youre going to have a lot of NG.
Hope that helps!

I am starting to develope a nice touch on this game now. My handicap is down to 13, but in the last 12 holes I played, I got 10 pars and 2 bogeys. Up to level 11. It takes a bit of time to get a feel for the distances and putting, and playing the same course over and over forces you to learn the best way to play different holes.
I am ready for the FOFC Tour!

I had a problem with text similar to yours, FM. I wasn't gettting the same letters repeating, but about halfway into the sentence, it would...double up. It would print two different lines on top of each other. It wasn't enough to bother me and I could usually figure out what it was trying to say.
I don't imagine it's a problem with your graphic card not being able to handle the load, but it does sound like it might be a driver issue. You might want to reinstall the drivers and see if that clears it up.

Yeah, after I just gave up on the practice course, I was able to get in a few rounds with a couple other people. Seems odd that the beginners course is so cheap to play, having really only played maybe 3-4 rounds, I'm sitting at about 70k. Can't figure out why they have the free admissions. Thanks for the help.

I haven't spent anything because I didn't know how much the green fees for the beginner course was. Now that I do, I may be investing in some clubs, but I haven't been able to figure out what benefits you get from the shoes and gloves. Might be just a cosmetic thing to go along with the RPG portion of the game.
However, I don't get the RPG portion of the game yet at all either. I'm not sure why the designer wanted to make it an RPG instead of simply a great grand golf game. There could have been tours, from expert to beginner. Leagues made up of friends or public leagues. Could have had a wager tour, no prize money, just win whatever you can from the other player.

Ive been holding on to my NG's till I hit lvl 20, when you can finally buy new clubs. From what ive seen, new clubs run 100k plus.
The RPG portion of the game is just the advancement of your players skill stats, beyond that it looks like they have some sort of quest system - but its not available yet. I imagine that will be used for completing certain skill challenges, unless they want me to go hunt 10 ground hogs?
Handley, there are tours and everything else you mention (maybe not right this second, but all of that is planned from what i understand). I believe you have to be lvl 20+ to compete in the championship series tour. A Skin game is a great way to win money, I won 9k a hole for 9 holes yesterday! :)

From what I can tell there are 2 ways. (1) increase your impact rating and (2) right click on the golf ball (the same one you click to swing), moving the red dot to the bottom of the ball.
I'm a beginner still, so take that advise with a grain of salt.

The support on the game is pretty sparse right now, the generic answer is to make sure your graphics card drivers and directx are completely up to date. Ive seen a few problems similar to yours get resolved this way, but im not finding anyone with the exact same problem as you :/

Your not going to be able to put any noticeable backspin on the ball until you get your characters stats up, same applies to draws, fades and putting to a smaller degree.

Ive got a few tips.
1. Your handicap only changes when you play 18 holes. Doesnt look like playing any other number affects it, but I am not sure if you havent played any holes yet.
2. Stats - There are three stats that you should become familiar with. Power, Skill and Impact. Stamina is the 4th skill, but it is worthless right now since energy drinks will decrease your fatigue. Power makes your shots go farther, impact makes them go higer, and this causes your balls to bounce less on the greens and also when you are not dead on, your balls will hook and slice less. Skill allows you to put more draw and fade on your ball. A ratio of about 3 power: 2 impact : 2 skill is a pretty good ratio for new players.
3. Clubs Dont bother buying the level 21 clubs, everyone agrees they are worthless. Go for the lvl25 clubs which are 900,000. Everyone says to only get the irons and wedges. There are two types of clubs worth buying I believe +6 power -6 impact, and -6 power +6 impact. decide which clubs you plan to buy, and focus on improving the other stat more to compensate. I dont know the ratios, but they dont match your skill levels.
4. 2 piece vs. 3 piece balls - 2 peice balls are said to be more stable, and 3 piece goes farther. I wouldnt buy 3 piece balls until you reach a higher level, and have more impact skill to compensate.
5. Putters - AFAIK the better putters only seem to increase your range, so this may not be worth upgrading IMO
6. Clouds decrease your range by 10% or so.
8. Use the tab key to show where your ball will land. Use Alt-G to show the slope. If you hit alt-G then hold down just the G key as your let go of Alt, the slope meter will stick.
7. Finally, dont try to overplay, as a beginner your range sucks, and so does your aim. Don't get fancy. Just aim for the middle of the greens, lay up short on par 5's that you cant drive to in 3. And always aim for the front of the green. Your ball will really bounce starting out, especially with the lower numbered clubs. Doing this alone should help. These tips have all helped my game, which has gone from a +28 handicap down to a +12 handicap :)

I'll be upgrading my skill over the next few levels, in tandem with power. Target is 33-11-(6)-11 for me. I usually play pretty darn well and blow a good score on one hole. It's aggraviting. Yesterday I left a tee shot hanging on the lip on hole #3 of the Beginner's course (the A one whatever the name is). And then last night I knocked one in from about 90 yds out. If I could just stop tilting off 8-11 shots on one random hole, I'd be doing great.
In answer of why I like this better than Tiger Woods, it is deeper, more open ended, and more fun. I actually think the ball physics when the ball contacts the ground are much better, and the method for reading green contour is terrific. Putting is much more dynamic and challenging than in Tiger (when I could pretty much make a putt at will - maybe it could get that way in this game, but it sure isn't showing any signs of it for me). I also like the fact that this game will be evolving and changing over time, adding new elements, events, etc. The way it is looking, if this isn't too expensive, I will probably be paying when the beta ends. Only if it is fairly cheap, though.

9 Impact
8 Skill

I disagree with almost all of that. Interesting. I have only played a couple of rounds of shot-online, but I find the physics to be much better in TW. I like that I can choose what type of shot to hit (flop, chip, pitch, etc), and much prefer the True-swing type of play to the click three times swing method in S-O. I'll agree that putting is more difficult (at least so far), but I don't really like to 4 or 5 putt green so that's not really a bonus for me.
I'll probably give s-o another try, but so far I prefer the realism in TW.

well, if you master putting in only a couple rounds what fun would that be?

I have still never made a long putt. I did play against someone that nailed a number of 15-20 yard putts, but that was the only person I've seen put well. The contour of the green everywhere between the ball and the hole affect the putt. This is realistic and makes it pretty difficult. I've also noticed that aiming with the arrow keys is not as good as using the mouse for putting. I was on the practice green where you get the same putt over and over, and I could never make the 20-yd putt by aiming with the arrows.
A nice iron-shot tip is to watch the weather. Clouds really do drop 10% of your distance, and sun and > 27C temperature does add 10% to your shot. The wind definitely moves the ball as well. Lots of factors involved in lining up the perfect shot.
Do people swing with the mouse buttons, or the spacebar? I've found the spacebar to be much more responsive, but that could just be my laptop mouse buttons.

Just so you know, You only get double experience, if you start your match during the dbl exp timeframe. If your already in a match, it doesnt affect it. If you wait around until just before the event starts, then go in, your guaranteed to get a match with some people that have more levels than you. This will give you even more Exp if they shoot a good round also.

Also, would people be interested in a Fofc tournament? I am thinking about having a tourney where everyone submits their 4 best rounds via a screenshot. Another thing we could do is have a skins tournament. Make the stakes low like 1000 or 2000 a hole, and play like 9 holes or something. I think it would be a lot easier to schedule a skins tournament then it would be to schedule a strokes tournament played live.

The only reason I like the second tournament is cash is involved :D It would be really different to do the first type of tournament for money.

Once in the world screen, everything is screwed up. Game freezes for a few seconds (very often), the icons aren't appearing, my character can't been seen on the screen, FAQ's list isn't there. Every once in a while, things will appear correctly for a half a second. I have to hover my mouse over where the beginners course icon should be, and catch it at the right moment when it appears. If I click while it's there, it let's me on the course. Once I get on the course, everything plays perfectly fine.
My PC specs all meet the recommended. I have the latest directx drivers.
My video card is NVIDIA RIVA TNT2 Model 64 Pro. I tried downloading the correct drivers from NVIDIA's website, and I found the file that says it supports this model, but when I run the program it says it can't find any drivers compatible with my hardware. Any ideas?

Okay, for the first tournament, it will go on from now, until this friday at 11:59pm cst. Send your screen captures to me at Airhogg at yahoo dot com. Include the level you were at when you took the first capture as that will determine which group you play in. I decided to alter the levels a bit. 1-13 is the lower level, and 14+ is the higher level. I think most scores start to come down around there. You can play alone or in a group, it just has to be all 18 holes, and a stroke match.
The skins match will take some more work, and I'd like some more input before forging ahead.

Here is an idea for a skins match, though it might be tough to get everyone together at the same time...
8 players split into 2 groups, Skin amount =x. Course = alfheim.
Top 2 skins winners from each 4-some go on to play in the finals, Skin amount = 2x, course = Felsair.
Edit: or for ease of scheduling purposes get 8 participants and have a single elimination skins tournament (like ncaa brackets where the skins match is just heads up). Take the first 8 sign ups, randomly seed people and see who wins (this is more like match play, but same concept.)
Airhog
04-18-2005, 04:32 PM
I love the second idea. Since you wouldnt have to play them all at the same time.
Im thinking that it might be fun to double the amount for each hole, each round. Like 1000ng the first round 2000ng the second round and 4000ng the final round. Although instead of 18 holes, 9 may work better here.

Great Game Marmel. Im gonna try to make it tomorrow night. However, those 3 hour games are killing me. Maybe i should reduce the clock to 30 seconds :D

Yes, another great match lastnight.
They are running a bit long. I don't have a problem with a 30 second clock.

I'd be more inclined to play if we played 9 holes.
That being said, I may be home tonight and tomorrow night available to tee it up.

I am playing worst and worst and need a new start. I gave myself way too many points on stamina and skill as well, which really makes my player suck. :(
It is fun trying to level up again though.
Airhog
04-22-2005, 11:32 PM
Marmel: I would reccomend going with a 4:3 ratio of power:stamina, or a 3:2 ratio. I think a good number for skill is probably 15 at the most, at least until you get fairly high, but thats just my opinion there. You might read some of the threads over at the Shot online Pro club. They have some good advice on character builds. I consider myself lucky that I never pumped any stats into stamina, but my skill is 13. I dont consider it a liability at all though, and I can notice a difference between that and when I had it at 9 or 10.

I'm playing with Neuq and already am doing much better at level 9. Thanks for the advice Airhog, I reading some of those threads and realized I wasted a lot of points.

Im just starting to get pissed at the game some. I hate how the slightest uphill lie affects your ball way to much. It also discourages me to see them add new content, but not fix some of the obvious bugs with the game. Thats really my biggest pet peeve. I still need to hook up with Mj4H and play our round.

Are people still playing this??
Is there any benefit to wearing clothes? Glove? Shoes, etc... at levels below 21 or so?? Nothing I have seen gives any bonus to the wearer, or maybe that will be added later.
(BTW, I finally got a hole-in-one. Gives you a $100,000 bonus.)
I started over as I screwed the point alocation with 'thealmighty.' Now playing as AlMighty if anyone wants to round (as they call it).

No, theres no benefit to wearing *most* of the clothing, there are some that give stat bonuses, but everything else is cosmetic only.
I saw the ticker go by when you got the hole in one! I tried to congratulate you, but I think i misspelled your name. Congrats! I hit one not too long ago too, on that same hole. It gives so much XP, it even lvl'd up the other 3 people i was playing with =)

I've been playing just about every day. Shot a -6 yesterday which is my best score yet.
I play about every other day or so. I'm 95% of the way to level 23 right now. My handicap is now -3.
I'm level 8 now, but my handicap is still 28... shot an 86 today.

Questions for whomever...
Where do you go to play when you are tired of Alf/Fen (what course)?
I was on a bench when I got a popup that said "SOSO wants to trade with you. Do you accept?" Is this legit or a scam (or 50% one, 50% other)? If I accept without knowledge of what it is, can I get screwed, or is there a negate in the window?
Thanks.
(I am level 18, if it matters)

Got down to -10 on Alfheim after an amazing birdie run and a chip in Eagle from about 100 yards out. Then completely choked and fell to -6 before getting a bird on the 18th and finishing at -7, an all time best for me.

Posted my first under par round yesterday. Of course, I still hit into the trees or a bunker WAY too much.
I'm level 12 now, shot an 82 on Alfheim... it felt more of an achievement when I managed to shoot 98 on one of the intermediate courses, I think it was the parklands course, whatever it's called... :p damn those are hard!
No clue what's going on. I'm "vexroid".

I played a 9 hole course with 3 people during lunch, that worked out pretty nice, took just about an hour. I made it to level 5. I was up against a level 14 and a level 21, the level 21 was inept with the putter, I thought I had a chance to beat him, but in the end I was +8 and he was +4. I'm up to over 10,000 ng after pretty much just this and a round of putting last night giving me cash.

Is there any advantage playing with amateur clubs instead of beginner clubs after reaching amateur status? I know there is no increase in stats, but do they "play" better since it matches my status? Just wondering because since I hit Lvl. 21, it seems to me that I'm not able to move the ball in the air as much as I used to.
Anyone still playing? I just started up a few days ago and I love it, although I'm horrible.

Ok, anyone still with this, I have a question?
What clubs did you get (woods, irons, wedges, putter?) when you got to level 25, or whenever you bought some new ones? I just hit 25 and need some sage advice.
Thanks.

Buy the whole lvl 25 iron set, SW, AW, PW (SW is used the most, i rarely use the AW/PW), stick with the stock putter, driver and woods. If you can afford the stat impact the 3w or 5w gives you, they are worth it, but just barely.

Level 11 still, haven't played much in a week or so, but i just played alfheim solo to get a quick round in, and shot +3, by far my best yet. Only 4 bogeys and FINALLY a birdie on 18, after missing 4 birdie putts and 1 par putt by less than a yard on 5 consecutive holes starting around hole 8. That dropped my handicap from +22 to +12, fun fun! Hopefully tomorrow night I can play 18 in a group and get a level or two.
Ugh, I hate the 18th hole on Alfheim. I always end up hitting a tree and getting OOB.
