What the hell is this?
Serenity: Those Left Behind
Joss Whedon, the pop-culture mastermind behind Buffy the Vampire Slayer, bridged the gap between his cult-hit Firefly TV series and his Serenity motion picture with this three-issue miniseries. Serenity: Those Left Behind is a previously unknown chapter in the lives of these space brigands, and a must-read for avid Whedon fans and Browncoats alike.

It's a series of 3 comics that he wrote before Serenity was released. Takes place in between the end of Firefly and the beginning of Serenity.

Can't say I overly enjoyed the series or was a regular viewer when it was on the air. I've since rewatched the series on DVD, and it was better than I originally remembered. The only reason I revisited the series on DVD was because I did really like the movie -- a lot more so than I did the original show. And the only reason I went to see the movie was because my wife wanted to go see it, and she never watched the original show.

Hell, they can simply make Wash's death a staged thing where Tam injected him with something to make him appear dead as part of a future caper. Maybe only he and Mal knew about it so the others would buy it and at convincing like.
I could see a bunch of fallout from this trickery (Zoe would probably rip his nuts off) and it would be forgivable because we would need Wash back for the series to continue.

How would they fake a giant spear through his gut?

I agree with those who thought the series was better than the movie. I liked the movie, but not nearly as much as certain individual episodes on the show.
I can't see how they would continue sans Wash and Book. Well, Book would be easier, but I don't think I'd want to see the crew without Wash. He's the heart of the show.
I also would not be crazy about a show featuring a River uber-weapon. That'd get boring really quick.
Man, I miss that show. It's not really fair to compare "Firefly" to longer running shows, because it didn't have time to screw up, but it was just awesome.

It's the future, can't they do anything they want? :D
I'm sure Whedon could figure out some interesting twist that won't resemble a soap opera plot.

Waste of time IMHO. Wasn't that good. Essentially, the last frame of the comic book was the blue gloved guys telling the mercenary to find River.

Do what they did in Beer Fest. Just bring him back as a 'twin' and just call him Wash.

I have to agree that the comics were pretty "meh," though they do give some insight into way the preacher and Inara are not on the ship when the film starts.

Just want to see that thanks to Netflix and the recommendations here I am now a Serenity / Firefly fan. Unfortunately I watched the movie first and am now going through the series, but what the hey.

Yeah, that's what I did too. It's still cool though, I just wish there was more!

Interesting thread.
* Terminator did actually make it more than one season (2).
* Box office for the movie fell short of $40m.
* There will never be a sequel.
* Whedon did actually work with Fox again after Serenity, after saying he wouldn't in 2005.
For years I put off watching Firefly/Serenity because of the fanboys. How could a show that didn't even make it one season be any good, and what's the point in even watching it? I didn't even know which came first ... the movie or the show.
The movie happened to be on TV a few months ago on a lazy weekend so my wife and I watched it. Thought it was pretty much good. We ended up watching it again. Then recently there was some type of Firefly marathon so we recorded all the episodes. We watched 6 of them last night. We LOVE the show ... even my wife loved it, and she HATES HATE HATES the sci-fi spaceshipy types of movies/shows (I love them).
It's kind of depressing watching the series knowing it ends.

Welcome to the party. Don't get depressed, just know that for a few episodes something special was on TV and enjoy what time you have with the cast of Firefly. It's the only TV series I've ever purchased and even now we throw in an episode now and then.
You're right in all of your facts, though Serenity did make money for the studio after DVD sales and overseas box office receipts are included.
And who knows? Star Trek went 10 years between the last episode and the first movie, so it's possible that another movie could be created. I don't hold out much hope for that, but it's always possible...

Firefly reunion being taped at Comic-Con
http://insidetv.ew.com/2012/07/11/firefly-reunion-tv-special/
Firefly is getting a shiny new TV special.
To celebrate the cult-favorite sci-fi drama’s 10th anniversary, Science Channel is shooting a new one-hour special chronicling the Firefly cast reunion at Comic-Con this week.
The special — titled Browncoats Unite — will include footage from Friday’s reunion panel, featuring several members of the original team including star Nathan Fillion and creator Joss Whedon. Plus, the cast is shooting an in-depth behind-the-scenes roundtable interview that will dive deeper into burning fan questions about the beloved series. Both the panel and the roundtable will be moderated by Entertainment Weekly‘s own Jeff Jensen.

“Firefly is a landmark work of science fiction and a favorite with our viewers,” said Debbie Myers, general manager and executive vp of Science. “Ever since it premiered on Science, fans have asked us to do something special to mark its 10-year anniversary. With this signature celebration, punctuated by Browncoats Unite, we will connect the minds behind this classic franchise with its legions of passionate fans.”
In addition to Whedon and Fillion, Friday’s 12:30 p.m. Comic-Con panel will feature Alan Tudyk, Summer Glau, Adam Baldwin, Sean Maher, showrunner Tim Minear, and writer Jose Molina. The special, produced by Pangolin Pictures, promises to unearth defining memories and first-person accounts of making the show from both sides of the camera. Browncoats Unite will air on Science, along with an all-day marathon of Firefly episodes, on Sunday, Nov. 11.

There is absolutely no point in that now since they killed off two of the best characters (and best actors) in the group. That was so bad a decision. It basically crippled them from any chance of a normal reboot.
Kevin Smith was initially going to kill Dante Dante at the end of the first Clerks but was talked out of it. Oh how I wish someone talked Joss out of it. Cause it really didn't add anything to the movie killing them. Wasn't really that dramatic apart from Shephard's death speech. Pffff.
Maybe holograms or something. Cause without those two I would not find as much reason to watch. Just the Jayne and Zoe show then.

While I agree that a "re-boot" would be tough without Wash and Shepard, I am not sure anyone would ever consider Shepard one of the "best actors" on the show. I thought the character we very interesting and would have loved to learn more about his background, but if you had to kill one guy...
Losing Wash is too big a blow. He was the "heart" of the show. I was numb for the last 20 minutes of the movie the first time I saw it.

I really liked the Assassin guy in the movie. I had no ties to the original series, so killing off Wash didn't affect me at all I thought it made for a much better story to the movie.

That's why Whedon said he did it, but in a way he punished us die hards (who likely comprised at least 80%, if not more, of ticet sales) for the sake of all you Johnny-Come-Latelies!

LOL right. Well in fairness to summer glau, she really didn't have much to do aside from looking freaked out all the time. But the other 3 (Doctor, engineer, rich person) were just really really bland actors especially in comparison to Zoe who was a VERY strong character and very strong actress. Maybe for the reboot of the series they can replace those 3 and thus make the ensemble as a whole stronger.

""""""""""""""""""". Mal was the driving force, but Wash was the heart of the show. You can see it in every episode, whether its Out of Gas or even Jaynestown.

Killing off Wash was brilliant. Whedon killed off the seemingly least likely character to die. It completely raises the stakes of the final action sequence. After Wash dies, you think that potentially anyone can die at the end. Kaylee getting shot has completely different stakes if Wash hadn't died (especially since she's been shot and healed before). After Joss killed off Wash, I thought it very likely that he'd kill Kaylee too.

My GF and I got within 500 attendees in line of getting into this. Just sucks to miss it. Comic Con has gotten more and more crowded, it seems. I got in line at 7:45 a.m. specifically for this show at 12:30 p.m., and we still missed it. So that sucked.
At least we'll get to see it on TV and DVD when the docu comes out.
