Mentioned that to my wife and she was amazed that I'd never heard of that rumor before, apparently everybody knows about Dark Side of the Moon and Oz. But I didnt.
So no, I watched to it with the correct soundtrack. And it was great, 9/10, would watch again next Christmas.

Saltburn- 7/10 I think maybe I would have rated it higher if it hadn't been so over-hyped before I saw it. There was definitely some sexual cringe to this movie, but it wasn't nearly as daring and shocking as people lead me to believe. The acting was solid and the cinematography was outstanding so there is much to like about the movie. In the end, the sexual shock was about the only shock in the story as I could see each of the main story points coming from a mile away. Good movie that was just less impresive than expected.

The Aristocrats-- 10/10
This is a documentary about the greatest joke ever told. It goes into how the joke is an inside joke amongst comedians that has two likes to remember, but can go as long as you want it and it goes in any direction.
It features some great comedians and if you are a comedy fan, this is a must see.

Watched Everything Everywhere All At Once. There was a great movie in there, but they spent 90 minutes of it being weird for the sake of being weird. And this is from someone who enjoys weird. There is no way you can convince me that was the best movie of 2022.

Asteroid City
I enjoy Wes Anderson, so if you like his works then you'll already feel at home with his style and tropes.
That being said, I by far, loved this movie than some of his other works. I actually laughed at parts which I didn't really do in prior films and there were parts that perhaps were maudlin or meant to make the viewer emotional, but they worked for me. (I enjoyed Fantastic Mr. Fox which had some of the same beats/tone but is not an original Anderson work).
Just like Grand Budpest or Royal Tennenbaums or French Dispatch, there is the movie and then there is the media where the story comes from (i.e. Royal Tennabaums is a book, Grand Budapest has a documentary cut into it, French Dispatch is stories in a New Yorker style magazine). In Asteroid, it's a tv show documentary, on the creation of the play of the actual movie. So yeah, layers, but I never felt confused.
I didn't pick up on it until reading some other reviews, but this is Anderson COVID movie (there is a quarentine) and this is probably Anderson's biggest movie about life and death and the future of art ( plays, films, etc), which I think French Dispatch also wrestled with but moreso with printed media as opposed to theartical/tv/cinema.
The biggest mantra in the film is something along the likes of "you wake up if you don't fall asleep" which I suppose is like you have accept that you will die in order to learn how to live. Which may have been my deeper than it is opinion, but there is much about "we don't know what we don't know" which is brought up a few times in the film when questions on what is important, or why certain characters did certain actions in the film, they don't know, but perhaps that is it, we just don't know and we don't need to.
It's a brighter film than most of his other works. It's a Western backdrop to a science fiction theme, but it's about family and love and loss.
I never felt bored or lost with this work. Perhaps I'm immune to the tics that annoy other viewers of Anderson's work.
The best line that reverberated with me "If you wanted to live a nice quiet peaceful life, you picked the wrong time to get born". I think that can be said for all generations.
I think it's one of his best works.
9 out of 10.

I kind of had the exact opposite response to this movie. I watched it with my girlfriend the yesterday and we both had no idea what this movie was suppose to be about or why it was suppose to be entertaining. The movie's message was "there" but we didn't exactly find it profound or anything like that.
There's a few jokes here and there we laughed to but the most fun I had in this movie was trying to remember the names of all the actors that show up in this. And there a LOT of well known actors.

Oppenheimer - 8/10
Thoroughly enjoyed the first 2+ hours. But the last 45 min (?) post war stuff was weird to me. But big thumbs up for being entertained & learning a lot of history. Matt Damon was solid. Loved the Trinity test stuff. Didn't know Heisenberg was part of the Nazi nuke program. Loved the Einstein cameos. Yeah, much preferred it over Barbie.
FWIW, didn't know Oppenheimer was that "randy". Always imagined top Physicists to be ... disinterested.
That post war story did seem to be accurate.
In December 1953, Strauss informed Oppenheimer that his security clearance had been stripped, but the physicist appealed the decision to a three-member panel that launched a month-long hearing in April 1954. After a one-sided proceeding in which Oppenheimer’s lawyers were blocked from accessing confidential material, the panel acknowledged he was a loyal citizen but voted 2 to 1 to revoke his security clearance.
The decision left Oppenheimer’s reputation in tatters. “He was a man of peace, and they destroyed him. He was a man of science, and they destroyed this man,” lamented close friend and fellow physicist Isidor Isaac Rabi.
Five years later, Strauss paid a price for Oppenheimer’s blacklisting. When Eisenhower appointed Strauss as U.S. secretary of commerce, the Senate rejected his nomination after a bitter confirmation hearing in which his treatment of Oppenheimer played a critical role. Strauss was only the eighth Cabinet nominee in U.S. history—and the only one between 1925 and 1989—who failed to win confirmation. Following the defeat, Strauss focused on philanthropic ventures until his death in 1974.
Not sure how accurate the Oppenheimer-Truman meeting really was though. But good scene.
“Mr. President,” he said, “I feel I have blood on my hands.”
Oppenheimer’s biographers in “American Prometheus” recounted how Truman would later retell the incident: “Over the years, Truman embellished the story. By one account, he replied, 'Never mind, it’ll all come out in the wash.' In yet another version, he pulled his handkerchief from his breast pocket and offered it to Oppenheimer, saying, 'Well, here, would you like to wipe your hands?'”
Ultimately, “American Prometheus” posits the most likely response Truman gave to Oppenheimer was a bit less dramatic. “I told him the blood was on my hands — to let me worry about that,” Truman allegedly said to a colleague.
However it went down, the exchange destroyed any collegiality the men might have formed. Truman stood up to signal the meeting was over, and Oppie walked out defeated. “Blood on his hands, dammit, he hasn’t half as much blood on his hands as I have,” Truman was overheard saying afterward. “You just don’t go around bellyaching about it.”

Sheesh. Pretty bad acting, mediocre plot. Rehashing that Manta-ray guy, better if they went with something new.
Momoa also sucked in the latest Fast & Furious. Much better for him to be a silent, bad guy type vs trying to be funny.

Zone of Interest (4/10) - I get what they were doing with this movie (I think), but it's a real slow watch. Feels like it would have worked better as a short film. Has no business in Best Picture territory although should be up for awards in other categories like sound. I guess I left the movie not knowing whether I regret watching it or not. Interestig concept but overly pretentious.
Madame Web (1/10) - Maybe one of the worst movies I've ever seen. Somehow worse than Morbius. We left after about an hour because it was just really boring and didn't seem to be going anywhere. An impressive feat to make me not want to look at Sydney Sweeney. I have no clue how this movie got made or how they thought they could release it to the public.

I've seen some stuff online with people asking how something could be so bad without being "bad-good". Additionally, I suspect part of the problem is that Dakota Johnson appears to have no on-screen charisma across any of the roles she's played, a trait she appears to share with other nepo babies like Bryce Dallas Howard, Colin Hanks, Scott Eastwood, O'Shea Jackson Jr. and Kate Hudson, among others.

It was okay, not as good as Hunter Games #1 and #2. Probably on par with #3, one of those that doesn't need another movie in the series. Time to just let it fade into teenage legacy fandom.
Acts I and II were okay. It fell off at Act III.

We finished them all Friday. Our rankings would be different. I enjoyed Past Lives but Poor Things was a bit too weird. I did like Stone a lot. Killers of the Flower Moon was too long. Maestro and Zone of Interest were terrible. Barbie is what t is. I thought it was fabulous. The holdovers is probably my favorite. Acting was great and I loved the stories of the different players. Oppenheimer was excellent and probably worthy of the win. Love Murphy. Anatomy of a fall was just good. I loved American Fiction. Great blend of humor and serious content.

Dune 2 - 8/10
A good-to-great movie. I'll be adding it to my 4k collection this BF.
I watched Dune but it is always hard to watch the betrayal (Red Wedding anyone?) and the fall. Dune 2 was more action oriented which I appreciated.
I look forward but also dread any sequels. I never liked Dune books #2 or #3, it got too philosophical thingy for me.

Really enjoyed Dune 2. One hell of a movie from a craft perspective, and as someone who loved the book, it's always great to see it depicted on screen pretty much the way you imagined it (LOTR was the same for me).
I do worry about prequels or additional sequels. It's pretty tricky stuff to adapt, given all of the weird concepts and narration in the book that provides exposition that doesn't really translate to the screen. Villeneuve is categorically a great director and I worry that suits will look at what he was able to achieve and think that most anyone can do it, and that's just not going to be true.

I was surprised that I enjoyed the movie. I know I won’t be rewatching it every couple years but thinking about getting the 4k for the specials.
Adam Driver was pretty good. He can pull off less emotional characters but don’t think he is as adaptable to other roles.

My Wife and I are on sort if a nostalgia kick, at least sort of. When we started talking about watching "Roadhouse" I learned that she had never seen it, which I felt was blasphemy. The I learned she had never seen "Footloose". Instead of just divorcing her, I decide to correct her short comings with love.
Footloose- 8.5/10 It still holds up well. It is definitely has to be watch as a period piece, but the story of narrow-minded people trying to stop free expression from others is a very current topic. One of the best soundtracks of all time.
Gross Pointe Blank- 9/10 One of my favorite movies of all time, with my favorite actor John Cusack. Having his sister as his assistant was perfect. Minnie Driver is also one of my biggest crushes. The movie is hilarious and fun, and the premise has been ripped off many times since.

Best Godzilla film I've ever seen. The fact they made this with such a low budget is a pretty good sign that Hollywood doesn't know what it's doing. Why the hell does hollywood continue to make awful decisions when it comes to making video game movies? I'm not even going to get into some of the awful trash that we saw in the 90s or anything Uwe Bol has touched. Just look at the video game adaptations over the past decade, snice hollywood figured out comic book movies, and see how bad most still are.
Did Gran Turismo need a movie? Does Just Cause need a movie? Neither one of these have much of a story or any memorable characters. What would compel me to see them in theaters? Same goes for Rampage and Monster Hunter.
How about the fact that we've somehow had 2 Hitman movies made?
What about the decision to cast Tom Holland as Nathan Drake and Mark Wahlberg as Sully?
Or whatever the hell the Assassin's Creed movie was?
I'm fully expecting the Borderlands movie to be god awful. Kevin Hart isn't capable of making a good movie at this point and it seems like they tried to attach as many big names to the project as possible to save it.

Twisters: 8/10
I don't go to the theater very often, but nostalgia got the better of me and made me want to see this in the theater like I did the Twister back in 1996. It was worth it. The first movie was a bit of a special effects marvel at the time, though you can watch it now and it screams early CGI. This movie made the tornados look just like what you see from real storm chasers. The knock would be just like in the first movie some of the physics of what is done in the movie is pretty questionable. But, just like in the first movie, the movie conveys the power and destruction of natural monsters.
Story was good, if many of the twists (and twisters) you can see coming. Just a fun popcorn movie that isn't too deep, not preachy at all, and gives you some real thrills.

It discusses everything that went into it, the creative efforts to make the songs themselves, the aftermath and then the absolute explosion when the Thriller mini-movie came out. Fun and very justifiably R-rated super hero film. They did a great job of keeping cameos quiet and there were a lot of fun ones. You can tell that Reynolds loves the character and universe. All the fights you could ask for and tons of nostalgia. The mid-credits scene was a nice love letter to all the non-MCU properties and the end credits scene is hilarious. Deadpool & Wolverine - 9/10
I’ll nick it a point because I’m sick of the multiverse stuff and I felt the first 20% or so was a little slow for me.

They need to remake this Redford/Pitt movie, with like Pitt and Glenn Powell.
It's a very good movie, but Tony Scott's directing makes it feel very of it's time. It just feels a bit too late 90s/early 00s.

This was the Drive-In we used to go to when I was a kid. Saw Star Wars there in 1977, and it blew my mind. It always had double features, and I remember so many times watching that first movie then crashing in the back seat full of blankets and pillows with my little sister through the second movie. Saw such classics as "Walking Tall" "Harper Valley PTA" "Ode To Billy Joe" "Love Story". It is not in an area that I would want to be in that late at night anymore. I wish there were more Drive In's like this around.

I agree with the score and enjoyed it. It had a 90s feel to it where scenes and the plot weren't stretched out. Sometimes it worked and other times it was jarring how quickly a plot point was resolved and they moved on. Michael Keaton was amazing though.

Uglies - 2/10
Boy, did this suck. A movie with 25-30 year olds playing 16-year olds. The premise is a post apocalyptic Earth where genetics allows kids to undergo a procedure on their 16th birthdays that makes them into perfect beings, going from “Uglies” to “Pretties.” Of course the transformation makes attractive people into tanned, blonde, styled haired, amber color eyed, makeup wearing versions that look like they did before. There is a rebellion and convenient yet stupid technology and betrayals and a setup for a sequel that I feel pretty certain will not be made.
Potential for a cool concept and some selectively good scenery, but really wooden acting (Chase Stokes and Laverne Cox were particularly cringy) and some shitty CGI. 2/10 may be generous, but there are worse movies. Just not much worse.

Good reviews on Gladiator II. Coming soon to you on Nov 22.
I enjoy Denzel and like that he is getting some nice roles as a mature actor.
https://variety.com/2024/film/awards/gladiator-2-first-reaction-ridley-scott-oscars-1236182621/
Matt Brennan of the L.A. Times said the film has “absolute sicko shit,” further calling it “the ‘we are so back’ of bloody costume epics.”
“Gladiator II” occurs 16 years after the first film’s events. The story follows Lucius (Mescal) — the grandson of Rome’s former emperor Marcus Aurelius and son of Lucilla (Connie Nielsen) and Maximus (Russell Crowe). Lucius now lives with his wife and child in Numidia. However, when Roman soldiers led by General Marcus Acacius (Pedro Pascal) invade, he is forced into slavery. He must fight as a gladiator at the behest of the current young emperors, Caracalla and Geta (Joseph Quinn and Fred Hechinger).

Alien Romulus - 7.5/10
The most like the original sequel. Somewhat slow but made up for it in the last 30-40 min or so, the big boss and the fight was fun!
Very different from Prometheus/Covenant but that's okay. I loved Prometheus (and the unanswered mysteries) but Covenant got a little too cute, deus ex machina for me. Romulus brings it back down to earth.
I wish they would make a series out of this (ala Paramount and the Star Trek franchise). And I don't mean fighting an Alien every episode, but think the Weyland world/universe is a pretty good setting for lots of interesting stories and the occasional Alien/space marines here and there.

I have nothing to add on new movies, but my daughter told me they are watching The Island in her Freshman (high school) religion class. Yes, the 2005 Michael Bay movie starring Ewan McGregor and Scarlett Johansson where they're clones who's purpose is to be harvested for their owners should they get in an accident.
Strangely enough, I watched it last week because it was the subject of a recent How Did This Get Made podcast episode. I had vague memories of having seen it before and it largely being forgettable. And on watching it again, it was. It was your stereotypical mediocre mid-budget sci-fi movie.
Not really something I would think to show to 15 year olds for a religion class, but what else am I gonna spend $20k a year on.

I have never seen the broadway show. My wife has read the book (many years ago), and of course I grew up watching the Wizard of Oz, but that's our only connection. Both kids went with us, and that probably adds to how much I loved it because we hardly ever get a chance to doing things with both of them. Beyond that, it was just tremendous. The music, the sets, the acting, just all around.
When I was a kid, the scariest thing in the world was the flying monkeys. We had a local record store called Oz that had flying monkeys set on a track that would fly from one end of the store to the other, and those things did nothing to help my fear. The monkeys in this movie may be more freaky.

Horizon - 6.5/10
I really wanted to love this as I like Costner as an actor and he also directed this movie. There were some great parts in it reflecting how they (white & Indians) lived back then, language, mannerisms etc. so learn some stuff.
But it ramble on and seem pretty disjointed. This is Chapter 1 and there will be 3 additional chapters. I think it would have been better to have created a mini-series on Netflix than 4 long big-screen movies.
I'm pretty sure I'll watch all 4 chapters but probably not one that I'll rewatch every 2-3 years like WoT or Witcher.

I have now watched the director's extended cut of Rebel Moon 1 and 2.
I think it got skewered way worse than it should have. It was basic, but you could see the concepts for the new Star Wars in there. Could have been better than what we ended up with, impossible to really know given the changes that would have needed to happen.
Even still, probably too many, now famous, slow motion shots of harvesting wheat.

Low effort sequel, even for Disney. Took my daughter because she's at that age where she's not supposed to think Disney cartoons are cool, but still feels nostalgic about them. She said it was good. Nostalgia is a hell of a drug.

Really felt like it took itself way too seriously for a Batman movie and just came across as silly and bloated the more world building they tried to do. At some point the corruption and destruction just became goofy.

We watched these a co7upke of weeks ago, and been meaning to post:
The Substance: 5/10 This movie getting awards is puzzling. It definitely had a try-hard to be heavily cinematic approach that can work in a movie with some actual gravity, but this felt like a movie that tried to take it's message to seriously while being a bit silly. The ending was 30 minutes of grotesque ridiculousness that just came off to me as dumb.
A Real Pain: 6/10 Heavy at times, funny at times but mostly a somewhat interesting look at a childhood friendship as adults between two cousins dealing with history and their current lives. Decent movie, but not really great.
Driveaway Dolls: 6/10 A lesbian buddy comedy with a Coen's brother feel, though this is just Ethan directing and screenwriting along with his wife. Funny-ish, not nearly as witty as a standard Coen fare, and very stereotypical in how it wrote its lesbian characters.
Tag 7/10: This was a bit more fun, if over the top. Like a Hangover-light.
Edit: Just to add Driveway Dolls and The Substance did have a reason to watch, and that is Marget Qualley is just very hard not to want to watch. She has that quality like her mother that just draws your eyes.

Oscars time again. My wife and I always watch all the best picture nominees. I was less than enthusiastic about the 3:35 run time of the Brutalist. I'll post my thoughts after we finish them all.
This was a pleasant surprise. Halfway through, there is a 15-min intermission. Gave me a chance to go get some refreshments and use the bathroom. It was a nice way to recharge my brain and sit back down for the second half.
And for what it's worth, the movie is long, yes, but it held my attention the entire way through.

I'm 38, and my peak baseball watching was around this time. Of course I remember the Moneyball A's. The movie is excellent, probably my favorite sports movie too.
How can you not be romantic about baseball?
so what were your feelings on those a's? and those players and the whole thing? Were you freaking out? cheering them on? Very curious

Art Howe is angry about how he was portrayed in "Moneyball" - NBC Sports (https://www.nbcsports.com/mlb/news/art-howe-is-angry-about-how-he-was-portrayed-in-moneyball)
i mean howe is hardly in the movie and hoffman acted like every manager acts so whatever. It's a movie. I totally disagree with the article saying that howe is portrayed as a villain. He isn't. He's just doing his job in a bureaucratic workplace where someone else is trying to take away his job. His name is barely spoken so no one except baseball nerds will know anyway.
Also....the movie was ALMOST directed by Steven Sodelburgh. He was going to do it close to documentary style with all real players from that era. A lkast minute script revision argument made him leave the project. After that they br9ought in the actual director and THEN sorkin joined the project. THank god for that. SOrkin is magic

I still haven't cut the cord. It's one of my "old person" ways. My kids never watch cable and the option never really enters their head - they immediately go to an app. My wife never watches TV, so if I did cut the cord I don't think they'd notice in the slightest.
Other than sports, I rarely watch cable. Even then, I have NFL+ and watch a lot of football on that app, so it basically boils down to Red Wings and college football. Almost all of my TV watching is very specific and targeted - I sit down to watch a specific show on an app and then move on.
I very occasionally just turn the TV and look through "the guide" to see what's on. But I love doing it. It's how I watched TV my entire life and, as a result, I have seen dozens and dozens of movies that I would never have carved time out to watch. Most of these movies are bad to terrible, but it's fun to have seen them and know they exist. I, also, catch parts (or all) of old movies - like Green Mile - that I haven't seen in years. For example, two weeks ago I fired up cable and browsed the guide and came across "Drive Angry", an absolutely bonkers 2011 Nicholas Cage movie. It's an insane film and I would have never chosen to watched it, but it was delightful in its grind house weirdness.
I guess you could try to mirror this by cycling through movie and TV show libraries on an app, but it's still not the same as just having to take what's being served up on cable at a specific time.

I can't see me ever getting rid of DirectTV. My wife travels a lot for work, but we watch pretty much the same stuff so I'm not watching without her. Unless there is sports on I usually end up flipping through the guide and there will be something to watch I enjoy.
World War Z was on right after Green Mile.

Here - 7/10
Tom Hanks & Robin Wright in their Forrest Gump reunion movie. I really wanted to love this movie but ultimately, it fell short for me.
The concept is great, acting was okay to poor (other characters), the pacing was way too rushed, the de-aging CGI was not the best. There wasn't much time for viewers to appreciate the numerous characters. I figure they needed another hour at least.
But in a funny way, it brought closure to the Forrest Gump movie. Glad I watched it, but could have been alot better.

Watched The Gorge on Apple TV. Anya Taylor-Joy could have chemistry with a fruit bat. At best, it's a 2 hour mess of a movie that only really feels like an hour. At worst it's a mediocre video game.

Watched several the last week ir so...
Anora- 9/10 Picture of the year? Not really in my estimation, but they don't ask me. Still, was a great movie. I will say that between the two, Mikey Madison's performance deserved the Oscar over Demi Moore. I think Moore's support was more a lifetime consideration. Madison was a powerhouse in a fun and sad film.
Conclave- 9/10 of these two, the better movie IMO. Of course, it us a subject matter I am fascinated about so that probably is the reason. I wasn't really surprised by the final pick of the Pope, but what his secret was did surprise me.
A Complete Unknown 8/10 Dillion is great, but not really my thing. Chalamet did a fantastic job becoming him.

It would be interesting to go back and find out if the Billy vs Art conflicts really were there. Did Billy tell Art to play certain players and he wouldn't? Did they really trade Pena because Art kept playing him? Pena was a big prospect at the time but wasn't hitting.
Lots of question if you want to dig deep which I don't. I just want to sit back and watch this movie which is also in my top 2-3 sports movies with Remember the Titans and not sure what the other is... :)

Walking Tall (1973): 3/10
I wanted to watch this in honor of the death of Joe Don Baker. I remember watching this movie as a kid and really thinking it was a great action movie. Wow, was I a dumb kid. The fighting was really, really bad. I think what I reacted too young was that they did show consequences of the fighting unlike old westerns where people would get thrown around and hit with stuff all completely bloodless. This movie had bad b-movie fighting, but people where definitely bruised up and bleeding if they got hit hard with something, or stabbed, or shot repeatedly. All of which happened to Buford Pusser regularly, and that is one of the few factual parts of the movie. (fun fact, I knew people that actually knew him and were even was apart of his funeral).
The subtle and not so subtle racism struck me hard. The casual way he used the "N" word in one scene was surprising. "But he had a black friend...." Anyway, pretty bad acting and action with iffy writing.

Been watching a ton of Bill Simmons Rewatchables podcast lately and it's gotten me into watching movies again, so here's a bunch of quick reviews (not all related to the podcast, but most are).
Miss March: 6/10
Hadn't seen it since it came out and remembered liking it a lot more than most. First half is a GREAT buddy comedy but it falls apart halfway through when it turns into a sentimental sex comedy?
You Were Never Really Here: 9/10
Adored it even though I'm still not sure I understand what, if any of it, was actually happening as portrayed. Might be my favorite Phoenix performance.
The Joker 2: 8/10
Turned to my buddy about 3 quarters of the way through with tears in my eyes and said, "If you were in a mental institution as a teenager, you understand why this is such a good movie". Admittedly a very a niche audience certainly not the intention of the film but I can only judge it on what it did for me. I could give a shit about the superhero/intentions/backlash drama.
Boogie Nights: 10/10
Every bit as brilliant as I'd remembered.
The Master: 8/10
Performances were brilliant but the actual subject matter didn't quite get me there.
There Will Be Blood: 7/10
Another case of an obviously brilliant performance but I just didn't find the story as engrossing as I though It would be, given the almost universal praise.
Hell Or High Water: 9/10
Like an Asylum version of No Country For Old Men helmed by competent people. It's just fun.
Almost Famous: 6/10
I get why it's about the kid, but the whole I was watching it I couldn't help but think it'd be a much better movie if it was about the band, the lead singer specifically.
Minority Report: 7/10
So stupid, yet so engaging and well crafted. It's like Rembrandt opening a coloring book and saying "I can do something with this."
Night Shift: 6/10
Somehow had never seen this even though it was right in my prime viewing wheelhouse as a kid, and I gotta say, Keaton just doesn't do it for me, and I love Gung Ho, Mr. Mom, Beetlejuice etc... So I was expecting to love it. But I found Winkler and especially Shelly Long to be the more interesting parts of the movie and wish they'd been more of the focus. I almost feel like it's a better movie if it's just about them.
Heaven Can Wait: 5/10
Maybe it's just too before my time, style wise but I just didn't get it. I did appreciate the humor but I just wasn't feeling, and just don't get Beatty.

Typical MI movie. Fun, lots of action, can't think too deep. Worth watching and may pick up entire series on BR on a BF sale. Tom Cruise will never win an Oscar but do think he is underrated.

I also love seeing clint howard in every ron howard film hehe. Another side note about the nephew that gets Chuck's job Leonard is played by Bobby Dicicco, who I just saw in I want to Hold YOur Hand and 1941. :)
I like Heaven Can Wait more for Charles Grodin and Jack Warden. Another weird movie from my childhood.
Re Almost Famous, you gotta admit that Philip Seymour Hoffmann is amazing as Lester Bangs. Also Francis McDormand is also amazing. You're kinda right I do like the band. But if it were just about the band I don'tknow if there is a film.

I found another memory. As a child I remember watching a movie scene with Paul Benedict being creepy and hypnotizing some guy and describing him smoking, dropping the cigarette on his lap, and catching himself on fire. Finally ran into that movie again. It is 1971's COLD TURKEY starring Dick Van Dyke in a satire about a town quitting smoking to win 25 million dollars. also in it are Benedict, Bob Newhart, Tom Poston, Jean Stapleton, Edward Everett Horton, Bob & Ray, M Emmet Walsh. Was written and directed by Norman Lear of course.

It was better than the reviews canning it are. If there never had been previous movies, people would be talking about how awesome it is. The CGI is fantastic. The characters kind of suck, as in, they are hard to cheer for as protagonists. But in the vein of the entire series it's way, way better than 6 and somewhere between 4-5 in quality. A fun summer movie, and something I could easily watch again.

I watched Now You See Me recently, and came away with a weird impression.
The ingredients are very promising on the surface. It's basically cast well. It draws clear inspo from a variety of recent films that really "worked" well: Oceans Eleven remake, The Prestige, and The Usual Suspects, among others I'm sure. The script probably was good enough to attract a good cast, who all are strong fits for their roles and all do their job just fine.
But the movie stinks. It looks good. But it is just missing the "stuff" that make a Nolan movie really sizzle, or a Fincher movie really crackle, or whatever. I don't know how to explain it, but the movie is... well, not bad, I suppose, but it's definitely not actually good. Sum less than the parts, and all. Fail.

The list (https://www.the-numbers.com/box-office-star-records/worldwide/lifetime-acting/top-grossing-leading-stars) itself is basically MCU with some others sprinkled in. It helps if you have some other franchise appearances beyond that, such as Star Wars, The Fast & the Furious, Avatar, etc.
From a quick glance, The Rock, Tom Cruise, Tom Hanks and Johnny Depp are the only four in the top 15 without MCU credits - of course, they are all part of other franchises which have done very well.

Superman - 7/10 It's a good movie, a fun watch, and a strong but imperfect start for the DCU under Gunn. I thought David Corenswet was damn near perfect as Superman, Rachel Brosnahan played a solid Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult is the best on-screen Lex we've seen. Some great performances, some great characters, but outside of Lex the villains were rather boring and mundane. Nothing story-wise is going to blow anyone away but I'm looking forward to seeing where the DCU goes from here while hoping they don't drown us in movies and shows like the MCU.

The Amateur (5/10) - This should have been right up my alley. Cool revenge movie with a great cast. But it felt like two different movies they tried to mash together. Like Jon Bernthal's character made no sense and felt like it was supposed to be part of a bigger plotline. Enjoyed it for the cast and some of the cool scenes but had so much more potential.
Superman (8/10) - Not a big Superman fan but this was probably the best Superman movie I've seen. It was perfectly cast and just a solid Summer blockbuster movie.
Equalizer 3 (7/10) - Love these movies but this was the worst of the bunch. Felt like Denzel sort of mailed it in (which is still better than 99% of the actors in Hollywood). Not enough action scenes and those we got felt rushed. Still a decent movie but not in the same realm as the first 2.
Ice Road Vengeance (2/10) - Liam Neeson is going to keep making these movies and I'll keep watching them. This one was pretty bad though. Not sure why they went with a sequel that had little to nothing to do with the first. Very low budget, action scenes kind of lame, just a bad movie for a great actor.

Simple but effective story about getting old, centered around an alien crashing in Ben Kingsleys backyard. Feels almost like a TV movie in its simplicity but is carried by a plethora of strong performances.

Fantastic in every respect. I probably would have loved it even more if went in not knowing the plot twist. There's no part of this movie that isn't intricately crafted, leading to some amazing setups and payoffs.
Companion: 6/10
Very frustrating movie that is 30% inspired ideas and 70% paint by numbers filler that left me aggravated at the possibilities left on the table.
Waiting For Guffman: 6/10
It was fine, certainly not as good as I'd expected and the silly, gay lead character hasn't aged well.On
Aliens: 10/10
I might have seen this as a kid but all I remembered was bits and pieces. It's great.

I recently watched THE LONG GOODBYE (1973) and well, I've been sleeping on young Elliott Gould all my life.

One of my Top-5 movies ever.

Just watched The Brutalist and honestly don't think I enjoyed it as much while watching it as I did reading peoples interpretations and breakdowns after the fact. I keep replaying scenes and moments in my head and thinking "yeah, that makes sense" or "Oh, I get it now", but does that mean it's a good movie (to me) even if I was kind of unmoved and uninterested while watching it?
It's a technically great movie, I just found it disconnecting at best and uninteresting at worst.

The Amateur - 8/10
Really fun movie. The ending was a little too "convenient" but everything else was great. Good action, pacing and supporting cast.
Great to see Rami Malek doing well since (our family favorite) "Night at the Museum".

John Wick: 5/10
It was fine, but given the build up, I guess I was expecting more. I found it more stupid stupid than stupid fun. I checked out about an hour into the nightclub scene and watched the last 40 minutes with the volume muted.
The Brutalist: 2/10
Didn't like it, then read up on it, and the idea that it's an allegory for movie making really chafed my balls. The idea that Brody in the final scene somehow represents the filmmaker is the height of pretentious fuckwittery.
Beau Is Afraid: 10/10
Fascinating fucking film. I was never bored, I was entertained for the entire 3 hours and it took me all over the place emotionally. It took about an hour to feel like I got what was happening but once I had that realization, it could have been gone on for another 5 hours and I'd have been glued to the screen. A masterpiece.

Watch that last week. It was fun. Didn't quite catch the magic of the first movie, but it was great for the nostalgia elements.
Fantastic Four- 5.5/10
I say at best this is ok. I liked the Space Age aesthetic, and I think the casting worked for the most part. The movie itself felt uneven. Like it was divided in these sections of anthematic hype (best I can describe it) that felt a bit over the top. Enjoyed Thunderbolts way more.

War of the World's (2025) - this may have been the worst movie I've ever seen. -6/10
It's like a 90 minute ad for Amazon while also telling us the worst thing in existence is Amazon's AWS.

John Wick - Ballerina - 7.5/10
Solid movie in the franchise. A notch down in "gun-fu" slickness (?) but can see Armas only get better. Also, appreciate her being portrayed as several rungs below Wick himself. Hope they find a way to get them together again.

Weapons - 8/10
This movie was an absolute delight. It's well made and really well acted. I did not expect to leave the theater feeling like I did. It took me a good ten minutes to stop smiling and laughing after the movie ended.

Very much looking forward to seeing Weapons, very much blew me away when I realized it was made by Zach from WKYK. Which leads me to...
Barbarian: 7/10
Nothing earth shattering, but a well crafted horror full of slight twists and misdirection that is engrossing throughout.
Friendship: 2/10
Was looking so forward to this as I really enjoy ITYSL and was wondering what Tim Robinson could bring to feature comedy. Oooof. It's just bad. Slow and particularly un engaging, full of characters that border the absurd and pedestrian without ever committing to either which creates a jumbled mess of characters you can't laugh at or sympathize with. I kept waiting for the punchlines but they never came in any satisfying way. A few inspired moments involving a toupee and a Subway but other than that it's the movie form of constipation, where you know something should be happening but it just doesn't.

Jurassic World Rebirth - 5/10
Yick. I really did not enjoy the movie and don't plan to add it to my BR collection unless the next one is better (so I don't have a gap).
Scarlett Johansson didn't do it for me, she seemed miscast here and acting was pretty wooden. The daughter & boyfriend was way too annoying for me. The ending somewhat dissatisfying (no T-Rex fight climax)
Special effects were great as usual.
(Re-watched The Martian after, had to get the disappointed taste out. Such a great movie).

Superman - 6.5/10
Never was a Superman fan nor any of the movies/TV series. Latest movie didn't convince me otherwise.
Hard for me to believe Lex Luthor wants to reign over a small country when he's built a pocket universe. $40-$50B in military sales ... pffftttttt. And like all villains, made the mistake of talking-and-talking-and-talking and giving the hero a chance to escape. I get its all fantasy but still ... pretty poor writing IMO.
I did like Krypto and thought Lois was solid.

Battleship - 7.5/10
Rewatched Battleship tonight and it is campy but also just fun. The homage to the game was worthless but lots of action, some humor + great special effects.
Wish they came up with a sequel with another alien attack.

(Re-watched The Martian after, had to get the disappointed taste out. Such a great movie). My brother and I have an ongoing tradition of watching the Jurassic movies in the theatre, we went to see it August 8th. I was about to echo that 5/10 grade, but for one specific reason I'll push it up to a 6/10.
We agreed that "Rebirth" would be misplaced on any smaller format screen. Specifically for some moments where something was happening on screen on the left and on the right where the experience of actually looking left and right isn't going to happen on a small screen at home. That alone makes it a 6.
But... The story was "meh". It was loaded with typical "Jurassic" moments, but it was lacking WTF moments (we counted one and I can't even recollect what it was, which makes you wonder how meaningful it really was). There were no jump out of your chair from shock moments and we counted two sad/bummer moments. Overall, the dinosaurs were sort of missing in action, but the times one was on screen it was all over the place in variance between too bizar to be believable and outstanding cinematics.
We didn't talk about her specifically, but I suspect we both felt this was the worst Scarlett Johansson acting we've seen, playing a character that felt like flipping between being the antagonist and one of the bad guys. But can we really blame her for being stuck in the worst movie of the franchise? Or maybe it barely was better than J.P. III.

I thought Rebirth was significantly more enjoyable than the last one with the locusts. That was one of the worst movies I have ever seen. Who comes to a Jurassic World movie and wants to see locusts?
I thought Rebirth did a nice job throwing in scenes from the books that didn't make it into the Jurassic Park movies. The T. rex swimming scene was great.

The Roofman 6.5/10 enjoyable enough. Nice story, and Channing Tatum is charming enough.
The Sting 6/10 This movie won best picture? It was ok, but not great. Lots of talent with Redford and Newman, but the actual "sting" wasn't very realistic. It seemed like the whole thing would hwve been so easily blown. Hard to believe a guy with the power and street smarts the mark should have had would hwve fell for it.

Anoth Battle After Another 9/10 Great film. Sean Penn was crazy, creepy fantastic.
The Naked Gun 7/10 Funny nostalgia. Nice blend of the old style in new clothes.

O.5/10 - Greenland 2: Migration may have been the worst movie I've ever seen that got released nationwide that wasn't released as a joke or as propaganda. It was worse than those 90s made for TV movies they showed on Saturday Nights on network TV. I made it through 65 of the 95 minutes and realized I couldn't take any more. It's seriously almost as bad as the Ice Cube War of the Worlds. I was also disappointed the ducks from the Illumination Migration movie didn't make an appearance.

Melania has some interesting numbers. They are reporting it pulled $8 million dollars in box office sales, which is huge for a documentary. The problem is, the theaters playing it are completely empty. I just looked at theaters in my area starting last night, and every showing was completely empty except two tickets at one. It is getting a 8% on Rotten Tomatoes on the professional critic side, but the audience score is 98%, with people claiming "A fantastic flick, our theater was sold out and erupted in applause and cheers at the end of the show."
Now of course I wouldn't say someone has bought millions of dollars of tickets, or that they have paid for some bots to post glowing reviews.....actually I will say that. That is exactly what has happened.

I live in a very red part of the state. Just out of curiosity I looked at the available showings. One thing I noticed, and it may just be a timing thing, but the earlier shows in my area are doing decently, anywhere for near sell out to 2/3 or more full. The later showing have barely anyone there, and no one in some cases. If people are going to see it they are likely all older people who don't do 7:30 movies.

Who's reporting $8M? If they're anyone related to the admin or looking to get on the good side of the admin, we can safely assume those are made up numbers.

Dola: Speaking of Deadline, they are raving about the numbers. They are saying the CinemaScore numbers are unheard of, and they are actual showing huge positive numbers across the board. I guess the cult is really turning out for this pos.

Cinemascore is a good measure of how much the movie's intended audience likes a film. It's not a surprise that people who choose to see Melania ended up loving the movie, or at least pretended to love it.

Mercy - 3/10. It's like 25% Minority Report and 75% the recent War of the World's with Ice Cube. I can't believe they actually released this to theaters instead of straight to streaming.
28 Days Later: Bone Temple - 6/10. It was fine but felt disjointed. Lots of man parts and body skinning. Good music though.
War Machine -: 2/10. Generic military meets alien mech movie. Also surprisingly gory and thankfully it flew by. Alan Ritchson has at most 1 note to his acting and Dennis Quaid has somehow become a worse actor with age, which is quite the feat. It's basically a remake of Predator or any other generic action movie.

Project Hail Mary: 10/10, perfect movie, no notes.
OK, some notes. It's a science fiction comedy that still has a bunch of pathos. So if that isn't your thing you might not like it. But a good way to judge is whether or not you liked The Martian (the author of the book made into that movie is also the author of the book made into this movie).
Also, if you're not a fan of Ryan Gosling, obviously you probably won't be a fan here. I think he's great, so no issues.
There's a couple of silly parts that almost go too silly, one being a quick diversion when they forget about Newtonian physics which is an odd choice in an otherwise so science-forward movie, but it fit the overall tone, so I was fine with it.
I read the book and loved the movie and thought it was a great adaptation. My wife didn't read the book but also loved the movie and cried and laughed at all the right points. My 14-year-old son, who is famously dismissive of anything either of us like, said it was the greatest movie he'd ever seen, which is wild.
Go see it - it's what movies are supposed to be about.
