Sterling Silvers hands over his 30g of his 31g and Harbor City Plans (3, 1) over to his partner in plundering, Iron Foot William. He leaves his crew in the tavern and heads out to the dock. One last time, he gazes upon his poor ship with splintered mast and tattered sail, the vessel barely seaworthy. N'er shedding a tear for his beloved Silver Piece, he takes her out a final time and retires to sea with a single gold piece.

Welcome aboard. Did ye wound the rat fer takin' out yer eye?
Aye, chased th' wee bugger across th' se'en seas after he tookst me eye. Ten voyages I hunted that rat, through muddy streets an' dingy alleys I stalked him. Finally found th' lad's, bunkin' curled up in a wee ball, nay doubt full after eatin' some other son of a biscuit eater's body parts. I drew me pistol, aimed real careful, an' gave that rat a nasty flesh wound. Seems that havin` one eye messes wi' me depth perception. I`ll find th' rat again, tho, an' when I do, I`ll be aimin' a bit further t' th' starboard side!

Note:
A reminder...in the event of joint raids or cruises, the Master gets all of the gold and the pick of the cargo and hostages. How things are divvied up in the final tally is up to the Master and the other pirate(s) in question. You'll see this in effect this turn, that be fer sure!

TURN 4 REPORT:
HARRRRR! We filled up our active list. Only Ye Olde Waiting List remains.
Pirate lore o’ th’ day: “How do ye call two wenches? Yo, ho ho.”
The tremendous exploits of Lady Elizabeth the Blond and her cohorts deserve mention. Having terrorized the harbor city of Port Madden and carried off the colonial governor as a hostage in addition to holds bursting with plunder, the blond pirate has been dubbed “Raider Lizzie” by pundits in the colonial press. She was aided in these most foul doings by Iron Foot William, Antonio D’Griffin, and the young Sterling Silvers Jr.
Posted Quest (result):
Bart the Not-So-Cunning was the first pirate to reach the grounded naval transport. As predicted, a small armed sloop stood by in defense, and it successfully fought off Bart. But Red Jack Turner made good on the quest, chasing the battered sloop off and pillaging the stricken ship for its supplies. An infamous victory for Red Jack!
Posted Quest (free action):
The Brethren have spoken, and the dead Frenchman’s 7g are to be put up fer the following contest: Each pirate o’ The Brotherhood is to come up with a motto…a short phrase or sentence that best speaks to th’ essence of pirating. Each pirate will then vote for their favorite entry – and ye cannot vote fer yer own! The winner takes home the gold, and we take the motto as our own for The Brotherhood of Turducken Island.
Posted Quest: “The Emerald Ghost”
A strange visitor to Turducken Island speaks of a dread curse and a valuable treasure o’ emeralds. Says he’s got plenty of information to share, and all for a mere 5g starting bid or the highest offer above that he gets.
Information for sale!
McShae the Picky, having had his ample nose bloodied by the ornery bitch one too many times, is offering the secrets of the “Shelly Baker” for sale to the highest bidder. Here is the tale: A fisherman with an old grudge against the captain of the “Shelly Baker” told of its typical trade route. The vessel carries luxuries, but if you wish to Cruise for it the frequency roll will be a d4 rather than a d10 due to this information. This is an individual quest. You may share or trade this information.
Remember to list a mandatory Drunken Debauchery action if you have one for Turn 5. Also note any crew losses or ship damage, as well as accept or decline any trade offers.

The latter. But you can do an "if/then" with the 1st trade offer, like "If the offer is Xg or better, then accept it."
Me hostage wasn't noteworthy?
No, but the hostage has a 4g initial value. When you take a "trade" action you'll receive a ransom offer.

TURN 5 REPORT:
HARRRRR! An applicant on Ye Olde Waiting List! A first for The Brotherhood. Yet our active list be cut down a bit, as we’ve lost some brothers. So we be needin' more applicants!
Pirate lore o’ th’ day: “It be true that dead men tell no tales, but then they don’t do a whole lot o’ things.”
Grim tidings…Pinkbeard be dead. We’ll honor his memory by offering up his +1 dueling sword and 30g in a Turn 6 (Action #1) dueling tournament. Same tourney rules as before.
Torstein the Unholy has been forever lost at sea. The manner o’ his death be unknown. Rumors of his 22g horde being hidden somewhere may be investigated by taking a “Quest for Torstein’s Gold” action at any time.
Vlad the Pillager has met with an untimely fate raiding along the coast.
A d6 crew, late of the "Royal Viking Star," will sign on with the highest bidder in Turn 6.
Posted Quest (VOTE):
The Brethren have spoken, and the dead Frenchman’s 7g are to be put up fer the following contest: Each pirate o’ The Brotherhood is to come up with a motto…a short phrase or sentence that best speaks to th’ essence of pirating. Each pirate will then vote for their favorite entry – and ye cannot vote fer yer own! The winner takes home the gold, and we take the motto as our own for The Brotherhood of Turducken Island.
1. "Get yer hands off me booty!" (Ravenbeard McNasty)
2. “Turducken Island, bringing families together through raidin' and pilligin'.” (Antonio D’Griffin)
3. "Admiral! Thar be wenches here!" (Java Rob)
4. “Come enjoy Days of Plunder with The Brotherhood.” (Feverish Billy Rumsucker)
5. “Ahoy wench! May I fire my cannon through your porthole?” (Lazy Eye Quinn)
6. “Avast ye maties, free rum tomorrow!!” (Raider Lizzie)

Charging headlong in to raid a town bristling with a new garrison, Vlad found his plans disintegrating before him, and promptly fled into the nearby woods. His crew fought bravely, but had to withdraw to the “Royal Viking Star” after taking heavy losses. The ship was then brought under fire, and the crew sailed off without their leader. Surrounded and without hope of rescue, Vlad was captured and strung up in the town square the next morning. His 34g gold was taken by the town authorities.
The crew will make itself available to the highest bidder.

TURN 7 REPORT:
Pirate lore o’ th’ day: “Pare a pair o’ pears for me pair o’ parrot parents.”
“ Torstein’s Gold” (22g) was hauled in by Vaclav the Cruel.
Rumor has reached the island that a powerful pirate hunter aboard the d8 ship “Justice” is on the prowl in neighboring waters. Be wary.
A d6 crew is demanding to be taken on by some other captain, and will accept no less than 6g as a starting bid. See McShae the Unlucky’s report for more details.
A small shipment o’ fine pipe tobacco be available in the merchant district. 1g will buy ye a cask, and each cask will give yer crew a +1 morale boost for the action of yer choice. Ten casks are available, and will be sold based on earliest action, divided equally, and then a Harrrrr! die roll to break any ties. The casks are small and do not require a cargo hold.
Remember to list a mandatory Drunken Debauchery action if you have one for Turn 8. Also note any crew losses or ship damage, as well as accept or decline any trade offers.
= = = = =
The results:
Iron Foot William (144g)
Accepted 11g from Raider Lizzie and 5g from Antonio D'Griffin.
Turn 7 Actions:
1. Minion of Raider Lizzie = Raid 45 (4+3/4/5/4+1/3/3/4+2/4/6/2) versus Defense 11 (4+1+1+5). After a few volleys by the garrison the coastal town surrendered against such overwhelming force. Crew losses were taken by all but Sterling Silver Jr. Some 22g was plundered, and food amounting to 6g+3g+1g was taken aboard the “Blackened Catfish” and the “Gold Piece.”
2. Get trade offers for me loot = 12g (food) and 8g (resources) offers were made on yer cargo. Do ye accept either or both?

TURN 8 REPORT:
Pirate lore o’ th’ day: “It’d look kind o’ silly havin’ a seagull sittin’ on yer shoulder.”
Turducken Island is all abuzz with news of Feverish Billy Rumsucker’s return from the quest for the Emerald Ghost.
McShae’s d6 crew has signed on with Raider Lizzie for 15g. The unlucky McShae has been released.
The casks o’ fine pipe tobacco sold out quickly, as follows:
• Iron Foot William (2)
• Ravenbeard McNasty (2)
• Raider Lizzie (1)
• Java Rob (1)
• Davy the Cunning (1)
• Sterling Silvers Jr. (1)
• Vaclav the Cruel (1)
• Red-Eyed Ted (1)
However, the merchant be so impressed with the quick sale that he has asked for a captain willing to make a run up Virginia way to get more (one hold full). This’ll take up two actions, and the merchant offers a bounty o’ 8g upon safe delivery o’ the cargo. (Earliest to go wins out, and a Harrrrr! die roll to break ties if more than one pirate offers).
The old, wise sailors on Turducken Island say a storm might be brewin’.
Remember to list a mandatory Drunken Debauchery action if you have one for Turn 9. Also note any crew losses or ship damage, as well as accept or decline any trade offers.

[B]Quest for The Emerald Ghost[/B]
Sit down and hear the tale o’ Feverish Billy Rumsucker and the quest for the Emerald Ghost. Harrrrr, map in hand he took his crew aboard the Sickly Whale and made his way to that treacherous passage known as the Beast’s Mouth. Strong was the current and high were the jagged rocks on either side, yet Billy never wavered, and eventually he clawed the battered Whale up the channel to the calm lagoon on the other side. Here he learned the true nature of the “ghost” that guarded the emerald treasure. ‘Tweren’t no dead spirit, but living men…headhunters they were! Wicked n’ bloodthirsty savages who came howling like banshees out o’ the trees as soon as Billy and his boys marched in to find what lay below the X on the map. A desperate battle they fought, and many a lively lad will dance no more upon the deck o’ the Whale. Yet a bloody victory was won. And there, held in the grasp of some crudely carved wooden god, were a handful of emeralds as big as yer eyeballs! Billy holds ‘em close on his person even now, in a tightly tied velvet pouch, until he can trade ‘em off for gold. A hold full o’ other minor relics was loaded upon the Whale as well.

TURN 9 REPORT:
Pirate lore o’ th’ day: “Peg-legs are indeed covered by Turducken HMO.”
Bow yer heads, friends...we've lost another Brother.
Red Jack Turner has returned with more tobacco for the merchant to sell. Each cask provides a +1 crew action. He has ten casks, but given the demand last time has raised his price to 3g per cask. They may be purchased as part of any trade action, and will go on a first-come, first-served (Harrrr! tie-breaker) basis.
A fierce storm lashed Turducken Island this turn. Any ships cruising risked the perils of the storm-tossed sea.
Turtle soup has become a hot item on th’ island, and there’s money to be made gathering sea turtles if ye know where to look. For each “Cruise for turtles” action ye wish to take, a Cruising roll will determine your success in finding them; results will range from none, one hold, or two holds worth of d6 value turtles.
Remember to list a mandatory Drunken Debauchery action if you have one for Turn 10. Also note any crew losses or ship damage, as well as accept or decline any trade offers.
= = = = =
The results:
Sterling Silvers Jr. (152g)
Sent 4g to Iron Foot William, 3g to Raider Lizzie, 3g to Antonio, and 1g to Davy the Cunning
Accepted 50g from Iron Foot William and 9g from Raider Lizzie
Accepted 14g in trade offers.
Turn 9 actions:
1. Minion of Antonio D'Griffin = Quest = Ship found! “Shelly” proved an ornery bitch to subdue, blasting away with many a mighty broadside, and her huge crew fighting for their lives. ‘Twere a messy affair indeed (all ships were damaged and all crews suffered a loss), but the pirates were too many in the end, and a rich victory was won! Boarding 36 (6/3/3/4+3/1/4/4+2/3/2/1) vs. Defense 23 (3/9/11). The “Shelly Baker” was a spice ship, and the spoils were wondrous good: Luxuries amounting to 11g+9g+7g+6g+6g+5g+4g+2g were shipped aboard the four pirate vessels, 3g was plundered, and four hostages were also taken. The captured ship herself was hauled in as a prize.
2. trade = Offers of 24g and 15g were made for yer luxuries, and 3g for yer hostage. Do ye accept any/all?
3. A wenchin' we will go (1g) = A modest effort, Wench 39 (36 + 2 Harrrrr! + 1g), attracts skanky wenches (22), but the crew be +1 through Turn 10, and ye avoid the next Drunken Debauchery.

The Turn 10 deadline is not yet in force.
Some changes in the wind:
• I’m not happy with the Harrrrr! rating and pirate reputations, so that will be reworked. Right now I’m tinkering with x reputation points for various successful actions (i.e., 1 point per guano ship taken, 2 points per food ship taken, 0.1 point for every gold piece earned, etc.) with a running total for each pirate. Any tie-breaker situations using reputation would use this number with a random element added in, such as (x+d10). Accumulating reputation points will also be the means to improve ratings (or “level up”).
• The length between Drunken Debaucheries will no longer be tied to reputation. Also, I’m going to add the ability to “buy off” the crew and postpone the next drunk.
• Cargoes will no longer be listed with a (g), which is confusing. They will instead be listed with a (t) to indicate that their value will be multiplied by a trade roll to determine their final worth. Example: [3t guano] Likewise, hostages will be listed with an (h) since ransom values are not tied to trade ratings. Example: [8h hostage].
• I like the random events and will increase their frequency from up to 20% chance per pirate per turn. Basically, if the d10 roll is a “1” than it’ll be a negative event, and if it’s a “10” it’ll be a positive one.
• Pirates who are “lost at sea” will no longer be permanently lost unless there is a pirate on the waiting list. However, bad things will tend to happen to pirates who miss turns.
• Any other ideas or suggestions? Things you particularly like or dislike?

Hey Coug,
First off, I like the changes you're putting into effect. For a suggestion, I'd like to see increases in ratings happen a little more frequently. To counter that, you could have negative random effects (or something separate from that) become more frequent and nasty as people increase their ratings as authorities start to hone in on the 'infamous pirate scum'. Just a thought. Other than that, I think things are in good shape currently.

As a suggestion, would be nice if a pirate could say kidnap a skilled person.
i.e. kidnap a shipwright to lessen cost of repairs, a cook to improve crew morale, a rum/grog distiller to lessen the effects of druken debauchary, a skilled cannoneer to add firepower to one's ship, etc.
Just a suggestion.

Ne'er weighed in on the changes, but I agree with all the ones proposed so far. Tho, I will say that I'm with JAG on the chance of ratings changes happening more regularly. We've had maybe 1 per turn across the entire game (including new ships, swords, HARR! increases, etc) and some stats haven't shown life of moving at all (ie maybe the more you trade, the better you get at it or the more you plan and raid, the better your rating be).

TURN 10 REPORT:
Pirate lore o’ th’ day: The word “doubloon” comes from the Spanish doblón, augmentative of dobla, an old Spanish coin, from Latin dupla, feminine of duplus, meaning double.
10 kegs o’ tobacco (+1 crew action) were sold for 3g per cask to the following pirates:
• Spicy Antonio D'Griffin (3)
• Raider Lizzie (3)
• Iron Foot William (2)
• Sterling Silvers Jr. (2)
The turtle craze is at an end. However, several colonial governors have declared various turtle breeds endangered species.
A d6 ship, the “Sinner’s Heart,” is available for sale to the highest bidder.
A cartographer is making some nautical charts of the area. He will pay 2g for each action you take to assist him, and will also provide copies of the charts when they are completed. Only one pirate is needed per action (ties will be broken by reputation).
Quest: Sentinel Rock (inquire with an action)
Three new Brothers have joined the Log Book!
Remember to list a mandatory Drunken Debauchery action if you have one for Turn 11. Also be aware of any crew losses or ship damage, and accept or decline any trade offers.

Note the following changes (also listed in post #4):
Reputation Points (RP) have replaced the pirate’s Harrrrr! rating. Therefore, RP represent another form of ranking among The Brethren, and any tie-breaker situations using reputation would use this number with a random element added in, such as (RP+d10).
Accumulating reputation points will also be the means to improve ratings (or “level up”). Each level will allow the pirate to select a rating to increase (note: ship & crew may not be leveled up in this manner). The levels are 25 RP, 50 RP, 100 RP, 200 RP, and so on upward, doubling the previous number. Pirates who have already attained a level or two may select their improved rating(s) immediately.
RP are earned as follows:
Each unit of gold earned [0.1]
Ships captured (each):
Guano [1]
Food [5]
Resources [10]
Trade goods [20]
Luxuries [30]
Treasure [40]
Successful raids (each):
Fishing village [5]
Coastal town [10]
Harbor city [20]
Fortress [40]
Citadel [50]
Hostage [value #]
Dueling victory [opponent’s RP/10]
Navy ship defeated [variable]
Quests completed [variable]
*A note about Masters and Minions: Masters get full reputation points, and minions half points
**A note about gold: Gold received from other pirates does not count toward reputation! Be aware that this has a significant bearing on Master/Minion relationships.
***A note about cargo: Reputation points are not directly awarded for cargo, but for the gold earned when the cargo is sold off.
****A note about hostages: Due to the notoriety one gains from word-of-mouth, hostages provide reputation points both directly and indirectly (ransom gold).
• The length between Drunken Debaucheries will no longer be tied to reputation. Also, I’m going to add the ability to “buy off” the crew and postpone the next drunk (gold cost = die roll of crew level). Buying off the crew is an action.
• I like the random events and will increase their frequency up to 20% chance per pirate per turn. Basically, if the d10 roll is a “1” than it’ll be a negative event, and if it’s a “10” it’ll be a positive one.
• Pirates who are “lost at sea” will no longer be permanently lost unless there is a pirate on the waiting list. However, bad things will tend to happen to pirates who miss consecutive turns.
• Outside of standard trade and ransom actions, a challenged pirate’s assets are frozen until the challenge is resolved, and may not be “stashed” with another pirate.
• NEW ACTION: “Recover Gold.” Gold is considered to always be with a pirate physically unless it is buried. A pirate may bury any portion of their gold whenever they wish as a free action, but retrieving any buried gold requires a separate “Recover Gold” action.

I know it's a turn late, but thinking about future plans, I came up with some more suggestions.
1) Plans should expire after, I dunno, 5 turns or something. It's silly that a city you plotted against back in turn 2 would have the same defenses now, 10 turns later. Probably give some warning of a couple of turns so people have time to use up their current plans or draw up new plans, before implementing this one, tho.
2) Those poor boarders- they suck and there's no way around it. Raiding really is the way to go since the town always stays in the one place and good raiding adds to both planning and raiding. At least cruisers can go crusing for stuff like turtles from time to time. But poor boarders- they're at the mercy of crusing rolls and they don't really get anything special for their boarding ability. So why not merge boarding and cruising into one skill like raiding is- that way it is used in both rolls. Either that or make better boarders get better treasure- instead of the current loot roll, you get (loot/2 + boarding) or something so that boarding is actually worth a darn. I'm kindof leaning towards the former as the better suggestion since it would make it mirror raiding and there are already enough abilities to worry about balancing while leveling up (trading, dueling, raiding) never mind ship and crew.
3) The whole "bury gold" thing seems too "convenient" or "useless". You can just bury it and boom, it's safe. Or, maybe it's that anyone can stumble across it- then why would you do it at all.
So, basically create a key for it and for the sake of subtlety, call it "Treasure Map" ;) When you take the free action to bury the gold, it creates a "key" for that gold called "treasure map". So, for instance, if I buried 50 gold, I would get an item called "Treasure Map [50g Sterling II]". I could keep it myself or give it to whoever to safeguard. Whoever has it, can use it to access the gold with the "Recover Gold" action. That said, if that someone is lost at sea, so is the map tho maybe it comes up as part of a quest. If that someone is killed, the attacking pirate takes the map.
Maybe for specifics, you have to use a cruising roll to go find the gold again unless you're the pirate who originally went there. That way it's not easy as pie and there's a chance that your son can avenge you before the other pirate finds the gold. Make the cruising goal target of (gold/10). I'm just blueskying at this point...

Can my buried gold be recovered by other pirates?
Not yet, but I’m working on this. It’s something I wanted to implement in this batch (burying and seeking gold was suggested to me by Barkeep49, by the way), but didn’t want to slow the flow of the game any more for more “development” delays.
What I’d like to do is add something like a pirate’s “Intrigue” rating. Good for stealing things, spying on things, and tracking buried gold.
Plans should expire after, I dunno, 5 turns or something. It's silly that a city you plotted against back in turn 2 would have the same defenses now, 10 turns later. Probably give some warning of a couple of turns so people have time to use up their current plans or draw up new plans, before implementing this one, tho.
This is an excellent idea. A shelf life for plans. I will implement this.

While I appreciate the input, I disagree. The boarding aspect is multi-tiered for specific reasons. Cruising reflects the pirate’s sailing skill, knowledge of the sea and trade routes, etc. High ratings (and better rolls) basically reflect the ability to know where targets will be. Sometimes, though, you just can’t find anything.
Boarding reflects the pirate’s tactical skill in terms of ship-to-ship combat. Maneuver for broadsides, grapple at the right time, etc. But add to this the power of the pirate’s ship, and the quality of the crew. Even with a d4 ship, a skilled pirate with d6 or better boarding and a d6 or better crew can decimate the guano fleet with regularity. I like the way it’s scaled up…the stronger you become, the juicier targets you can go after. And in the scheme of things, replacing crews and ship damage is pretty cheap at the lower levels.
If anything, raiding should be made more difficult.

See above. I am working on this aspect, and we’ll have something up soon enough.

Tough call. But since you benefited from the Harrrrr! rating while it existed in the first ten turns, I’m inclined to say no. I might throw you a free wenching, though.

Splitting planning and raiding into two actions aren't necessarily a bad idea. I just think that if you did that, you'd see almost everyone put points into dueling and trade because the other four just aren't worth it. As it is right now- boarding is just such a useless skill from a meta-gaming standpoint. You still only have a d4 shot at finding a ship and the better ships are much higher whereas towns don't move at all. And if you spend your points building up a good cruiser and boarder, well, you're going to be dead from your lack of dueling ability. While you spent your first 3 upgrades and initial boost to get you cruising and boarding up to d8, that other guy has a dueling at d8 and trading at d8 so even if he's not as good at planning or raiding or cruising or boarding, he's getting twice as much loot as you when he succeeds so it cancels out. Never mind that he can just kill you with his d8 dueling, to boot. Much easier to build up gold either by getting better trades or killing another pirate for it. That said, if there's a giant pirate killing spree, I'm guessing it's like Omerta- there's only limited replay value when everything you've worked for is lost so easily.

Just hope this fine game doesn't turn into a pirate dueling/killing fest to get ahead.
Or that dueling/killing doesn't become the easy/fast way to get ahead.
I'm having too much fun pillaging and plundering.
