Is this any good? Is the original game worth getting?

The original game's been fun -- I have to say, it was the first RTS that I actually 'finished'. I haven't gotten around to getting the expansion pack that you mentioned yet, but I'm sure I'll pick it up down the line.

It's pretty unique; if you haven't played the original, you're missing out.

EDIT: If I'm not mistaken, you won't be able to play 'Winter Assault' without the actual original. http://dynamic.gamespy.com/%7Efof/forums/images/smilies/redface.gif

I've never played the tabletop version this game was modeled after, and delving into the series via this game was a welcomed treat. It was a bit 'short' -- I think 10 missions? It's been awhile since I passed it, but one of the things I admired about the game was when you were building a 'squad', it was akin to Kohan where one unit translates into 6-8 people or so. Plus, with each 'unit' within the squad, you can 'specialize' them via upgrades. Flamethrowers. Gatling guns. Rocket launchers.

The game was pretty fun, and I even considered going online to play in some LAN matches. Supposedly, this expansion campaign focuses a bit more on the standard Imperial Guard that was in the first campaign (albeit in the earlier missions).

Got a link to the original game?

Here's the first game:

http://www.dawnofwargame.com/

That "Winter Assault" is the expansion pack for the Warhammer 40K: Dawn of War game in the link above.

I think the original game runs for cheap nowadays, probably $30 or so.

Ahh I remember this one...they don't have my Necrons in the game, not even mildly intrested in the space marines are muh fwends style that GW likes to sling around.

Marines are boring =) Gimme my undead robots!

I'm not too familiar with the universe, really.

There's a gaming place here in town that I go to to check out some books, and it seems that Warhammer 40k is all the rage. This Pc iteration was my first exposure to the universe, so I'm not too terribly familiar with who's who -- at least, by what the game presents.

There were 4 races in the original -- the Orks, Space Marines, Chaos Marines, and some alien looking folks, can't quite recall the name...it's been months since I finished it.

I prefer GWs Blood Bowl universe, but that's just me... Have Wood Elf will pass.

There is a gold edition out with the base game and the expansion I believe.

Hey Warhammer, did you pick up the Blood Bowl fiction book (First in a trilogy!) that Black Industries put out?

Really fun stuff, differentiating the BB universe from standard Warhammer :)

I read one of the Warhammer novels once...in the Gaunt's Ghosts series. Neat story, very interesting universe, but poor writing. SIGH...

Undead Robots?

Wtf have I been doing never checking out Warhammer all these years!

I saw this the other day also that looks really cool.

Warhammer: Mark of Chaos (http://www.gamespot.com/pc/strategy/warhammer/preview_6134458.html)

Great looking shots there and gameplay sounds close to bordering on a Fantasy: Total War. One to keep an eye on. Namco is making it also, which seems pretty odd.

The Undead Robots are the Necron: Think Terminators with Supertech.

They even have a "I'll be Back Rule", that when you kill them (except with some super weaponry), they get back up on the next turn on a roll of 4+ (and have a army leader that allows a re-roll if they're within a certain distance of the fallen Necron)

Of course, if you reduce the army to a certain level, (1/3rd or 1/4th I believe), the rest of the army "phases out" and the Non-Necron player wins automatically.

No I didn't know there was one that came out. I might take a look at it if it is well written. I love the whole Blood Bowl schtick. Those "Did You Know..." things in the manual are priceless!

My only problem right now is figuring out a time to get any books read, between my TT BB league, my FOF leagues, and weekly gaming group, I don't have any time to get anything else done!

They're done by Matt Forbeck. They're not as much focusing on in game action, but the world around it (with some game action).

First one, is imaginatively titled: Blood Bowl

The other two are currently titled: Dead Ball and Death Zone (IIRC)

Someone seriously needs to make a Blood Bowl sim. I know they tried to do something of the sort with "Chaos League", but that game seemed to fall short.

The game play itself should be turn-based, just like the board game, but with some great animation and atmosphere. Have the rest of the game be a career sim type of situation, draft, free agents, all of that stuff. The world is so rich and well-developed, it would be a shame not to take advantage of it.

I even liked that old "Blood Bowl" PC game.

I've been looking for a game that would be fun and run reasonably well on my laptop since I beat Dungeon Siege 2 (which was a fun game.) This game looks like a winner. I just picked it up and am looking forward to trying it out today.

This looks pretty promising. I always felt like most of the Warhammer and Warhammer 40K games always fell just a little short of what they could be. This one seems to be a little closer to the mark.

Honolulu, the best there is right now is the FUMBBL Java online client :/

The only problem with FUMBBL is people ducking other teams. Still, nothing beats good old fashioned Blood Bowl on the pitch, as long as I am not playing against Dwarves with my beloved Woodies.

The game is good but, very very short and it is limited in the # of races...

There is a 40k mod being done for the Battlefield 2 game but, I think right now it is only available to mod to the Vietnam battlefield game.. looks very promising though last I looked several weeks ago.

Oh.. and the 40k books are nothing short of horrific.. I read one and tried to read another but, I've never been so bored in all my life reading a book.

How's the game?

I have no idea how short it is (I've heard that complaint) but it is very good. I've completed the first 2 missions yesterday and had a blast playing both of them. I think on the default normal level it might be too easy, but I'm reserving judgment on that since many RTS games make the first few levels easy to help you get used to the controls. I love the versatility of the space marines, and I think the multiple weapon outfitting idea and the way they do squads are interesting and something I haven't really seen in previous RTS. If you like RTS games, I think this is a very good pick-up.

Dola -

If I read the expansion pack information correctly, it adds 2 different campaigns which at least double the length of the game (if not more.) So that might help with the shortness of the game as well.
