3 mikes down

Sounds like a rap group.

As a Ram fan I have to say this is a good thing. I always hoped he would do well but a guy that coaches from a philosophy that "turnonvers don't really matter to us" always bothered me.

As an offensive co-ordinator with a headcoach to reign him in he's a good thing.
When he's in charge of the whole show it's a different story IMHO.

I agree he was a good OC, but his ego is so big now that he'll never be again. He is going to get at least one more HC job and completely blow-up.

You know, in the right situation, I think he could be a damned good head coach. Such as the Detroit job is tailor made for him. I mean Hell, not like that squad could get any worse.

I think he'll end up in Oakland somehow.

Oh well, there should be a nice pool of HC's to choose from.

He seems like a Raiders kindof guy to me too.

He's an Offensive Coordinator who's offensive as a head coach. Good riddance.

He doesn't impress me as all that sharp but seems like he is highly regarded. When you have Marshall Faulk in his prime it can make you look really smart.

Detroit would be a great fit for him.

I doubt Millen would hire him. Martz is an egomaniac who wants to run the whole she-bang. Plus he's not a motivator, IMO...and the Lions need one of those, methinks.

But Martz isn't a hard-ass, per se. He's a very quirky leader who thinks he's a player's coach. He's loyal to his players but a hard guy to figure out.

he should just be an OC, that's where his strengths lie. man, those Rams team of the late 90's, early 00's were a fucking force. i thought they'd have won 3 Super Bowls before their run came to an end. what a shame.

that's what I'm saying...he isn't a fit.

but what is lost is that he was the oc this whole time. yeah he added some responsiblity but it was still the same offense. Faulk and Bruce got old and the league caught up to them. simple.

I've never been impressed with him.

The Rams' offense faltered over the past few seasons for a variety of reasons, but here's a few from my perspective:

1. QB health, or lack thereof. First Warner and then Bulger. They got hammered around by defenses and were playing injured more often than not.

2. Weak offensive line play. This I pin on Martz, because he thinks he can plug anyone in and get away with it. Same goes for the TE and FB positions. He let his starters leave via free agency and then played marginal guys expecting the same results. He didn't get them.

3. Poor game management. This is a major flaw in Martz's coaching abilities. He sacrifices game management in favor of his "brilliant" offensive scheme.

4. Unwillingness to establish a running game. Sure, Faulk lost a step, but Steven Jackson is a beast when the right plays are called for him and he gets the carries. Yet Martz insists on pass-pass-pass. Yet he has no FB or TE to speak of, so the WRs get camped on. Often it's 7-yard slant, then duck and cover. Stubborn play-calling = predictable play-calling.

5. Bulger lacks Warner's accuracy. He can't hit the WRs in stride like Warner did. The big plays just aren't there.

So why would someone conclude he'd be a great OC and lousy HC. Seems like he's lousy on both counts.

The Rams went to shit because Martz couldn't keep his ass in the box as the OC, period. He took the credit for the Super Bowl victory and the Rams front office ushered Vermeil out like he was a fungus.

I'll agree with you and Kodos. The Black Hole is pulling him in. It is his destiny.
