I take the late <b>John Candy-movies</b>

Maple Leafs

I was wondering when he'd go.

kcchief is up, and once again has two picks this round as part of our trade.

kcchief19
01-06-2006, 06:28 PM
With pick 6.1, we will round our sketch comedy team with (surprisingly) a second non-SNL member. I pick Tracey Ullman.

She has been the creative mind behind two different Emmy winning sketch shows, the first of which spawned a little cartoon known as the Simpsons.Next time you want to bilk my sadsack RWBL Minnesota Twins for a veteran for the pennant drive or a young talent who won't resign with me, I'll remember this. http://www.operationsports.com/fofc/images/smilies/mad.gif GREAT PICK!

Now that I'm afraid my other pick will be gone by my next selection, I'll go with Christopher Guest from movies. Spinal Tap, Princess Bride, Waiting for Guffman, Best In Show, A Mighty Wind ... the list is long and distinguished.

Lewis Black Stand Up

oliegirl
01-06-2006, 07:33 PM
I thought long and hard about this pick...I really, really need some stand up comedians, but all my favorites are gone. Sooooo...I decided to go with someone who some of you might not like, especially those outside of the South. He gained a lot of celebrity 5 - 10 (I don't rememeber exactly when) years ago with his stand up routine and even parlayed that into his own (short lived) tv show. So, with no further ado...

Team Oliegirl selects Jeff Foxworthy for standup

Maple Leafs
01-06-2006, 07:36 PM
kcchief has my sixth round choice, and sent in his pick. He takes Goldie Hawn, movies

Maple Leafs
01-06-2006, 07:40 PM
I like the Foxworthy pick. You'll get some slack for it from people who only know him as the "you might be a redneck" guy, but he's a really good comedian. His stuff is family friendly, and for a good period of time he was the most popular standup comedian in the US. Sure, the redneck stuff became overdone, but even though it was his signature it was a small part of his act.

That said, betweem him and Robin Williams some voters may hurt you ...

Maple Leafs
01-06-2006, 07:41 PM
Schmidty also sent in a pick (see how this works, people?):

Madeline Kahn, sketch

At 6.9, I'll take one of my favorites in Mel Brooks, in movies.

Genius, from Blazing Saddles to History of the World Part 1. He acts, he directs, he writes, and he always cracks me up. Had to take him here because you crafty devils are taking my picks too often now. :)

At 7.2, I'm going to take Eddie Izzard as a stand up.

If you've not seen Eddie preform before, do. He has some of the best stuff I've ever heard...just slightly goofy and with a bit of history thrown in to keep me happy. Again, he needed to be on my team and I was afraid he would get snatched away.

Schmidty

Gene Wilder - Movies.

I've debated taking him several turns, so I'm very happy, and a bit suprised, that he's lasted this long. The man is hilarious. His performance in Young Frankenstein is a thing of beauty. It's funny that I chose him and Madeline Kahn, two of my favorites, back to back this late in the draft.

Maple Leafs
01-06-2006, 11:47 PM
I already have Steven Wright. Might as well back him up with the guy who should have carried on his legacy. What a damn waste of brilliant talent... to be that good, and just throw it away.

At 7.4, I take Mitch Hedberg, standup.

There are plenty of really good duos/groups that haven't beeb picked. It's tough to do, strategically, since you'll have to spend a few picks to get them all and there's no guarantee someone won't block you. And if you only take one, which one? And do the voters penalize you for it?

This is someone I expected to go early, right around Mike Myers (for obvious reasons). He's been laying low for a while, but when I think of the greatness of SNL in the early 90's, he is a major part of why it was so successful.

Dana Carvey - sketch

Have to agree with ML on this one. The 3 Stooges are great because of how they all interact. I don't think I've seen any of them solo, which is kind of how we've been picking. It's more of the idea of individual comedy and greatness, at least IMO, and some groups just don't do individual comedy like stand up, or stand out above others which is how we've been picking for sketch comedy and movies.

I was hesitant to pick Jerry Lewis because he was, for awhile, part of a movie duo (Dean Martin). But he had a pretty good solo movie career, too, which is why I took him. I love Laurel and Hardy, but how can I take one and not the other?

Before Chaplin fell to me in Round 1 and took one of my movie spots, I was planning to use the 1.9 and the 2.2 for Abbott (sp?) and Costello. But it seems kind of weird to take one without the other.

Everybody, please accept my apologizes for holding us up. This weekend my extended family did Christmas down in ol' Springfield, Missouri, and I poorly played my exit strategy. One thing lead to another and yadda yadda I left without my laptop and I was without Internet access.

Thanks for waiting. I might have been better off with Carrot Top. And while I don't Wayans' best work was in movies, I wanted to save my sketch comedy slot. But he's a talented standup, did solid work on SNL and In Living Color and stole The Last Boy Scout from Bruce Willis. He's a pretty versatile guy.

He was on for a bit but didn't do much, then he got fired because he was playing "second cop" in a skit, but when it came time for the live show he dressed up as the Gay Cop he used on In Living Color, causing Loren Michaels to fire him (the only guy hes ever fired).

Just in case this happens again, I'll pull a rule out of my ass:

If you take a guy at a position that you already have filled, the draft will continue. You can either change his position, or drop him and make a new pick if nobody else has picked yet. But if someone else has picked in the meantime, their pick stands (similar to being late on a pick in the NFL draft), and so does yours.

albionmoonlight

Jane is just solid, and, IMO, underrated. She is a very professional comedian. She was one of the original SNL cast members, and--while quite funny in her own right when she needed to be--excelled at playing the straight-laced straight man (or woman) character off of whom the other more "wacky" cast members could play. That kind of acting, IMO, can be a lot harder to do well than just being crazy--but it is the glue that helps keep a comedy routine going.

And, here's a bit of trivia: A devout Catholic, Jane never engaged in the wild and crazy backstage after-parties for which the cast was famous.

And, speaking of great SNL Alumns, great steal of Chevy Chase there.

Here we with back to back picks (albion almost blew this for me earlier :) ). With picks 7.10 and 8.1, I will take Bud Abbott and Lou Costello for movies.

"Who's On First" is one of the most famous comedy routines ever and is still very well known and satired pieces ever. I remember it was actually in one of my reading textbooks when I was in grade school. They made a ton of popular (and very profitable) movies in the 40s and 50s, including all of their monster classic "Abbot and Costello Meet _____," films. Comedy icons.

You can ask Maple Leafs. I actually had sent up the card with Arsenio's name on it before I sent up another runner to tackle the first guy and send Don Rickles instead. I just could not decide if Arsenio was funny or not, or if I just thought that he was funny in 7th grade.

However, since most of us watched Arsenio while we were growing up, I think that he is a pick that will work with a lot of the voters.

dola--

An idea. This will require us to either go on the honor system or have voting made public--things with which people may not be comfortable, and I understand if that is the case.

However, if we can agree on how to do it, I think that it would be neat if all of the team owners had to vote, but had to vote for a team other than their own.

We are as invested in this draft as anyone, and it is kind of a shame that (I assume) all of our votes are just going to go for our own teams. Kind of a waste of good knowledge there.

kcchief19

O'Hara is a tremendous pick. She was on my board, but I was afraid I had gone beyond the norm too many times already, and once I decided on Christopher Guest I felt that going back to one of his most frequent co-stars disrupted my team balance.

I am somewhat suprised Sandler last this long. He's a hit-and-miss guy. There's not telling who will like which if any of his movies. I liked The Wedding Singer and Happy Gilmore, but I'd rather get kicked in the nuts a few hundred times than watch The Waterboy or most of his other flicks. Conversely, there are people who like The Waterboy who hate his romantic comedy fluff.

Still, the guy is box office gold and I consider him strongly throughout the draft.

dola--

Kind of a waste of good knowledge there.I'm with albion if anybody else is. I might vote for somebody's else team anyway if I think they did a better job than me, but I think it would a nice gesture if we all didn't vote for ourselves.

Leslie Nielsen was a great pick. I probably should have taken him instead of Goldie Hawn and gone with Catherine O'Hara as another female pick.

For my final selection, since I don't have a 10th round pick, I'm going with Albert Brooks (standup). The younger kids probably don't remember him as a standup that much, but his work on movies and The Simpsons has almost always been gold to me.

I get the feeling that this is one of those picks that only I will like, but I'll do my best to explain why I like it:

Tom Smothers (Talk Show/Variety)

Along with his brother Dick, Tom lead a show whose subversive nature was belied by the clean cut appearance of its hosts:

The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour, starring the folk singing, comedy duo Tom and Dick Smothers, premiered on CBS in February 1967. A variety show scheduled opposite the top rated NBC programme, Bonanza, the Comedy Hour attracted a younger, hipper, and more politically engaged audience than most other video offerings of the 1960s. The show's content featured irreverent digs at many dominant institutions such as organized religion and the presidency. It also included sketches celebrating the hippie drug culture and material opposing the war in Vietnam. These elements made The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour one of the most controversial television shows in the medium's history. Also, Pete Townshend almost blew himself up on their show when some pyrotechnics misfired--which was pretty cool and has to count for something

There's nobody left who has a standup spot and needs a woman, so I don't think I'm giving anything away by saying this (and if I am, good, because I hope she gets picked): I really wanted to take Rita Rudner here. I think she's hilarious, and she's the only woman to have her own permanent standup show in Vegas. That has to count for something.

But in the end, I can't pass up the chance to take an all-time standup legend who happens to be female. I'm surprised she's still on the board.

I didn't bother with my sitcom pick last round because I was the only one without one, and figured that I'd have my choice of Tim Allen or Ray Romano in the tenth. That worked out well.

It may be a good thing, though, since it forces me to think outside the box a bit. I seriously considered Kelsey Grammar here -- a record twenty years playing the same sitcom character, not to mention a recurring role on the Simpsons. I also scouted Jackie Gleason as an old school pick, as well as Kevin James because I like his standup.

But in the end I went with a guy who created two of the funniest TV characters of all time -- which is impressive, considered they're almost completely different types of humor.

10.7 - Rowan Atkinson, sitcom

I came really close to taking Jackie Gleason for my sitcom pick...I honestly don't think it gets any better than that. The other one I was considering was Carroll O'Conner for Archie Bunker, but even today that show is pretty controversial and has some ugliness to it...plus I needed a female so I went with the ageless Mary Tyler Moore.

Anyway, here's my free agent team.

Patricia Rutledge- Sitcom (Probably the best female physical comic since Lucille Ball. If you haven't seen the BBC "Keeping Up Appearances" I highly recommend it.)

Sacha Cohen- Variety/Talk (Big suprise that nobody took Ali G.)

Buster Keaton- Movie (Equalled only by Chaplin in his era, but largely forgotten now.)

Graham Chapman- Movie (No Python guys taken???)

John Cleese- Sketch (Maybe not the funniest, but the most memorable of the bunch.)

Phil Hartman- Sketch (Too bad the crazy bitch shot him.)

Rita Rudner- Standup (A far second to my hoped for pick of Phyllis Diller.)

Red Foxx- Standup (Most of his stuff wasn't recorded, but he was the King of Comedy during segregation. Sanford and Son doesn't do him justice.)

Jonathan Winters- Standup (The only guy I've seen go ab-lib for ad-lib with Robin Williams and come out ahead.)

John Leguizamo- Standup (Before he hit it big he did some edgy character routines that were every bit as hard hitting as Chappelle. If you can ever see his Latino posing as Japanese do so.)

If I was going to sign a practice squad of undrafted free agents, I'd target:

Movie: This was the toughest category for me. If I had to do it over again, I'd probably make movies a one-person category and go with two for sitcoms. Still, there were some solid choices left undrafted. Buster Keaton has been mentioned as the obvious one. What about Peter Sellers?

Sketch: Sure, he annoys people. But David Spade had a great SNL run. Not often you can pick an Oscar winner here -- how about Jamie Foxx? Or really think outside the box, and take Christopher Walken.

Sitcom: In addition to Grammar and James, Drew Carey is still there. And since we were taking guys who didn't have standup backgrounds, why not Michael J. Fox, one of the few actors with two hit sitcom roles? And why not somebody from MASH? As a deep sleeper, we'll try to sign John Larroquette.

Talk show: Nobody took Jack Benny? He was actually #3 on my list, behind Carson and Letterman.

Standup: My favorite category... I could go another ten rounds on standup alone. Jonathan Winters is an obvious oversight, as is Robert Klein. I desperately wanted to find a spot for Emo Phillips. Rudner should have been picked. In fact, with the woman requirement I'm surprised nobody took Joan Rivers. What about Dennis Wolfberg? Or Ron White, or Bill Engvall, or ...

If I was going to sign a practice squad of undrafted free agents, I'd target:

I was all set to take Wolfberg with my final pick. I remember him as really funny back in 9th grade when I would watch him on Comedy Central's Short Attention Span Theater. In doing my research, however, I found one of his routines on the web--and didn't really like it that much. I don't know if I found a bad routine, or if watching a guy on Window's Media Player while at work is not really the best environment . . . but I just was not laughing. And so I didn't want to take a chance and pick a guy that may have just been funny to me in 9th Grade.

John Larroquette was on my "deep sleeper" list, too.

Movie: This was the toughest category for me. If I had to do it over again, I'd probably make movies a one-person category and go with two for sitcoms. Still, there were some solid choices left undrafted. Buster Keaton has been mentioned as the obvious one. What about Peter Sellers? This was a very hard category for me as well, because largely it's a different kind of humor. Sure, you have your Leslie Nielsen, Will Ferrell or Adam Sandler that just go for the yuks, but most of your acclaimed and best comedic actors are at their best when being subtle and the most popular films tend to be "romantic comedies" -- but are Julie Roberts, Meg Ryan or Sandra Bullock hysterically funny? That's why I eventually stretched for Goldie Hawn, because she was at least zany. Peter Sellers would have been a great choice.
Sketch: Sure, he annoys people. But David Spade had a great SNL run. Not often you can pick an Oscar winner here -- how about Jamie Foxx? Or really think outside the box, and take Christopher Walken.I couldn't pull the trigger on Spade myself (same for Andy Dick) but I was somewhat surprised somebody else didn't either. Jamie Foxx would have been an interesting choice, but I think there are still a lot of better sketch actors out there. Christopher Walken actually crossed my mind briefly, but the outside the box choice I almost made was going with Candice Bergen here -- she's a member of the SNL five-timer club and she's made a few other sketch comedy appearances over the years. If you want a bit further on the edge -- how about Kermit the Frog or any of your favorite Muppets?
Sitcom: In addition to Grammar and James, Drew Carey is still there. And since we were taking guys who didn't have standup backgrounds, why not Michael J. Fox, one of the few actors with two hit sitcom roles? And why not somebody from MASH? As a deep sleeper, we'll try to sign John Larroquette.I think it's amazaing Grammar and Fox didn't go. Carey was another guy I considered, but i'm equallly surprised no one from the Whose Line cast went -- Colin Mochrie and Ryan Stiles are two of the best improv guys around, and Wayne Brady had two shows of his own, albeit they were cancelled. I love John Larroquette, but I think I'm the only one these days -- too many people seem to think he was overrated on Night Court, but I disagree. I also strongly considered squeezing his former castmate Harry Anderson on my team. Alan Alda was on my short list -- another surprise nobody from the show went; well, I guess no one is surprised Jamie Farr went undrafted.

Talk show: Nobody took Jack Benny? He was actually #3 on my list, behind Carson and Letterman. On my board, but not as high as that. Talent and entertainment wise, yes, but I think he was a bit too old school. Unlike guys who have been dead for 30 years like Chaplin or Abbot & Costello whose movies still get play, Benny's most loved work is either gone forever or hidden in the vaults somewhere.
Or Ron White, or Bill Engvall, or ...I was afraid people would think I lost my mind if took Emo Phillips. Robert Klein (David Steinberg is here too) fits into a whole group of old school comedians who were hysterical in their day but just never really kept up with the times. I think the one that surprises me the most is Dennis Miller. I think he's a lot less funny now than he was in his SNL days, but he completes the list of people with comedy albums I own (joining Cosby, Wright and Seinfeld).

I would have selected Judy Tenuta and asked if Shari Lewis & Lambchop counted as one pick or two before I chose Joan Rivers.

I actually like her. Did you know she and Emo Phillips were a couple for quite a while? Imagine if they'd had kids...

On the subject of "out of the box" picks, why not Weird Al in the variety category?

Weird Al was another pick. I figured he could have fit in variety or sketch.

Radii talked me out of taking Judy Tenuta in the 2nd round...seriously. I love her, she is my all time favorite female stand up comedian. She'd be up there for all time stand up comedian too.

Another guy I really really like is Steven Banks. I saw an HBO Special he did a few years ago - he was a guy working at home one night and kept getting distracted, doing all sorts of goofy stuff to avoid working. I only saw it once, but I still remember it and look for it on DVD every now and then, but have never been able to find it. I imdb'd him once, he is writing for Nick. cartoons like Jimmy Neutron now...disappointing that his comedy career didn't take off, but it's a tough business I guess.

I mentioned earlier that there was someone that I viewed on the same level as Carson in Talk/Vareity . That person was Sid Caesar. His was the variety show for many years. Someone else I thought about for stand up I guess was Red Skelton. I remember watching his seagulls and dying laughing as a child.

And still no one picks Danny Kaye. I almost picked him a number of times. Ah well. He was the guy I was refering to earlier (who I thought was flying under the radar). I almost took him too.

I was thinking of taking Walken in my sketch spot too, but didn't know how that would fly. Plus I needed a second woman and decided to take Molly Shannon when there were a few rounds left (and waited til the end).

I thought about Danny Kaye too, as the Court Jester is just hilarious. But Keaton and Sellers are both funny in a whole lot of stuff too.

oh--and the guy I could not beleive was not picked? Jason Alexander (sitcom). A lot of people think that Costanza was the funniest character on the funniest show ever.

I guess that's what comes from having only one sitcom slot.

Absolutely agree. I'm shocked he wasn't picked.
