We've done a few draft threads over the years at FOFC. At one point a few years ago there was a new one sprouting up every few days (including the infamous video game draft). They were a pretty mixed bag in terms of success, but I've seen them do quite well on other forums so let's give it another shot.

So... Welcome to the FOFC Comedy Draft.

How to play:
If you want to play, PM me. If there's a lot of interest, I'll randomly select ten players. If there's not much interest, we'll just go with the first ten.

The draft will be conducted via the foum, in this thread. When it's your turn to draft, you post, ideally with a brief note about the reason for your choice. If you won't be around, you PM someone else your picks in advance to keep things moving.

The draft is a serpentine draft, which is a fancy way of saying that the order reverses each round. Draft order will be determined randomly before we start.

How to win:
The fun here comes more from the draft itself than from actually winning, but just in case it matters: Once the draft is done, we'll hold a vote and let FOFC choose the winner.

The teams:
You will draft a "team" of performers. The idea is to assemble the best possible roster, using your keen sense of humor as well as your crafty drafting skills. Trades are allowed, as long as they don't slow down the action (the idea is to keep things moving as quickly as possible).

Your team will consist of ten funny people, at the following positions:
- Four standup comedians
- Two sketch comedy actors
- Two movie actors
- One sitcom actor
- One variety and/or talk show personality

In addition, at least two members of your team must be female.

It is up to you to decide which position to slot someone in. For example, you can choose Bob Saget as a sitcom actor or a standup comedian. You don't even need to be technically correct -- if you want to draft Carrot Top as a movie actor, go ahead -- but expect to be mocked by observers and penalized by the voters for it.

Any performer may only be selected once. So if someone has picked Dana Carvey as a sketch actor, you can't choose him as a movie actor no matter how much you enjoyed "Master of Disguise".

Edit: You can pick any real person, living or dead. Your choices should be based on the person's body of work, not just right now.

Edit: You are drafting individuals only. If you want to choose a duo or a troupe, you're welcome to -- but you must choose each memeber individually, and others can use their picks to take the remaining members at any time.

Edit: The people you pick for the actor categories do not necessarily have to be comedians or even comedy specialists. If you think all of Arnold Schwarzenegger's comedies were hilarious, go ahead and take him. But be aware that others might not agree.

A few notes:
The draft is open to everyone -- observers are welcome. Discussion of picks is encouraged.

In general, it's considered very poor form to suggest picks during the draft -- the equivalent of being the guy who doesn't play poker but sits at the rail and shouts out to get attention. However, it will happen. If you're the sort of person who thinks you'd be really, really bothered by this, do yourself a favor and don't play.

A final note:
If the idea of doing a just-for-fun draft strikes as you as stupid and/or pathetic, but you're the type of person who likes to post about text sims on an internet forum... well, you may want to give this a miss until your sense of irony develops a little more.

Remember, we want to move quickly. If you are on the list but don't think you'll be around often and don't want to send your choices to someone else so they can pick for you, please let us know and we'll replace you with one of the (many) other folks who didn't get to play.

Maple Leafs
01-04-2006, 11:15 AM
The draft has begun.

There will be no time limit today, since it will take some time for people to realize they're picking. Once we get settled we'll add a time limit of some sort.

I can't stress this enough -- please send your picks in advance if you won't be around. You can send them to me, or to someone else who's pick isn't close to yours, or get someone else to choose for you. Please don't make everyone else wait all day just so you can announce your pick yourself. If you are consistently causing delays and not sending in picks, you may be removed.

Please re-read the rules at the top of the thread to make sure you're clear. I've added three rules based on questions I recieved.

Finally, when announcing your pick, remember to mention the position you're taking the person for.

1.1 DeToxRoxDVHStyle is on the clock!

#2 pick is Steve Martin as a stand-up comedian.

I remember listening to my sister's albums of him when I was a kid. His goofy comedy was a big influence on me, and his later work (Planes, Trains, and Automobiles, Father of the Bride, Parenthood) stands up well today. Definately my all-time favorite.

I'm a big Carlin fan but Pryor, Hicks and Kinnison are all above him on my list.

And I think Martin would have been a better choice in the sketch actor or just actor positions rather than stand up.

There's a couple others I put above Carlin as well, but you need to play to the crowd to win, so Carlin was a good choice. I bet you could get away with picking Martin in the second round.

Very true. My #3 was a non-standup, I wonder if you and I are on the same page.

Good pick by Schmidty I think, everyone's head has been in standup.
True, although the rules do put extra weight on the standup side (intentionally, since I think it's the purest form of comedy).

That said, I like the pick by Schmidty. I think sitcom is going to be a tough category to fill, and he gets a franchise player there. Not as sold on Martin, although he's still a solid first rounder.

Williams is a solid pick. What's interesting about both he and Steve Martin is that they could have gone in other categories -- both would be very strong movie picks, and Williams could be sitcom too. It will be interesting to see how it plays out in terms of which positions end up being hardest to fill.

Easily one of the five greatest standup guys of all-time.

Carlin was an obvious choice, but to me he fits into a category of comedians -- Richard Pryor is in that group to, along with two others I expect to be selected at some point -- that rely too much on shock value and breaking tabboos for the humor. I'll admit I favor comedians who work a bit cleaner, although I'm sure I'll end up with one or two comedians who know how to drop a good f-bomb.

See, I'd strongly disagree here. Seinfeld is a good comedian who had a great sitcom. Sure, he helped pioneer the observational humor form of standup, but even his best stuff is just sort... good. He's never been milk-out-the-nose, drive-off-the-road funny like others. I've actually argued that based on the fame from his show, he's actually one of the most over-rated standup comedians of all time.

But as a sitcom star, he's a great pick.

Although I can see where you're coming from, I think the majority of people know him from his sitcom. I, for one, don't find his stand-up nearly as funny as his show.

That's what I was thinking, and why I had him #1 on my board for sitcom actor. He's much more valuable there than in stand up. There are lots of great stand up comedians to choose from, but the crowd is thin for truely great sitcom stars.

I'm not sure I have a good enough feel for this draft to know whether moving up is a good choice. It's very possible I just traded up to get a guy who would have been there for me in the second round. That said, I'm a believer in value-based drafting.

While there are some big names still available who would make excellent choices, I think there's only category in this draft that has a clear-cut, no-questions-asked leader. Ask a comedian for the name of the greatest standup performer or sitcom actor ever and they'll argue all night. But in this category, there's no debate.

With pick 1.7, the Maple Leafs take talkshow host Johnny Carson.

I think Cosby in standup is huge mistake. He is a sitcom pioneer and as good as his standup is, he is a clossal in that field. In terms of relative worth, as much as I love his standup (own all standup that's on CD) I would have slotted him in sitcom.

Lucille Ball. There's someone who wasn't on my draft board, but this is a wonderful pick. I think you'd be hard pressed to find a better comedian who is a woman and she is arguably the best pick in the sitcom genre. I just love what albion is doing early on here.

Sorry ... I left work and got home and had to track down a furnace guy to come in tomorrow and fix my blower motor. Thank goodness it's only going to be in the 30s tonight.

This pick is painful ...

Jay Leno, standup

Two reasons:

Before he became evil by selling his soul to Helen Kushnick and stabbed in the back the man who gave him his break when Carson didn't like him, Leno was the best standup in the biz. During the 1980s, I don't think there was a better standup. He still has moments, they are just too few and far between. But during the 1980s, he was one of maybe five people for whom I would sneak past my bedtime and stay up late to watch Dave on a school night.

Reason No. 2: I figure the variety/talk show host category will get thin with Carson, Letterman and Leno off the board. If I have him at standup, somebody else will need to dip a bit deeper in the pool for a talk show guy.

kcchief19

I struggled with this one, there are 2 or 3 left out there that I really wanted to take, but in the end I decided Murphy was the best pick...thanks for the props :)I double prop. I think Eddie Murphy is well on his way to being the next Bill Cosby. Their careers have many parallels, although Murphy has been more successful on film than Cosby was. But when the rose was off Cosby in the '80s, he reinvented himself as a family comedy star -- a path that Murphy is following now. It's just a matter of time before Eddie Murphy ends up with a top-rated sitcom on NBC Must See TV Thursday Night.

I pretty much agree with this 100%. I had Leno on my list, also as a standup instead of talkshow host. People forget how good he was back then. He's good now too -- still among the hardest working standup comedian in the business.

The only downside to the pick is that some people have such a negative reaction to him (usually because they're big Letterman fans) that you may lose votes on name value alone.

Nice run of picks...

The best of the bunch, I think, was Newhart. Not only is the guy hilarious in general, but he achored two of the all-time great sitcoms. Fantastic pick.

I was wondering where Cleese would go. He was a guy I was half hoping would slip further since he was part of a group, but he's a very solid pick here.

Benny Hill isn't a bad choice, although I didn't have him on my list anytime soon. I'm not sold on Gervais, though. I like his work, but he feels like a reach in the third round given some of the other sitcom performers who are still available.

albionmoonlight

It kills me that I can't use him in sitcom, but I think that he also works in standup--where he had a lot of success and was a pioneer both in "Blue" Comedy and for every black comedian who came after him. And, because of his sitcom power, there is no way he is lasting until I pick again:

Redd Foxx (standup).

I know that I lost some value here because other Monty Python guys will get picked later, and he will look like just one of the Python guys once people vote.

But, in my mind he is the best of the bunch and the most recognizable, so I wanted to make sure that I locked him down.

Continuing my streak of off-beat selections ...

Phil Hartman, sketch comedy

Tempted to take him as a sitcom actor for NewsRadio and The Simpsons, but I think his work on SNL is more well known than NewsRadio. Some others I should have probably taken, but again a sentimental choice for me.

I would have taken Bob Newhart next in a heartbeat. I should have taken him on my last pic.

I sent ML my next pick, but I'm here so here it is.

Roseanne Barr Stand Up

May not be the most popular and I'm not sure if many here are fans of her comedy. In fact, I'm not much of a fan of her's either. This pick is more out of repect for what her stand up career did. It revolutionized female stand up comics. Not to mention, she was named the 9th best stand up ever by Comedy Central.

Excellent pick on on Roseanne. I was wondering how far she would slip. Woman will be tough to come by. I think that Comedy Central list had less than 10 women on it. Again, I also took her instead of Hartman.

I'm stunned Jim Carey fell so far. I wouldn't take him because I'm not a fan, but I projected him as a second rounder.

Maple Leafs
01-05-2006, 04:27 PM
OK, here's the deal...

I had Roseanne slotted in for this round (was going to put her in the sitcom spot). I think she'd be a fantastic value here on merit alone, and with two women per team required she's an outright steal.

My backup plan was Phil Hartman. One of the greatest sketch comedians of all time. If that didn't work out, it was going to be Jim Carrey, to get started on the movie category.

I hate you all.

Anyways, now I'm stuck taking someone who I'm actually not a huge fan of. I think she's marginally over-rated as a standup, and to make matters worse I'm going to squeeze her into the movie category instead. On the other hand, she's a very recognizable name with mainstream appeal, has had several movie hits and is a big enough comedy star that she's hosted the Oscars. And I need to draft a broad. So I guess that's OK for round four.

With pick 4.7, I take Whoopi Goldberg (movies)

I was thinking of Jim Carey, but to be honest, there are a lot of comedies of his style that had pretty good comedy movie careers. If the one I have in mind slips (and no ML, it's he's not on the list I sent you :p), I'll take him soon. Maybe next pick, but I think he's under the radar and could slip a couple of more rounds.

I believe that Oscar hosting is eligible for an Emmy in the variety/musical category, so I think it fits.

I know which two women I want -- one I think will be gone within less than a round, the other will probably drop to where ever I want to take her.

I've just never understood the dearth of women comedians. There are plenty of funny women, but I guess the glass ceiling keeps them down.

Okay... looks like it to me, too.

My next pick is kind of a risk, but I am such a big fan of his that it would upset me to see him on another team.

With pick 3.10, I pick Bob Newhart. I'm tempted to use him in standup, but I think I will stick him in the sitcom role for now.

His standup album beat out Elvis's album and the Sound of Music soundtrack in sales upon its release and won a Grammy. He had two successful sitcoms with the Bob Newhart Show (that lasted 6 years) and Newhart (that lasted 9 years). He is now an occassional cast member on Desperate Housewives.

Another clean comedian and one of my favorites. I considered taking him early, but thought that he might be somewhat forgotten and would last. He is one of my clear cut favorite entertainers.
Newhart was my projected 3rd round pick. I agree he is a top performer at either the standup or sitcome position. Great pick-up I think.

Interesting idea. I'm not sure what to say. I suppose the only drawback would be that none of his know what his monologues where like. That might not have been that funny, although Hal Holbrook's recreation of them is quite funny.

It does offer up a fine line. Will other people who are predominately writers but "perform" from time to time qualify as standup? I'd hate to drop any names of people that would fit into this category, so I'm hesitant to use a modern example.

Yeah, I've gone a bit old school on some of my picks. I just wanted to avoid the "look at comedy central's top 100 list and pick the highest rated" thing that I assume a lot of others are doing. The roster limits do constrain the teams a bit. I keep thinking of really funny people, and then realizing that they are sitcom actors/actresses, a category in which I am already full. And my idea of picking a movie duo failed once Chaplin fell unto my lap and I had to pick him.

With pick 5.10, I will pick the King of All Media, Howard Stern to fill my talk show/variety slot.

He is very well known, has had a long and distinguished career in radio, but has also made a huge dent in in film, book sales, and television. And, is going to be a big factor in the future of satelite radio.

With pick 6.1, we will round our sketch comedy team with (surprisingly) a second non-SNL member. I pick Tracey Ullman.

She has been the creative mind behind two different Emmy winning sketch shows, the first of which spawned a little cartoon known as the Simpsons.
