Who has the axe fell on? I'm taping survivor instead of Idol...so I won't be able to watch the show later.

Yeah, Paula was cuckoo for coco puffs tonight. She wasn't even coherent. I think Seacrest was being honest when he was trying to get her to quit joking around as he was about to announce who was leaving, since it was uncomfortable. That was plain weird.

So, does anyone think Sasha's face looks similar to Katharine's? Maybe, it's just me.. Anyway, I like both of their faces.

Eh? You talkin' to me? :)

Yes, Paula was most definitely high or drunk or something. She was completely whacked out.

As for the contestants, I got it almost exactly right by picking the bottom 3 guys and the bottom 3 girls. I thought Kevin would go over David this week, though, so I guess the puppy-dog syndrome forces me to endure him a bit longer.

As to GWB's comments on certain parts of Heather's anatomy... agreed. And I think the girls overall are much hotter this year than in year's past, it seems like. There are several that are pleasing to the eye.

Edit: I should say were since two of them are now gone.

I have to admit that I was surprised (pleasantly) at how poorly Kevin did, given the attention he's been getting and the love Randy and Paula gave him. I have to give the voting public credit for not buying into the BS. Honestly, I thought he was a lock for the top 12 thanks to all of that BS. But in the end, it just came down to the fact that he looks incredibly out of place and appears to be the antithesis of Taylor in terms of his ability to show feeling and groove and rhythm while singing. He should be gone next week.

This is late, but I wanted to say this:

In last night's performance, I think Taylor said "WOOOO!" more times than Ric Flair has said in his entire wrestling career.

Ksyrup

Yeah, that's what I referred to previously as his tourette's syndrome. I'm praying for him to throw out a spontaneous "motherfucker!" one of these times. That would be AWESOME.

Interesting tidbit of a backstage subplot...

That rumor about Katharine McPhee leaving Idol had a kernel of truth to it. Rumor has it, all of the contestants are feeling the stress and exhaustion from the show's long hours--which showed in last night's low energy performances. And, when Katharine, who lives in the local LA area, wanted to leave the hotel to go home and rest--some of the kids complained. After all, most of the contestants are miles away from their own homes, without the luxury of family nearby, like Katharine. They felt allowing her to go home just wouldn't be fair. The producers made her stay, but her mom was insisting that she be allowed to leave. Mom said that if she "doesn't get the rest that she needs," they would find somebody to get Katharine medically released from her contract. This happened over the weekend--and you will note that Katharine is still with us--so not to worry. That tidbit, making its way around the internets, originally found at Survivor Sucks.

Well no surprises with who went home last night-thank god Brenna is gone. The only mild surprise was Kevin being in the bottom 3.

This next week will be an interesting one. Other than Kinnik, I think all the other girls deserve to be in the Top 6-A bad performance likely will determine who goes besides Kinnik. Right now I think it will be Melissa who goes.

With the guys, with Kevin dropping into the bottom 3 this week, I think he goes next week along with either Bucky or Will joining him. Ace had better watch out though if he puts in another bad performance.

And Paula was clearly high and/or drunk last night. That was such an embarassing moment for her and Idol.

About Paula... was it just me or was Simon actually delighting in the fact she was high and feeding her with nonsense to say? I bet he's secretly delighted he had the opportunity to taunt her like that.

I think Kinnik and Melissa will go home next week for the girls. The guys will probably be Kevin and Bucky. As someone said, these weeks leading up to the final are just trimming the fat. In my opinion, Chris and Kelli will be the last two standing. I can not remember, does 1 and 2 have to be one male and one female?

I say Chris and Katherine. I don't think there's a requirement about the last two being one girl/one guy, but I see these two as the ones to beat. The top 6 are those plus Lisa, Elliott, Paris and Taylor, with Mandisa barely missing out on that group. My guess is that none of the others even have a chance; it's just the order in which they're eliminated.

GoldenEagle

My Top 6 are:

Chris
Kellie
Geoden (sp?)
Lisa
Ace
Mandisa

I am basing that on stage presence as well as voice. That is who I think America will vote for. Ace sucked the other night, but he has a good voice and the female vote will really push him across. I do not see Taylor going much farther, especially after his lackluster performance the other night. I could see someone like Ayla or Will sneaking into the top 6. But I think America has shown us that they are not going to vote on looks, as Becky was booted the first week.

An abbreviated form of the ratings this week, as I was out of town all last week and just watched the performances on tape tonight. Also, knowing who was eliminated this week already, it's just not as interesting.

The Ladies:

It was a down week, with not a whole lot separating the top performances.

1. Melissa McGhee 87
2. Paris Bennett 83
3. Lisa Tucker 81
4. Mandisa Hundley 80
5. Katharine McPhee 78
6. Kellie Pickler 76
7. Ayla Brown 69
8. Heather Cox 55
9. Kinnik Sky 50
10. Brenna Gethers 29

I completely agree with the choices the audience made, eliminating Brenna and Heather. Kinnik isn't going to last much longer, though. I'm finding Ayla more and more robotic each week. Kellie dropped quite a bit with a dull performance. Katharine had her moments, but started very rough. Mandisa was good, but not consistent, either. Paris is amazingly polished, but annoying. Lisa was solid again and Melissa gave a very pure performance.

The Men:

The men were better this week, with the top performers separating themselves quite a bit.

1. Elliott Yamin 97
2. Chris Daughtry 92
3. Gedeon McKinney 84
4. Ace Young 79
5. Taylor Hicks 78
6. Will Makar 69
7. Jose Penala 65
8. Bucky Covington 56
9. David Radford 38
10. Kevin Covais 33

I can't argue with the audience this time, either. Jose has some potential, but that's twice he's has some painful moments in his songs - just not entertaining. David was lifeless crooning, much worse than last week. I don't get Kevin at all, I thought that was one of the most uninspired performances ever on the show. Bucky started okay, but fell apart. Will has a very pure voice, but he's also very immature sounding. Taylor was better, though he might have Tourette's and he does get sloppy at times. Ace had an off week, but he'll be back. Gedeon started shaky, but quickly recovered with a very strong performance. Chris showed enormous skill tackling his song and Elliott nailed an extremely difficult song. The top four guys this week are definite contenders for the overall title.

For this coming week, I'll just make a quick advance prediction: Kinnik and Ayla are eliminated on the ladies' side and Will and Bucky go home on the mens' side. Kevin will live on to annoy millions for at least another week or two.

Read no further if you're west coasting along and don't want to know anything about tonight's performances.

I thought it was a very, very weak night overall. By the end of the show, the judges were desperate to latch on to anything. Much too much praise for some mediocre performances.

To the ratings:

1. Katharine McPhee: Her personality comes through on songs like this, and that's what makes it look effortless. It wasn't a great performance, but it hit the mark - something no one else did tonight. I think she's the best performer among the ladies, though not the most talented. Score of 85.

2. Lisa Tucker. She is remarkably consistent, which is made all the more remarkable by her age. I worry a little bit about her in the theme weeks, but she's the most talented of the youngsters. Score of 80.

3. Mandisa Hundley. Far too much raving about what was a decent performance, but helped along quite a bit by the backup singers, who did the hard work in the lower ranges Mandisa was afraid to try. And then there are passages that she hits perfectly that no one else can hit. She's a definite wild card, but ultimately - and this is a personal preference - I just don't like the hit or miss style. Score of 77.

4. Kellie Pickler. To put a performance like this in the top half of the ladies tonight shows exactly why I thought tonight was a fairly dismal night in the Idol annals. She missed a bushel of notes toward the end of the song, and I think the reason is that the scale of Black Velvet is difficult, and possibly she just plumb forgot it. Yet Simon said he likes Kellie more than Carrie Underwood. Sure, I can understand that, as long as you're looking for a replacement for Paris Hilton in The Simple Life. But Carrie can sing much better. Score of 74.

5. Paris Bennett. It's not the song choice, Paris is a 70-year-old woman in a 17-year-old's clothing. And while her rendition was competent, it was also dull city. She took all the energy out of Gloria Estefan. Score of 73.

6. Melissa McGhee. I hope she doesn't go, because she is very attractive, and I think she's been much, much better in past weeks. But she did shout more than sing, and if closed your eyes at all, you'd think Ann and Nancy Wilson were tied up and beaten, then forced up on stage. Score of 64.

7. Ayla Brown. The singing robot could make The Star Spangled Banner sound like one of Yanni's Greatest Hits. Her melodies mumble, and while she's usually in tune, the only power she can generate with her voice sounds straight out of a voice trainer's exercise program. Score of 58.

8. Kinnik Sky. Just dreadful. Out of tune most of the way, and very low energy for that type of song. Score of 38.

Kinnik is gone. There can't be much doubt about that. The judges seem to think Melissa blew herself out of the competition. I'm not so sure. I don't see where Ayla's fan base is going to come from, and Melissa beat her soundly the first two weeks. So I hope Ayla goes instead. Seems about 50/50 right now.

I don't think much of Pickles, really. She's overplaying the hick thing to the point where she's starting to appear more like Enis from Dukes of Hazzard than Carrie Underwood. Katherine McPhee's voice is just amazing - on that alone, I think she's the best of the women. But I wasn't floored by her tonight. She's almost too in contol of her voice. and it seems to hold her back on her performances. I'd still like to see her in the top 3, though.

Would you change your mind about Ayla if I told you Yanni was just arrested on a domestic abuse charge?

I am completely in love with Katharine McPhee. She's cute, she's beautiful, she's hot... She is at the top of my "list". I could watch her sing all day. She could read me the phone book and she would have my complete attention.

And there's something about Kelly too... She's are Carrie-lite, but I almost like her as much as Ms. Underwood. She's not as cute, she's not as talented, her body isn't as good, and as weird as it is to say, she's nowhere near as intelligent as Carrie... but I may like her even more. Something about extremely dumb Southern blondes that is enrapturing.

Tonights top 8:
1. Katharine - ahhhhhhhhhhhhh... I really don't think I can quantify my feelings.
2. Kelly - I didn't think she sang all that well, but everything after won me over.
3. Mandisa - I didn't think the song was that great, but I think her presence alone could have her win this thing. I think my expectations for her are so high that anything less than perfection is a disappointment.
4. Lisa - She didn't sound great, but there are times where you could see a lot of talent.
5. Paris - She was nice and jumpy, like always.
6. Ayla - I like her, but she looked horrible and didn't sound great.
7. Melissa - I really don't like her. She looks like a "special" Sharona from Monk. I hope she goes.
8. Kinnik - Completely overmatched.

I think that of the girls, Katharine is the only one that can realistically give the guys a run for their money in the end. She has everything a guy could want, but I'm not totally sure that translates into what makes a good pop star. Mandisa, to put it bluntly, is too heavy. I think she has immense talent, but I don't think America can get past that for a female. Kelly doesn't have the talent, Lisa and Paris are too young, and Ayla looks like a rich girl who's slumming.

I did NOT see what the fuss over Mandisa was about. I thought she did very well, but I have heard better vocals this season. I think its been said time and time again that American Idol is just not about the vocals. Paris and Mandisa can sing, but they do not have the total package. I thought Lisa was mediocre tonight. Kellie does not have the best vocals, but she can get by and she is very likeable.

I take a look at Paris and think that she belongs on the Cosby Show instead of American Idol. I think Simon was right on in the fact that Kinnik and Melissa will be going home tonight. Also, you can tell that Ayla is doing something that she is not up on stage. On all the clips, she is in athletic wear. But up on stage she is all dressed up and does not look comfortable. I laughed when that metro sexual guy stood next to her.

Yeah, I'm finding myself liking Katherine more and more each week. She's one of the top 2 (along with Chris) if you ask me.

Pickler, on the other hand, is starting to annoy me more and more. It was cute at first. Now I find myself wondering whether she's making it all up. I refuse to believe that America won't tire of her quickly if she continues as she has been.

My rankings for tonight:

Mandisa
Katherine
Lisa
Kellie
Melissa
Paris
Ayla
Kinnik

My guess is that Melissa and Kinnik are gone. But Ayla did poorly enough that she could squeek into that bottom two in my opinion.

Overall, better than last week, but not as good as week 1 for the girls. I probably liked Mandisa the best, but not by much. It was a pretty even pack amongst the top singers.

As I thought from last week, Melissa and Kinnik will go. Melissa really did shout that song more than sing it. I actually thought it was Kinnik's best performance, and didn't really notice that she was off-key as much as the judges thought she was.

The last person in the Bottom 3 will be interesting. I think any of the remaining girls except Mandisa could be there. Right now I think it will be Lisa for singing an unknown song, but I don't think she's in real danger of leaving. if they base it on last night alone, Paris could be in the bottom 3 too. I did like Paris and Lisa's more grown-up look last night though. There seems to be a real hate her/love her relationship developing for Ayla which could hurt her (I'm on the love her side, but that wasn't her best performance last night). I've never been a huge Katherine fan, and it'll be interesting to see if those rumors that were flying around her about leaving the show will hurt her. She's the most likely of the remainders to be safe I think though. I actually liked a lot of Kellie's performance last night, I think she really sold it. But yeah the dumb blonde stuff is starting to wear thin.

I think it's tight at the bottom to be honest. The 4 I see sailing through are Katherine, Lisa, Paris and Mandisa, on talent and hype.

I think Kellie gets through because of her dumb blonde act. It's getting tired though, coz she was repeating her "calamari" thing from last week. And is she really that dumb/naive/stupid? It works this week but it's beginning to appear contrived.

Kinnik is definitely out, barring a miracle. She's been consistenly the weakest of the females IMO and it's time for her to go.

What will be interesting is the toss-up between Ayla and Melissa. I thought Melissa performed well actually but what do I know. But Ayla looks better IMO. Going to be close.

Katharine also bounces in all the right ways... mmmm

Anyway, the guys rankings for tonight, updated in somewhat real time
1. Chris - easy. he missed a little tonight, but he's still the best.
2. Gideon - I don't really like him, and he wasn't great tonight, but decent.
3. Bucky - There are times when he sounds like he could be a run of the mill singer, but other times he just sucks.
4. Kevin - bye bye.
5. Taylor - I thought he sounded terrible tonight, he may have had fun, but it was his worst performance so far
6. Ace - He sounded horrible as usual, but I'm having a tough time determining if he was worse than the two below... that was painful... its like someone took his balls... but then i remember he doesn't have any.
7. Peter Brady - I don't know his real name, and I don't think it matters. May have been worse than Corvais.
8. Elliot - Not to be too crass, but good thing he has some hearing loss so he doesn't have to hear himself sing. I don't know how much of a base he has, but this may have been enough to get him to go home.

In summation, I think Elliot may have played his way out of this one... it depends on his fan base, if he has one. Before tonight, I would have said Peter Brady and Kevin, but I could see one of the two sneak into the top 6 guys.

As for the leaders, this is Chris's contest to lose. I don't know if he'll struggle during theme weeks, but he's easily the best/most polished of a the singers. I'd still vote for Katharine if that means I get a date with her.

I thought Taylor was right on; a bit too much like the original at first, then he Taylorfied it at the end. Covais, once again, was bordering on horrific. That was like the Vienna's Boys Choir does R&B. I've never heard someone who sings in tune sound so bad. And Bucky was awful.

I agree about Elliott.

My list from tonight:

Elliott - Excellent voice.

Chris - Very good song

Taylor - Energetic with good but not great vocals

Gideon - Very good voice tonight

Ace - That falsettio is hard to do, but I didn't like the performance

Bucky - Didn't articulate well, but still not as dreadful as the bottom 2..

Either order: Will and Kevin - both sounded weak, uninspired, and out of tune at times.

I thought Elliott was horrible tonight - easily his worst performance if you ask me. Chris wasn't as good as in the past, but he's still the best guy overall. And once again, I was impressed with Gedeon. I continue to be surprised that he's not getting a lot of attention, and I suppose it's because he's kind of weird. But he has the voice, and he's a good performer.

My rankings just on tonight would be:

Gedeon
Chris
Taylor
Ace
Bucky
Elliott
Will
Kevin

Kevin is just painful to watch, honestly. I would cringe if he was singing at a high school performance. Can he carry a tune? Yes, for the most part. But come on, we're talking about actually paying someone to perform. Please make him go away.

I have to think two of Kevin, Bucky and Will are gone. My money's on Will and this being the week Kevin goes.

Tonight's ratings are brought to you by Hans Christian Andersen. No, not the guy who kicked for the Chiefs and other teams for thirty-something seasons, it's the Hans Christian Andersen who brought us such classics as "The Marsh King's Daughter" and "The Girl Who Trod on the Loaf." I assure you the latter is a worthy read.

1. Gedeon McKinney. The Ugly Duckling. That smile grates on your nerves. You're ready to hate him, admit it. He starts singing and you're not impressed. But by the end of the song you're fully entertained. Another solid performance by a guy who's turning into a swan as we watch. Score of 83.

2. Chris Daughtry. The Steadfast Tin Soldier. Chris is a little guy, but he can rock out with anyone. I thought this was his worst performance to date, but it was a very mediocre night. Score of 81.

3. Ace Young. The Little Mermaid. Ace's gender identity may be a little uncertain, but he can mesmerize little girls with the best of them. I no longer believe he's a lock for the final four or five, but he's versatile and takes a lot of chances. The falsetto was bad, the rest was pretty good. Score of 73.

4. Elliott Yamin. The Shadow. Last week, I thought Elliott had the best performance of the entire season to date. This week, he was tentative and seemed to lack confidence. Still, he kept in tune for the most part and was mildly ambitious. Score of 69.

5. Kevin Covais. The Toad. Just not working for me. I still think of Kermit the Frog every time he opens his mouth. I didn't think he was horrible this week, just not the kind of singer that can go far in this competition. Score of 61.

6. Taylor Hicks. The Emperor's New Clothes. I get heat for this, more than you'll ever know, because my wife thinks he's great. He still sounds badly out of tune, the style is annoying. Yeah, I get that what he's doing has a high degree of difficulty. But it's painful to listen to and I'm wondering if the judges are just afraid to criticize him because he's such an audience favorite. Score of 58.

7. Bucky Covington. The Thorny Road of Honor. Bucky is true to his roots. He just can't sing about them very well. On the bright side, he's probably nailing Kellie Pickler like she owes him money, whatever that means. Score of 53.

8. Will Makar. Soup from a Sausage Skewer. Quite frankly, that was the worst performance I've ever seen on American Idol. Why did he even bother to show up tonight? Score of 15.

Who is going? Definitely Will. Any support he had was lost to Ace and Kevin today. The Kevin fans will rally around his poor showing last week, so I think Bucky is in considerable danger. I worry a little about Elliott, but I think the judges like him enough to keep his support intact.

The voting polls were busy for Chris, and the other person I voted for, Elliot, was real easy to get through. That doesn't sport too well.

There was about a half hour left in the voting process when I was making these calls. I just thought I'd see how many votes I could get in before I got a busy signal for Elliot, and I got about 50 calls in before it finally hit me with a busy.

Commenting as I watch (highlights -Lowlights):

Geddeon - I liked him last week, but he was trying too hard this week.

Chris - Very talented. I hate him. It's like he's the lead singer from Nickel Creedback Teenage Moelster". This song was bad, but he'll make the top 4-5.

Kevin - I am the biggest Don McLean fan ever (perhaps literally), and I was more disgusted than I ever have been in AI. "Vincent" is a soft, soulful song, and he tried to turn it into an emotionally-bereft power ballad. Add in the fact that he is AWFUL, and I would have slapped him if I were in attendance.

Bucky - He's a hick and I hate "modern country", but I just like the guy. *shrug*

Will - Terrible. Period. Gone tomorrow.

Taylor - My favorite AI contestant was back on his game again. After being off for the first line of his song, he just kicked ass. So much passion and so much charisma. He should win this show easily.

Elliott - My second favorite on the show, he has the best overall voice. This song he sang was bad for him. It was impotent. It was on key and such, but it was hopelessly weak in emotion. I expect him to pick it up next week.

Ace - Awful. If he wasn't "pretty", he'd be gone long ago. As my wife put it, "Knowingly flaunting that you are beautiful, while being an average-to-crappy singer, means that you are junk". I love that woman. :)

It's a pity 6 girls have to go through because I think the judges are right, the guys are much better. The only performances I didn't like were Kevin's and Will's. Chris was only ok for me, surprising coz he was really good the past 2 weeks. And the Ace falsetto thing was just odd .. guy comes out dressed to rock and then he's like all girly :P

Overall, the guys were good. Performance I really liked was Gadeon's and Elliot's.

My thoughts on the performances:

Gedeon-When the Top 24 weeks began, thought he never had a shot at making the Top 12. Now he's a candidate for Top 6 in my mind. I think the theme weeks are going to hurt him more than many of the others though. This was my least favorite of his performances, but as Randy says, he knows the type of songs he should be singing.

Chris-Love the song he sang, didn't like him singing it as much. Seemed a bit drugged or ready to fall asleep at points during it. :) But clearly a Top 6 and overall winner candidate at this point.

Kevin-Vincent is one of my all-time favs, and it made me very sad to see him butcher it. Looked like a high-school talent contest performance. He shouldn't have been invited to Hollywood till he got out of high school and had some singing/performance lessons.

Bucky-Wow. If he goes tonight, he should be blaming whoever chose that arrangement of the song. That was an "adult contemporary" version of a country song, and it made him sound awful. He wasn't going to go far past tonight anyway, but I think that sealed the deal. Have to root for him a bit though, since I'm an identical twin too. :)

Will-Another that needed to come back after he graduated. But I think he's the more polished of the Kevin/Will duo, and I enjoyed his performance. I think he squeaks by for another week, but will need to channel Josh Groban next week to survive for any longer.

Taylor-another hard to watch, good to listen to performance. His uniqueness will keep him alive in the Top 12, but it'll be interesting to see how far he will go. The song was a good choice for his voice.

Elliott-Lucky he had such good performances in the past weeks. I thought this was one of the worst of the night, and I can't believe Randy "out of pitch man" Jackson actually liked it. You could tell he didn't particularly like the way he was singing it during the performance. I thought a lock for Top 6 before, but he needs to come back next week with a strong performance to regain that status for me.

Ace-I give him credit for showing off his ability and range, but I generally don't like men singing falsetto. I cringed when he said he was going to sing a Michael Jackson song. Such a bad choice for him. When he went back to his normal voice it was good though. I still want him in a Bottom 3 just to wake him up, cause I think he has a lot of potential. Now I'm beginning to wonder though.

Girls Gone: Melissa and Kinnik
Guys Gone: Kevin and Bucky.

I think Lisa is by far the most talented person in the competition this year, but she just doesn't generate much excitement... It would be a shame if Eliot went home after that bland performance, he was easily the best guy through the first three episodes.

My guess for going home tonight is Melissa, Kinnik, Peter Brady, and Bucky. I think Kevin is by far the worst remaining, but I bet he'll stick around to tormet us for a few more weeks ala John Stevens.

I've never liked the guy, and I can't explain why. He's a good singer and performer, for what he does. Certainly better than Bucky. But something about the way he looks bugs the hell out of me. I think Simon said it best the first night of the top 24 performances, and it ended up being his downfall. Watching the old footage, I honestly think he would have gone farther had he just not grown the mustache. It made his weird smile that much more of a pronounced, bizarre feature. As strange as it sounds, I think that made a difference.

Wow couple of shockers tonight. Melissa over Ayla was a bit of a shocker, guess Ayla's background came into play there after all. Too bad I really thought she was a darkhorse to win it all.

Gedeon's appearance probably was a factor in his leaving, but I think he was very unlikeable off the stage-just seemed a bit arrogant to me. Still he shouldn't have gone home yet-he gave three good performances which is about 2 or 3 more than Bucky and Kevin can say.

I liked Kinnik and Will, but it was pretty clear they weren't going to win the whole competition.

Ksyrup
03-10-2006, 09:57 AM
As much as I don't like Gedeon, there's no way Covais or Bucky were better than him in any facet - even appearance, for that matter. I just have no clue how anyone could find Covais remotely entertaining to listen to or look at. Simon was dead on when he said the guy sounded like an 11-year old singing that starry night song. He's not only the whitest white boy I've ever heard, but he's also got the voice/body of a pre-teen. That's usually not a great combination...

Yes, looks strange, but I can't argue with the system. It takes into account likelihood of pornos emerging, dirt, and the possibility of having a relationship with one of the judges or Ryan Seacrest (I'll give you a hint, the system docked someone for having a relationship with Ryan, and the name starts with A and ends in E and has a C somewhere in the middle).

Bo Bice needs to be in a rock band in the mold of Nickleback. if that bad looking guy with that big schnoz (nose) from Nickleback can be in a popular band, Bo Bice should be able to do it too.

Bo needs to be in a band whose sound is like Nickleback and Creed. then, and only then, will he be minutely successful. you can't have someone who looks like he was an extra from the movie "Almost Famous" singing that bad song "Real Thing". btw, that song likely broke the record for most pop cliche lyrics. i googled the lyrics and found these oft-used gems:

1. "driving me insane"
2. "keeps me hangin on"
3. "It feels like you're taking a part of me with you"
4. "Every word I say, I mean it"

these all need to be retired now.

Fuel reportedly offers Idol's Chris Daughtry a job as its lead singer
American Idol 5 frontrunner Chris Daughtry impressed the judges and the public with his rendition of “Hemorrhage” by Fuel last week. And he also impressed Fuel, so much so that they’ve reportedly offered him a job as their lead singer.
Jeff Abercrombie, the group’s bass player, told Extra that Chris did “a great job. This guy delivered. And he delivered like he’d written the song himself.” The band’s lead singer, Brett Scallions, left the group early in February. And following Chris’ performance, Randy Jackson told Access Hollywood that “Chris just got offered to be in the band Fuel, the lead singer is gone so they are trying to get it together.”
But it may not be a sure thing. The group is having a contest (http://www.fuelweb.com/auditions/) to replace their lead singer. Their web site’s announcement for this search mentions Chris’ performance, but also asks others to send in performances for consideration. Of course, Chris is currently handcuffed to Idol by its contract, so by the time he can sing for Fuel, its original members will be long gone.

She does have a better voice than Lisa. Better than any of them. If she can get the performance thing down, she *should* win. But she's made some bad song choices in previous weeks, so that could be her downfall.

i actually like seacrest a little more this year, he's more relaxed, better banter. as i type this, katherine has the best "i don't know" in the history of the world. but lance bass? don't go there katherine. and i think i saw James woods in the crowd.

Mcphee - I'll say now I'm biased, because i think i love her. Easily the best sounding of the night. She was a little over the song a few times, but shes just so beautiful. Lisa should see how she controlled the song, that's what I mean. Lisa may have a better voice, but katherine knows how to sing a song. The dress isn't great, but those sweater cows are excellent.... i don't know if i could love her anymore. my american idol.

taylor - first thoughts, they made him look kind of old. His voice doesn't sound as good right now, i think the acoustics are off a little, or the hotel tv sucks. taylor sounds pretty good, what i expected. doesn't have the best voice of the competition, but he makes the best use of what he has. katherine has a permanent #1, but taylor is easily #2.

Paris - First, don't talk, she may be sick, but its sounds like someone is strangling a kitten. She has a very good voice, but its a church voice. I mean that in the least racist way possible. There are baptist church voices, catholic church voices, black church voices, thats how life is. Doesn't make their voices any worse than a great singers, can still be a great singer, but that doesn't mean they're right for this competition. I went to college with a girl who had a catholic girl voice. Great voice, but outside of the church, it sounds out of place. Paris sounds a bit sick tonight. She screamed a lot of that song, especially the strong notes. Could have been good, but was just average.

Wow, Simon even liked it. At the beginning of the competition I would have bet Paris to win it all, but as the weeks go on, she is proving that she is just not right for this competition. She is too old school. And i HATE the way she says 'thank you,' like a little baby doll.

Apparently none of these people have ever heard the RHCP's version of Higher Ground from what, 1988? I told my wife 2 hours ago the only song he could possibly sing was Higher Ground, and they're acting like he chose this Stevie Wonder song and took a huge risk making it a rock song. It could be a big hit? Uh, guys, that was the RHCP's biggest hit song until Give it Away.

It was good, but he didn't invent this song as a rock song. That was about as obvious a choice for a particular performer as you'll find on this show.

I thought Taylor was great, but I like him anyway.

Katharine
Chris

The rest are irrelevant and just waiting on their turn to go home. Those top 6 are TIGHT though. I never really understood the meaning of the term "Master Blaster" until Katharine took the stage today. What a sweet, innocent girl with such a wholesome appearance. She's making a solid run at Melissa Theuriau in the "I'm too old to even think about it any more, but if I could..." department. And someone finally posted links this morning to the Theuriau topless beach photos.

Sorry, can't share the links, though they're well worth a google if you've even caught a half-second of a Theuriau newscast - even if you don't speak a word of French and are still going to Chili's and ordering an Old Fashioned with Freedom Fries.

So, it was Stevie Wonder night on American Idol. Basically, the night everyone dreads, when no one can hold much of a candle to the Elton John of songs that are less likely to reference dead English pseudo-royalty than my reaction to Katharine sashaying around onstage in a clingy and timeless yet somehow trendy summer dress.

On to the ratings, which will be truncated this week because I'm more worried about Katharine's safety from the 10,000,000 or so stalkers she now has on the internet than I am about who stays or goes this week:

1. Katharine McPhee. Score of 88.
2. Chris Daughtry. Score of 83.
3. Taylor Hicks. Score of 81. I thought he had by far his best performance to date.
4. Paris Bennett. Score of 78.
5. Melissa McGhee. Score of 74.
6. Mandisa Hundley. Score of 73.
7. Lisa Tucker. Score of 72. Starting to show signs of trouble outside of her comfort zone.
8. Bucky Covington. Score of 63. He was bearable today, for the first time.
9. Kellie Pickler. Score of 62. That wasn't good at all. At least she didn't pretend she'd never heard of Stevie Wonder, in that cute little voice.
10. Elliott Yamin. Score of 60. I like him, but he is not consistent.
11. Kevin Covais. Score of 40. Why bother?
12. Ace Young. Score of 35. He has gone from a favorite to one with precious little chance. In fact, "precious" is an excellent description of Ace.

Who should go? Kevin.

Who will be bottom three? Kevin, Melissa and Elliott.

Who will go? Melissa. Her McBreasts are McLovely, but there's only room for one McHottie, and McPhee is simply the better singer.

I was impressed by Bucky and Melissa this week. If I heard either of their performances from this week on the radio, I would listen all the way through (which is rare for me with this show).

Kevin was a grade-A asshole this week. He sang terribly and then acted like a disrespectful punk afterwards. I hope he goes this week.

Heard something on the morning show this morning that makes sense. The guy was saying that Kevin is mostly voted on by older people who think he's a "nice guy". And prior to getting this far he did seem that way. But giving Simon lip just destroys the whole image. Kevin has been getting a MASSIVE head in the last few weeks. From the "sex symbol" comment to the ass comment this week. Those voters could dry up for him.

Simon has a lot of control over the show, but as it evolves he has to be careful how he handles his comments and behavior or he risks generating huge number of votes just to piss him off.

It almost seems at times he'll use the entire show just to set up one comment, and I think he decided to go after Kevin last night. He was extra nice about mediocre performances from Lisa and Mandisa, was even pretty positive toward Bucky and tried to give Elliott a boost even though his chances are sinking like a stone.

But he was brutal with Kevin and when Kevin childishly replied, he was careful not to show any emotion one way or the other. He's letting the fans judge Kevin from his last words, and I suspect last night had a devastating effect on Kevin's voters. I really wouldn't be surprised if he went home tonight.

I don't know how long Simon can continue to control the show, but he's a lot smarter than he looks and I believe just about everything he says is carefully chosen to give his favorites a boost. I don't think he likes Kellie Pickler very much at all, and he was probably worried she could win. He's done a great job undermining her support.

One problem I've noticed, though, is whenever someone makes a comeback at Simon, they seem to get a boost in the voting. Yeah, he acted like an asshole, but he acted like an asshole to Simon. Had he said that to Randy or Paula, he'd be gone. EVERYONE would hate him. But he said it to Simon, and that's going to get him votes.

I remember back during season 2 (I think. The one with Clay on it). It was during the round where they used to have I think 6 or 7 people on, and the top 2 advanced to the final 12. He, of course, was one of the two best easily (I think he was in the same group as Ruben, actually). But this one girl, who did a so-so job, went back and forth with Simon for a few seconds after her so-so performance. Ruben and this chick got voted to the next round and Clay was gone. This chick, who had no business being in the top 12, got there because she acted the way Kevin did last night towards Simon.

Of course, the judges brought Clay back along with 2 others that made it far. The chick that went back and forth with Simon was one of the first ones gone.

And that's not the only time I've noticed that either. It almost seems like an automatic advancement if you make a comeback at Simon. There comes a point, though, when you do bad and just can't avoid elimination no matter what your after performance comments are, but, generally I've noticed that saying shit back at Simon gets you votes. Maybe Kevin, knowing that he sucked and has no chance, is just trying to cling on the best way he knows how. Acting like a punk towards Simon.

Exactly. I think the perception of Simon has changed over the years, and most people realize that he is generally on the money where he was viewed as just cruel in the first two seasons. I'm totally with you here.

This is the first season that I have watched more than an episode here and there and to me Simon seems to be the only one that truely understands what it is going to take to make a star. I find myself wanting to fast forward past Paula and Randy and their useless comments to hear what Simon has to say. Not because he's mean and it's funny, but because he has actual insight.

I think its because Randy and Paule tend to judge contestants relative to each other whereas Simon is judging them relative to what he thinks it takes to be a star. To Simon there is a certain threshold you need to reach to be great and anything less than that is terrible.

Randy is very sensitive to the crowd's reaction. If you can peg how much the audience likes the performance, you have a good idea of how Randy will react.

Simon, on the other hand, seems to enjoy tweaking the crowd.

Paula is on some sort of magic drug cocktail, and it's just a matter of time before she breaks down, most likely on live television, and morphs into the DVD of Dorian Grey right before our eyes.

Simon Cowell predicts top three 'Idols'

NEW YORK, March 17 (UPI) -- "American Idol" judge Simon Cowell predicts the final three in this season's finals will be Chris Daughtry, Taylor Hicks and Kellie Pickler.
Cowell made his prediction for the Fox TV talent competition during a Thursday telephone conversation broadcast on Howard Stern's Sirius satellite radio show, the New York Post reported Friday.
"Let me tell you who's gonna be in the finals," Cowell said. "The bald-headed kid (Daughtry) and the guy with gray hair (Hicks)."
A few minutes later, he added, "I think the top three will be the two I mentioned and Kellie Pickler."
Around this time last year, Cowell correctly predicted Carrie Underwood would take the crown, the newspaper noted.

Yeah, but I think America loves McPhee as well. I don't see any final 3 not having her in it.

I think he is wrong on this one. Pickler is not a strong enough a singer. Underwood isn't either, but she's stronger than Pickler and didn't have as good competition. I'd be surprised if she's top 5 at this point.

My final 3:

Chris Daughtery, Katharine McPhee, and either Taylor Hicks or Elliott.

Chris is the only definite I have right now. I mean I just KNEW Kevin was gone last week, and he's still there. So I dont know what America will do

Only one got voted off last week? You mean there's still 10 more weeks of this thing?

Maybe Simon will get very annoyed and "fire" three in one week like Trump does.

McPhee, as great as she is, is prone to weeksof bad song choice and/or blah performance, even if her vocals remain spot-on. She likely won't make top 3. I have no confidence in a voting public that robs us of Becky O'Donoughue after 1 week, but leaves us to suffer with Covais week after week.

And yes, Bucc, the finals of this thing aren't until the end of May!

Tonight's theme is songs from the 50's.

Every time I hear the theme I can't help but think, "I can't wait to hear Bucky".... no matter what happens, you know it will be entertaining in some form or another...

This week we need to hear the sound of the big doors of Fox htting Bucky's azz on the way out the door......PLEASE!!!!!!

Before the 50s theme was announced, rumor was Bucky doing an Elvis song, so this fits. Apparently it may be Jailhouse Rock, which should be bad enough in a "John Stevens does Crocodile Rock" way to send Bucky home. This is probably right up Covais' alley, unfortunately. White boys don't sound much whiter than those who sang in the 50s.

Other rumor is Taylor doing a Buddy Holly song. Apparently they sent the whole crew to Vegas to see Barry Manilow (who not so coincidentally has that new 50s covers album out). I'll be biting my Barbra Streisand paint-on nails in anticipation...

On Bucky: Agree with you KSyrup. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying I like him, I'm saying he's a train-wreck waiting to happen..

Taylor doing Buddy Holly could be great. I'm a pretty big Buddy Holly fan and I think it could suit him.

I heard on the radio that there will be a live performance from Manilow.

Just like with Stevie Wonder, I'm sure Wednesday's "let's kill 28 minutes before we vote someone off" show will include a Manilow performance. He already worked the Dancing With Stars show, and that resulted in a #1 album the next week. This is where AI turns into the type of show I really have little interest in watching, apart from the actual performances. Too bad they have to ruin even that with crap music.

This is my first season watching the show, and I've already decided I will only watch the results show if I happen to be sitting at the TV or if I think someone is getting kicked off that I have an interest in seeing them perform again.

Mandisa - I didn't really pay attention. I assume it was a good performance since people clapped. Paula was taken back to the 50's even though she was never there in the first place. Simon is again scared to say anything bad about he since he called her fat.

IMO, she did a good job BUT there are just too many good voices this time around for her to last too long.

Paris - OK. i think she was a bit low on the song. Too raspy. She's too young for the song, wasn't sultry enough. I sat the whole time thinking "what if mcphee sang this...". Best i remember of the night though.
